Nope, its totally real. It involves the family moving to a farm, it stars three puppies with one note character type (straight man, fat guy, girl), and Cruella De Ville is their neighbor and owns a billion dollar company.
Point is, the reviewer fucked up with that research. Big time. No seriously he actually spend time looking up English laws of the 1960s but didn’t bother to look up the 101 Dalmation cartoon since one of his rants involve the distinction between cartoons and general animation.
Good review overall, but this was definitely a critical research failure.
How's it possible to not know there DOES EXIST a 101 Dalmatians cartoon. We're getting a brand new 101 Dalmatians cartoon next year called "101 Dalmatian Street". The 90s cartoon did what the "Spectacular Spider-Man" cartoon did which was to take inspiration from all sorts. In the 101 Dalmatians cartoon's case the inspirations were the animated film, the live-action film, and the original novel.

Something I've realized - if Cruella WAS in jail for a time, it couldn't have been long. At all. If she's already on probation while the puppies are still puppies...? At least 102 Dalmatians paid attention to that timeline.

Sailor Sedna Dodie is only the author of the original novel, she never had any authority over what Disney does with their own adaptation.
the thing that I find very strange is that there are 99 puppies, yet only 1 feels unimportant and wants to stand out, I mean none of Patch's siblings stood out any more than he did so why does he feel all the emotions. Another thing is that while we didn't see much of Patch in the original what we did see he came across as tough, either way that Patch was clearly not the same character as the Patch in this film.Also I don't fully get what this movie and Rugrats have in common.
It's not that this movie and the Rugrats have anything in common. I was just suggesting a better piece of children's entertainment.
Fair enough, I loved Rugrats as a kid.
One thing I noticed that you overlooked, Patch is actually out of character compared to how he was in the original. In the scene where the Dalmatians watched Thunderbolt in the first film, they established him as being short-tempered, brash and headstrong. The fact that he says that he felt desire to hurt the villain in that show as if he were real and that his mother calls him out on it clearly shows what Bill Peet intended his character to be like. Here, they completely ignored that and made him a weak, passive runt with little self-confidence (he was able to bark just fine in the original). They got the position of his black ear wrong and ignored his implied friendship with Penny (he tells Penny not to worry when she frets about Thunderbolt getting hurt and she is seen responding to him later in the film how the Badduns didn't find them when they hid under the bridge on the trek back to London, yet she laughs at his attempt at barking in this movie). I also think they overexaggerated his interest in Thunderbolt. Yes it was obvious that he loved the show in the first film, but no more so than his siblings. I feel like they got Patch and Lucky's personalities mixed up when making this, (Lucky was the puppy who nearly died in the beginning of the first film) hell even in the beginning of this movie, Patch is sitting directly in front of the television much like how Lucky did in the original.
Granted, I can understand that you would overlook it as Patch only had a few minutes of screen time in the original, but I thought it would be worth mentioning.
If you think this film's butchering of Cruella was bad, you should see what they did to her in the god awful animated series. (Seriously, that show was fucking abysmal. Easily the worst production WDTA has ever conceived in my opinion.)
No the 1997 series was a gold mined and Cruella protray was better than the Live Action Cruella as making a dog killer sympathetic is stupid at leaste 1997 Cruella was still a villain and even still hammy
well you got that right and only 14 (besides Patch who is 15) are Pongo and Perdita's own children. the other 96? dogs are adopted

To add to Thunderbolt and Lightning, I think that the problem is that they tried to make Lightning a sympathetic villain similar to Nuka. Two problems: one, Nuka could be wacky most of the time, but he could actually be quite menacing, before he died, he went full growly voice and slasher smile and as you say Lightning wasn't menacing at all; two, both sympathetic stories told us something about Zira and Thunderbolt, but whereas Zira was a psychopath who raised her cubs in an unhealthy and emotionally abusive manner, which Nuka's insecurities adds to, Lightning's insecurities makes Thunderbolt look pretty unlikeable so it's hard to sympathise with him when he loses the show and Patch's trust.
Great review, mate, definitely agreed with the points you made (especially Horace and Jasper, I liked them for the same reason I liked the Hyenas, they were funny, but they could also be quite menacing), looking forward to the next one.

God that sequel was bad! 😡 The Hunchback of Notre Dame is my favorite Disney movie ever! Great music, great animation, great hero and heroine (Not counting those damn gargoyles -_- ), and most importantly, the BEST villain in all of Disney.

The Hey Arnold reference was at 20:16 from the episode Eugene Goes Bad. Eugene looked up to an actor that it turned out wasn't a true hero so he lost faith and decided to become bad. Later the actor realized that he let one of his biggest fans down and decided to apologize to Eugene and make it up to him by following the beliefs that his character was meant to hold.

Tbh, about the whole probation thing. I worked for the probation service for a few years in the UK.
You can be on a probation and not to done jail time! She could have got a community service order, suspended sentence, a fine, or all of the above and been required to do some probation appointments/visits. Usually it just means meeting with your probation officer and setting out agreed goals like being referred to counselling, attending said counselling, finding a job, speaking to your client to make sure you still upholding what your probation agreement is etc.
Might have been her money and influence that she just got probation.

Personally I agree more with Doug Walker on this one. It's a damn good movie and I like it MORE than the original, mainly because I find the original incredibly boring.
I’m sure everybody said this before me but yeah there was a 101 Dalemation cartoon. Hell, when I first saw this sequel I assumed it was a prequel to the show.
Boy was I technically correct.
Honestly, I think there was a hugely missed opportunity with Jasper and Horace.
Since the duo was shown to have been in jail in their introduction scene, why not give them a redemption arc? Have it to where Jasper and Horace are legitimately remorseful of their actions after spending time in jail and are essentially forced into doing another job by Cruela De Vil. And since they really don't want to live this life anymore, they won't be as sharp as they used to be and it's downright inevitable that "Wacky hijinks" would ensue.
Then once the climax starts, have the duo go "I can't do this anymore" and decide to save the dalmatians from Cruela. They'd still go to jail but this time they'd accept it, this time fully intending on keeping with the plan to go straight.
Ok, this kind of thing has been done multiple times as well, but I feel this concept would explain why the duo are no longer as ruthless and competent without completely betraying their characters. Plus, it'd be a new arc for the villains that wasn't done in the original.
Anyway those are my thoughts. This was a good review overall, definitely one I'd watch over and over again.
EDIT: Apparently, they DO repent at the very end of the movie or so I've heard. But going from these clips, it seems that Jasper and Horace just randomly quit their evil ways without any arc or anything. So I think this post still have merit.

ClassicLuigiFan also, this may seem a bit silly, but I always thought, both as a kid and now, it was fun that Nanny and Jasper and Horace had this rivalry going on between them and your idea with the arc could have been enforced with them trying to gain Nanny's trust but she keeps refusing until she finally sees that they did redeem themselves.
Also, there could have been a touching scene between the three of them when Jasper and Horace go to jail and Nanny finally forgives them.
I know the first movie acknowledges that Cruella DeVill got investigated by Scotland Yard and and they don’t find evidence against her.
Who knows maybe they found evidence at a later date and she was then convicted?
That sort of thing does happen from time to time.

Another wonderful review! Your analysis of what made Cruella such a despicable villain was spot-on, and something that I didn't realize until years after I first saw "101 Dalmatians." I remember seeing this movie years ago, and loathing it even back then. The boredom is strong with this one. I cannot wait to see what you tear apart "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame 2," especially since the original from the 90s is in my personal top 5 Disney films, though it certainly has its flaws.

There was a cartoony Saturday morning cartoon of 101 Dalmatians. It was more like the Timon and Pumbaa cartoon where it was more wacky.
So Cruella got sent to a mental institution. Does that mean that this film takes place before "102 Dalmatians"?
True, I mean in the animated version Cruella was never arrested and she and Anita were just old friends, whereas in the live action version Cruella was Anita's boss, and she was arrested at the end.

Edit because I somehow forgot. In fact cut Thunderbolt, the artist, and shift the focus to Lucky, Rolly, and made for the show Cadpig and this was the first episode. Though the moral in that was more of a “Your real home is your family” type thing.
I'm guessing from the clue, the next review is going to be the Hunchback Of Notre Dame II. We're in for a world of pain with this one.

I can't never view this the same way again. It wasn't until last year that I understood why Cruella was considered evil and as a kid the movie just confused me. I never knew you had to kill animals to get their fur. I thought she could just shave them! I'm too horrified now to watch the original. xD

Also, another continuity flaw I want to bring up: why the fuck do all of the puppies have white ears, including Lucky who distinctively had *both black ears* in the first film? You know something is wrong when even the shitty animated series gave the puppies their proper ear colors.
I've heard that the reason for this is because they wanted Patch to stand out more, but he already has a god damn spot over his right eye which is enough for him to be visually distinct, and he was already distinctive enough in the first movie, so what the hell is the point!? I know this sounds just as nitpicky as complaining about Sonic's eye color, but come on!

When talking about Patch, "That just defines what he knows not who he is." Aren't there a lot of examples of characters who would not be who they are without their knowledge and how to use it? McGuyver, the guy from Burn Notice, and lots of characters have encyclopedic knowledge of things and that's basically their thing. Yes they use that to a good end but that's basically what Patch is doing isn't it? Leading his family out of danger etc etc...
Kimo Nalu The difference is that someone like MacGyver isn't just defined by having a bunch of random knowledge, but his ability to apply said random knowledge in creative ways. It's kind of hard to get across if you haven't seen this entire movie, but Patch doesn't really apply his knowledge creatively. Unless a piece of knowledge specifically correlates with an exact situation, he doesn't know how to apply it. He's just parroting what he's seeing other people doing.
Sorry, Jesse, but I still think this is a pretty good sequel. But I respect your opinion.

Couldn't Cruella have ended up on probation for vehicular assault, property damage and wreckless driving given that car chase at the end of the first movie?
I agree on the point of forgetting Patch though. I think that if Pongo and Perdie lost any of their biological puppies, which they knew all the names of and spent lots of time with (Patch is one of them), they would figure it out almost immediately after they got on the moving van.
Maybe it's because I watched the movie way too much as a kid, but there are three other puppies you can tell apart if you pay very close attention. Lucky (in the original) looks like a clone of his dad, Penny is a clone of her mom, and Freckles has "freckle" spots on her face. Yeeeah, those are the only ones I remember (and get named) from the Pongo 15.

Pete Hill Well, it's a great mystery story, for the first part of the book. The big mystery as to why are all humans asleep and not the animals. But once the aliens show up, it raises the question as to why they couldn't just take away all of the nuclear arms at the end; in addition to that, they put the whole world to sleep?! Anyhow, I would say it's an okay story. So I would give it a worth reading.
It's honestly for the best. I haven't read it myself, but from what I've researched, it sounds like a bad Disney fanfic in spite of being written by Dodie Smith.
You bring up that Toon Studio does better with TV. This is shown in movies like Kim Possible So The Drama, Phineas and Ferb across the 2nd dimension, and Recess School's Out which I find to be so good I'd consider them as good as big named classics. Disney Toons should make movies based off of TV shows and not sequels

Probation doesn't necessarily mean someone's been in prison. It's often used as an alternative punishment to prison time. You might be thinking of parole.

You know, there is potential for a good sequel here, as the book which the original is based on had a sequel, called The Starlight Barking, so this film could've been based on that, but they didn't, so they missed a half-decent opportunity here.

I can certainly buy that, but then why do the terms of her probation have a stipulation relating to the purchase of furs?
I swear Cruella also tied that artist up bondage-style to a canvas in this movie. That was an enlightening moment in my childhood, I'll tell you that. O.o
Forgive the spamming, but I tend to find more stuff to say as I watch this. But I loved the big Jasper and Horace part. I just love how you pointed out how those guys were not the typical slap-stick goons. But they were both two dangerous criminals that any kidnapping victim would find themselves terrified being in the clutches of. I can't help but feel a bit irritated when they dismiss them as two morons. Sure they were pretty lazy when they were at Hell hall and preferred to watch TV than kill the puppies, but I don't think that was them being morons as much as it was them being human. When we've been doing a job for a certain amount of time, we do ding around and think "eh, a little distraction won't kill us". Also, they just got done kidnapping the puppies and running from the crime scene, so it's understandable that they would want a TV break. So this movie, I feel, thinks that making Jasper and Horace do hijinks was in character when it really was not. I could go on, since those guys are/were my all time favorite evil Disney henchmen, but I'll try avoid spamming anymore (but, obviously, no promises 😂😂😂)
I remember when I was little and this came out and even then, I thought it was boring. I was happy to see my old friends on a new adventure and I liked how "Londonish" (if that's a word, hence the quotes) it was. Also, I liked the London trivia game that was on the DVD... I was a pretty nerdy kid, but that's what happens when your parents are teachers 😂😂😂. But yeah, not even six year old was entertained enough by this.

As boring as this movie might have been, I still think you delivered a funny review :) As someone else pointed out there was a TV show for this film. It was cute, and you are right that this film feels like just a longer episode. I am curious, if you do a commentary for this one, what you would have done for a sequel to the original film.
This was a great come back after VEDS (which was a fun time) and I cannot wait for the next Disney Direct Dvd, but as always your other videos are also well done too. Keep up the awesome work.

I started watching your reviews and I'm liking your style so far. After the Hunchback sequel and its infamous level of god awful, would you consider Cinderella III: A Twist in Time? One of the actually, surprisingly good Disney sequels. Not meant to sound demanding.

Lars was the only good thing to come out of this movie, especially since he was voiced by Martin Short.
Um.... There was a 101 Dalmatians cartoon in the late 90's. The artstyle was different, but it did exist and I enjoyed it.

Well, for a Disney Direct-to-DVD sequel, at least it's not poorly animated?
There is that, I suppose.
The animation is pretty good in it's own right, but I personally prefer the grittier and sketchier look of the original. I also think the 2011 Winnie the Pooh film did a better job of recreating the sketchy look, but eh. Still, at least they tried to recreate the look of xerography unlike The Jungle Book 2 which ignored it entirely.
WTH did Cruella, Horace, and Jasper go to prison? There's no indication that the police picked them up after they wrecked their cars on the mountain side trying to push the moving van that Pongo, Perdy, and the puppies were riding in off the cliff.

Cruella De Vil Meet And Greet At Disneyland
I, personally, didn't think the movie was too bad. I did like some of the voices they got, Cruella is always a joy to watch, and the animation looks pretty damn fine. As for the plot, well the first movie wasn't really that much of a plot driven movie, the plot of this one is a hit or miss. There are some parts that I feel I get bored and other parts feel rushed, but it still has some heart to it that other disney sequels(direct-to-video) don't have. So this movie is not my favorite. But for me, it's alright.
I do respect your opinion though and if I didn't see this when I was a kid first, I'd probably give it something worse. :/

CodedLockFilms Sorry for asking for a review. I didn't see the video where you said not to ask for reveiws. If I saw it I wouldn't have asked. What I said was more of a suggestion just incase you haven't heard of the 3rd Aladdin movie and/or the 3rd Cinderella movie.
Aladdin and the King of Thieves is actually a very well crafted movie in my opinion. It still doesn't hold a candle to the original for sure, but it's a damn good film in it's own right (and not because Robin Williams is in it) which is far more than I can say for Disney's other DTV sequels.
I'd remembered this as one of those Good Direct-to-DVD Disney Sequels that stays true to the original movie But is it one of the Better Direct-to-DVD Disney Sequels NOT Really but's an Okay Sequel
I find it funny how I Felt more for Nuka in TLK2 than I did for Patch.
Both of them tried to prove themselves to their parents, and had similar struggles.
TLK2 is far less than TLK, but by God, if it didn't give fans stuff to work with.
I remember being disappointed by this as a kid, because 101 was my favorite movie at the time.
