As someone who doesn’t know how to can but wants to learn I really appreciate this review on these books. I want to learn the correct way from the start and not get disappointed from a wrong outcome. Don’t feel bad about pointing out things that are not right in these books and possibly unsafe. Thank also for mentioning the jams and jellies book 📖. I really appreciate this review.👍

The reviews were honest and tactful. Safety is always number one when canning. Your reviews may help someone not purchase these books and put themselves at risk if they're a new canner and don't understand all of the safety issues. You may have saved a family from botulism by your experience and review. And speaking of jelly, key-lime mango jelly? I need to go order that book!! Thank you for sharing!

The safety issues and end product of the food - is a great concern for new canners. I grew up canning, and so have about 45 years of experience. I am alarmed that these books are even out there. Thanks for the review! you've perhaps saved someone from serious problems.

It sounds like this book could cause some damage to a newby canner, this needs to be spread near and far!Great review, they cant always be good reviews, I know it makes you feel bad, I think, we need to write a canning book, with all the seasoned canners, I think it would fly off the book shelves! Xoxoxo

The best of books are and can be reviewed. All the time. Most book reviews are based on personal preference (like or don't like) yours was based on facts and I appreciate that so much! You were very sweet in this review, most book reviews not in favor of the book can be ruthless, that was not you. I am tempted to lean towards ruthless for reasons I will explain. So I agree with Leisa this was an Excellent review. hugs and love!

I along with many others thank you for stepping out of your comfort zone, and for saving someone from a potential disastrous outcome. Who knows how many children (and adults) you may have saved! Thank you for continuing to grow the new canners, and point them in the right direction for success! As you know (evident from your first canning videos), canning is such a intimidating place to go for many, and you have just turned on a light to avoid a couple pitfalls. Never feel bad for doing the right thing, and you did it the right way. Cant say it enough.. "Proud of you"!

Hi Heather! Thanks for the video. I am not sure if this is an issue with UA-cam or what but there are weird vertical lines moving back and forth across the screen while it is being watched. I came on to comment that you and your canning friends need to collaborate on a proper pressure canning book and found that others already commented in support of that idea. So add one more voice to that possibility. My husband and I are brand new canners. We got a water bath canner and had so much fun doing it together that we invested in a pressure canner - my husband makes awesome chili and would sometimes like to be able to grab a jar off the shelf for dinner on a busy day. I'm really grateful that you did this book review. I came very close to buying the first book you reviewed and am glad I didn't since we're so new to canning. We're using a few yt channels like yours and also the USDA Home Canning book and the Amish Canning Cookbook - we bought both on your recommendation. Thank you so much for your guidance. It's invaluable, especially for newbies like us.

Also for sharing the all the little things and the why's behind them. I do mainly smaller batches now because it's just me and my Mom. But remember well the years where I canny for my family. This is a good guide to canning. BALL THE BLUE BOOK : THE GUIDE TO HOME CANNING AND FREEZING COOKBOOK

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on these books! We all know that you aren't trying to tear down these women. Your points are all factual and right on. I will give you a heads up on another canning book. I saw an Amish canning book at Tractor Supply this past weekend (not the Amish Canning Cookbook that we all love). I think it was called Amish Canning and Preserving. I picked it up, so excited to have another Amish canning book, and then I turned to the soups and meats...they were all water bath canned for 3 hours...wah wah waaaahhhh! I feel like I need to make a PSA about that book and how that isn't safe canning practice, because there are so many new canners coming along that just don't know.

Thank you for doing this, you are so right with the jars not full. Asking for trouble. I watched an italian lady make a huge batch of tomato sauce. She boiled in a huge kettle and put a piece of basil in the jars and put the sauce in the jar and then put the lids on and turned upside down and not boiling them in water. Is this safe? I know its acid, but I was surprised she didn't water bath for awhile. Thanks There used to be a site I had about canning and pressure canning and computer crashed and I lost it. Maybe it was Ball, not sure. So frustrating.

    • @anniegee8349
      @anniegee8349 5 років тому

Donna Richey I believe they call that kettle canning, and it's really not recommended or safe anymore. I know lots of ladies do it, and many have lived to tell the tale, but now that we know better we should really do better, just like carseats, bike helmets, etc... right?

Great reviews Ms. Heather! The head space and pressure time issues are very worrisome, especially for new canners. Thanks for sharing!

I would have to agree with Aunt B, you should write a canning book. It's easy being able to follow you with the instructions you give/share when you are making or doing something.

I just got that same Jams and Jellies book from a great sale at Barnes and Noble. I paid $2.50 for it. I'm so excited to try some of the recipes in it! Here in Georgia, all the best canning varieties of peaches are ripe and ready, so the new recipes will be fun to try.

Thank you Heather. Well done. Martha Stewart use to get a lot of flack because she was putting out books without trying the recipes out first. This is when she first started. Have a blessed day.

Thanks for sharing your review- I am a seasoned canner and last year bought an updated Bell canning food and also an Amish one, very happy with both. I agree, you have to be sooo careful when feeding your family - thanks

Thank you for doing this review. I am very new to canning... so new I have yet to even try it yet (I’m still reading and buying supplies) and I can tell from my researching so far that everything you pointed out is correct, HOWEVER if I had one of those two first books I would absolutely be following the book to a tee just because of my inexperience. I would not have been able to discern where the errors are so THANK YOU 🙏🏼. I can tell you felt bad giving harsh criticism but your concerns are valid. I was thinking as you went along “Oh that’s right! It shouldn’t be that way.” But I know I wouldn’t have caught those points on my own. 👍🏻

Love your review! It is so helpful for us beginners to know what books not to buy. I will admit I am more apt to follow a youtuber like you rather than buy a book. You really know your stuff.

I'm in Alabama..first let me say my heart aches for you and your family....you are in my prayers.. The best information I ever hot on canning was from the state of Alabama..they used to have free books and pamphlets..all you had to do was ask...im thinking it was under agriculture.

As a old canner I have a ton of books. The ones I use the most are the USDA guide , the ball books and the book that came with my Presto canner.

I am new to canning and I really appreciate you doing this video. Thank you for your honesty and pointing out important things to look for like timing, head space, mixing ingredients, and how a recipe will call for a certain size jar and the photo has a different size.

Heather, your reviews are courteous and yet spot on, so Thank you from a fellow canner. I have to tell you that I have been with you since you first started out....you know the good ole days with Katscradle, I'm Still Working, Bexar Prepper, etc....and you have grown into such a wonderful canner. Keep up the good work and God bless.
