Jay Bates has a video on dialing in your spindle, it will really help eliminate alot of sanding.

Thanks Chris! I have seen Jay's video and it was very helpful in getting my spindle about as dialed in as possible with my old fashioned eyeball. I think the issue that led to more sanding than usual on this project was that I'm still learning what feeds, speeds, and direction/pattern of cut yield the best result for each type of material/species of wood and my machine and bit (bits & bits 2" facing mill). In this case I didn't want to take too much material off with the facing bit so I didn't keep trying different combinations once I felt I could sand out the imperfections.

Another nice video. At time 2.52 what is that tool you're using I don't think I've seen one before. Thanks again for you sharing are you on FB following the AVID group there?

Thanks David! That is a Makita cordless multitool like this one: Makita XMT03Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Multi-Tool, Tool Only smile.amazon.com/dp/B00LIV11RG/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_6W7WPMHKGG73K80XDTPB?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I try to buy all the same line of tools if I can to maximize compatibility on batteries and chargers. A few years back I switched over to Makita's LXT line and I've been very happy with all their stuff.
I'm not on the Avid CNC FB yet but I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip!

So, very interesting! Did you wax the tape where the epoxy will set? Mould release wax is good, but any good floor wax will help. Epoxy has a way of seeping everywhere! Lots of great ideas demonstrated! Cutting and finishing slabs is one of my goals, maybe even as a sub-contractor. Did you wear a respirator while sanding? Epoxy is not too user friendly on the lungs, even when using dust collection on your sander. Just be very careful. I saw the Seattle in blue script, so are you in the Seattle area? I am located in Burlington WA. Really liked your music again! I built a custom 30’ racing sailboat with epoxy as the bonding and laminating agent, and a few stitch and glue kayaks, so lots of sweaty respirator hours. Take care! 😎

Hi Paul. I'm glad you liked the video and music again! I didn't use any wax on the tape. The only area where I had an issue with release was where the epoxy had seeped under the wood and there wasn't any tape. That was definitely a lesson learned. I am located on the north end of Seattle near Everett. As far as respirators go... I try to always use one when sanding or spraying but it is easy to get moving and forget to put them on. Your boat/kayak projects sound really interesting! I would love to build a boat someday. What kind of time commitment did a 30' boat require?

@@NorskieCNC The boat took 4 years, mainly because it was not at home, but at a friend’s shop about 20 min away, also still racing boat #1. Then it was heated only by an airtight stove, so as soon as that went cold, the epoxy almost stopped hardening until the stove got fired again. I was working full time, so after work and weekends were fairly full. Some days it was just re-fire the stove and go home. Three of us did most of the work and when extra hands were needed, all the crew showed up, like lifting and bonding the deck by hand. Much of the interior was built outside of the hull and then set into the hull. The entire project was designed on my computer using yacht design software, by Vacanti, and that was really great to use. After trials we raced it to Hawaii, locally, Swiftsures and two races a round Vancouver Island. After 35 years of racing (23 in my first boat), I had to give it up for health reasons (respiratory). I’m getting my garage shop, two of a 3 space garage, reconfigured for the CNC, and still leave space to build kayaks. Almost all other machines on rollers will help to maximize use as needed, and when the weather is nice, use outside (saw and planer work). Sorry this is a bit long! What else do you do in your shop? How about a video shop tour? 🪚 🛠😎

That sounds like you should do a UA-cam documentary on the boat and all your travels/racing! I'm waiting to do a shop tour video because we just moved here and it's nowhere near where I want it to be. I need to tear out the old shop cabinets, remove the wire shelves, and build a bunch of new storage/cabinets to make it respectable. Then I'll do the virtual tour :)

Video was good but the audio was very hard to listen too. Much more interesting when you do a voice over and cut a lot of the beat out.
    Liked the project. Good job

Thanks for the feedback Bruce! I had other similar comments and have been trying to find the sweet spot since I'm fairly new at making UA-cam content. Did you watch my most recent video about the scissor lift? I'd be interested in knowing if you thought the audio levels were ok in it.
