My take is that Leos and Zakus basically weren’t designed to fight other MS, but meant to dominate those without MS.
Well, Kacylia had expectations that at some point the Feds would produce their own MS to fend off against them, so the Zaku II received some features for that such as the heat hawk. But...it would be reasonable that they didn't expect the Fed MS to be more powerful, in great part by numerical superiority, better armour and access to effective beam weapons
Makes sense. At least in Wing, since I can't remember the earth army to have mobile suits

Gundams literally self destruct more often than they are destroyed in battle. I've always prefered Zakus and their no-nonsense style. They're badass underdogs.

It's amazing how much the Quality of a Leo improves when someone with a name is in the cockpit.

from what i learnt, red paint improves the mobility up to 300%. Purple paint in this case, probably improve the defensive points up to 300%

I could never let the Earth Federation live down the fact they gave GM Sniper IIs, the highest performing GM that can match even the White Base’s Gundam in the right hands, to a pilot team that would’ve been better off known as the “Red Shirt” Team.
Oddly surprising that Balls have gotten more of a win record than GMs. Heck, come back alive after beating at least one Zaku and you’re given a Gundam and your own MS team to lead.
The EF also wasted a bunch of a GMs and Guncannon on a bunch of kids in Thunderbolt as well. All in the name of finding the next Newtype.
@@danielchew8739 I'm not sure if giving them Balls would have been a better or worse choice. On one hand, they are Balls. On the other, being much smaller, more manoeverable, and with much less skill needed to pilot them, they actually have the potential to become far more of a pain for those Zeon campers in that debris-filled hell. Daryl's trajectory calculations would have certainly been thrown out the window trying to accomodate for targets that can worm through smaller gaps.
Because of those damn particles that jam communications and lock on targeting systems for range weapons on the space ships

@@kakarot197 You know I'm embarrassed that I genuinely believed this for so long, but somebody pointed out to me that the primary example for Stormtroopers having shit aim is the Death Star escape sequence...when Vader actually WANTS them to escape (why put a tracking beacon on the Falcon otherwise?)
While they're super accurate from a video-game perspective...from an IRL military perspective they actually DO have ridiculously good accuracy. And against a target as slow moving as the Jawa Sandcrawler (might as well have been stationary for how fast the damned thing moved)...

I’d argue too that, with the amount of times you see them with rebels under capture by them, that they actually wanted to avoid killing the rebels u less directly ordered to either to avoid casualties or to have more Prisoners and intelligence opportunities . For the paper armor that they wear, we actually have no idea as to wether or not they either die or just get knocked down from being shot

One of the reasons I love The Origin so much is that it thoroughly demonstrates why the Zaku II was the beginning of a new kind of warfare and how it completely out classed the conventional weapons.
Seeing a fleet of ships easily defeated by them truly showed that, war has changed.
Didn't stop Type 61 tanks from killing Zakus.

Laser weapons at this point were equivalent to ship class.
I feel like the Leo’s weaknesses were to save on the animation budget.
Why waste time drawing a detailed Leo as it falls down or gets dismantled when you can just cut to a basic explosion in the next frame?
That’s why I always like MS battles better in Gundam OVAs compared to the animes.
Also pacing, they want the latest coup and counter coup to rush from one point to another, so the previous forces need to get blown up real fast.
Zeta actually had some pretty great mobile suit animation for a TV show, especially in several different fights. Wing was just straight trash. Even the Gundam fights had dumpster tier animation. Turn A also has top tier animation.
00 has no excuse for the Wing-tier combat in the first season, as the 1st season finale and second season featured extremely over the top mecha combat, although it was damaged somewhat by the overuse of particle effects "just because we can." I refuse to even watch Seed.
But yes, the OVAs have by far the best animation, especially Stardust and War in the Pocket.

I never knew the Balls were so fast. Shiro aside, every time I see them they're used like stationary/snail-paced artillery. And if the story from the old Newtype from CB Vanguard is to be believed, the Ball is one sturdy boy that can rival the Gundam Hyper Hammer.
this video is basically why i loved 08th ms team, they had to use actual tactics with their machines and couldnt just muscle through anything.

I was just about to bring up 08th ms team I’m really happy to see others that have to the same view.
It's my favorite OVA and features my favorite mobile suit the RX-79 [G] Gundam Ground Type.
The battles were so well done. Even the special short addressed a weakness of the 08th MS team's suits and had to come up with a way around it. Makes me wish more series would stop being set in space and beam spamming so much.
@@MasterArchfiend A way around it? The Ez8 tanked everything it got hit by, even the long range sniper cannon. Also, that was Shiro being dumb for a moment to create false tension because he was already used to 3D-type battles: he piloted a Ball in space against a Zaku. Literally no reason he should have to stop to think about how to deal with a flying target.
Everyone dunks on the Leo, but at least it isn't held together with spit and prayer as much as its earlier counterpart, the Aries.

Well in all reality we have to remember Trowa didnt kill Duo on purpose lol he was an excellent shot and made sure to not hit the Leo in a way that would blow it up.
i dont know about shiros ball proving plot armor i think that who battle went the way it did just because of how he surprised the zaku if it had been a strait up fight without him being able to charge in he would not have stood a chance its kind of reminiscent of the tactics sherman drivers would use against German tanks in ww2 they were the weaker ones but would quickly charge in when they were not noticed until they got in close enough that there weapons were effective and quickly overwhelm the enemy tanks
Not quite, Trowa wanted Duo to survive thus all his shots are all not "lethal". He only attacked duo to get into the enemy's side.
Shiro's ball was technically better in acceleration than the Zaku High Mobility test type. Also you forgot to mention than he was able to sneak in close enough to Aina using debris. If anything, its not plot armor but more or less cunning tactics and actual guts. Hell, if you switch that up with Oggo and a GM sniper in that situation you'd call it amazing zeon tactics.
Trowa killed/blew up no one in the whole movie, so why should he suddenly do that to Duo...

We need a Gundam series that follows a regular pilot. That's what I loved about Gravity of the Battlefront, especially Yandell. We got to see just how effective even tanks can be against mobile suits.

Best Ball to ever exist was the "B Gundam" shown in the Crossbone Gundam Skull Hear Manga. It was literally a Ball with a gundam face plate. it preformed worse than a standard ball due to being off-balanced by the added armor, but it killed three RICK DOMS of all things during the Battle of Solomon. the B Gundam is why Aumro Ray never faced off against Avel Gato at that battle, and is also why the Perfect Zeong was so massive. they legit though the actual gundam's head was as large as the fed's Ball Mobile Armors.

tbh another honerable mention should be most mobile armors, they are supposed to be some of the most powerful machines around, but some of them seem to be there to make the main character more powerful instead of actually being powerful, and i wish they had more kits of them.
Depends on what mobile armor you're talking about. Seed Destiny Mobile Armors are shown powerful, when they were introduced. The Zamza-Zah was introduced being troublesome for Shin's Force Impulse. The Gells-Ghe was that spider-like Dagger guarding that cannon. Then Goufs and Zakus later on, are taking them down rather easily. The Destroy Gundams were at least taken down by Gundams, and not by grunts.
@@bagsikdangal Don't forget original SEED. Mobile Armor was just a fancy term for "starfighter" during the First Bloody Valentine War, and it really showed in the performance of a Mobile Armor. On paper, it would take upwards of FIVE Moebius units to fight a single GINN on even terms, and even the far more capable Moebius Zero, which, by the way, was outfitted with REMOTE WEAPONRY, could struggle to keep pace with enemy Mobile Suits at times.

@@anzaca1 But it doesn't have to be THAT one sided! The Scarlet Team didn't fire a single shot! The team was wiped out in seconds- basically using up the Kampfer's ammunition. They could have the pilots be somewhat competent and fired back, dodge, or mabye even do some minor damage to the Kampfer. ANYTHING other than the Kampfer's flawless 8v1victory with some of the coolest designs grunt designs of the UC.

@@supergeno128ds it kind of did need to be that one sided since the kampfer had tissue paper for armor to allow for it to be brought in undetected in pieces, had any of the GMs landed a hit or even grazed it the thing would have been crippled if not totaled.
It's generally believed that Fed's pilot receives less training time on the simulator or live training than Zeon pilots have on real combat action. Training expenses are too much trouble and too little return for corrupt officials to take advantage of, while building more suits means "payday" for them.
Karta's Regulatory Joint Fleet consisted of men who had the same hair and eye color as McGillis who she loved. It was less a guard fleet and more her own personal lookalike club.
Murasame, it got its ass kick in its first few appearances but then suddenly became awesome later. Like when three of them worked as a team to take out a Gundam
I think Kakarot covered this in his Murasame video, but the main reason behind that, was simply the fact that the Murasames were extremely high performance machines compared to the Astrays. By the time they started kicking ass, the pilots that survived battles in them, started getting use to the machine's performance and could fully demonstrate what they were capable of.
Well, any high-performance machine that came-up against Shin and the Minerva suddenly became grunts -_-

@@soiyavnz didnt that happen with the gms in the one year war as well? they were pretty trash when they came out, but by the end of the war, they were taking down gelgoogs as if they were zakus. and the gelgoog was technically on par with the gundam if not slightly superior.
@@adlacz7691 Didn't help that their commander was useless; the Murasames that joined the ArcAngel did much better.
They really did the Windam dirty. It's such a sharp design and has pretty stellar specs. It should have actually been a menacing threat if employed with any sort of care but nope; The writers got lazy and just spammed a ton of them on screen for cheap explosions to give Shinn the illusion of accomplishment.
I like to imagine the Naturals piloting them just couldn't utilize them to their fullest potential especially in atmosphere.
I never liked it, it never made sense why they made it unable to use the original Striker packs
@@cormacoregan471 The excuse used was that the shoulder design was different... but theoretically, it could wield the other striker packs minus the shoulder mounted parts (i.e if L. Strike, it wouldn't be able to use the missile launcher and the gatling gun, but it would be able to use the Agni launcher). Although I do not get WHY they wouldn't just redesign the shoulder... I don't think it's a big ask to adjust the shoulder armor to allow the Windam more options other than its Jet, Multilauncher (nuke) and Doppelhorn packs
However, the Windam CAN use the Aile Strike without any issues... which makes me wonder why EA even bothered to make a Jet pack because the Aile allows for sustained atmospheric flight (as seen with the Slaughter Dagger in Stargazer and the Strike Rouge in the original run of GSD)
I said this to a friend of mine before: GSD really went more for aesthetics and "rule of cool" over logic with their technical stuff. Some of which I find silly are:
- How did the ZAKU Warriors end up with a clip-fed beam rifle? What was the need for the MS' generator to be independent from its weapon systems if the high-demand equipment (specifically the Blaze and Gunner Wizards) come with their own generator anyway?
- Why was the Abyss, an aquatic mobile suit, designed with more than half its payload unusable in the environment it was designed to fight
- How does the aerodynamics of the Chaos work...?
- Why did ZAFT suddenly decide to use the core splendor system when nothing in the series prior to that even hinted that this concept even existed / necessary? In the remastered, at least they showed it was useful specifically against Kira because it made it impossible for him to disable the Impulse...
- Speaking of: doesn't it take more energy to launch the 4 blocks of the Impulse and form in the battlefield than launching it as a suit with whatever equipment it needs for the fight? I thought we were trying conserve as much energy as possible to extend the MS' operation time as long as possible?
- Why... did Kira become a newtype...? Or rather... how...?
@blue destiny In the case of the Windam, for some reason they wanted stronger thrusters built into the shoulders.
Jet Striker is an overall improvement of the aile striker with a reduced size and additional weapons. Aile still works for windam squads that lost or couldn't get a jet striker

Cameron Moreno It also depends on the types of weapons that the mobile workers were armed with because I don’t think the weapons that the mobile workers started with even scratched the nanolaminate armor of the graze.
Regarding the Windam...they were built to be better than the most current ZAFT and Orb suits at the end of the first war, and they achieved that. Their problem was that at the same time both ZAFT and Orb improved their own designs by a _far_ greater margin. Basically the Earth Alliance made the mistake of building weapons to win the _last_ war, not the _next_ one.

I love the GM Sniper II but honestly my favorite off of this list is the frequently disrespected Leo.
It is an extremely balanced machine that on paper is a perfect mack to the RGM-79 GM with the ability to quickly adapt to different scenarios.
The reputation itself isn’t even deserved because it’s casualty rate is the result of Wing’s heavy recycling of frames in front of different backgrounds. The machine itself was heavily disgraced by the show’s animation budget or possibly incompetent pilots if you’re wanting to keep the reason in universe.
Not to mention that A. OZ was a bit of a sub-organization in the Earth Alliance, so when they took over, they had to quickly train new pilots, and B. The brief time Heero pilots a Leo, he holds up relatively well to the Virgo units
I'd also add that while the Leos' gear and tech is good on paper (and they got a few moments to shine), we should keep in mind the enemy they were up against.
If we say they were GM level (I'd personally go with Hizack but with higher reactor capability), we have to remember the Gundams were maybe mid-to-late ZZ-era tech level when they first arrived. That kind of performance gap shouldn't really be held against the Leo.
Also, while I love Kakarot's vids, I kinda think he did the Aries dirty in outdated suits vid, seeing as how they dominated every non-Gundam/Tallgeese fight we got to see them in before the Virgos showed up.
this reminds me of the game ms saga, where the leo was a monster of a unit by the time you could face it, it took a long time before you could fight them well... unless you got lucky.
@@Agonysis its worse than that. The Leos were 30 yrs old by the time Wing started. Tallgeese was arguably as strong as a CCA or a F91 era mobile suit, and according to stats only V era suits can match up to its speed. So the manufacturers downgraded from THAT monster to something on par with a HiZack.
It reputation of being made out of Explodium is fully deserved given Trieze's suit took a wound to the side of the gut, and exploded. Compared to the OYW GM a Leo is Chinese knock-off designed by a sadist.
It has no head vulcans, no ability to turn its head, and effectively all main camera articulation has been removed. The previously standard beam saber charge racks are now fitted for but not with. The previously standard thruster backpack is now fitted for but not with. The shields is now a fitted for but not with option and downgraded from a kite to a heater shield. And of course the size of the unit has been dropped down to 16 meter class.
Even fully kitted out with "upgrades" that on a GM are standard features, a Leo has no ability to restore head articulation, main camera articulation, or head vulcans. Do keep in mind that the GM itself is very much designed to have the bare minimum, so going lower than that is noteworthy for all the wrong reasons.
I like how we're praising a Gundam Build anime for showing the potential of the GM Sniper vs Kämpfer fight.. Ah.. what a time to be alive!
All the grunts getting killed lack a very important skill, and that's move out of the goddamn way.
Honestly, this is why I like the 8th MS team. While yes, they were using top of the line machines, they weren't so overpowered that they could slaughter any who stood before them. The group has to use tactics to win, and truly captures the "Real Robot" feeling that Gundam was literally meant to be.
actually they were not. The RX-79Gs were nothing more than glorified GMs modified with spare parts left over from the RX-78 project. The Gundam heads were slapped on for psychological effects, which is why Karen's suit was able to be easily repaired by slapping on a GM head. They were higher spec than regular GMs, but are not really Gundams, much less top of the line.

You know they really should have shown the pilots off the Nahal Argama flying rings around the General Revil mobile suits and really showing that experience trumps new toys only then had the Sleeves arriving to save the day.
its kinda funny how thru out all their series they hardly ever upgraded their armor defense, or speed of the machine, Besides a few ace pilot, especially wen theyre getting shredded like paper on screen.
GM Sniper II: What HAPPENED?
Leo designed to be a multi-role MS. You can see how it has the most optional parts to adapt to any situation or squad type either on earth or space. Its heaviest weapon option, the Dober gun (180mm solid / HE projectile), should be able to damage even the most heavily armored "Gundam" with its theoretically almost invulnerable gundan/rium alloy. Too bad too many plot armors invoked in order to sell the main Gundam toys.
The Union Realdos and AEU Hellions are great mobile suits spec wise. They just had the misfortune of going up against four super robots.
What about the HRL Tierens?
@@TheWarmachine375 I'd say the Tierens probably had the strongest overall showing imo compared to the laughable AEU and the Union only really had the Flag squad. Tierens, more oft than not when under the right leadership, pushed the Gundams more than the others with swarm tactics and their manuverability was enough to keep the Ptolemaios and two(admittedly partially damaged) Gundams at bay while they went for their true ploy. You can potentially chalj that up to Sergei's leadership, but being able to put Virtue in the state it needed to reveal Nadleeh is potentially the biggest W we see any of the big 3 grunt types achieve.
@@brandongreen4439 That is true. Although I'm a bit disappointed that when Tieria was forced to reveal Nadleeh within Virtue, none of the Tieriens immediately shoot him and/or tackle him mid-transformation.

And also they should have snagged the two GN Cannons from Virtue's shoulders too as well and yeet out of there.
By the time the 30 GN Tau Drives were released to three superpower blocs, the Chobu squad would incorporate the stolen GN Cannons into their own GN-X units after reverse engineering it.
Like how Billy reverse engineered the stolen Gundam Throne's beam saber into Graham's GN Flag.
Heero performs about the same in a Leo as he does in Zero when fighting Wufei...that should mean a lot for what the Leo can do.
Mechanically, the Leos function exactly the same as the Gundams. The Gundams in Wing are only made from different base material, it's cos the Leo was derived from the Tallgeese upon which all Mobile Suits, including the Gundams were based off. Given that all the mobile suits are designed by the same group of scientists, it really just comes down to the pilot to determine the effect of the suit.
Wufei didnt try to kill Heero in the Leo and Heero didnt try to kill Wufei in the Zero. And like the guy before me said, the Leo is basicly a Tallgeese with way less armor and mobility but with the same frame, its just that in Wing literally no one learned how to use the saber because they are in a mass production artillery unit.

@@marcosdheleno Not to mention, the Leo has the unfortunate situation of becoming outdated. The Taurus was basically running circles around the Leos. The Virgos 1 and 2 negated the Leos armaments with their planetory defensors.

Leo is the best general type infantry MS that is suitable for almost all situation with his handful or weaponry and backpack, but the downfall of being well around mean it isn't specialized in each specific area. The real reason leo was being phased out was because Leo can't install mobile doll system, which didnt fit the direction of Romefeller Foundation

The Scarlet Team, ah man dude. They got wiped out in like 20 seconds.
They were scarlet alright, they're blood drenched the colony floor... it was a potent prototype(with a combat hardened vet at the controls) with even thinner armor(if you could say it "had" "armor(?)") than a Leo. Yet, it was crazy fast and yet armed to the monoeye with Nasty anti-MS weapons for every range(Beam Sabers for Melee, Shotgun for up close, Panzer Fausts for midrange, and Giant Bazooka's for Ranged destruction). This unit was past the outer defence units/line and under the Scarlet teams position/in an attack position before they had time to react. Blitzkreig at its finest, blast in and outflank your oponent before they can react...
I also wonder if they were actually that poorly skilled as pilots
@@rogue_newtype4364 They possibly had poor response tactics, the Federation was still working on Mobile Suit Operations even if they had caught up or surpassed Zeon's tech, the Zeke's still had more than a few years of using Mobile Suits as Mobile Suits and weren't trying to use Fighter Pliots as Tank driver's or vice versa and designing tactics and tech that was still rooted in obsolete Tank warfare/en mass attacks of armored divisions. Having to suddenly deal with a crack team of Very Well trained assault troops like The Cyclops team was is like running into a raging inferno with only a half filled bucket of water/gasoline, it might work in one spot but, it won't put out or even slow down the inferno you just ran into and your likely to die quickly because no one trained you how to deal with it. The Federation had Aces, just probably more ace level machines than pilots who could actually use them to even a fraction of their full potential. If anything the Federation was good at (or trying to) looking stronger than the actually were. Zeon did it better as they had in beginning fooled the feds till a certain general exposed the glass jaw/house of cards Zeon's war machine/capabilities were.

Another famous Leo joke is that they're made out of only the best "EXPLODIUM" Armor.
Man The Rezel Type C defenders on the General Revil was proboblly my favorite grunt suits, a transformable mobile suit armed to the teeth, it looks cool as hell and packs quite a punch. Its a shame they didn't really get to do anything on screen lol.

If I'm thinking right, the Leo and the GINN are supposed to have some of the highest performance ratings of early series grunt units according to the fluff.
Both the Leo and Ginn just have the unfortunate role of becoming obselete units, once new and better MS came out. Although the Ginn was at least shown capable of dealing Mobieus MAs. And from what I heard, It takes 5 Mobieus to take out a single Ginn. The Leo on the other hand, either fought other Leos or MS with flight and maneuveribility like the Aries. Although I remember a scene in Endless Waltz showing Dorothy, and a Leo pilot mention that he fought on Dec 25 195 AC eve wars. That former Leo pilot mentions shooting down 20 Virgos. Also, that Endless Waltz that I watched didn't have the White Reflection song and has some added scenes.
Slightly off topic, but the GINN was my go to MP suit to pilot in the Gundam Musuo games. They could wreck shop and had a wide range of attacks to play off of
The Leo definitely deserves more love, if just for breaking from the typical mono-eye design bad guy mobile suits had since the start of the series.

I actually liked the Leo from Gundam Wing. The first time you really see its potential was when Zechs piloted one in the first episode.
You also see some take out Virgos late in the series. which is damned impressive given how outdated they are.
The Leo is still a viable front line unit up until Endless Waltz. Meaning the very first mass produced mobile suit in history, with no significant upgrades, remained the mainstay of every side of conflict. Because the Leo is just that good a suit. Which makes sense when you consider that the Tallgeese is where the Leo came from, and the entire point of designing the Leo was 'lets tune the Tallgeese down until it doesn't kill our pilots from g forces' in the first place. Heck, you know what's a contemporary of the Leo in development order? Wing Zero. Both were designed off of the experience with the Tallgeese. I can think of no MS from any Gundam that got screwed as hard as the Leo did. The closest it gets is the poor Enact from 00.

Which is hilarious, as even the Knights being emulated IRL are Pragmatic people, Samurai and Knights 90% of the time would just do what works, yeah sure they can do tactically dumb decisions at times but that doesn't mean they gave too much shit about Honor.
IMO the most accurate Emulation of Knights in a Sci Fi Setting are the Black Templars, yeah they are Zealots, Recklessly Charge into battle sometimes and like to decortate Armor and Weapons to hell and back, but that doesn't mean they aren't tactically sound as they can adapt as an example, they decided that instead of beating a Larger World Eaters Force directly they engaged in Guerilla Warfare actively avoiding direct combat to the point that the World Eaters decended into infighting.
I'm glad you said the Ball was a Hit'N Run device, cause I got Flashbacks in some of the Gundam games where I did just that. Just fleeing all across the map, fire, then repeat.
I'd like to add most of the modern Titans Mobile Suits to this list, specifically the Marassai and the Barzam. Showed up, and spent most of their time getting killed by the Hiyakushiki and the Zeta.
Correction, IF you're Shiro Amada you can take out a Zaku with a Ball. Anyone else just dies.

I’ve always loved the cold district types and wished they got more screen time. They’re impressive and functional units that served a well rounded role. Instead of showing how solid the GM is they just decided to make them look like paper tigers.
Well, they did get one kill... which given that the GMs only have two on-screen kills in the entire series is a good track record.
Seriously though I agree, the idea of a Federation Dom equivalent is really cool, and I love this MS' machine gun. It's a shame they got killed in such a way.
I always thought of the LEO as the ED209 of the Gundam universe:

the leo had an impressive list of mods and weapons it could be outfitted with a first mass production model for the series, 5 different weapons (machine gun, beam saber, dober gun, missile launcher and 2 built in missiles) and at least 3 different suit mods ( commander shoulder mounted lasers, flight backpack and the space pack)

One of the mechanical designers of Bandai, Katoki Hajime, stated in the MG model instruction manual, that the Ball unit is actually an attempt of the Earth Federation Forces trying to reproduce the Mobile Armors and is in fact quite powerful. This is also not the first time such a positive review was given on the unit; Gundam Officials (a Japanese magazine put out by Bandai) has made similar statements on the unit. The Ball, in those Gundam video games that feature it, can be a fearsome weapon - in the SD Gundam series of Tactical RPGs, the Ball's large movement range, low cost, and very powerful long-range main gun make it a devastating second-line unit, although lackluster in close combat. In the Versus series of arcade games, the Ball is similarly dangerous.
Anyone that plays even relatively easy tactical war games can vouch for the value of low maintenance artillery once you establish a front line.

THANK YOU! Someone finally talked about my problem with the fights 0080 WITP. It's not just the grunts that got it bad in that in that OVA. It's like all the mobile suits in that were made out of paper.

I think the Dom and the Gelgoog are absolutely disappointing when it comes to on-screen kills. Zakus are supposed to be inferior to them yet we see at least 2 Gundams and many other mobile suits defeated by MS-05/06 variants. If it weren't for Fisher in Gundam Thunderbolt, there'd be almost no on-screen Dom victories.
Personally I think the Doms had the best performance on ground than in space. On land, they can hover across terrain at high speeds and can attack on the go with all sorts of heavy weapons at hand. It pretty much made Doms the most dominant mass produced land MS in the series.
In space, the Rick Dom is just your typical mobile suit with extra armor and thrusters instead of hover units. It has no major advantages aside from higher overall stats.
If you Doms to kill, play Zeonic Front.

Yea, I don't think any series has really done the Doms justice, they tend to be fodderized just as easily as any other MS. That being said, when it comes to the games, Doms are usually pretty bonkers as you can normally just run circles around anything and everything with relatively impunity. Zeonic Front REALLY hammers this one home too both in game and in canon.

In a way the Enact from Gundam 00 could fit in this list. Essentially it was a copycat of the Union's Flag (one of my favorite grunts of all time, especially Graham Acker's custom). Most of its screen time involved Patrick getting his butt kicked by the Gundams, but Ali An Saachez showed that the Enact had some potential.
As my friend said:

"If there is even just one truly comprehensive Mobile Suit multiplayer program, a GM 2 sniper can defeat a Wing Gundam based on specs and equipment alone, not yet fatoring in pilots/players."

The Leo, there was a local anime convention and one of the panels they did every year was "Vs. A Leo" and the challenge was to name something that a Leo could defeat.
Through some pretty convoluted logic it could even lose to a wet paper bag according to the guy running the panel.

My two cents: Even though suits like the Leo and the Zaku II were trashed en masse, they still highly performed their roles as MS shock troops.
True but The Serpents on Gundam Wing Endless Waltz would have taken out the gundam units with their mass numbers. Much like how the later Zakus would have done the same.
What we shouldnt forget is that the Leo is still the cheapest basic option, Virgos wiped the floor with the Wing and Shenlong Gundam and 3 Taurus Dolls were usually enough to destroy whole Leo squads. The Leo isnt bad, but everything else was just better.
When Leo and Zaku II are introduced, they are not designed as anti MS roles.
When both series gundams are built, they are intended for this role. This is why you see those grunt MS use anti ship weapons hoping to punch through that armor.
Later MS, built with dealing with mobile suits in mind, tend to have better chances.
Ughh I remember watching Wing, all it took for a Leo to explode was a glance aimed in its general direction. And then you got that scene where Trieze was on one and it did NOT explode despite being shot at. Trieze must have increased its HP 10 times...
Yeah, I think that was animators being lazy. So a suit getting outclassed by better enemy piloting turns into 'barely better than running out there covered in paper mache'.

I haven't seen the Video and the Comments but I can bet at least half of my Life Savings that the Windam is in this video.
I feel that the problem with the graze was that it swung on that period of cyclical military development when the armor was better than the weapons. Suits such the barbatos were noted for having stronger frames that allowed larger weapons without risking structural integrity. So normal suits had to use regular swords, instead of big ass maces. So when faced with similarly powered opponents, the fight would mostly be them plinking off eachother's armor for a while before eventually getting a kill shot. And most opponents would actually be even weaker than that, since the graze was one of the 'better' grunt suits.
When a 'serious' fight is decided over the course of 10 minutes, rather than the instant smash or shots.... well... you have a lot more time to monologue. It is easier to see you are losing and just surrender/flee. Fights against 'powerful' opponents just became silly duels, while most other fights were simple mopping up.
It's also worth noting that in IBO, there really isn't such a thing as a "grunt" suit. If you're in an MS, you're supposed to be at least a certain level of threat. grunts were in mobile workers. Bits and pieces of those first Graze units tekkadan captured wound up getting contstantly rebuilt, reused, and passed on to other pilots to good effect throughout the series. Graze-->Graze Custom-->Ryusei-go -->Shiden Custom. It was only in the last one that it retired the original Graze frame they captured on Mars, but still used some peripherals and carried over the combat data. The latter seems to be more important in IBO than the frame itself.

It's supposedly exactly the same as the Age-1.
Even in the show, Flit discusses how well the Adeles performed in test runs, only for them to get destroyed by Dorados in their first actual sortie.
Meanwhile, his Gundam Age-1 Flat has no issue taking down hordes of Dorados and matching superior suits.
It's particularly egregious when Adeles struggle against older suits like the Gafran and Baqto that the Age-1 was able to beat 25 years ago.
I chalk that up to inexperienced pilots. They've been doing the war for a very long time. Pilots need to be swapped out.
I like the Leo. I’m sure that it’s “actual universe,” rather than it’s animated universe, can be a formidable MS with the aid of good military training.

I always liked the Gundam wing grunts especially the virgo and its successor.
0080 was my first Gundam anime, and looking back on it it's amazing it didn't give it up after the first battle, especially the moment where a GM shoots itself because Mikhail shot its hand (I have no idea how this is supposed to work and the way it is animated makes it even more confusing). The more I watch it, the more I'm wondering if we're just supposed to laugh at the Federation pilots being slaughtered and stan Cyclops Team... which is, annoyingly, what a large part of the fandom seems to do. Honestly this goes for most of the OVAs in general : a lot of the grunt battles have this weird dark humor to them.
And god, the General Revil is such a wasted potential. It's an improved Dogosse Giar which carries four elite MS battalions... and it just gets humiliated by Full Frontal and, most infuriatingly, Angelo (is this jerk even a newtype ?). But hey, at least they're still alive- nope, Narrative happens and it gets detroyed after only taking out one outdated Zeon ship. A few Jegans survive the explosion, but if my memories are correct they just get killed by the Neo Zeong.
Sometimes I wish the Titans (and their offshoot the New Desides) had remnants / still existed. They were the most professional of all the hardcore Feddie allied branches.

I love the Leo. I just came to find a place to say this. It's designed as a jeep or Sherman with legs. It doesn't have to be without equal, it just has to be useful and plentiful.

The Leos were excellent suits, their seeming easy elimination is a testament to how much better the gundams were and how much better the gundam pilots were when they weren't pulling their punches as they were doing in EW. Better MS with better pilots and usually the element of surprise/better tactics vs standard issue grunts the result is obvious. When the Gundam pilots went up against Oz's elite Leo troops that was a different story all together. They fought Duo and Quatra to a standstill and would have defeated them were it not for Wufei stepping in to save their bacon.
a good way to describe Leos vs Tallgeese and the gundams: They had a higher operational floor, but a lower operational ceiling. Because they were toned down for ease of use they had a pretty low learning curve and even a marginal pilot could operate one competently. TG and Co were high end precision machines that were practically nonfunctional in the hands of anything other than an ace, but were capable of ridiculous shenanigans when used to full effect.

It's also worth noting that Carta Issue was using what appeared to be anti-mobile armor tactics in her first encounter with Tekkaden. If you take Hashmal's behavior into account and then look at how Carta approached Tekkaden, it becomes quite obvious that she was using techniques made to minimalize damage from the mobile armors in order to apprehend them. A clear sign of her inexperience as she was literally just using by the book tactics that don't work on human enemies.
