👋Hi friends👋 Have you wondered how much a vegan keto diet costs per week? Or what to include in your vegan keto grocery list? In this video, I take you with me to the Asian Supermarket (thanks for everyone who voted for the shop btw). I'll show you what I buy to maintain a healthy plant-based low carb lifestyle, how much it costs, how I try to save money, plus the other add-ins that make up the weekly vegan keto food budget.
* WHY VEGAN KETO *
Keeping a consistently plant-based keto diet keeps my chronic tendonitis symptoms so quiet that I forget I even have it! Unless I cave for some pasta or potatoes when I'm cooking for others...then a flare-up will remind me I still have healing to do. If you find yourself in a similar place with a health condition that is helped by a plant-based keto diet as well, I hope my vegan keto recipes and lifestyle vlogs help you too. However, it's quite restrictive and not easy or even useful for everyone so please don't misconstrue my sharing what works for ME as what will work for YOU. Only YOU can tell.

* WHAT IS A VEGAN KETO DIET or PLANT-BASED KETO DIET? *
Vegan or plant-based diets avoid animal products. Simple right? But popular keto diets, medical or therapeutic diets, and keto "gurus" all have their own definitions. For clarity, I'll give my version too.
A keto diet helps the body GET INTO KETOSIS (the state in which the body primarily is burning fat for fuel) and/or STAY in that state with the minimization of net carbs.
And like typical vegan diets or keto diets, you can do it in a healthy way or unhealthy way.

The prices of produce and tofu are indeed getting pretty insane, I can't wait to see what you cook up.
Right?! Never seen mark ups this big in my life
I find it so hard to tick all the boxes - aiming for vegan/vegetarian, keto but so much plastic packaging and food miles 😕. Just found your channel , enjoying it and super keen on trying the various tofus when I move into my camper! Hi from Australia!
I totally agree! Thanks so much for the kind comment :-)
"It's heaven... the price, however, is HELL" 😆 🤣 the way you said it with that dry humor of yours is priceless 😉
😁I have to laugh about it or else I'd CRY!
I absolutely LOVED this video. It's so good to see your lovely face lol 🧡 thank you for taking us with you, Mary!!!
Thanks for coming along 🧡😊
I always love your videos, cooking/baking/or just pure life vids! Always makes me happy to see them! PS: this is especially helpful as I live in Calgary too and find certain vegan/keto items to limbo between overpriced low stock, scarce or just non existent.
Thanks so much! It's true the "keto" products can be so tricky. I just mostly avoid them for your first reason: overpriced!! whew!
Eek! Almost $100/week USD! I'm not keto, so rice, sweet potatoes, white potatoes and carrots make a regular appearance on my table, so I guess that is why my eating plan is less expensive. I only have about $125/month that I can spend on groceries, including any sundries I might need.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you make with your cabbages.
Yes it's pretty expensive especially the last couple months!
You are so cute & fun! 💖 I loved this grocery haul. Interesting to see prices from other areas. Thank you for sharing! 🤗
Mary those prices seemed really reasonable to me. I live in Illinois, suburb of Chicago. This was fun seeing your grocery store, good luck with the peanut tofu I’m so curious ☺️💜
It's hard to do any better! Thanks so much for sharing your perspective :-) Peanut tofu coming soon
Thank you 🥰🥰🥰
You’re welcome 😊
Lovely to see your face! Can't wait for the peanut tofu!
Coming soon!
The prices of basically everything have gone up dramatically in Australia too, but eating vegan can still be very affordable, if you avoid most of the processed food that gets the 'vegan tax', and avoid also avoid all of the labels like keto, gluten free, flexitarian etc. it is unfortunate that these terms are more and more often associated with veganism, deterring people and making them think it is a dietary choice, or fad in the process.
Thanks for sharing your experience from Australia :-)
I don't think I've ever left the Asian grocery store spending less than $100 it's just a given. I also spend along time reading ingredients ha
There are so many tempting treats!
We’re on disability so we have to be careful with prices & noticed everything has gone up $3-$8 since Nov, it’s insane. I’d rather spend just a tad more for local produce too than the tasteless gross stuff at Superstore or Save On that always look like it’s moldy and shouldn’t be on the shelves. Thank goodness for bulk items or canned stuff at dollar stores too. Plus channels like yours with easy to follow recipes help when you’re in recipe ruts.
It's wild for sure!!
OMG I know that T&T very well along with that first stop train. I live in the NE 😄
small world :-)
This is where the power of bulk buying and growing vegetables makes a difference. With a pantry full of dried soybeans, chickpeas, and lentils, making tofu and plant milks from scratch is a big cost savings.
For growing vegetables indoors, I started with a single wall of small closet sized greenhouses, complete with LED grow lights. Scallions, celery, cabbage, carrots, sweet peas, herbs, radishes, garlic, and lots of greens saves a lot, too. We are going to expand into a garden room this year. There is no need to let the plants mature. I take cabbage leaves as I need them, for instance. Amd greens at six plus inches. The most amazing vegetable is the number of sweet pea pods available daily. I started with growing scallions from seed, and this edible hobby grew on me. 🫑🍅🫛🧄🥬🥕🥦🧅🥗
that sounds wonderful. I wish I had the space and that electricity wasn't so expensive where I live
I didn’t know you were in Calgary! 😎
I am!
I have to agree with the AG1 recommendation. They pay a thirty percent commission to their affiliates and it's like $90 for a few months. Imagine getting a third of that! Should definitely be on every UA-camr and Podcaster's list of links in the description!
My link is not that kind of affiliate link. I do not earn commission on it.
@@marystestkitchen Oh! I hope you are still getting a good deal. I liked your pumpkin tofu video! 🙌
Look at all those Different mushrooms 🤤
Such a glorious mushroom wall :-) Too bad I can't afford it haha
Yaaaay! 🤗😊
Thank you for watching! :-)
I have a T&T grocery store close by and I'm interested in those tofu noodles. An unrelated question, the tofu press you love- I bought one. Have you ever pressed Costco tofu in it?
No I haven't tried that Costco tofu before
I've never seen sharataki noodles! I'm not sure if they are available in the US, should I look for them at a local Asian food store? Thanks!
shirataki noodles are pretty widely available these days. You can even get them on Amazon
We have 3 TnT markets in Edmonton. I go as often as I can. Unfortunately the is an hour and 10 minutes away. So when I go, I have to make sure I have a good list 😃
Question is AG-1 made with all organic ing?
From their website: All ingredients in AG1 are non-GMO. Some of the phytonutrient ingredients in AG1 are organic, but some of our ingredients are not classified as organic by nature, such as minerals. Others do not fall under organic or inorganic classification due to the growing or extraction process, including probiotics. In some cases, we have elected to use an ingredient from a non-organic supplier because we found it was higher quality, more consistent, and still passed the rigorous NSF Certified for Sport® and third-party testing standards, including being non-GMO.
With over a decade in the industry and a focus on continuous improvement and testing, our experience shows us that organic isn’t always the best when it comes to some of our key ingredients. For these reasons, we cannot label the entire formula as organic. That said, every ingredient and every batch we make gets tested for ingredient quality, toxicity, and microbes.
Make keto laminated bread with cultures butter!
just over here casually asking for miracles to happen ;-)
Woah, that chinese grocery store is so pricey! I can get the same package of seafood mushrooms at my asian supermarket for less than $5. But if I go to my regular supermarket (Kroger) it has WAY fewer options and the cost is through the roof. I usually spend $120 per week on groceries because I am rarely able to make it to the asian market. I live in the southern US where the cost of living is significantly lower than the rest of the country so $120 per week seems really high to me. I will certainly be glad when this wild economy settles back down.
I have an idea for a video series you could do instead of or in addition to your grocery haul videos. Whenever I go to my local Asian supermarket, there are aisles and aisles of items that are clearly vegan, but I have NO idea how to cook with them. I have tried to look up these items on google, but there are no recipes at all. For example, I bought a package of Havista "soy tofu roll" because it looked interesting. But when I tried looking up "soy tofu rol recipe" all I could find were recipes for soy skin rolls with filling, which didn't even use the same product. I tried to cook them like chicken, but they were tough and rubbery. I know I wasn't preparing it right. All these packages have very unhelpful directions like "great in hot pot, stir fry, braised, etc. etc." but they ALL say that, and I've never seen any recipes that call for these ingredients. There's an AMAZING product called "vegetarian chicken slices" that works great as a chicken substitute in alfredo and lo mein. I bet most people don't know about it. I think it would be really awesome to pick some random product from the Asian market and show us how we can use it! Maybe like once a month or something!
Wow, that’s about double what I pay (I live in Sweden) but I don’t do keto. I do try to lean that way more and more tho.
Yep dried beans and rice are way more affordable
Im vegan as well and I too rough my weekly spending at 120-130 per week (and I dont splurge on things I want to try often)
Right?! I remember back in the day, I was aiming for $50 a week and now, not even buying gardein or beyond EVER and wtf haha
Those prices are fairly high, then again T&T is the higher end of Asian markets. I buy the Shirakiku brand miso for about half the price, and it could be lower if I have time to make my own. Sometimes produce is better priced at those little mom&pop shops.
In Calgary, I find that T&T is mid-range in price but higher quality for produce most of the time. Unfortunately had some pretty bad experiences with smaller shops
That's insane! A week.. that almost my whole monthly budget.. I was spending just €20 but now it's around 35/40.. and I shop around and go to several grocery stores a week! So I try to buy what's on sale.. but grocery and cooking for one on a budget isn't easy.. I just glad I am able to shop around and don't mind doing it..and I recently bought a small dehydrator and a chufamix (highly recommend!) to make my own milk.. which helps to keep the budget low.
You can feed yourself on 100 euros per month?! Wow impressive.
@@marystestkitchen yes! A few things to note. I am autisic and have sensory issues. And I revert back to basic/comfort diet as soon as something triggers me. I would bulk buy items online or on sale to actually find food that I like to eat.. so I have enough to feed an army but don't eat it myself only the stuff that is safe to me. I love to experiment and even cook but eating it is asking me to put a sensory bomb in my mouth and hope it will be accepted. Which results in me throwing food away or just prep and not eat.
I hope this clears it up! I am not keto, it didn't work for me but your channel helps to try stuff and see what will stay in my diet! So thank you for your content.
Leuk, another Dutch viewer. I also feed myself on 100-150 a month, more closer to 150 now prices went up but I also bulk buy.
Mary, I would like you to make red bean tofu. Make this tofu pls
what kind of red beans? There are so many! :-)
@@marystestkitchen red kidney beans
@@marystestkitchen I don't know what this variety is called in America
Yeah this video just proves why eating healthy is basically impossible for the more impoverished lol. Me and my wife's bi-weekly budget shopping at places like Save-a-lot and Aldi's (cheapest stores around us) is 150$ and that gets us two weeks worth of meals . 80-90 dollars for a single week and just a single person?
Would love to eat healthier but with prices like that, it's never going to happen. Love your videos though! Still getting into making tofu for fun every now and again. Just can't do a full healthy diet like this.
It's a lot cheaper if you're able to incorporate whole grains, beans and lentils. Unfortunately, I can't for my very specific health reasons but most people can include them in a healthy diet.
Watching the video was a bit disorienting 😵💫 but I enjoyed listening. Thank you!
Sorry about the shaky vlogging but glad you could still enjoy the audio :-)
We are a family of 6….this would be way too expensive for us. ….wait…. We have a garden….. not vegan diet, but adding in as many plant based items as we can afford. We even ordered hemp hearts to use for tofu and milk substitute for our 3 lactose intolerant daughters. Even little steps help, right?
Luckily a standard healthy vegan diet doesn't cost as much as this. While Vegan keto is more expensive, it isn't necessary or the best choice for most people.
Oooh can't wait to watch.
I'll save this video to
Saturday morning with my soy latte, my favorite way to start my weekend 😘
Hope you enjoy!
Wow. You look so much healthier. Your face is glowing! I hope your stomach is a lot better too!
Yes! Thank you!
seems these days you are punished when choosing organic produce with the highest prices. pretty sad the government is allowing this to happen, where in europe, organic is the norm in many countries, meaning you should never have to search out for organic because by default all produce is organic.
Interested about vegan keto... I mostly eat rice, beans, potatoes, and oatmeal. 🤔🌱
It's more affordable with rice and beans, that's for sure :-)
🤣🤣🤣
thanks for watching :-)
