    You know, that's actually a really funny idea.
    What if there was a Snow White story with a jaded, cynical mirror?
    "Really? I'm bound to tell you the truth, clear and plain, and you're wasting it on idiotic questions to keep yourself vain?"
    Then when Snow White becomes fairer, he would get all sneering and mischievous, like he's been so bored with all the same questions that once something happens to switch things up and put the "idiotic, vain queen" in her place, he's all too happy to get some revenge by telling her a truth she doesn't want to hear.
    "My lady is pleasing to see, but sorry, Snow White is fairer, farther than thee."
    And throughout the story, the Queen is coming up with plans to kill Snow White, but the mirror, tired of his potential being wasted, keeps giving the Queen half-truths just to f**k with her.
    And at the end, Snow White and the Prince use the mirror in clever ways to help the kingdom flourish, making the mirror happy that he's being useful.

    Yeah, the one positive example of a stepparent that springs to mind is Kala from Tarzan, even after Tarzan finds out who his parents and he briefly decides to leave the jungle, he tells her 'No matter where I go, you will always be my mother.' Great review as always, had a very personal consultation over anxiety and depression, so I seriously needed a few laughs. Thanks.

      If we're not limiting ourselves to just the movies, then I'd like to point out that Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck are presented as positive surrogate/adoptive parents to Huey, Dewey, and Louie Duck. Sure, when they first meet the triplets, they're a bit annoyed, but it's clear that Donald does love them and has their best interests at heart, and Scrooge soon learns that the boys are very important and dear to him.

Along with Raksha from the 2016 live-action reboot of the Jungle Book. I mean, seriously, I actually cried when she had to let Mowgli go to be stay in the man-village in that movie.

      CodedLockFilms But can we get straight the fact that all the evil stepparents come from the fact that it's in the original tale that is being adapted? So it's not Disney pushing it at all. If anyone it's the Grimm's.

    • @DemonFoxAkira
      @DemonFoxAkira 6 років тому +3

      Not so much the "evil stepmother" trope as the "wicked old witch" trope which is more in line with the Rapunzel story Tangled is based on as both women (Gothel from Tangled and the witch from the original) take the kid against the wishes of the birth parents like the baby was no more than a trinket, the girl hidden away from the world for the witch's selfish ends while pretty much trained to look upon her kidnapper as a caring mama figure her entire childhood, and the heroine has to deal with a supposedly loving caretaker turned angry hag once the love interest is discovered. There was no marriage for money or stature, no death of the male bio parent, and no competition with the step-daughter. Just one crazy chick who steals a kid, claims it as her own and raises hell if anyone else enters the picture. It's easy to mistake one for the other. Both are similar and plenty in old stories with good people defeating bad people through luck and merit. It just takes further dissection of plot and character for context while drawing similarities to the original source material.
      And Val and Brit are correct: while Disney did put these out in movies, the material that the "re-imagined" flicks are heavily based on are from a compilation of the Grimm prose. The Mouse House may be displaying the trope on the big screen but it's not really their idea. The trope is centuries old and well-known as a result of the stories being told by each subsequent generation to the current day so it's going to be expected to appear as part of the plot. Granted, the more grizzly aspects of the originals have been omitted to make it more kid-friendly, but the ancient bones are still there.

    Re: "Tangled" - Mother Gothel wasn't a step-parent, she was a KIDNAPPER. Also, in fairness to Disney, a lot of these ideas are from the original stories. But yeah, if you're an orphan living in a Disney universe, you'd better hope to be adopted by animals. They generally have a better track record as surrogate parents than the humans.

    • @petehill7280
      @petehill7280 8 років тому +4

      The Brothers Grimm are originally responsible for the idea of evil stepmothers, as they bowdlerised their tales somewhat to make them more child-friendly, i.e. the removal of almost all sexual elements, and the changing of evil birth mothers to evil stepmothers, as well as removing some of the more violent tales from later editions, such as "How Children Played At Slaughtering".

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  8 років тому +5

      It's true that Mother Gothel was a kidnapper, but she still fulfills the role of "evil surrogate parent" within the narrative, whether legal or not. And yeah, these ideas come from the original stories, but the beauty of adaptation is that you're perfectly within your rights to change stuff that doesn't work or is problematic if you want to, and Disney, for a long time, didn't.
      I'm not even saying that this tendency is absolute. Look at Kala from Tarzan (more demonstration that you're better off with animals, really). And yeah, they've been getting better over time.
      None of this is to say that I don't love classic Disney. I wouldn't be dedicating a portion of my life to analyzing this kind of stuff if I didn't.

      @petehill7280 8 років тому +1

    • @animagusurreal
      @animagusurreal 8 років тому +3

      CodedLockFilms I think there are a couple reasons Disney stuck with the evil-step-parent trope for so long: 1) The same reason they make the birth parents dead or absent - making the surrogate parent evil means that the main character is truly on their own (well, besides comic relief animals and fairy godparents). 2) It puts the villain in a position of authority over the main character, creating conflict. The line in this movie is a nice gesture, but they still depict the step-parent as being evil. A recent Disney example (albeit from TV) of showing, and not just telling, that step-family members can be just as close as birth-family members is "Phineas and Ferb". Then, there are the TV-movie sequels to the original "Parent Trap", which depict *both* of the twins as divorcees who happily remarry and become step-parents themselves. I also like how "Frozen" featured parents who were not evil, but were misguided in how they handled the situation. (And then courteously died so that the plot could happen...)
      Don't worry, I never questioned your love of classic Disney :).

    • @kylemorello4787
      @kylemorello4787 4 роки тому

      Don't forget about TV! Phineas, Ferb, and Candace are step-siblings, and they make an amazing team (even if Candace has a busting problem with them). Drake Mallard/Darkwing Duck has a beautiful relationship with Gozalyn, (both versions, heh) even though he's an adoptive Dad. And Sofia the First is partially about a young girl learning how to be a part of a stepfamily with a completely different lifestyle, going so far as to provide commentary on this infamous trope in the first episode!
      And if you want to get REALLY technically, isn't The Tigger Movie and a decent amount of Muppet, Toy Story (Woody practically became the older brother to both Buzz and Jessie around the 3rd film), and MCU productions (especially the Guardians of the Galaxy) about finding family in the most unlikely of places?
      I'm sorry if I'm getting way to technical.

    Actually, this is more accurate to the original fairytale than the Disney version.
    For example in the original version the evil queen tries different ways to kill Snow White. First she uses a band around her neck and than a poisoned comb but she survives both thanks to the dwarves. The apple is her third attempt to kill her and this time it works because the dwarves this time don't find the cause of her dropping dead (the piece of apple stuck in her throat).
    In the original fairytail she isn't also kissed back to life. The piece of apple really does fall out of her mouth when the princes guards drop her coffin.
    So, yes. It is really sad to say but this represents the original tale better than Disneys.

      That's the NICE version! In one version, he keeps her dead body and refers to her as 'the doll', and has her dressed up and propped up and all that creepy stuff. He goes off on a hunting trip/crusade/some such for a while, ordering his mother and servants to look after 'the doll', who as far as they know is actually a doll and not a real (dead) person. They pretty much just leave her in her coffin because THIS IS CREEPY I AIN'T TOUCHING IT THE PRINCE HAS A SEX DOLL, but when they hear he's on his way home, they realize they're screwed because the prince is nutso-bonkers and the doll's dress is all worn out and tattered and she's got fly crap on her from nobody cleaning her or changing her clothes. They try to clean her up really fast, but while they're trying to wash her the apple bit falls from her mouth and she wakes up, much to the shock of the queen and the servants.
      The queen now realizes that this is a real person and has been all along holy crap, and also her son may or may not have KIDNAPPED her and was definitely being a total creep to her while she was dead, so she tries to hide Snow White (who for some reason is still being referred to as 'the doll' in the story), which I imagine is to help Snow White escape and get back to her real life and not being kept as a sex doll by a weirdo prince, and when the prince gets home, she tells him that the doll was rotting and smelled so bad they had to bury it. He becomes enraged and starts demanding that the servants be killed and all that, and in order to stop a bunch of innocent servants from being murdered, the queen reveals Snow White to him. He of course marries her and I imagine the queen introduces Snow to heavy drinking to cope with her creeptastic mess of a husband she's now stuck with.

A lot of Golden Films / GoodTimes Entertainment movies have pieces of their most popular adaptations of the stories they were making ... On Disney's "Snow White" - I agree that by modern standards, there is a lot of filler (or "business" as they used to call it). However, I think the real plot of that version is about Grumpy learning to overcome his backward, hateful attitude towards women. Some of that business (like the bathtub scene you showed) ties into that. Now, HOW he learns to overcome it is by having a woman cook and clean for him...but it was 1937, that's still a...*relatively* progressive story for the time.

      @@PrincessofEllabur Naaaaht necessarily - queens who kept the throne themselves after their husband died without remarrying were pretty rare. Usually if the king died, if there was no male heir, the kingdom would go to the closest male relative, or be taken over by someone totally unrelated, especially if the kingdom was in any way desireable, like having good resources or wealth. It was extremely rare for a queen to be able to hold on to the kingdom in her own right up until what we know of the English monarchy. It would be entirely possible that if the Prince, then king, died, and they had no son, she'd end up basically booted out by the new royalty who took over and might retain a sense of nobility or some money, but not her title or true power.
      An older woman with two daughters, no sons, and a dead husband? Could totally have been a queen at one point who simply lost power when she lost her husband. ESPECIALLY if she was old enough (and unattractive enough at that point) that she wouldn't be expected to be able to produce healthy heirs for a new king, so she'd be entirely removed from power rather than whoever wanted the throne simply marrying her.

    You probably already are aware of this, but for anyone else reading the comments, the whole stepmother thing was something that Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm edited to their collections. It's especially noticeable where the first edition of the Brothers' Grimm stories where all those stepmothers in the tales were actually just the girls' plain old mothers.
    Why did the Brothers Grimm went back and edited all those mothers into stepmothers? Well, they didn't realize that their book, which they had published for academic study was being bought by the newly emerging middle class families and being read to their children. In the first edition they were simply collecting the stories as a collection of peasant and folk tales for the sake of preservation and historical study (peasant culture was seen as vanishing at the time, and the Brothers Grimm were trying to rush and write down the stories before a lot of old storytellers died off). Additionally, the middle class had comprised in it a lot of former peasants who had a bit of nostalgia for the peasant culture of old, and thus were buying the books to preserve that tie to the old stories that they heard growing up.
    The Brothers Grimm thought that since culture had changed to respect and value motherhood so much, that children might be troubled hearing stories where mothers were nearly always portrayed as the villains. They figured the distance of making the mother a step-parent might soften the emotional blow, so to speak.
    Disney just translated what was the most popular version of the fairy tales, which is always what they do when adapting fairy tales.

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  8 років тому

      It's not always what they do. They're not translating, they're adapting. Translating implies that they're just creating a visual version of a written story with no significant changes. But there are plenty of changes that they make, which makes their movies adaptations. And the nice thing about adaptation is that you can change stuff that's problematic or doesn't work.
      They do so, even in Snow White. They cut down the "queen tricking Snow" stuff into just the apple, for instance. And I'll give them points for it. I'll also give them points for pretty much everything they do with the dwarves. All very entertaining. But I'll also take off points for choosing to perpetuate a non-biological parental stigma. Doesn't matter if it came from someone else, they're still perpetuating it.

    • @Salamon2
      @Salamon2 8 років тому

      CodedLockFilms To be honest, I don't view it so much as a stigma as it was an attempt by the Brothers Grimm to solve what they perceived to be a moral quandary as quickly and easily as possible, which is more my opinion on the matter, than trying to "let Disney off the hook". The Brothers Grimm bring far more morality to the stories than were originally intended, which has altered expectations of them.
      As for the step family stigma, that's a decidedly a more noble class stigma that is understandable in its context and world where marriage was about property, not love, which is probably why no one objected to such a change from mother to stepmother.
      Step-parents being reappreciated is a much more modern set of values change that come from the post-1960s and 1970s divorce epidemic which created a larger swath of step-parents than had arguably existed in human history before (not that step parents didn't exist before, just not in such large quantities at one time). And you don't even see the beginnings of a questioning of these portrayals of step family relationships seriously begin to enter the cultural mindset until the 1990s. The first big film to do so in a serious manner that comes to my mind is a Julia Roberts film, the title of which I cannot remember for the life of me. Labyrinth from the 1980s tosses out one line from the film's stepmother but then we never see the character again, so I'd count it more as a sign that the values had changed, but the ability to articulate that change had yet to be discovered.
      As such the issue of step family relations has become more of an issue as there's more step parents or people who've had step parents alive now than before in our culture. As a side note, Snow White: A Tale of Terror (which came out in the late 1990s) actually plays up the step parent relationship as having a far more important role to the story to drive the Queen towards being evil, for instance, which is greatly effective. However, is it time to do what the Grimms did and re-label the villains once again in society?
      Personally I think the Grimms erred in their editing and shouldn't have done so in the first place. Does that mean that I hate mothers? No. I simply think that trying to not offend anybody by altering what you call a villain inherently makes a bigger problem than the one you solved. Either appreciate the stories as they are, or retell them from the ground up (like an actual full-blown adaptation, like Snow White: A Tale of Terror), don't half-ass it.
      When approaching any kind of adaptation, one must ask the question of if the change that's being implemented will improve the story in any fashion, especially when it's a medium change. Repetition in an oral tale such as folk tales helps the storyteller to remember the story, so the three attempts by the Queen to kill Snow White works as a pneumonic device of sorts when telling the story orally, but translating it to the silver screen, obviously doesn't work unless you invest it. Snow White: A Tale of Terror, manages to make it work because again they focused on developing the relationship between the Queen and Snow White to a far more personal level, so each attempt to murder Snow White in that film becomes a bit more "personal" and is portrayed as a "let's up the stakes" kind of moment (an opportunity I think this animated film misses). Does it make Snow White seem a little daft? Sure, but at the same time the gifts aren't arriving in the same manner each time, and it does help lend evidence to the dwarfs of why Snow White needs to be kept hidden in the first place. So while an argument can be made for dropping the three attempts on Snow White's life, it's ultimately up to how you employ them. If you're going to invest all the drama into the apple eating, dropping the poisoned comb and the ever tightening corset makes sense. It also makes sense if you're trying to keep the film within a budget and it's an experimental film that you're not sure whether it is going to succeed or ruin your company and put you out of business (Disney). So some changes can be seen as a "it depends what you do with them".
      As for the Brothers Grimm and their changes to the fairy tales, I have a much lower opinion of their capabilities, and a great example is further down below. However, essentially rewriting every reference to a villainous mother into a step-mother creates more issues than it solves (though of course the Grimms likely didn't see it that way), and is a lazy attempt at trying to have one's cake and eat it as well. I'd much rather read the stories as they were originally intended to be told orally to my own children than read a poorly edited version with someone else's morality imposed upon it for me and my child. Further, I'd explain to my kid that the stories were collected for a different time, when people believed different things, but just because people were different then, doesn't mean that they're not good stories now.
      As for the changes by the Brothers Grimm, I personally didn't find out until I read the annotations of the complete collection of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales where in the back they list every change that was made to each story for those who are curious (and provide the original text in the back as well). For instance, the motives in the edits become extremely clear when the fact that Rapunzel gets thrown out of the tower by getting pregnant and doesn't know what pregnancy is as she asks the fairy why her dress doesn't fit right anymore, makes far more sense story-wise, and it also added a bit of naughty social commentary to the story as to what not telling one's daughter about sex can lead to as a situation, perhaps a bit of a jib at overprotective parenting by overly moral parents (supposition, I know, but seriously the story is so much better that way than the edited version). The change that the Brothers Grimm made was actually rather lame in comparison--Rapunzel gets caught because while not thinking of it, asks the fairy why she's so heavy in comparison to the prince.
      That's just one example of how adaptation when done so for morality's sake rather than for storytelling's sake can be a horrible choice (a point we agree upon). As such, given what versions became popular in the first place, I'm not surprised the Disney company did what it did and just went with what was known. Disney as a company was always a far more technological and artistically focused company than it was concerned about story (well at least while Walt was alive). But even so, Disney still tends to foot drag on social issues in their stories, usually being among the last to accept a new social norm despite the company's shift in focus.
      All that being said, give them another five years or so and the comments you like so much in this film will be in a Disney Princess film most likely.
      Thanks for prodding the discussion, by the way, this was enjoyable.

    Nice review man!
    And join the club. I don't really care for Snow White either. I respect it for being Disney's first full-length animated movie, but it really hasn't aged well over the years. The Dwarfs were kinda fun, and I do like the animation. But Snow White isn't very interesting, I wasn't really a huge fan of her singing, it lacks a story, and I agree while the filler is well crafted and entertaining, it's still filler.

    Great review and a pleasure to watch! I appreciate the time you took to talk about the step parent line. It was not something I picked up on when I was younger and first watched this movie, but as you said is an important commentary on the fairytale story.
    I agree with you about the evil queen's plans to kill Snow White not being very logical or well thought out. One thing that I do enjoy about this movie is how it adheres a little more closely to the original Grimm's fairy tale. In that one the queen attempts to kill Snow White 3 times in similar ways. The end is a little different but just as metal. Give me Grimm's Fairy Tale the queen is invited to the wedding not knowing it's Snow White's. She is given shoes full of hot coals and is forced to dance in them until she drops dead.

    I don’t think Tangled really counts as a Stepmother and she did care for Rapunzel’s basic needs, as well as education. It’s even referenced that she supplies expensive paint because Rapunzel enjoys it. She’s a kidnapper 😂 if Flynn hadn’t busted in there, Rapunzel would’ve continued life disappointed about the lanterns but with no inkling Mother Gothel wasn’t her birth mother.
    I’ll give you Enchanted though. That wasn’t too far in the past.

    The "evil stepmother" trope comes from the original fairy tales that Disney adapted their stories from, not Disney themselves. If you want someone to blame for that trope, blame the original fairy tale writers.

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  8 років тому +1

      As I've been saying in several other conversations in the comments, the great thing about adaptation is that you're perfectly free to change stuff that doesn't work. Disney is under no obligation to adhere to and further popularize the "evil stepmother" trope, but they chose to do so regardless.
      If a whole room full of people punched you in the face one after the other, you could certainly say that the first person who punched you was the one who started it and deserved the most blame. But that doesn't mean you won't still be mad at the other people.

    • @Tea_Noire
      @Tea_Noire 8 років тому +3

      +CodedLockFilms Um, not to be impolite or anything, but wouldn't changing, altering, or even removing the evil stepmother as a villain change the entire fairy tale as a whole? If the Evil Queen and Lady Tremaine were changed to become nicer or even removed entirely, there would be no conflict in the entire storyline. I mean, both princesses are supposed to be the "strong in the face of adversity" types. If there's no adversity, what's the point? I understand that stepmothers are portrayed negatively in fiction, but that's just it: it's fiction. It doesn't really matter how they're shown, because at the end of the day, the evil stepmother isn't real and everyone should be able to discern reality from make-believe.

    • @53subscribersnovideos35
      @53subscribersnovideos35 8 років тому +1

      Actually, Snow White's stepmother was originally he biological mother, and it was adapted into stepmother because they didn't want people to associate biological mothers with child-hating.

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  8 років тому +2

      Yes, Buizelstar, it would change the fairy tale, but there are plenty of ways to maintain that conflict. Jafar is a good example of how to do this sort of thing. It'd have been very easy to have replaced Jafar with "the Sultan's new wife" or something of the sort, who wants Aladdin out of the picture so that Jasmine doesn't get married and assume the throne. Removing one conflict just means you have to replace it with another, not that that conflict is gone entirely.
      And as for it not mattering because it's fiction, the simple fact of the matter is that the fiction we consume has a tremendous impact on our personalities and the way we see the world, especially the fiction we consume as children. Harry Potter is fiction, and it had a tremendous impact on me as a child. It did a lot to influence my personality and my sense of right and wrong. Same can be said for all the Spider-Man comics I read when I was a kid, and all the musicals I saw. The things we watch have an effect on us, especially when we tell ourselves that they don't affect us and just passively absorb without thinking critically about them.

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  8 років тому +2

      I know that she was originally the biological mother, Shauna. That's kind of my point, though. A stepmother is just as much a real mother as a biological one, and the idea that it's better to have a stepmother be hateful simply because of the fact that she's not the birth parent is the whole problem.

    Every time I see a new review from you, I absolutely click it and watch all the way, other habits be DAMMNED (....well ok, if I have to go to work, then I pause it but the point still stands!).
    I'm really loving the thumbnail posters for your reviews. Do you do them yourself? If so, well done!
    You're "pep-talk" with the stepmother who kept failing to kill Snow White was a complete delight, I could listen to that level of deadpan snark all day. Seriously though, no WONDER she sent a hitman after snow the first time.
    Something interesting about the Rapey the Clown (Why yes, that IS what I'm going to call this prince character from now on) that I've noticed. After re-watching the cinderella review it seems that Rapey not only has a similar facial structure to that prince but (and this could just be me) it sounds like he's voiced by the same actor! Now all we need is some wacky theory that says they're the same person.
    And yes, I too really enjoy the more self aware aspects of this short. It's like they were the remains of an earlier draft written by a man who had just finished an MST3K marathon, it's great!
    Overall, this was one hell of an enjoyable review! It may have been a while but damn was it ever worth the wait!

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  8 років тому +1

      I do the thumbnails myself, yes. Thank you!
      And yes, Goodtime Entertainment uses a lot of the same voice actors in multiple movies. It's a function of the low-budget nature of these things; the creators have to take a lot of shortcuts. That's also why a lot of their characters look so similar (especially how all the dwarves are identical except for the color of their clothes); it's less money that they have to spend on character design. Similarly, it's why some aspects of the script feel like they were written by different people: It's because they probably were, and there wasn't room in the budget for a script supervisor to go over the script several times to make everything feel unified. That's how a line like "A stepmother's love can be as deep and pure as any mother's" ends up in the same movie as "lotions and potions." All comes down to budget.
      Glad you enjoyed the video!

    Actually many of the parts that dont make sense - like the comb and the servants being the ones reviving Snow White - are pretty much like that in the original Grimm fairytale. I feel like they tried to make a pretty faithful adaptation and this is why they kept parts that, in all honesty, didnt make much sense in the original story either.

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  7 років тому +1

      I'm aware of that, but I have a policy of not judging a story by faithfulness to source material. Quality is what matters to me, and to me, if something doesn't make sense in the source material, you should fix it.

    • @theredone222
      @theredone222 7 років тому

      CodedLockFilms Oh I didnt mean to critisize your review with that. I like that you pointed out that those parts are kind of weird.
      I just tried to find some kind of explanation, that's all.
      Anyway, I really liked your review. Keep up the good work. :)

    • @CodedLockFilms
      @CodedLockFilms  7 років тому +1

      Oh, no offense taken. The point you've made is one I'm used to addressing. And there's nothing wrong with taking faithfulness into account, but I tend to apply faithfulness to the source material to broad things.
      Example: The second Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie takes some inspiration from the classic "Spider-Man No More" story arc from the comic. Overall the events are completely different, but the movie does a really good job of capturing the feeling of the arc despite that.
      And that's not even to say that being faithful to the essence of a story in adaptation is all that important, objectively speaking, especially when the original story is kind of problematic. I often don't see the point of adapting something if you're not going to try and do anything different. Sometimes you do something better, sometimes you don't. The movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" tells a better story than the book it comes from, the Harry Potter books are better than their movie adaptations. Just kinda depends on what works out.
      But anyway. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

    Well, to be fair, in some of the earliest version of Snow White the queen actually did give her a comb first, enchanted to get stuck in her skull when she used it, and then a corset enchanted to become to tight to stop her breath, and lastly an apple which the first bite got stuck in her throat, choking her. When the prince found her he ordered his servants to carry the glass coffin to his castle, but one of them dropped it, causing Snow White to cough up the apple bite and wake up.

    This was an awesome review.You brought up some very valid points and I also enjoy how aware this movie is of itself at times while failing at others. Keep up the great work :)
    If you enjoyed the mirror from this one and you have not seen it then I suggest you watch the Fearie Tale Theater one where the mirror is played by Vincent Price. His interactions with the queen are, in my opinion, very funny and the ending with the mirrors is pretty cool justice like in this one.
    All of these are just suggestions, but I think you would enjoy them. If you did enjoy them enough for a review that would just be awesome.
    And I would just offer the Fearie Tale theater show in general. It was done in the 80s so the effects don't always hold up, but the stories themselves are told fairly well. Check it out if you want more Fairy Tale movies it had a total of 26 episodes which can be found on youtube. Off the top of my head that Disney also did was Snow White, Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the beast, and Aladdin. If you have not been able to find more movies to add to the Disney rip off collection then maybe these will do ore you could just review these on their own merits which no one has done on youtube before.
    Also if you want another one to compare to the Little Mermaid check on e the anime one which came out in 1975 I believe which actually as I;m thinking about it it maybe the reverse that Disney ripped that one off in some areas which would be interesting to note.
    And I would check out the 1976 TV movie Beauty and the beast with George C Scott which again may have given Disney a few ideas on their version while giving its own spin on the story. None of these have reviews on them.
    If you want more corny fairy tales I would also look into the Cannon Movie Tales Beauty and the beast, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty. They are all live action musicals, your friend Matt looked at the Beauty and the Beast one already.

    Speaking of "Snow White", will you please review "Happily Ever After"? It's the unofficial sequel to the Disney film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". It was released the same summer the Disney version was re-released in theaters for the last time.

    My country's national network didn't have money to buy the classic disney movies, so I had no choice but to watch these cheesy rip-offs. Oh those were the times.

    I give them credit for that, and for the step mother stuff...

    9:33 I don't think Disney has tried to push the message that only biological parents can take care of children, it is simply the way stepparents are portrayed in their source material from which these movies are made. There's some Disney adaptations where they show the contrary, as in "The Rescuers", where Penny the orphaned girl longs and is finally adopted by a good couple; and in "Meet the Robinsons", when Lewis, another orphaned child who spends the majority of the film trying to find his biological mother, realises that he has a happier future ahead with an adoptive family.
