@@aditya5162 they can try, but the cost to shape opinion on that scale is enormous. That's why Steven said he'd find their position more understandable if they were talking about Amazon, Facebook, etc shaping opinion. They have the funds and in some cases own some of the levers.
So ask yourself if they can control US sentiment why did we leave Iraq, Afghanistan? Why aren't we rolling tanks in Ukraine? Why do they allow public dissent against Israel?
The answer is because the government can't control it as directly like China or Russia can.

And I think the US government knows this too. The fact that a gun youtuber is running to be a Congressional Candidate and doing really well is enough proof for me to see that the US Government has no interest in controlling thoughts.
However, if you go to a country like Russia. Its so blaringly obvious its a different story. I think he was moreso arguing that the influence an agency like the CIA could have is insignificant compared to the influence that CNN/FOX/ETC have due to the absurdly different scale at which they operate and are funded
Who's the US government in this case? Unlike Russia or China or Saudi Arabia, countries with dictatorships run by 1 man at the top, the US is a democracy with different checks and balances, the Biden, Trump and Obama administration are all going to have different interests, the DNC and RNC are going to have different interests, the SCOTUS and congress have different interests, private corporations and individuals who lobby politicians have different interests, the media has different interests, individual States and municipal governments have different interests and all of these are determined by the voting population at the end of the day. Obviously there is propaganda coming from each side but they competing with all other forms of propaganda, there isn't one individual controlling the consensus here.
