My wife is a nurse and used to work at a nursing home. Some of the folks there were wards of the state and all they had to wear were just a few old pieces of clothing that looked awful. My wife being the saint she is asked if I would go to goodwill with her and ask if they had any clothes to donate to the folks. "We don't do that here" Is the exact response we got. We drove down the street to St. Vincent De paul and they gave us 2 or 3 huge Garbage bags to fill up for them. Goodwill is worried about Goodwill.
After my parents died I took lots of their clothing to our nearby nursing home. Having been there for 10 months myself after a stroke, I saw the need.
When the Owner and president of a non profit pays himself a couple million a year in salary it makes me sick! No more Goodwill for us!!
@@TrentUhdeyes
Goodwill is only classified as a 501c3 because there’s no property tax. Churches can get the same tax designation. Other than that, goodwill is a form of profit company.
I could not agree more. Getting tax breaks as a non profit while the executives are profiting heavily. Thank you for this video.
I don't even donate to Goodwill anymore.
Same here
I try to find animal welfare thrift stores to donate to.
I donate to the Salvation Army
We don't either and our salvation army store just as BAD .
Nobody does 99 cent day , when goodwill stopped it salvation army stopped too !
Everything literally dropped at their doorstep freely and they greedily over price it all .
Me neither. I give to AmVets now.
They still have time to fix the problem, but GREED IS A KILLER
They’ll raise their prices as high as retail, which some items (used) are already close to new item retail prices. Lastly, those that benefit and are economically challenged lose out because of their greed. It’s absolutely pathetic.
How do you find greed is a factor when someone is complaining that they can't buy something from a retail store in order to retail?
What you said has absolutely nothing to do with Goodwill's greed
That's exactly the point it's not a retail store it's Goodwill their core mission is to help the community the poor in the community they've lost sight of their mission that's the problem their mission is now money not helping the community
@kidcryptic8193 who are you talking to?
Why is it that Goodwill doesn't get sued for selling "knockoffs".
Or any thrift store?
I found a pile of fake sunglasses a few months back. Left them sitting, but they were all gone the next time. Either someone got snookered or the store pulled them. Probably the former. OTOH a local charity sold me a fake Louis Vuitton wallet ... that wasn't a fake. (oops!) Buyer beware I guess.
Is that a question??????
@jamesconroy7030 No, I was making a statement, hence the period at the end.
@@joshhollis1888When it begins "Why is it" it's a question.
I dream of genie! Also, same with our Goodwill here. Not just bad for resellers, terrible for under privileged folks who used to be able to get things they needed at prices they could afford.
That’s what drives me nuts about Goodwill… since raising their prices they claim that their mission is to train workers. But… they actually got legislation passed that allows them to pay disabled people LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE!!! So, they claim that they overpriced all these items so they can help train disadvantaged workers, when they actually change laws so they can pay these people less than other companies pay these same people. PURE EVIL, in my humble opinion!!! It takes a special kind of mastermind to change your mission (or lean heavily into the mission you’ve always had, but customer’s perception), and then become a sweatshop with purpose, all the while having your name mean the exact opposite of what you’re really doing! Ugh.
Our Goodwill has gone crazy. They took away returns for a credit. Covered their electrical outlets so you can't test anything. Putting $40 and $50. stickers on anything remotely good. I always say "I'll see you at the bins" Everything else is chipped, scratched, missing pieces, or damaged in some way. Now you know why that woman at Flip Con called out the Goodwill speaker. 😂 We are ALL frustrated with them.
No returns?! The stuff I get at Goodwill is broken and useless so often, they'd lose essentially all of my business if my local shops did that. 😧
Here in Arizona they increased prices big time. And closed/removed all dressing rooms. What state are you in that they don’t do returns? I would be devastated if GW’s here in AZ would not accept returns.
Yes quit going to Goodwill a while ago.
I went to a small Goodwill in WV with my daughter, looking for something in particular -i was not sourcing. Clean, all the clothing racks were neat and color-coordinated, hard goods were neatly arranged. I made a point to let the Manager how nice the store was. I will go there often when I start sourcing again. I just moved to the area, bringing a huge "profit pile" with me. 😊
The stores all have picker employees now ever since 2020
I used to work at goodwill. The stuff they threw in the trash compactor shocked me. When someone donated and the stuff would be in a bag or box we were told to look through a couple of the stuff on top and if it looked bad throw it all away. We were told to go through it fast. I was being told all the time I looked at the stuff too long. Throw it away. We took big rolling carts full of stuff and threw in the compactor. I love old vintage stuff. Clothes, figurines, kitchen ware etc...I always tried to price it and put out. I had others go behind me and trash it. Frustrated me so bad. Everyone has different tastes. They priced stuff with different color stickers. They rotated colors every week. On sundays we would go in 3 hours before the store opened and pull and throw all the stuff on the shelfs that the color had rotated out. No matter what it was it was put in the compactor. We couldnt reprice at a lower price. I would ask why we couldnt mark down or put on a sale table. No. In the compactor. Employees werent allowed to shop on the days they worked. Even if we had the day off but had to come in for a meeting we werent allowed to come back to shop. They had mentally and physically disabled employees that they supposedly 'job trained'. The whole purpose of Goodwill in the first place. They paid them maybe a dollar an hour. People complain about china and children and others working for low wages. Goodwill is just as bad. Upper management didnt treat the disabled people good either. I spoke many times. Lol I live a couple blocks from goodwill. I go in there about once a month. Never find very much. Prices are ridiculous. $1.25 dollar tree items for $2+. I heard they are getting rid of bags. You have to start bringing your own. When I worked there a guy came in needing an outfit for a job interview. They wouldnt help him. The CEOS and upper management make lots of money. Employees dont. They used to send jewelry out to corporate to be sold online. People liked buying the jewelry in the store. Now they sell new cheap jewelry. They have alot of new things they sell now that is way overpriced. Yes it is greed. I know alot of people have stopped donating good stuff to them. They mostly donate junk they just want to get rid of. Dont cost them to take to the dump. They donate their good stuff to salvation army, benevolent society or a nonprofit thrift store we have here. Just a few things I know from working there. I love watching you. Keep picking. 😊
wow, thanks for that info...disgusting! I bought a TON of nice jewelry from the goodwill online location. The prices were fair, not anymore!! it's insane now...i don't shop online GW anymore.
I've been saying that about Goodwill for years. They hire disabled people so they can use legal loopholes to pay them like $2 or less an hour, on top of getting 100% of their inventory for free....yet people still defend them
The Goodwill is pricing themselves out of business. I don’t donate to Goodwill anymore. I don’t go in there as often as I used to. I am a 69 year old lady who lives by myself on SS.
You verified what we suspected: they don’t pay their employees, especially the disabled ones they’re supposed to help. A reckoning is long overdue. They should at least lose their charity status. We urge everyone to not give anything to them. There are so many other local charities that do wonderful things.
One word, greed. Our Goodwill stores in WV are terrible. All junk, they pull all the good stuff and send to be put online. People have caught on and their donations are now down, serves them right. I still stop once in a while but find very little.
We use to make a trip out of traveling to various goodwills - every community we had an opportunity. That stopped a handful of years ago. Recently, we were about 2 hours away for a regular doctor check up and decided to stop in at a few goodwills.. the only changes we've seen are the prices higher than most of the things I can find on Nordstrom's Rack! And, 75% of the store is now New STOCK not donated. We truly have ZERO interest in every walking inside one again. We are blessed with a few small rural thrift stores that are truly volunteer run and for the benefit of the rural communities. A majority of the items are priced well under $5 - with most at .50cents each. When our son was younger - he is 23 years old, and money was VERY tight (we were covering an older generation's expenses) we could NOT afford goodwill at that point either... they REALLY ARE NOT for those who are financially struggling. So, from our area, goodwill (and I am intentionally using lower caps!) is NOT a community minded organization.
I stopped shopping goodwill over 5 years ago when used shirts and kids shorts hit 4.99 and are dirty Nope I Am not shopping there ever
Our Goodwill’s are high and overpriced. Sadly a local chain that’s mission to help the homeless is even higher!!!
I have a local thrift near me that charges a little more than goodwill but it usually has good items worth it. Goodwill on the other hand sells vronen junk or stuffed animals with poop on them for $7.99+
YEP that is a reality where I'm at too! One women's shelter so called "thrift store" here has shoes now at $15-25 a pair....YES USED shoes like from Dillards and Macy's -Nothing crazy designer just regular shoes at horrendous prices.....its unbelievable.
@@gulfcoastsunset5879 Virtually EVERYTHING has gone up in price. Including the rent and utilities and pay for employees that GW and even local thrifts pay.
There are No good deals at ours. Jeans are $8.99 and higher. Shoes are high. It takes too long to search for good deals. I used to give my kids each $5 years ago and let them have fun looking. (15 years ago). It used to be fun, now its a chore. We just go by & wait for Yard sales. Its sad that those days are gone. We hope everyone has a great week. Spring is coming.
I was told that staff is looking up what things are worth on Ebay and re-pricing them just like re-sellers. The only cheap clothing is sleepwear. I found 2 robes with tags for $4.99 each. My sisters were both in nursing homes so I looked for clothing at thrift stores because the staff loses things.
In northern Indiana, Jeans 12.99-14.99. Shoes 19.99, well worn. I only do yard sales now. I have shopped Goodwill for 64 years. They only help upper management now. I give to the Mennonite restores.
Goodwill is Dead. Nothing but overpriced JUNK. It’s sad.
yep VERY sad!
So unfortunately this change in goodwill is due to resellers. I am from California and the increase in pricing and bad quality started here. I remember resellers going into goodwills and bragging about their finds to employees, they would say things like do you know how much I can sell this for and I love coming to goodwill fast and easy money. Well the managers were listening and one day I went up to a manager and asked her how she was doing and she was telling me about how she went on to UA-cam and saw people making videos on how much money they make off of thrift stores and what products to look out for that can make money. She also said that when she told the higher ups they said that they are aware of it and in a couple of months they will be installing employees called agents and that their job was to pick out anything that looked like it was worth money and look it up to sell on goodwills website. My friend this is just a response by goodwill, youtube resellers made them aware of how much profit they were leaving on the table. Good intentions or not UA-camrs are a reason why goodwill has changed their model. 5 years ago I was able to make a great side income to take my family on nice vacations and have extra money, but UA-camrs wanting to make money making content took the income away from honest resellers. Take that how you want it is just a partial part of the truth.
I'm sure all these "picker" channels on UA-cam had nothing to do with that
You are exactly right regarding Goodwill. The real issue is that the Goodwill is supposed to support those people that cannot afford or have the income to buy from the Walmart and other department stores. You are not able to go into a Goodwill and find clothing and shoes and stuff for your family because of the prices. It is cheaper to go to Walmart and the dollar store to get the same items. the system is broke. I used to donate to Goodwill and I am like you I do not donate to the Goodwill any longer. I donate to an organization that I know is there to serve the people it’s supposed to serve. I am also reseller so I do go to Goodwill, and I very rarely find anything. Me not being able to find items to resell really still is not the big issue. The big issue is the people that need Goodwill are not able to find what they need.
No, actually the mission of goodwill is to earn money to support their programs which help low income people in various ways. Selling low cost goods is or was just a byproduct of that. And I've watched many resellers buy something for $1.00 and then turn around and sell it for $60.00, $70.00 or more. I think in some cases it's the pot calling the kettle black.
@@lucyboosmomSO WHAT that a small percentage of items can be resold at a profit (when purchased by a knowledgeable reseller then sold on a worldwide marketplace.) Most of what is donated is worth very little. Goodwill should sell donated items at low prices to get some value from those donations, to benefit the public, and to keep stuff out of landfills. Instead, they mark things up because they either can't stand the thought of resellers making money, or because it's some sort of tax dodge/business scam, or both.
@@lucyboosmom And? Reminder: Goodwill didn't buy the stuff they sell.
Most people who resell are doing it to make extra income, certainly not to get rich. Very few resellers do it as a full time job. Reselling is WORK. Sourcing, pricing, photographing, shipping etc. All of that takes time, dedication, and money. Goodwill, and any thrift is NOT just to help low income people the way you claim. It's also to provide affordable items for people who can't afford retail - low income people, in other words. Also thrifty people who can't stand retail prices. Taking away the "good stuff" and selling it online is really not helping. It's more like driving people away.
As I said, thrift stores such as Goodwill sell stuff that is DONATED. Last time I checked, donated means FREE. If a reseller buys it and resells it SO WHAT? Everybody is trying to stay afloat in this economy, including resellers. The resentment of resellers, and the way thrifts handle pricing because of it, is ruining things for EVERYONE, including the people they say they are trying to help. But thrifts would rather blame it on the resellers.
Note: I am not a reseller, but I follow a couple of resellers and I know some personally. I know how hard they work.
@@lizlee6290 First of all, I resell off and on and I know exactly what's involved. And there is a hell of a lot more sellers who sell full time than you think, especially since covid. The fact that the items are donated to goodwill has nothing to do with it. People donate so they can resell them to make more money for their programs or sometimes just to get rid of stuff they don't want to bother with and, once they ARE donated, they are theirs to do with as they see fit. If you have a yard sell you can sell your items at any price you want, and nobody has the right to tell you otherwise. It's the same thing with good will or any other business. I don't know what you're trying to say about resellers since you contradict yourself, but really, I don't care. The bottom line is if you don't like their prices shop elsewhere. We'd all like it if they sold things for practically nothing, but they can do whatever they want, and you can't change that.
I never depend on goodwill as a sourcing option. Every so often though they drop the ball and put something out that’s gold. I found a 4 piece canister set last week for $12 that I sold for $80.
Goodwill in Chicopee, Massachusetts is a train wreck. The floors are filthy and the “merchandise” on the shelves are never organized, sometimes dirty and grossly overpriced. I still check once a week but I haven’t bought anything in months for ourselves or to resell.
Kevin, great show and definitely a tough subject.
Oh, sorry to hear that! I haven’t gone to that one
I’m in Massachusetts too. The Goodwill around here is shameful…… Savers too!!!!! Better off at Walmart
Management problem.
goodwill is so bad that they will charge people $30 for a broking radio
well, the radio probably wouldn't be there if it was still working...
@@saradean5523or it wasn't broken when it was put out

Wow, that's a rare brand.
@@cheeseheadflipperIt wasn't broken. It was broking.
Prices have gone WAY up at most of our Goodwills. I think they are getting too big for their britches!!
I ran a goodwill or three. Goodwill is 155 different companies. The one I worked for had 25 stores. Another one in my state only had several stores. They have different pricing different programs and various other differences. They're all blanketed under goodwill international. They all have their own CEO.
Q
I used to donate huge amounts of goods to Goodwill all the time. One fine day, after having dropped off my donation, I decided to go inside the front door and chat with the worker.
The young man was a cashier. I had 2 questions. #1 if a homeless person walked 🚶♂️ in on a rainy 🌧 day in genuine need of a jacket, will you give him or her one for free? He answered No. I commented that they are getting merchandise for free 😂 and I showed that days donation receipt. The next question was for the cashier himself. I asked him how much he was getting paid and does he get enough hours to cover his own bills. He answered he was just a part time worker getting minimum wage. I pointed out the article showing how much the CEO of Goodwill was getting paid, yet the homeless guy on a rainy 🌧 day, they won't have compassion on...not even a blanket or a jacket.
THAT CONVERSATION ENDED MY DECADE LONG DONATION TO GOODWILL AS NO GOOD WILL WAS SHOWN TO THE HOMELESS PERSON IN GENUINE NEED.
Q❤
No bathrooms, no dressing rooms, junk merchandise, price tags over chips and cracks, tape up broken merchandise so you can't see it, ridiculous prices, etc i don't shop or donate to them anymore.
You do realize YOU GUYS are the reason the thrift stores are doing this right! You tuber resellers have wrecked thrifting for everyone else. This used to be a well kept secret but thanks to you guys not only have you shown everybody and their dog that their is money to be made but of coarse the thrift stores have caught on and are cashing in so thanks alot! What did you think was going to happen when you sold your souls to youtube!
To be honest I believe that Ebay combined with the Smart Phone is the reason for this. Do you really think that nobody at goodwill would have been smart enough to figure this out without UA-cam resellers?
Come on Kevin, ebay and the smart phone have been around since mid 1990s and there was no issues with reselling until UA-cam blew it up! YOU guys have basically let the cat out of the bag and have given everyone and their very own how to videos! Yes I am sure eventually they would have figured it out! BUT YOU tube literally just over the last few years or since you guys, ADHDave, Home School Picker, Parttime Picker Froggy Flips and so on started all these Chanels, have blown it up 1000% and now here we are! Look at all the other youtubers like yourself trying to cash in, even hanging out together for more likes while at the same time making it harder for the rest of us IMO!
Metro Phoenix GoodWills are ridiculous.. Examples old rusty cast iron skillets 12”- $39.95. Ralph Lauren men’s shirt used $29.95… Foot traffic noticeably decreased
It's insane! Generic jeans are 1499-19.99. Used fast fashion dresses are 29.99, more than new. Forget the online sales I think they're just hoping to sell the bails to secondary sources. Kids books that are small and one-two words in fair condition at best are 4.99. Used unmatched bed sheets are 14.99 each. Crazy high. Of course they need to make a profit, pay wages, etc. etc. etc. And, in fairness, office space rent in Phoenix has 5x over past decade. But still no excuse for these prices. And how for the 5th largest metro in US is there only one bins? And it's a lottery system to get in? Their stores are no where as busy as they used to be, even a few years ago.
My Goodwill is an absolute junk shop mess. Prices have become very high!!! I used to pay $.49 for each plush, now they are individually priced at $3.99 and up. Shoes are usually around $12.99. Luckily they have opened a Goodwill bins 30 min away from my house and I still found really good deals. Love your content!!!! Thanks for all that you do!!!!!!!
I knew one of the founders of the Goodwill, many years ago! She would be very saddened to know that this is how things have ended up
Good morning, Kevin, I agree with you on the Goodwill Issue. It seems like they are not stocking their stores or if they do it's just junk. I believe since they started selling online that they are saving all the "good" stuff for online selling. Our local Goodwill is 45 min away from us and is a disappointment when we visit. Never fear garage season is almost here and that's where the "good" stuff is. Have a happy day to you and your family and kiss all your fur babies from me from the UP of Michigan🐶🐱
In Central PA the stores are hit and miss. Some have empty shelves, some have stopped selling used items and only sell new, some are boutique stores which higher prices and less selection. We've had a few stores close in rural towns - stores that were really needed by those communities - because they didn't turn enough profit. We had a very nice bins store here but it got moved to a far off industrial area and it is filthy now. There are still deals to be had but you have to know your stuff and look very hard. And you have to not get upset by the fact that greed seems to have taken over. It's definitely cheaper to buy new at Walmart for clothes than to buy at Goodwill.
You think the Middletown bins are gross? I thought it was super clean in there but I haven'y been in awhile. I remember a few years ago the Lemoyne Goodwill was so good now it's awful. The Harrisburg area has gone way downhill fast. I only stop at Community Aid when I pass through now.
@@ER-pc3dx I liked the bins in Camp Hill much better. The day I went to Middletown the whole place smelled like someone had peed in everything. Was just awful. :-( I just don't bother. Community Aid is better - especially the one in Selinsgrove.
Very disappointing now! Especially in the Raleigh NC area. The prices had skyrocketed and they ARE for profit now. Gone are the days of great prices at GW😞
My local Goodwill prices are out of control. Used pants..$8.99. I had a Goodwill employe @ checkout, take an item from me, leave the register, walk to back room in the store , only to return with a new price tag on the item....higher price. I said that's not fair, how can you do that, he replied employee had priced it wrong. Reported the incident. Then recently, 2 Goodwill employees came out of back room with a cart. I walked over to cart, then one of the employees immediately grabbed some items off the cart & placed items into a customer's shopping cart. The other employee started laughing. Dyson vacuum & Coach handbag. It was definitely planned.
I'm in the Raleigh area as well. I went to Goodwill a few weeks ago just out of curiosity and there was basically nothing in there.
@@luckyduckystore oh myyyyy! That’s insane!!!
@@allenmartin4694 or when you DO see something you’re interested in, the price is so high, you can’t afford it. It’s crazy! Plus, writing on items using a permanent marker… don’t get that!

Something to think about. When it comes to Salvation Army it's us the people in the community who raises the money not them. Who donates money to the kettle ringers we do, who donates toys to the toy drives we do, who donates food and can goods to the food drives we do, who donates goods to salvation army we do, us the people do all the giving while they just sit and receive and get all the credit. The programs they offer for men , much of that is not free , some is funded and some participants have to pay. Salvation just does more of organizing the fund raising we do the actual donating.
I overheard the manager at my local goodwill training an employee and telling them that anything worth more than $25 on eBay goes direct to the online store.
😮....yep i can totally see that!
They prob try to do that but I found several 40$-+ items
Yes but they have to be able to attract people with the knowledge and experience to identify those items. Younger folks who have been raised in a "throw it away after use culture" will not appreciate or recognize the value of vintage or antique items which have high value. Knowledge is the key. I look at a vintage rotary phone with warm nostalgia while a younger may see it as an oddity nobody could possibly want. I love them and the same goes for old radios. As someone with direct knowledge a lot of these type of items are discarded and sent to the crusher.
Unbelievable 😡
I live in a smaller town with one goodwill, one Salvation Army, and one habitat for humanity store. 80% of my sourcing comes from goodwill. The prices are reasonable for the most part. Tshirts are $2.49 adult shoes are $6.99. All media is .99 as well as puzzles and board games. I usually do well there as a Part-Time reseller who spends about 6-7 hours in there weekly,
Sounds like a rare dream Goodwill!
It's supply and demand. Resellers have driven demand at goodwill, prices go up. Smartphones are what killed goodwill for sourcing. Picking at thrift stores is really picking for beginners, if they are your primary source you really need to expand your horizons.
I dream of Genie, as a quiet subscriber. This may be my first comment here. I enjoy your calm, conversational style your kids’ participation, and the items in your “Commonwealth Cabin.” Thanks for sharing your experience with me and your other viewers!
Thank you for commenting. I appreciate the kind words and thank you for watching. Comment again some time.
I absolutely can’t stand Goodwill. They are not in business to help people in need. They are extremely greedy. I am in the East Texas area and they are outrageous on everything example $5-7 for cap and plush.. then when it don’t sell, they ship it off to bin store which they practically give it away.
I’m in my first year of selling on eBay so I still have tons to learn. Love watching all your videos. Thanks for sharing…
“I Dream of Genie” would be extremely helpful.
You are so right, I have been so done with Goodwill in South Carolina I only go to thrift stores and yard sales now, and I am not a online seller just a mama and a grandmother trying to find good deals for mine. I love what you and your family do I watch you were religiously keep up the good work.
I have become a Goodwill bins shopper. The majority of my items come from the bins. I do hit estate sales and some smaller thrift stores, but most of the Goodwill thrift stores are overpriced, so I find great stuff at the bins. Sometimes the price tag is still on the items and I see the high price and realize that is why it ended up at the bins.
Yesss this is the way! We also look for church sales and school sales!
It’s because they have their own online auction site so anything good that gets donated is pulled and shipped to a different facility where they look everything up and post it on their site.
They have been doing that for many years
A lot never hits shelves unless they make a mistake.
@@CHRISTINEDIAMOND-y3l yeah I’ve done a service call at one of their on-line locations. They have some nice stuff there. But the local stores don’t have anything worth buying.
Oh, u got tired of crying about ebay, now u wanna cry bout goodwill... bro, stop crying about everything already... I'm mailing u some tissue for all these crying fits...
At my local GW I have observed the same higher pricing crap but also A LOT of dishonest employees passing off really valuable items to friends and family. I have witnessed items priced very high to deter anyone from purchasing it until the "intended person" shows up and suddenly at the register it's rung up a whole lot less. I've witnessed mgmt members on a regular basis come out of the backroom with merchandise and hand it directly to a friend/family member. I intercept so much stuff hidden by employees around the store, it's ridiculous!
I dream of Genie. Our goodwill is way over priced and i haven't shopped or bought from them in years. I went before Christmas and I couldn't believe the prices on such crappie shoes. We have a couple of other thrift stores but there prices are high too. One had a brand new reebok sweatshirt priced higher than our Walmart, it is really crazy. I used to donate and shop for us but I definitely don't donate because people need to be able to get good clothes at a reasonable price, we have a Facebook group where we share with each other. No one charges anyone for anything, its really great. Thank you for sharing 😊❤ see you on whatnot hopefully 😊
My Local, tag sales 25%. Prices have been super high. My guess is that Management Sees All of your Flipper Video's... Another Old Favorite, now has an in House Flipper. So for us that Need to shop Thrift to make ends meet, or some of us blended have need for price and also believe there is toooo much Stuff ... So All U "Pickers" Suck
11:12 kevin yep where i am the goodwill's id say early 2000's to late 2000's they had huge wooden square bins one would be filled with toys another with clothing another with electronics id find vintage toys (wrestling figures, transformers, GI Joes, Smurfs you name it i found it i would stop in the goodwill at least once a day) a lot of the toys were priced .25 books back in the day .49 paper back. 99 hardbacks Movies vhs and Records and Cassette tapes CD's DVD's were .99
Before I even watch this total video, my opinion is that us resellers have caused GW to raise prices. They watch the videos of all the resellers that brag about getting something at GW and making a fortune on it. Of course that is going to make them raise prices and continue to do so. I heard their own staff talking about it years ago before UA-cam was such a big thing.
You know things are bad at goodwill when they have to start selling drinks and Dollar Store Items at the checkout line!
The Goodwills here are horribly priced ,,, some of their prices are actually higher than retail … Even had a Goodwill spy on these comment totally deny they separate what they think are luxury brands and throw it on their website to be auctioned off … the local GW workers here CONFIRMED that they do this
I love Garage and Yard Sales or Live Auctions for sourcing better than Goodwill.
Goodwill's have turned into McThrift stores. I collect vintage shirts, mostly to save or wear, not to sell (yet). I went by one the other day. There must have been 200 shirts, and every single one was a modern repro or generic brand. Only a few of them had a tag (most were printed on labels), and those tags were worthless Gildan brands. Almost everything else in the store was worthless, overpriced junk. The few things I cared enough to even look at the price left me shaking my head...a few were double what a sane person would pay given the condition (i.e. a used DVD player without remote for 29.99).
My Goodwill has T-shirt's priced at $4.99 and nothing vintage. I'm afraid that because of space issues, any T-shirt that's faded or looks old, they trash.
Piss on goodwill. Gets stuff FREE and puts big prices on it.
I’m a teacher and I started reselling in 2021 as a side hustle. My main source was Goodwill. But the ones in my areas have started going through and individually pricing items. Now a pair of jeans is almost 9 bucks. They separate the Nikes and name brand shoes and charge like $20-$25 for them
And yes the argument could be made “Well that’s what you are going to do”
But Goodwill gets this stuff given to them. It’s all profit for them
I find that there is too much competition. Everyone and their mothers, literally, are searching for items. And everyone now can sell their own stuff, so tyey sell it online instead of donating it.
It’s not just Goodwills, the Bible thumper thrift stores are just as bad, if not worse. Such Godly good people hahahaha
Most of the "bible thumper" thrift stores are run by volunteers and are making money for the community, at least. Like for a food pantry or homeless people.
@@kmb1704 Whatever helps you sleep better. For your information, I’m not talking about church’s.
I agree completely! I quit sourcing there months ago. I have moved on to other thrift stores that actually help battered women, homeless and disabled veterans. I also donate to these thrifts and not Goodwill anymore. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has noticed this.
Have not shopped at Goodwill for over two year because of the reasons you mentioned. Same thing is happening at my local Salvation Army. Now I see it trickling into some of my local thrift stores.
Where abouts to you live?
Nearby Goodwill locations have all become overpriced. Not just potential picks, but the ‘junk’ as well. They are not nearly clean and organized as they used to be. One of the locations is now pulling better items and putting it up on the goodwill auction site. I will now only go in, if I’m there donating, otherwise forget it.
yep ours is a trashed unorganized mess of literally anything on the shelves all jumbled together for a million dollars an item ..LOL JK... but total overpriced carp 85% of the time. Literally single rolls of Scott toilet paper for $3 a roll. NO JOKE. SCOTT not Charmian LOL😜
goodwill was the only thrift shop in are small town for 10+ years on the 15th of this month a snt vincent depaul is opening up now. I've noticed are good will store has started to look cleaner now & prices have started to go down. I think they are getting ready for competition in the town now. how ever things are still way over priced. when you see dollar tree items that are 1.25 in area at the goodwill for 3.99.. you know somethings wrong lol.
I agree with you. Yes, items priced above some retail prices. Item would sit on the shelves for week and weeks. Goodwill has lost their way. I know many people that will not donate to them and will not shop their retail stores. Also, some time ago, my sister and I went because it was near and wanted to donate/clean out her truck before heading out of town. We pulled up out back right as they were opening and they were throwing boxes of goods in the dumpster. Many, many boxes of goods.😮 The man taking our donations was rude, disrespectful and arrogant. Never did get a thank you. It is sad what they have become. Again, they have lost their way.☹️☹️☹️
Oh...and I Dream of Genie. Forgot to mention that during my Goodwill rant.
Now new to the channel!! I can't believe that some of VHS tapes are worth so much!!!🔥 I have collected so many!! Plus have the star wars set!! I do have some of those toys you showed!!
Thank you for sharing!!
Goodwill sucks. Point blank. Creepy old guys walking around in red hats and blue shirts looking dorky af.
I wear red hats and blue shirts.
@@Pauls_Merch that's why you are a goober
@@gearupsurvival3144 this is true.
i worked at a goodwill in LA area, they straight up told me they are a RETAIL business , not a NON PROFIT
All a corporation has to do in order to file as a 501c3 non profit is to offer a benefit to the area…example would be if I owned a scrap yard but once a month accepted ewaste for free on one morning a month…I’m now considered a nonprofit and receive the tax benefit/exemption status of a nonprofit…so they’re “hiring” people just out of rehab or prison but they fail to mention they only pay them $2-$3/hour instead of minimum wage which is more insulting and drives people back into whatever causes them to get into trouble to begin with
I am a Good Will Bins shopper BUT I used to go into our local Good Will Retail store for a calmer more relaxing shopping environment and occasionally I could find items I could resale for a small profit. Since 2024. That Good Will has Jacked up their prices so high its stupid. Items that used to be $2.99 are now $19.99 24.99 & 29.99....for small glassware. These items are donated, free to Good Will. Where has their "Good Will" gone!?! I found my self getting mad then laughing cuz as you said Kevin....it will all end up at my Good Will Bins.
I totally agree with you Kevin. All of the Goodwills by me have got very greedy. The plush have went from 25 cents to individually priced 6.00 a piece and more. Shoes have gone from 5.00 a pair to 15.00 to 20.00 a pair and more. Clothes and everything has shot up in price. They keep items they look up and are good money under glass and are way over priced. They also pick items that are collectible and sell them on Ebay. I refuse to go to them anymore. I go to the Goodwill bins and buy items by the pound. Many items are things they could not sell in the store because they are overpriced. Instead you can buy them pennies on the dollar from.
While vacationing in Fl, I literally had a goodwill employee snacth a squishMello out of my hand at checkout saying " Oh no that's not 50 cents!!" and took it to the back and came out 3 minutes later with a price of $10 on this dinky little mini squislmello with retail value of only 5-8 bucks LOL my response to the $10 was " Good luck w/ that - No thank you" it was the worst Goodwill experience Iv had in more than a decade at goodwills.
I own a bible based resale shop in our community where everything is donated. We are all volunteers, even me, when it comes to our time. We give non profits in our community anything they need from our store and monetary help. Our highest priced item is coats for 5.00. We have several resalers who come to our store and being a resaler myself, I understand the need to get things cheap. We keep our prices to where they can make money also. All most everyone who has donated has stated they will not donate to Goodwill due to the prices and no one sees how they help our community. Our nearest one is 20 miles away and there is never anything on their shelves and is so over priced. My son worked at this one as a manager not too long ago. He bought a pair of shoes after work, off the clock, they found out he sold them on ebay and they fired him over it. It was against their policy to resale items the staff bought! Really! Please people give to your local thrift stores. Most of them help your community, not the big boy's pocket.
Thrift stores have a mean-spirited attitude towards resellers. They know a lot of them buy stuff to flip for a profit but that doesn't mean the stores should hold back the good stuff to sell on Ebay. I'm sure if they put better stock on the shelves many resellers would be willing to pay something akin to online prices, or at least a price that's a fair in-between compromise. They're also doing their regular customers a disservice by selling low-quality items so i'm not surprised they're so quiet these days. I genuinely believe if they just put it all out there they'll attract more customers & make more money in the long run.
But what about those of us who are NOT resellers?
I'd like to find some fun stuff for myself.
My local goodwill is actually really good. I can go there a find signed big named picture for $5.99 and resell it for 100. But then again we only have one good where I live for miles and all the elderly people drop their old stuff there. There is 3 local thrift stores near by too.
I dream of Genie! Just started reselling and am realizing how much bookkeeping is involved. Been researching the different programs available and would love to give this a try. I really appreciate the fact that it's tailored for resellers. Thank you for all of the great content, Kevin, I'm learning so much watching your channels ☺
Goodwill in Peoria, Il goes on eBay to see what the cost is, then prices it just under that amount. The nic knack section never goes on sale for color or the week unless you get there when they open. Someone will come along with a sticker gun and retag it. They just put the new tag over the sale tag. It's been that way for years in my area.
yep here all 50% off color goes to $1.99 on sun and mon but what they do and i have seen it they go around Saturday night with a cart and PULL the Color of the week from the prior week off the shelf!!!) what do they think there losing money for selling at $1.99 when all week it would not sell for 50% off FOR GOD SAKES THESE ITEMS ARE DONATED how the heck would you think your LOSING MONEY??? RETARDS the inmates are running the asylum
I 100% agree with your assessment of Goodwill. It's been 5 or more years since I've stepped foot in one. They are a hollow shell of their self from 20 years ago.
The interesting thing about Goodwill is each region is essential a separate company so you can have vastly different experiences depending on what region you go to.
Most of our thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army & a few others) here in in east Iowa are pricy, rarely do I find deals. :( We do have a DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Thrift store that we can still find some deals at but you have to be there frequently because it gets picked over pretty quick. My husband and I very much enjoy watching & learning from you. Thanks for all you do :) Wishing you all the best to you and your beautiful family! PS - we are VERY jealous of your storage Barn sheds LOL!! we only have a 12x16 & it is packed with no room for anything larger. We will need to move if we wish to expand our thrifting business LOL!!
I’ve noticed that buying stuff on eBay is more expensive now. Used to be able to go on there and get some really good deals. Now it’s almost like sellers are more aware of the value of the stuff in their possession and they jack up the price
It is, at least in part, because the cost of shipping has gone up dramatically in the last few years (as have shipping supplies.) And as shipping goes up, so does the dollar amount we pay in fees to eBay since they take a cut of the shipping cost too.
@@johnathin0061892 I was being facetious in that resellers tend to dog out thrift stores for their pricing but it’s ok to buy those same items and sell them at a 500% markup. I’m not against either. The only reselling I don’t agree with is when people buy all of the stock of a new item and resell it online. That always seemed a little shady to me
I see what you did there, and I like it.
Still stop in from time to time, you never know when they will price something low, just check it out here and there, not as much as I used to but they do slip sometimes.
They're not dying they are becoming retail, just like you
I'm surprise it took them this long, for years and years they sat back and watched, as much as we don't like it if running a company, why wouldn't they want more profit. We noticed big city goodwill's are priced high not so much smaller towns.
I dream of Genie. Love watching and learning from you! I work full time and I just started reselling on Ebay. Awaiting my first sale 😊. Prices definitely went up at the Goodwills in Connecticut.
I always feel like goodwill stores are just fronts, they put out the trash just to have a "store" while they kill it on goodwill online/ebay lol
I know for a fact they do this. I am friends with a goodwill employee here. I asked why they are putting out so much of there own branded new products. It's entire isles of it now. They told me that corporate has really upped the volume on what gets sent to sell online and they have to fill the shelves with something or the store looks empty and customers stop coming.
Yes, the video games were a viewer sale. ☺ When you mentioned you found all that stuff and planned to list it, I regularly checked your new listings. I bought your GBA SP as well a day or two later. As far as Goodwill, the one closest to me has just gotten worse in the last 10 months since I moved here. Yesterday I went in to discover they reduced the glass case by more than half and all those items are gone. They also installed one of those dollar store style columns of phone accessories. I rarely go now because it's just not worth my time. There are too many other options in my area to find deals (I live within two hours of Dave and Rod). I just wish people would stop donating to Goodwill and donate more to the independent thrift stores.
It always amazes me how much variation there are at different Goodwills. I still find stuff at mine fairly often.
Same.
I haven’t been to a thrift store since before Covid. I get all my inventory from garage sales and online bulk purchases. I also get free stuff from family members and friends that are looking to get rid of stuff.
Just a reminder that they often pay some of their employees sub-minimum wage (sometimes a fraction of minimum), or are even paid by the government to employ people. They are allowed to do this in the guise of "job training", something I am normally bullish on, but Goodwill not only is overpriced but they also compete against resellers on eBay.
read my comments below i posted copy and paste of an article i found its a few years old but they have not changed there ways very interesting read
The Goodwills near me in northern NJ went to sh!t about 10 years ago. Like you, I used to go several times a week and find stuff all the time. These days I go a few times a year at most and leave aggravated most of the time. That said, I did pull a Porsche mug out of there for $3 that I sold for $40. Ha ha!!! Missed THAT one, didn't ya Goodwill!
Good. Will. Sucks
They’re taking all of the good stuff and checking ebay and putting it online
Indiana. They have not yet set up the boutique model that they have in Illinois, but some items have been repriced (Vera Bradley purses went from $4.99 to $9.99 overnight). Designer shirts went from $4.99 to $7.99. Jeans are $7.99. They are pricing themselves out of existence. Scrap quilting fabric was prices per piece, 12”-18” @.99 per and 1/2 yard - 1 1/2 yard $1.99 a piece formerly they were sold priced in a box or at least a plastic bag bundle.
I first started shopping at Goodwill 40 years ago - it was in a little hole-in-the-wall location, and I bought workshirts for my hubs for 10 cents each. The employee stood and watched us look, and brought out more from the backroom when we were done with what was in the front. Thirty years ago, there were 2 goodwills in different towns the same distance from my house. At one, you could buy gold and silver jewelry if you wanted to stand and untangle it all to get it out, and the books were a quarter. The other had wonderful antiques and all kinds of amazing finds. Clothing was a couple of dollars. I haven't bought anything at either of those for years. I found a couple of small thrift stores that consistently have something sellable and occasionally excellent finds, and patronize them - they are supporting good causes as well, so sometimes I make a little donation (especially if I feel guilty for what they charged me for something). I still stop in good will once or twice a year, but usually leave without anything. Like you, I used to love going to goodwill - at least once a week. I miss it still, it's just sad.
40 years ago I could get a soda in a glass bottle for 10 cents out of the vending machine too, but life is more expensive now.
I used to go to the Goodwill weekly, I go to the same goodwills as you, and I’m watching that new “Goodwill Temple” being built in Lynchburg and know it’s going to be like Ticketmaster with “dynamic pricing” where everything is priced different. I love board games, and used to get them for 1.99 at most, went to the Goodwill on Wards Rd, and some board games were over 10.00! C’mon! That is crazy for a Goodwill! Oh well! It will exist in my memories! Keep on pickin!
My Goodwills, Vaule village, Salvation armies are still good but they're really overpriced. Alot of Goodwills, Vaule village, Salvation armies in Goodwills now are taking all the good stuff and putting them online on their own sites or ebay.
I dream of Genie!
I dream of genie!
In Houston, they hired back room comp searchers as items come in. Except they go off listed prices and not solds. I’m sticking w gsales and estate sales only now. No time or gas to waste at this point. #facts. Bring back the outro music ? ✌️☘️
I’m only 1min in but I’m assuming you’re gonna say the stock sucks and anything good is over priced… yup… I gave up on goodwill during the pandemic
The goodwills are over priced in CA. But there’s one next to the Post office I go to, so I still stop by sometimes.
Recently I found a bunch of punk vinyls marked at $3 each surprisingly.
I dream of Genie. I'm also in VA. One of my 2 local Goodwills just closed. Up until recently, my Goodwills had .99 cent Sundays with two tag colors included in the sale. People lined up at the door like it was Black Friday and filled up their carts. Now they only have one color on Sundays for $1 and there is a huge difference in buying activity. Prices have increased on most things. I like the new hat system; also, it's helpful if someone else lists a hat, they know where to store it
We have a good bins & a couple of decent retail stores but NONE of the stores follow the same pricing, etc. We do have Salvation Army & Habitat for Humanity Restores.
actually went to goodwill this past weekend because I need more inventory to list .. haven't been in there in about 6 months .. it is a very very big goodwill store though .. actually did well and found two heavy stacks of books that are worth listing (no home runs but worth listing)
Some of the bins, like mine are being cherry picked of everything so the bins are only 1/2 full. Even then, the 2.79 price per lb and roached records, books/dvds/vhs they already scanned make the trip not worth it anymore. My Goodwill proper has turned into their internet prices. It would be cheaper to eat at Five Guys!
We made a very respectful salary last year sourcing almost exclusively from the Goodwill & their bins. However, ours do not have a lot of hard goods or sneakers so we sell clothes almost exclusively. Our garage sales are not really worth our time here in NC.
Bins is the only way
Goodwill has survived because of their “goodwill” but they’ve taken an amazing business policy of receiving free items and destroyed that “goodwill” by attempting to act as the market maker/reseller. It will fail and my story is the same as you Kevin. No desire to go in anymore, it’s a joke.
Goodwill is a joke. Even the grand openings have nothing. Grand openings used to be great . Now GW can't even give their customers ONE DAY. Their greed is killing them.
It's hard to judge the potential of a thiftstore based on a single visit. The greatest item you could possibly find might have been purchasing 5 minutes before you arrived, or might be brought out 10 minutes after you leave.
The selection when you walk in is just luck, whether or not you choose to buy something profitable is an aquired skill based off experience.
I live near Los Angeles and prices at Goodwill are 3x more than most of the country. Its difficult to make a profit but I go often enough that I do make good money.
