Yep. I'm betting that if the rail got fed into the shredder enough times, the smaller surviving chunk of rail would eventually reach a stalemate with the shredder because the teeth would be too wrecked to do any further damage. It wouldn't be worth it to take it that far.

Even this mighty shredder has its limits. In July I saw the magnificent "Big Boy 4014" locomotive here in Roseville Calif. It sat on tracks for 2 1/2 days. It weighs 1.2 MILLION pounds. Imagine the strength of the steel tracks to hold that weight for 2 1/2 days. That shredder didn't have a chance!

Small machine, we tip at recycling lives in Preston. They have a massive shreader that takes whole cars and large metal beams without any problems. They process about 60 tons a day, chipped then put into containers for shipping.
Most of the shredders like the one you mention and that are used by autorecyclers are of a different design. They rotate sets of free hanging hammers (each hammer usually weighing 400 - 1250 lbs) that are fastened at their inner end to heavy round plates that spin at least several hundred times a minute. There's one of these, a rotary hammermill, at a steel/slag dump on lake Michigan with a set of 2200 lb hammers. Imagine those hammers spinning in a 10 ft diameter circle several hundred times a minute?
