  • During his trip to America in 1959, Nikita Khrushchev stopped by 20th Century Fox studios in Los Angeles to mingle with some of Hollywood's biggest stars. While there, he ranted about his canceled trip to Disneyland, met Marilyn Monroe, and watched the filming of a scene from "Can-Can."
"Cold War Roadshow" premieres November 18, 2014 on American Experience PBS.

I'd be mad if I came all the way to the United States and couldn't go to Disneyland.

Pictures of Khrushchev smiling with Mickey Mouse would severely damage the US's Cold War propaganda at the time. Humanizing Russians is a no-go, and still is.

on this one, the bad guys won. i was 11 then and i was so happy to hear Khrushchev was going to Disneyland, relatively new then, first went when i was 7, first year of Disneyland. my favorite place in the world, of course, and all around me there had been messages about how the communists weren't really human, they were drab and dark, and so don't worry about them, it's a war. when i heard he was coming for a visit i thought this was so wonderful, he wanted to see the US, and then they said he wanted to go to Disneyland. the world really good be a better place, i thought. i wasn't the only one either. then his disney trip was canceled. there wasn't nothing about that, nothing to see here, move on, forget about it, still enemies, more nukes to build, no worries. but in recent years i googled it and it makes me as sad now as it did then. i read that he wanted to learn about disneyland and hoped to build one in the Soviet Union. it hurts that this is the way things went and all things that came with that, the wrong path.

Sadly this could've been the era that ended the cold war. Khrushchev was the USSR leader that wanted to start making political and economic reforms within the Soviet Union for the better which seems to have set the path for Gorbachev's rise years later. People in the United States even back in this time frame were fearful of nuclear war but didn't seem interested in a peaceful resolution when Khrushchev proposed one.

@bidenwearstrumpscrappypamp1829 He wanted his ideology to achieve world dominan regardless of whether there was military tension initially or not for a few more years. Absolutely deluded people can't grasp the fact that these superpowers were going to battle to the end. Only one could and had to prevail.

Wasnt there a tale of Sinatra saying to a group of his buddies, "Hell, the guy (Kruschev) wants to go--why dont we grab him, his old lady and kid, and take 'em out there (Disneyland) ourselves?!". ?

Khruschev wanted to see Disney and visit Disneyland, but Eisenhower was closer to the Russian Jew movie moguls who wanted to impress Khruschev with their big studios. I remember one political cartoon of the day showing a sad-faced Khruschev with a Micky-Mouse-Club hat looking in the mirror with the caption, "I would have wowed them."
