(Let me know if I missed anyone's credits or if you have a preferred credit!)
This is why I don't care if people are "heavily inspired" by art styles or get caught copying stock photos; it's somewhat necessary if you don't know how to freehand things from references alone. Figure tracing from photography is actually really good to learn how motion and dynamic poses work! That's what Im doing right now actually lol
I'm doing that as well
Haaaa, I did tell you earlier that I'd ban you if you kept bothering other commenters did I not? Welp, welcome to ban town. Told you that you could post whatever dumb nonsense you wanted on my video but not to bother other viewers, could have just behaved but alas. Bye.

@@MaliMalware My heart dropped for a second before I realized you were talking about someone else lol
Op! I’m sorry for those few seconds you were spooked! Don’t worry you’re a darling ✨
As a learning tool for sure! It’s only bad when someone traces art to end up trying to sell it or enter a contest. As long as you give credit as well! Otherwise it’s not that bad.
Poo poo pee pee
I’d consider myself a seasoned artist, and thankfully I never got caught up in the internet art space’s weird backwards rule set that kids like to swear up and down on. That said, I kinda forgot how important tracing for practice actually was, so thanks for the indirect reminder for me to get down in the trenches and start doing that again!
Tracing was how I learned how to draw, when I was young we only had one computer for the whole family and my way of saving cool images was by tracing them on copy-paper (still have them saves time this very day). And as I sometimes struggle to come up with good poses for my characters, tracing has been unbelievably helpful. As long as you give proper credit, I do think that it is a fantastic tool for inexperienced artist.
Tracing is good to learn and get a handle on style or anatomy. Its good for artists to trace over photos to understand poses better, to see how the body changes when looked at from different perspective.
Theres so many accounts (especially on deviantart) where people make photo references for that reason for artists to work with. I use them often to study. Athough it needs to be said that if you're going to post your art that used those photos as reference, then you should check whenever the photo creator wishes to be credited and/or be informed that you used their photo as an art reference.
But yeah art tracing is good for learning and we should shame artists for doing that as an art practice. The only time its not okay is when its obvious tracing on a commisioned piece, that was also traced from others artists piece and a person is pretending its not/claiming its fully original.
I propose the term for ethical tracing be "Emulatory Training"
In animation, and also in old school comics, it was ESENTIAL, for DOZENS TO HUNDREDS to clone the same art style. Imagine say bugs bunny looking like a different art style every frame. Also traced movement keeps the movement consistent. Not doing that turns the animation into an unwatchable chatic mess. Especially pre computer. In old comics prior to the mid 80s, they used a " house style" to make consistent looking art. With that in mind, the better studios like Disney, ( when Walt was alive) also worked hard to make sure the artists own style and general artistic and creative skills were also maintain ed because they would be able to create better designs and even story ideas if that was done, plus it helped aliviate burn out, at least for lead and key employees.
As an older artist, I'm really glad to see you making posts (on tumblr) and a video like this! Tracing as a technique for learning got such a bad rap, but it's really a very good way to learn to "see" things and also to train muscle memory.
I'll be Real Old for a moment and say that I think the bad rap it got is just the result of the development of the internet, and the degree to which the internet allowed people access to a huge amount of artwork; but at the same time, people didn't all get trained to the same degree about how to present their art online and how to give credit, etc. The "tracing is stealing" problem arose with some people, yes, actually tracing with intent to steal (/plagiarize / pass off others' art as their own), but with others just not thinking to give credit for various reasons, resulting in them looking like they were trying to steal without their meaning to.
The way you're using it is a really useful way to use it, AND you're modeling good practices on how to be transparent about what you're doing, and why.
(I do think that another misconception that became common is the notion that you must present a Finished Work and you "don't" want people to know the process behind it. That's how "using references" also became prone to misconceptions. It's nice to see people pushing back against that, as time has gone on, and become more willing to share the process as well as the end result.)
Tbh I used to be embarrassed of doing it, but I was very young and learning to draw. I honestly don’t think it’s that bad on specific circumstances
It’s nice to trace if it helps but some don’t really like people tracing them. As long as the artist is fine with it (or you just map out the shapes) it’s chill. That’s how I look at it though lol
My view tends to be that if there's an artist you'd like to learn from by tracing, but you know they'd prefer you not publicly post the results, then you respect that. But it does seem like that's mostly what those artists don't want -- people publicly posting tracings. You really can do whatever you want in private, as practice.
(Although, when it comes to personal art styles -- as opposed to show or movie art styles -- of course it's also a good idea to "trace to learn" but NOT try to draw in a similar style to that other artist's personal style. Which is probably another reason individual artists would prefer people not trace their work to learn. Distinctly personal art styles are something that evolves over time and that also can become an artist's "brand", so it makes sense that if they rely on their style/brand, they'd like budding artists to NOT mimic their style. But I think, if you bear this in mind, you can still learn from them, while being careful that what you learn isn't "to mimic their style".)
16:30 is my child. he looks amazing!💞💞 I'm happy you used the teenagers as a reference for him since he's 19.
I needed this, cause I need to trace poses or else I'll only draw people just standing there.
@IsaacInfernape2000 wait klonoafan2012s comment is gone/hidden, what did it say?
@IsaacInfernape2000 thaaaats not likely what he said lol
i know almost all of his comments are a form of like "ok tr@nsphobic" or "ok fake *insert gender identity or s3xuality here" so its likely one of the two
Yeah just gonna chime in real quick. They were calling multiple people in the comments fake trans or accusing them of various ‘isms’ I gave them a warning about it, they didn’t heed it and now they’re banned from commenting.
But yes, @spacething7474 is correct. The comment was likely just calling others fake artists and the usual nonsense.
Hope that clears things up.
I can't even trace, my hands just cannot cooperate when I try to draw, but I do play music and the music world's been shaken with more than one lawsuit over some artist using a chord progression that sounds similar to something in an existing song, but the thing about music, as well as all other art is, you can't copyright harmony. As long as the new piece is distinct and it's own thing, taking inspiration is not just okay, it's the norm. As far as tracing, or for music playing covers, goes, it's a good start when learning the skills required to create your preferred form of art. You CAN learn an instrument from just fiddling, but playing covers builds muscle memory much quicker, teaching your hands where to be and how to move for your music to sound good. Art is a major part of culture and like anything else related to culture, is very heavily influenced by other factors in your life and if you get defensive over your art, what you're really doing is just making sure it won't be a part of the "cultural canon" in your community, since everyone who admires you and wishes to integrate parts of your style into theirs will just be afraid of backlash and will draw their inspirations from elsewhere.
sometimes i look back to when i was tracing when i was 5 i stopped due to the internet but i'm 15 now and tracing again so i can learn to draw better
I love when my favorite youtubers make a hot take on topics lmao
The only art I trace, is my own art xD I'm a traditional artist, and I avoid having to worry about eraser lines that way.
But one thing I'm weardly good at, is copying art. (Putting the picture besides me on my phone, and trying to redraw it as acurately as possible.) To the point where I wouldn't be suprised of getting acused for tracing one day, even when I specifically spell out that I didn't trace it, but copied it by drawing it by hand
Love this video! Seeing how you went from point A to point, like, E was great and really heartening!
I really had to get over the OMG SO NOT ALLOWED aspect of this. I'm an older woman and it took me forever to learn that it's a great tool for learning. I also will copy drawings people do that I like - especially if it's something I particularly struggle with. It allows me to discover how to do it and the shapes needed and I improve at that. But I still have the kind of guilty feeling. But I just started doing it on my own. I only share a tiny bit of those I've drawn on my own and do my best to credit the original artists, like a draw this in your style type thing. But I also trace sometimes to practice coloring techniques because I am still attempting to make digital art look not horrible :(
As long as credit is given, I think all of us artists should help each other, learn from one another and bolster our community.
I feel like being against tracing is low-key ableist as much as I hate that word. Referencing requires you to be capable of having spatial reasoning and a fair amount of mental disorders prevents your brain to have proper spatial reasoning. Tracing relies more or less on muscle memory which is something that even those with mental disorders can do.
Bestie Ash in this video lets fucking gooooo lads
as someone who cant do anatomy yeah , tracing helps , but always always make sure you have permision to use the base/reference
I'm friends with artbreaker! They're actually really cool! :)
I feel like you can trace for practice or mash peoples styles for yourself. that isn't bad but some people confuse
using tracing to learn and using tracing to steal I think its funny people get mad at others for using art styles for practice 💀 its funny to me .
Nice vid! Its true tracing can help alot with learning how to draw and learning that everything in the end is shapes and help people get inspired with developing their art style by being inspired by others. I myself am heavily influenced by a few big artists and hope to honor their style within mine while developing my own. Artists do need to learn when to not straight up tracing without crediting though which is where so many get confused it seems - or just straight up lie and don't.
YES thanks for saying this!! I never rrly traced bc I was worried it was stealing, and while I’m not actively trying to learn another style this moment, I’m slowly starting to roll into that way. Starting with edits on my part, and I make sure to always be honest I traced and show the original
Mal I'm curious about your opinion on this, but for artists with aphantasia who can't really get past needing a reference due to not being able to picture images in their own head in order to get to the free form stage. I typically take my own photos for pose references, but still feel bad because I've been taught that it's still technically "cheating" to heavily reference poses especially if the pose looks to close to a pose in someone else's work, which is frustrating as the body only moves in so many ways. OTL
It is absolutely NOT cheating! Reference is the life blood of all art, from classical to Disney animation and rotoscoping, reference and tracing is a huge part of art!
The only reason sometimes photos being used for reference can be dicey is if the images don't belong to you. As in you're using a photographers/models work for your own. But if you're taking your own images for reference then there's absolutely no reason to feel nervous about it!
People that say reference is cheating as insane and wrong and usually pretty petty or young. Ignore them and create to your hearts content!
My pearls have been clutched!!!
dude i'd be honored if someone traced my art; thats fucking rad
its like wearing the same shirt, a dude saw you hanging out in one and went "yo fucking dope"
i used to trace all the time as a teen, so it's kinda natural. that's what growing up and learning is for! i believe tracing screenshots for fun is fine so long as you credit the original media, tracing for practice is fine so long as you don't post it, and tracing screenshots to learn the style like u did is fine! i love tracing sonic x screenshots and making them into speedpaints 🤘 awesome art and video!! 💝
I agree that it's not bad to trace when its utilize as a learning tool. An artist has to start somewhere (first time or studying styles, etc), a logical start is to trace characters from shows to figure out 'how' to draw form, style etc. I can only assume that many artist, including myself, didn't have anyone to look to for learning (no skilled shared or online tutorials back in the day). So you utilize what you can on hand, but be mindful that it's a learning tool and should be stated when in use.
the only reason I don't want people tracing my art is bc they're gonna learn something wrong. and i don't want people learning things wrong from me.
Neat
I don’t wanna be tracer.
Nonnegotiable. Welcome to being a tracer.
@@MaliMalware ....next time you do one of these, I'm sending you a mech or an 80's cartoon character to translate. Just to make you SUFFER.
Haiii I love your art! :3
yes! finally someone says it!
Oh hey that's my zombie over there !! You did a great job ;0 I'm also a ✨tracer✨ for learning purposes and honestly it's nice to see that the overall opinion on tracing these days isn't as harsh and damning as it used to be back when I was a beginner artist on the internet aha (I'm also a simp for Stan,,, do you mind sharing?)
Stan needs all the simps he can get. He needs affection dang it!
@@klonoafan2012 aw cry about it
@@klonoafan2012 and I'll say this because you have 2012 in your username so I can only assume that you're a 10 year old and therefore... Uneducated. But tracing is a *tool* for *studying*. I went to college for the fine arts and was instructed to trace *all the time* for studies and assignments. Many artists in the industry and online community trace for learning purposes and I highly doubt any of them are going to stop because an ignorant 10 year old on the internet said they're fake artists. I don't trace for my social media posts or commissions because that's where you get into theft territory. Watch the video and you may have heard that. Go do your homework.
@@klonoafan2012 I'm nonbinary, art is my career, and I'm fully vaxxed and wearing a mask right now actually ! Nice try though
@klonoafan2012 you can comment all the nonsense you want on my vid, I don’t really care, but if you start harassing other commenters like this I’m just gonna ban you from commenting. Knock it off.
Just stumbled across you & gotta say you look like the human version of kirby slay lol
I just have a single folder in my drawing program where I trace things. I use it for practice only, and nobody else sees it.
It says JynxtheJInx doesn't exist no more
One of the problems with AI drawings is that it is difficult to prove or disprove whether the AI model was trained on someone else's art without consent. The people who train the AI can add your art to the source art set, and you would never know for sure, unless you break into their computer room and look through their files; and even then they might have already deleted the source files
I guess everyone agrees with this opinion becyase i can definitely not see the dislikes.
Dont show her ragen from Mob Psycho 100 🤣
que people in the comments just repeating points you made as if they hadn't already been mentioned in the video and somehow contradict the vid or that it hadn't been mentioned😂
Wow I did not know this, I am just now allowing myself reference photos recently to help draw (after over a decade of drawing) and it has helped SO much. I still feel kind of guilty some times. I feel like it’s cheating or something!! (Because I didn’t “create” the image from my mind) So i could not even imagine tracing 😭😭😭 oh my. Even as just practice I would feel so guilty. I wish I could do this!!
