My indoor Peace Lily turned 47 years old in 2022, purchased in 1975, longer than most marriages. It once grew to a height of 2 1/2 feet, sprouting separate trunks from which leaves and berries grew. It couldn't support this weight at that height, so I propped it up with sticks, eventually needing to prune it back and shorten it. It has bloomed the white leaf lily stems many times, but we didn't touch its occasional small hard round red berries, since they might be toxic to humans. It went into shock during long distance moves, riding in its pot on the floor of my car. The changes into new climates and surroundings took 6-8 months for it to eventually recover. It's been re-potted into new larger pots many times, with new potting soil and drainage gravel at the pot's bottom, under which sits a large water collection saucer. It gets occasional fertilizer, and occasional water, especially when it starts to droop. It sits near the window, getting moderate light, and I open the blinds every morning just for it. Over the years, this plant's condition often reflected the same conditions in my own life. It is the only pet or plant in the house, and because it has been there through so many years of life's ups and downs, it has become a member of the family. Who would think that a simple house plant, with a normal lifespan of 3-5 years would live with you for nearly five decades? The question now, is whether or not it will outlive me?

My peace lily went absolutely bananas this summer and almost doubled in size over 3 months. Looking forward to seeing what it does this year; it’s already massive!
We got our peace lily from my grandmother in-laws funeral and with newborn twins I had no time to care for it. However, I get multiple white flowers every season without fail, when you said that is rare that made me think maybe a little bit of grandmas spirit is in that plant. Thanks for the tips, this is by far the easiest/ best looking house plant I’ve had.
just got a peace lilly from my Dad's funeral... I had one white flower but it broke off. My tips have browned and I did what you said and moved them away from the window and I can already tell a difference! I saved some rain water to see if they will like it. Thanks for the help!
Every time we move, the first plant I get is a Peace Lily. To me it's the easiest. And mine always flowers every year in the summer. I do fertilize mine with tea leaves-after I drink I cup I just let the bag dry up and then toss it on the pot. This is what I do to fertilize all my plants and Fish Emulsion mixed in the water during Summer.
@MeadhbhNi a natural fix for the mold is cinnamon on tops of soil. I have this problem when I order plants in the winter and they come soaking wet in my cold room they get sapphyridic fungus, w/e its called. and the cinnamon is also good for root health.
I've had tremendous luck with my peace lilies by adding to their pots some of my worm castings (I've done worm composting for many years!). In fact, I've never had healthier looking houseplants than since I started doing this. The worm castings gives me much better results than any other organic fertilizer I've used. I also get a few white "flowers" which are called brachts (I had to look it up!), and you're more likely to get them in high vs. low light situations. I've never attempted to propagate them, and will try to the next time I repot them. And you are right about them preferring airy soil, and watering no more often than once/week. And yes, I know they need to be watered if I notice any leaves start to droop. BTW, I just discovered your videos and find your way of presenting information endearing, entertaining, and informative. Bob H., Walnut Creek, CA.
These plants love coffee grounds big time. Once a year mix grounds into soil surface. It's depends on the size of the pot as to how much don't over do it.
Thanks for this video! Not knowing anything about peace lily's, I reluctantly planted mine on the side of my house where there's mostly shade and never watered it. And some how the plant managed to survive the past two years through the CA heat waves. Now the plant is bigger than ever.
Besides spraying distilled water on mine from time to time, I also make it a habit to spray distilled water on a sponge and wipe its leaves so that there are no water spots.
Hey Harli, good tips! I think you've made a positive vote for acquiring a peace lily! One can find them at big box stores usually and they are put on clearance quite frequently. GOOD TIP to give them water without chemicals. Peace lilies love summer rain, so if you can, take your peace lily out when it rains so that they can be watered and their leaves will be washed. I water mine with fish tank water, too!
I think these plants are gifted to someone when they're going through a loss. Don't make the same mistake I did. Apparently they're reserved for funerals.
My grandmother had a peace lily for 20 years, and when she got too old to keep caring for it she gave it to a friend. I was so disappointed I didn't get it, but didn't give her grief about it. She passed away this past October, and instead of flowers she requested peace lilies at her funeral. They were HUGE beautiful plants! Like 4 feet tall. Well they were left to the family after the funeral, and i got one! Its sprouting lilies now, and its like a little hello from gran.
My mom has given me a ton of plants and I think I've figured out what they are but I've been loving your videos for care and propagation of them. She gave me a huge peace lily and I've had 3 flowers bloom on it in the month or so that I've had it.
Soooo much help! Was given two peace lillies after my aunts passing and I've treated them both the exact same but one took a turn for the worst as soon as I got it home and it's breaking my heart. Been on the hunt for a solution! Thanks!
I see your video is old but I'm experiencing the same. I bought 2 at the same time, kept them close, one is thriving and one is dying 😢. I have been able to tell one is male and one is female. I keep talking to them to see if I can get any info. Wondering if you experienced that although they were the same, they had different needs. And you might now even have them anymore 🤣
Just got one a couple months ago and have been battling with it! This video was super helpful. Along with just watching and trying to figure out my little one for the past little while, I think I might be on the right track now. Thanks!
I water my peace lilly when it starts to droop a bit, I let it dry out before watering again. I keep mine by a north face window on a tall end table. It LOVES IT. Its flowered tons of times at least one or two flowers per couple of months.
Loved the the Peace Lily time lapse! Great info...had no idea nurseries used a hormone that helps the plants to flower. Wish they made it available to the public. Ironically I had just bought a Peace Lily and was planning on re-potting it today. Thanks :)
Here for information about repotting because I am about to help my mom repot 2 massive peace lilies that have been in the same soil for 25+ years. No idea how they regularly flowers with no fertilizer, near our front door and air vent! So true how quickly these guys perk up! I remember a number of times during my teens when I would forget to water our lilies while my parents were away and they would always perk up just in time
Mine flower all year since I have had it. I usually get 3 flowers when they bloom. I feed miracle grow and sometimes some tomato fertilizer every month. Very little fertilizer with the watering but I water on schedule and that’s what helps mine bloom. I also keep it in a south window towards the side so not directly in the sun all day.
Wow. That's amazing! I'm very new, so, could you please answer my question? which is better, keep the soil moist by adding little water every evening (about 5 pm) so it's not overwatered (just to keep it moist so the leaves won't droop) or let the soil dry and only water it when the leaves droop? Thank you~🙏
@@notsoanonymous5786 don't water it everyday!! You will cause the roots to rot. Check the soil every few days with your finger. When the to 2-3 inches of soil are dry, you can water it.
I started my plant room. I lived in Florida and moved to Michigan 2 years ago. I have always had house plants, lots, but Michigan is very different. I now have to re-learn (had plants in NJ) how to work with them. My plant room is coming along beautifully but l have gnats all in my nose and all over the house. I got the mosquito bits and l poured some in every plant. Now l am waiting for peace. Speaking of peace that peace lily drops some sticky liquid on my wood floor. Am not in love with her and l have had her for a while. My African Violets are just about dead. Thanks for your advice.
Thanks so much for this video. I've always been intimidated by peace lily's since I've always heard how fussy they can be. Your video has inspired me to get one :)
A self-watering pot works well, less watering required. I almost lost a very wiltered Peace Lily and brought it back to life using a teaspoon of seaweed solution in a litre of tepid water. My plants are positioned around 6 feet from a East facing large window, receiving plenty of indirect sunlight. In Australia, it's Spring approaching Summer and Peace Lillies love high humidity levels, so misting of the leaves replicates the humid air of the tropics.
@@Ms.S777 It's a Australian product called Seasol. Seasol products are available in a number of countries including New Zealand, USA, Vietnam, Malaysia, South Africa and Mauritius. I buy the 600ml bottle in Australia at Bunnings for around AU$6.60 and it lasts a long time, as you only need 20ml added to a watering can.
Rock on Plant Mama! You killed it in this video. 👍 Peace Lilies are like Diffenbachia in that they're "easy plants" but they can be tricky and get really mad at you if you get a couple of things wrong! You saved some plant lives with this video.
I have had the same peace Lily for over 10 years and I placed it in our sunroom which at times gotbvwey hot and this plant thrived. When I moved I out in in a less lighted room and it hasn't done well. I rook it out to my patio and it's doing great again.
Quoting from a Reddit thread: "The NASA studies on indoor pollution done in 1989 recommends 15 to 18 plants in 6 to 8-inch- diameter containers to clean the air in an average 1,800 square foot house. That's roughly one plant per 100 square feet of floor space."
This is entirely false. This study is constantly misrepresented. Honestly, it's disgusting how badly this misinformation has been spread. Both the video and your comment are one of thousands of examples. This is a published study, I encourage you both to go read it for yourselves- it doesn't take that long, I promise... "Don't take my word for it." Don't take youtube or reddits words for it either. The study is fundamentally different than growing house plants in dirt. The study uses inorganic CARBON media [a filtering mineral!!!], suspended over a literal electric fan- which then circulates air over the carbon. The study showed that under these extremely specific non-real-world scenarios, that certain chemicals were reduced over time. And in fact, the amount of chemicals it reduced was so incredibly small and under such a small volume of air, that your entire living space would have to be completely filled with plants- literally every square foot- to have any remote measurable effects *in the real world*. You simply cannot take a highly controlled experiment and blanket apply it to the real world. It doesn't work like that... and that's not what the study concluded. Literally opening a window for 30 seconds filters your air exponentially more than a peace lily.
When I started with plants I killed many over watering what iv realized is just watch them enjoy there beauty slight changes they are in need of something time for closer inspection I like as big a pot as possible it keeps things from changing to often n allows the plant room to grow n breath also I mix up my dirt with compost n tons of dried leaves which feeds the plant long term I collect fall leaves n store them dry so I always have some ready to feed my green babies they are the best fertilizer you can use n on the plus side they are free just some work collecting
Yes! That is such a good system to follow! That's exactly what I have started doing as well. I am for sure going to collect leaves to use! Thank you so much. That is such good advice.
Was going to upload a pic but I guess I can't. You can actually keep peace lilies roots wet 24/7 and the do fine. I think what people call over watering is actually just having to much water in the soil. In a aquaponics set up the water free flows. Water in a pot with soil there is no flow so it stagnates. So it's probably not as much the plant can't handle a lot of water I think if you grow them in a pot and add to much water you grow things in the soil or create some sort of stagnant water the plant just can't handle.
I do nothing but use tap water and mine bloom regularly. lol I thought it was one of those hard to kill plants. I can't seem to grow succulents. Or hardly any house plants. Outdoor plants are so much easier. I'm gonna follow you because yours a beautiful. Thanks
I’ve offered my huge Peace Lily to every visitor to my home but no one wants it. It was fine in my last house but moved to a much smaller space so just don’t have the room for it - but it’s so happy I can’t let it die! I water only when the leaves droop and lose their shine, then I pour a couple of pints straight in and within an hour it’s perked back up. I also wipe the leaves with a clean damp cloth and cut off any weak or discoloured leaves. I also stand it 10 foot away from a sunny window and drastically cut it back when it gets massive. It has 2-3 flowers every couple of months and I’ve received the plant as a housewarming gift... in 2004
My huge PL needed water for like the past WEEK & on Halloween it poured down rain here so I took her out & brought her in the next morning. She looked so happy outside but I had to bring her back in because of the cold front lol Anyway in the spring pop some slow release plant food tablets (30x30x30) into the soil & watch that baby bloom!🌱😉👍
Love your videos I just bought a peace lily I'm a new plant mama learning so much I watered my lily for the first time and t he next day she had about five yellow leaves Please help what did I do wrong and what can I do to prevent this from happening again. I did water her when leaves were dropping and soil was dry. Thanks
Was she flopping over when you decided to water her? It could be chemicals in the water or not enough aeration in the soil. Or she was too wet for too long! Sorry I'm unsure of which it is...
Something cool: Peace Lilly spathes(name of the blooms) come in almost every colour! I have a lovely red one that I just repotted. Some other advice: Peace Lillies like humidity, so spritz them with water every now and again to give it a teensy bit of humidity. It'll also do good to make sure you clean it's leaves, they are huge and collect dust pretty easily -which can hinder photosynthesis. Also, when the blooms die you can cut them off where it connects to the leaf, just don't cut off the whole leaf 😂
I just got one of these flowers and I didn’t know anything about flowers so you actually helped a lot !!! Thanks and just wanted to say you are very beautiful. I love your personality
I adopted a couple peace lily varieties from someone who worked in a windowless office. They were root bound, sun starved, and sitting in water inside pots with no drainage. I thought for sure there was no way I could turn them around and save them but both are thriving! They really are super hearty plants. One of them is so happy it put out three 'flowers' this summer and I have a question about them: They've turned from white to green and blend in with the rest of the foliage... should I prune off those flowers after they are no longer white?
Wow! That's impressive! Good work (: If you want to cut the flowers you totally can once they are green. In the past I have just waited until it begins to brown to give them the snip!
@@HarliG so glad you're doing this! I got an arrowhead plant for my anniversary and I thought you'd have a video about them since I've heard you say they're your favorite, but nope!
That you very much for this video. I learned recently that another cause of crispy leaves (especially on the tips) is water impurity and that distilled water was the best for a peace lily. Again, thanks.
Wilting causes stress! I don't want to bloom if I'm stressed out every two weeks! Water meters are very useful and easy on the budget. All plants do not want to be stressed!

Nahrin Zannat I don’t know for sure, I’ve never had a peace lily. If I had to guess I’d say that it needs more water and/or humidity since leaf tips will be the first to dry and turn brown/black when that’s the case
I have had a peace lily for several years, and have had it bloom a few years back. But had to move it from it's spot when I put a swamp cooler in and found my cats eating it. Yay toxic lilies! So its favorite North window is now a very dim east window high off the floor..

just got a peace lilly from my Dad's funeral... I had one white flower but it broke off. My tips have browned and I did what you said and moved them away from the window and I can already tell a difference! I saved some rain water to see if they will like it. Thanks for the help!
I had mine on a heating pad & it flowered! I was amazed!
Oh! I love that idea! I am an avid tea drinker so I am happy to learn I can put used tea leaves to use this way. Thanks!
are any tea leaves all right for this? (black/ green?)
What kind of tea do you use for the plant? That's awesome to hear because I drink tea daily!!
What kind of tea do you use? That sounds so cool!
@MeadhbhNi a natural fix for the mold is cinnamon on tops of soil. I have this problem when I order plants in the winter and they come soaking wet in my cold room they get sapphyridic fungus, w/e its called. and the cinnamon is also good for root health.
Love the clip of it picking up after watering!
It's depends on the size of the pot as to how much don't over do it.
oh! So good to know! I am going to try it. Thank you!
Dried coffee grounds?
@@mairwaugus5203 I think it's supposed to be used my dude,

@@EduardoSevero I used damp ones once and they got moldy, eew.
Oooh, thank you. I will let some grounds sit overnight in their water before wating day. Much appreciated tip!
I'll remember to stick my Peace Lily outside next time it rains! Thanks for the tip!
I've had my peace lily for 7 months and it's now flowering! :)
Getting my boyfriend this plant for our anniversary and decided to watch videos on it. 💕
I think these plants are gifted to someone when they're going through a loss. Don't make the same mistake I did. Apparently they're reserved for funerals.
I have so many plants and I just bought a peace lily yesterday! This was so helpful
This video might just save my plant. It's looking pretty sad at the moment. Thanks for sharing!
My mom has given me a ton of plants and I think I've figured out what they are but I've been loving your videos for care and propagation of them. She gave me a huge peace lily and I've had 3 flowers bloom on it in the month or so that I've had it.
How strange-- I love the Peace Lily; I have 3. They all have multiple new white “flowers” every few weeks. I didn’t know this was special; how nice!
You are lucky with the flowering
Thanks :)
Wow! Talk about perfect timing :P Yeah! I need some of the hormone for my Peace Lily! I want more blooms :P
I was gifted a peace lily from my mom which was given to her from my grandmother funeral ❤I’m here to get tips thank you
So glad I'm not the only weirdo that talks to her plants. Your videos always make me laugh. 🤣❤️
HAHA WE are all weirdos here :P Thank you!
Here for information about repotting because I am about to help my mom repot 2 massive peace lilies that have been in the same soil for 25+ years. No idea how they regularly flowers with no fertilizer, near our front door and air vent! So true how quickly these guys perk up! I remember a number of times during my teens when I would forget to water our lilies while my parents were away and they would always perk up just in time
"6+ plants in a room is kinda a lot" sweetie, i love you, but look around you 😂

I have 10 in mine, guess it depends on the size of your room 🤷♀️
I received my 1st peace Lilly it's leaves are dropping. Your post help so much.
Ours is the same!
Happy growing and long live your plant 👍
Brit Boone oooooooooohhhhh I see I see thank you so much for your help!!! 🙏
what do you do after the flowers die/start to revert to green? do you cut them off?
I bought a PEACE LILLY three months ago and it keeps blossoming - now it has eleven (11) blossoms!
By the way, I liked you high soprano BYEEEEE!
Just got my first Peace Lily! I'm so excited!
I use my aquarium water for my plants since I do weekly water changes.
Same.
I don’t know what I did because I’m not very good at plants BUT mine did bloom! After watching your video I’m pretty proud.
What is this seaweed solution? Where can i buy and whats the name/brand?
@@Ms.S777 It's a Australian product called Seasol. Seasol products are available in a number of countries including New Zealand, USA, Vietnam, Malaysia, South Africa and Mauritius. I buy the 600ml bottle in Australia at Bunnings for around AU$6.60 and it lasts a long time, as you only need 20ml added to a watering can.
@@koolkid7343 oh thank you! I live in the Philippines. Im not sure if we have those. Ill try to look around. 🙂
I sing to my Peace Lily and she loves it. She loves Neo Soul and Jazz music
Rock on Plant Mama! You killed it in this video. 👍 Peace Lilies are like Diffenbachia in that they're "easy plants" but they can be tricky and get really mad at you if you get a couple of things wrong! You saved some plant lives with this video.
You are so nice! Thank you!!
My dieffenbachia and my peace lily are the two houseplants that have stressed me out the most. 😰
Mine flowers all of the time. Even in winter when it should be dormant 😍
I’ve also had it for 15 yrs.
I absolutely love my peace lily 🌱🌱🌱
I have had the same peace Lily for over 10 years and I placed it in our sunroom which at times gotbvwey hot and this plant thrived. When I moved I out in in a less lighted room and it hasn't done well. I rook it out to my patio and it's doing great again.
Quoting from a Reddit thread:
"The NASA studies on indoor pollution done in 1989 recommends 15 to 18 plants in 6 to 8-inch- diameter containers to clean the air in an average 1,800 square foot house.
"Don't take my word for it."
Don't take youtube or reddits words for it either.
@@googlepleaseleavemealonean6198 Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Good information, unpleasantly provided. ;} Thanks for the detail, regardless.
Thanks
I use fish water on my peace lily! and she has 7 new blooms coming in :)
So interesting!!!
So good to know! Thanks for the tip! I will definitely try that (:
I got two small peace Lilly's last year and they are absaloutly huge won't stop growing, such a beautiful plant
I’d love a care video on African violets 💚
I’ve had a peace lily for about two years and it has flowered multiple times.
Oh whew my peace lily just started drooping a lot. That is what brought me here
Something cool: Peace Lilly spathes(name of the blooms) come in almost every colour!
I think you mean “hardy,” as in robust. 😉
My peace lily is finally blooming.. 😍 Her flowers are so gorgeous 😍

@@SnehaSasikumar Hello, I have two peace lilies which had flowers on when I bought them, one didn't flower again until four years later when it was weak and had started to deteriorate, but it was only one flower. The other is very healthy with plenty of lush green foliage, but three years on and there are still no more flowers despite good care, re-potting and regular feeding. I think it's all down to this secret hormone that she mentions that the plant nurseries use to force the the plants on and make them flower so that people will buy them, but I live in hope. Best of luck with yours.
Everyone keeps saying they are the easiest plants, weirdly it's the only one I have had problems with 😅 I kept her too close to the window and hadnt watered her enough (she needs more than any of my other 9 plants in that area).
