The guy who said he hadn't seen Stevie in 20 years was producer Richard Dashut. He wasn't saying they hadn't seen each other that long, just that they had not been in that studio together in 20 years. Watch the live video from 1997 live album The dance of the song Silver springs and you will see at the end of the song that the tension between Stevie and Lindsey never went away.
The guy that said ‘I haven’t seen you in 20 years’ wasn’t part of the band. He was the guy that produced (or mixed, I didn’t catch it) the album. Fleetwood Mac continued to have success long after Rumours. They may not have sold as many albums as Rumours, but that’s one of the All-Time, best selling albums in history. Their next album, Tusk, sold a bunch too, as did Tango in the Night, which was made in the 90’s, I believe. They’ve been a monster band since the first album with Lindsay & Stevie.
I always wonder which songs Stevie thinks Lindsey didn't do his best on. On this album she says he was unhappy with her - yet he played, composed music for, arranged and produced Dreams, Gold Dust Woman and even Silver Springs which didn't make the cut. She never had a better arranger or producer and Tom Petty agrees. Christine McVie on Dreams - “’Dreams’ developed in a bizarre way. When Stevie first played it for me on the piano, it was just two chords and one note in the left hand. I thought, This is really boring, but the Lindsey genius came into play, and he fashioned three sections out of identical chords, making each section sound completely different. He created the impression that there’s a thread running through the whole thing”. Stevie on Dreams: "I remember the night I wrote 'Dreams.' I walked in and handed a cassette of the song to Lindsey. It was a rough take, just me singing solo and playing piano. Even though he was mad with me at the time, Lindsey played it and then looked up at me and smiled. What was going on between us was sad. We were couples who couldn't make it through. But, as musicians, we still respected each other - and we got some brilliant songs out of it." This configuration of the band stayed together until Lindsey Buckingham left in 1987 - 10 years after Rumours was released and after producing Tango In The Night - their second biggest worldwide seller. It was believe it or not a recording experience Lindsey called the worst of his life because 3/5ths of the band was deep in the throws of addiction and were barely present to record over a period of 17 months. He did not want to go on the road with them for a year. Mick said tour or you're out thinking Lindsey would then stay and tour. He left. A few years later after two albums where the first did not hit platinum and the next didn't even chart Stevie then Christine respectively left the band. They had a reunion called The Dance in 1997 (where that performance of Sliver Springs is from) and at least 4 out of 5 then toured together until 2019.
As others pointed out, Stevie shook producer Richard Dashut's had cordially and they had not seen eachnother in thst studio in 20 odd years. Between 1968 and 1974, Fleetwood Mac had many guitarists and released 10 albums. Two went gold and one platinum in the US. Stevie and Lindsey joined fir 1975's Fleetwood Mac which broke 7mil in the US. Rumours (1977) was 21mil, US. Tusk (1979) was 2x platinum, but only 1 mil copies, as it was a double album. Each disc counts towards the total. Mirage (1982) sold 2 mil copies. Tango in the Night (1987) sold 3 mil copies. Lindsey left later that year. Behind the Mask (1990) did feature Lindsey playong acoustic guitar on the title track, but the rest of the album featured Rick Vito and Billy Burnette both on guitars/vocals. It only sold 500K copies. Then Stevie and Rick Vito quit. Time (1995) bombed. It didn't even chart in the US. The new lineup was Christine McVie on vocals and keys, John McVie and bass, Mick Fleetwood on drums, Billy Burnette on guitars snd vocals sbd new members Dave Mason (solo artist and co-founder of Traffic) on guitars and vocals, and Bekka Bramlett on vocals. She was the daughter of the shortlived band and marriage Bonnie and Delaney. Lindsey sang back up on one track. This line-up immediately broke up. In 1997, the Rumours line-up reunited and recorded the live album/video, The Dance. It sold 5 mil copies. They did a 44 show tour and Christine retired as a full member. Their final studio album, Say You Will (2003) sold 500K. It was the Rumours line-up minus Christine McVie who was only a guest and played on two songs only. They coaxed Christine McVie out of retirement in 2014. Lindsey was fired in 2018. He was replaced by Mike Campbell (Tom Petty) and Neil Finn (Crowded House). Christine McVie died in 2022 and Stevie said the band would not continue without her. One of the people credited on Rumours under "Thank yous" was their drug desler.
You are so right about how hard it was to tour these songs years later! Check out The Chain, Live 1982. Lindsey and Stevie singing harmonies and glaring at each other in an absolute rage...it's an incredible thing to see and feel. The line 'running in the shadows' at the end is because Lindsay caught Stevie coming out of Mick (the drummers) bedroom one night during the recording of this...just to add to the drama!
She was infuriated by the lyrics Packing up, shacking up is all you want to do - said she wanted to run across the stage and kill him every night. You can see the 1977 official video - he's not even looking at her and she's glaring at him and aggressively banging her tambourine. She complained about Go Your Own Way being "mean" for the next 40 plus years. Of course her songs about him were all sweetness and light. LOL.
The band recorded & toured, most of the members quit & returned at various times, Lindsey started a fight with Stevie onstage & when the band left the stage Christine went back and slapped him, lol. But they always ended up coming back together, recording & performing live, even up to when Covid hit. Now Christine McVie died this year. Their official last show was in 2019 but some member performed together in 2020. Great reaction, guys.
I have an old interview with Stevie from a radio show, probably 1979 during the "Tusk" sessions, and she says about "Dreams": "I made everyone come down there and listen to it because it sounded really great. They weren't nuts about it. So I said "Please!" (laughs) "Please record this song, at least try it." Because when I play something, it's usually very simple, you know. And they recorded it, and it sounded really great, and the vocal on it's a ref (?) vocal. I mean, I had a cold, I was sitting on top of this big amplifier with my Kleenex and my Vicks, and that's the vocal that's on the record."
About them performing live later, Stevie & Lindsey always had some vibes going back & forth onstage. Best example is 'Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs (Official Live Video) [HD]'. Stevie sings lyrics about him while facing away from the audience, towards him, and they lock eyes so intensely. It's almost like we're intruding on their moment. It's a very famous moment. ua-cam.com/video/eDwi-8n054s/v-deo.html.
You should check out the EXCELLENT concert film called ‘The Dance’ from their 1997 reunion. They have occasionally mentioned their interactions during that period, and most if not all of the old animosities had faded with age. Lindsay quipped that by that time they were more excited about “sharing new food recipes” than anything more provocative. But do look into that concert, which was filmed in front of a moderate size studio audience. They were in their performance prime.
You should check out the mini series Sound city, about the famous studio. Dave Groul and the foo fighters are the narrators. Really amazing. Also check their other documentary Sonic highways about different studios around America.
Yes! Get it on vinyl!! These segments are never long enough! I remember hearing Lindsay kicked Stevie on stage. And he and his new GF made fun of “I keep my visions to myself” Before Rumours, he made her go clean houses while he stayed home and wrote songs. 😢
Stevie cleaned their producer Keith Olsen's house for one week. Olsen said she was so bad at it he had them move in instead - it was cheaper. She waitressed part time. Lindsey was a session musician, he went on the road and he composed, played, arranged and produced their music. He had marketable music skills aside from singer/songwriter. He's the reason they got a record deal with the demos he recorded of them and the reason they got into FM.
Last night (9/15/24) in Boston, 2 members of the rock band, Jane’s Addiction, got into a fight on stage. Now the rest of their US tour is canceled. Adults behaving badly. 💜💜💜
Yes, but really one member attacked the other. Dave Navarro didn't react physically to being attacked. Perry Ferrell has some real issues. Dave had been on a break from the band for more than a year due to long Covid, so it sucks that he's feeling better now but Perry had to go and ruin it.
@@jenniferfoster1692 correct. I was trying to keep the story short & simple. The video of them is shocking but the real harm to fans is the cancellation of the future performances.
@@dianel222 Yes, it's really a shame. I read Dave & the 2 other band members' separate statement later, & they're saying this was coming for awhile, due to Perry's pattern of mental health issues & erratic behavior onstage. They were very bummed out about the situation for the fans. It's a shame.
The follow-up double album Tusk was less-well received by critics and a bit misunderstood by fairweather fans, if i remember correctly. Despite the differences, it's just as good and a bit more eclectic
Yeah, it’s a pretty good album. I just think the excesses of the time & them having to follow up such a huge album made it very difficult to live up to what they’d done on Rumours.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Yeah, no follow up was ever going to sell nearly as well even if they kept to the same style. That's why phenomenons are just that. Tusk is a masterpiece on it's own and by far their most interesting album.

Those isolated harmonies raised goosebumps everywhere on my body. Even my bald head tried to create hair to raise on its end

The guy with the bandana is John McVie, the “Mac” of Fleetwood Mac and Christine McVie’s husband.

I disagree. Happiness and joy can also make great music. But few people feel those emotions in the music industry.
Agreed. Their prior album to this one - the FM self titled- is also a great album and they were getting along.
