I'm already looking forward to your followup call to them on this in 2025 Sean. But don't worry, it will stop leaking when they run out of water. Sorted.
Wellington Council has ticked all the right multi cultural boxes and has trained all its staff in Diversity and Inclusivity but cannot fix a leaky fire hydrant. Just send some staff there at 2am to check it out when there is very little traffic and no buses...................
Why the hell can't they put a night shift team in to do it when the roads are empty and the buses aren't running? Auckland has closed down the whole of the northern motorway overnight for over 4 weeks, so if they can do it why can't Wellington.
Incompetence is so hard to fix. Close all at night! Job done. But the excuse of it being difficult, on top of water restrictions and Wellington being a 'green' environmentally friendly city it is contradictions all along tge way
That’s a better reply than I got from Wellington Water after my neighbours and I continued to report the leak at the end of our drive. “We know about that one,” they snapped.

Fun fact in Auckland. Firefighters are not allowed to check fire hydrants on behalf of Auckland council due to not having an approved traffic management plan.
The long term damage to the building infrastructure, wiring etc under the road is a worry. It may cause a sink hole also like Auckland that appears to be a major problem. Also, could this leak pose a problem for firefighters in not being able to get an adequate amount of water to fight a fire in the inner city?? Maybe you could call Health and Safety on this?? Just an idea. Play them at their own game... Lol

My point is that if Councilors " get stuff done" based on the last email compliant, 1 it's not a complete picture and 2 they have crossed over from a governance role the were elected to do into a daily operations role.

@tuliiscute I understand the squeaky wheel mentality. Quick search of Wellington Water website shows them having replaced 1665m of leaking pipe from 1 project alone in the last 12 months saving alot more water than the hydrant leak, there were 4 to 6 other projects aswell. I'd suggest the prioritization of those projects is the reason that the hydrant still leaks. A few years ago, I phoned my local regional council on a Saturday morning about oil 'leaking' into a river, leaving a huge oil slick. In the ensuing conversation about 'where', exactly, the call-taker was more concerned with my pronunciation of Maori place names! Late Saturday afternoon, somebody came to look, said that all resources to fix were unavailable because it was the weekend, and that they'd try looking during the upcoming week. Since then, all 'point outs' of issues to regional council staff on site by the river for whatever their original purpose have been met with, 'Don't know, not my job'! They couldn't give a monkeys!!! 😱
Auckland Watercare is no better. I lived by a stream in Otahuhu which feeds into the Tamaki estuary. Someone upstream kept dumping bright orange paint (and sometimes white paint) into it on a weekly basis. I took photos and videos of it happening and even collected water samples to show Watercare. I was told it was just dirt in the water washed in from recent rain. This would happen when it hadn't rained for days. After reporting it a dozen times I gave up bothering. It kept happening and nothing was ever done about it.
Brilliant. A council system that keeps everyone isolated and uninformed. What’s new. Nice one Sean. I’d like to see more of these examples of tracking down the whatever.
Sean your phone call could have come straight out of a Bob Newhardt sketch! One of his funniest was a sketch he did in the late 1960's where he was looking out of his apartment window to see a woman hanging out of a window in the department store opposite and he was trying to alert the department store about her... he was shunted from department to department, put on hold, canned music and endless mind numbingly dumb people to repeat his complaint to! Take some time and source it and have a laugh - obviously WCC and the Newhardt Dept. store staff went to the same training school!
