I am on a retirement visa and annually extend in Sisaket. I agree it is always stressful until it is done, despite professional officers being friendly. The important thing you point out is the requirements are clear and not difficult to achieve as long as you merely comply. Well done Ryan. To anyone in doubt, tackle it as a Thai under the Nike principle, don't think too much, just do it!

It's a bit of a shame that the Thai government makes it so difficult for Westerners who start a family in Thailand while Thais who move to the West get a permanent residence after a few years.

I’m still on immi o Visa. And I am blessed with a wife that becomes singularly focused every 12 months. She takes total control and checks and triple checks before we visit the immigration department. We were out at Phatum Thani and now we are at Samut Prakan. On every occasion Thanya engages the authorities and covers all of their questions or concerns perfectly. As I said I am blessed. Next March we are “upgrading” to full retirement visa which will means no 3 monthly reporting only annually.

I agree with your assessment of the Buriram Immigration Officers. They're friendly, helpful, efficient and make the Visa renewal procedure less stressful.
After watching what is happening back in the USA with their open borders fiasco, I don't mind the requirements for my Retirement Visa and respect the Thai government. It's something I was aware of before moving here and feel it's just the "cost" of living in such a wonderful country.

a friend of mine just got Citezenship - a Brit, if you have been on the same Non B for at least 5 years its worth starting the application. It seems to be getting easier, I know 3 people this year alone that got their Thai citezenship. I would apply but I jump around visas too much. I am a Brit with Thai wife and we have 10 year-old daughter. I bought a condo here 15 years ago. I have worked here 12 years with full contracts and tax payment details. I qualify for both PR and even Citizenship but the corruption and 'additional VIP' (never discussed online) payments make these options unaffordable for me. Marriage visa is my option but now there are additional barriers with taxes on money transferred from overseas. I will definitely stay here, but might advise others to consider more foreigner-friendly countries.

I think you will be a lot happier when you start doing retirement Visas. I just did my annual there in BuriRam and you are right, they are very friendly and have a great staff that helps make copies and make sure everything is correct. Was there about an hour, very easy if you have everything ready. No family photos and no return visit on a retirement O. They added an extra stamp in my passport that I had to sign and made it very clear to me that the financial requirement is now 400,000 Bhat in the bank. Went on a shopping spree after.

Good evening. Thailand Elite Visa is a long-term visa categorized under Privilege Entry Visa allowing residency in Thailand along with benefits for a period between 5 and 20 years depending of the chosen package in exchange of a membership fee. The Elite Visa is a 5-year renewable multiple entry visa with an extendable 1-year length of stay per each entry. Including visa is appropriate for anyone who lives or regularly comes to Thailand but doesn’t want to deal with Thailand’s bureaucratic visa system. This includes digital nomads that don’t want to do visa runs, retirees who don’t want to be stressed with the new complicated regulations that have been regularly introduced, or investors or business people who need to fly in and out of Thailand several times a year. It's my own checking by using and understanding about it without wasting my dad time period to info to me...

the only reason I won't live in Thailand anymore is due to the yearly exercise getting a renewal and the bureaucratic wish wash even a 30 day extra stay is, the place we go not a nice experience and some of the staff you have to deal with are very unprofessional and unfriendly and I'm happy not to have to go through this every year while my wife already got permanent residence after 5 months and eligible for citizenship in 2 years, so I feel there is still a lot to be desired for in Thailand regarding long time stay.

In a way the Thai visa system is preferable to U.K. in that it continually re-assesses the ability to be financially secure and not a burden on the state. U.K. family visa (settlement) is based on a one off salary threshold that was c.£19k, then to increase to £39k, now much lower coz of a u-turn, reason - to curb migration. The problem with U.K. system, is the very next day once approved ppl can then be totally reliant on tax payer for support. It has nothing really to do with being financially secure. Not saying that the Thai system could be better, but it’s a far better system than U.K.’s.

I feel your pain. 27 years in Thailand. In the beginning a marriage extension with all the paperwork required. Then as working in our company had to have a Work Permit extension with even more paperwork. When I was 65 they would not renew Work Permit. Easiest solution was a retirement extension. I am fortunate to have 800k baht in the bank. Years ago I used to worry about the application process. But these last 6 years the application has been streamlined and I am in and out in an hour, collect stamped passport next day. No stress. Easy given paperwork all correct.

I got my one year marriage visa extension stamp in my passport today. I applied in Surin on November 7 and got the visa stamp today, December 22. So it took 1.5 month. The problem is that the local Immigration office can not approve the application, Here it has to be sent to Khon Kaen Immigration for approval. Retirement visa extension can be approved at the local Immigration office so that is a different story. We have two Immigration offices in the Surin province now so never much people at any office.

I suppose the Thai authorities want to reserve the right to remove foreigners who might get on the wrong side of the law and find themselves unwelcome in the country. So long as corrupt officials don't try to extort money from law abiding people in return for a visa, everything is just fine.

10 pictuers? Jesus. I know everywhere is different but we need 3 (Korat immigration). Been doing it for 7 years now and everything is pretty straightfoward. We live close to our bank and immigration and are usually 1st in the queue for Visa renewal. I get the forms the week before and complete them at home. In and out in about 1hr max.

Going in there with a respectful attitude goes a long way. A friend was trying to get his drivers license in Chonburi a few years back. He said there were 7 Falangs trying to do the same thing. Three of the Falangs had terrible attitudes ("this is stupid"...."we dont have to do this in my country"...etc etc). The 4 Falangs with pleasant attitudes got their DLs. The 3 with the bad attitudes were told to come back next week as their "paperwork" was not in order:):):)

Well you have to do it every year, it’s all about $$$$ government want to collect. I hope I don’t have to go through that if I married thai citizen. Planning to go bkk for marriage registration next year.

Concerning the Christmas likes or dislikes... each to it's own, I guess. Where I live, Christmas is most likely the most important holiday, in other parts it is not. But I don't thing it hurts to spread some holiday spirit, no matter what the holidays are. Chinese new year, ramadan, whatever, as long as it is a reason to celebrate and connect, who cares?

Anything can change including the requirements for getting another year of marriage visa! I went into the green bank to get new ATM cards which were due to expire and spend 2 hours doing this for my two accounts. My name was formatted wrong on both accounts, even though I have had one for over 20 years and another lets say 12 years; so they now have to fix that as Thailand is becoming stricter on alot of things and it has to be 100% correct. Then I have to register my UK tax number so they have record that I pay tax in the UK and thus protects me from being double taxed in Thailand (new requirement). Then they give me new bank books (the old ones aren't good enough?) and finally I get the ATM cards, which I have to pay 250 baht for each. Huge amount of paperwork for all this and lots of signing my name on pieces of paper. In the UK they would just send me a new Visa Debit in the post before its expiry! Mostly Thailand is easy going until you have to do anything legal!

BTW a nice unserious video. It is what it is: you have to do the vise renewal as its the law so whats the point in getting upset about it? And might as make it a fun day out?

  • @sgraham005

Your immigration office is (based on your experience) one of the most efficient I’ve seen. Do you have to renew by a specific day? What if you’re traveling? It sure would be nice if Thailand considered permanent residence for family members. The Thai government currently seems to be focused on enhanced tax collection from foreigners (and certain Thais with foreign foreign investment income) we shall see how that plays out in 2024.

Yes. If I remember correctly you need a couple of Thai witnesses. And it is very doubtful you will have all the necessary documentation when you first go there. Might take a bit of time but it is pretty straightforward and definitely not worth paying an agent unless you really have to.
