I was a seamstress when I was younger. When I was left to provide for my 5 children I took a government job. I do not enjoy my job and the stress creates is awful in my life. If I continue for 3 more years I can retire with a pension. I am trying to hold out. I already know what my retirement looks like and I can’t wait!! I am going to make little girls dresses and teach others to sew! It literally is my calling. Thank you for encouraging me!
It'll be here before you know it. And someday, when your kids are mature enough to appreciate your sacrifice, they will have a great deal of respect for you. You are being a good mama. ❤

Thank you as always! I retired from my corporate job 18 months ago and now have a successful, growing Bridal alterations business. I spent 5 years building my business out of my home while still working FT. Next month I'm moving into storefront studio space. It's definitely a dream come true.

Congrats. 🎊🍾🎈. How do you learn to do alterations? I watch videos from this channel but I want hands on to learn. What would you guys recommend for someone who want to get into this industry do if they have zero sewing experience or knowledge?
@@AquaBloomStudio Find someone who can teach you basics and advanced. Also buy gowns from Goodwill and seam rip them apart to see what you are dealing with. Buy bridal alterations books. Susan Khalje Bridal book is awesome
i was not fired, but had to resign from a non-sewing job because my husband was offered a position in a different state. i've always loved sewing and now i had my own costume shop. never would have thought that I would be this excited to wake up in the morning!

I’ve gone through a similar job situation in a different profession. I’ve realized through years of experience and observing, most of the time it has nothing to do with your performance. It is personal and deeply rooted that person’s personal issues. If i went back, i would just tell my younger self to not put up with it. Nothing good happens by putting up with a boss who’s out there to get you.

I've done costumes for almost 30 years. Decided to leave industry . Spent thousands to earn certification for medical coding and billing. Finally passed test. Could not get job to save my life. A yarn shop I frequent found out about my background in sewing and put the word out. I am now on my 2nd year with my own alterations business specializing in bridal. The sewing wont let me leave. Thank Goodness. P.S. Love your videos.

I learned sewing in germany and when I did that my teacher would tell me off. But it is genius and helps a lot. They just didnt expect me to be clever enough to sew straight even if the edge is not.

I got bullied at work too. But I didn’t leave until I saw the bully get put under review and made to work harder by higher management first. It was awesome.

Thank you. I've been sewing for ever but started working on my own full time 3 years ago. I love what I do but sometimes life gets in the way. Everytime I want to give it up something makes me stay. Today it was watching your video.
I’ve been doing the jagged cuts when doing hems like this for many years. It’s one of those small tricks that help in a very big way. Also, when I’ve finished sewing the hem and before re-sewing the lining back seam, I iron the hem towards the lining from the inside. Then I sew the back lining seam and iron the outside. Ironing on the inside is a bit fiddly, but gives a much smoother finish on the outside and makes the final pressing so much easier. Btw... I love all your videos!

@@elizabethl.1350 I too miss bridal sewing. Since the start of the pandemic, my business has dried up completely. As a result, I’m having to change my business completely! A bit late in the day to change so dramatically as I’ve been a bridal specialist since 1984, but money has to be made! And yes, the money was pitiful. But the Bridezillas? .... I certainly don’t miss them!!
I was fired with no reason provided from a small bridal business last spring (I was working as a seamstress). It's been a blessing in so many ways to be out of that environment but it's taking time for me to recover from the experience. I felt screwed over in more ways than one but I'm much happier working for myself, even if I don't have the enough business to support myself quite yet.
Also, I love the tip about cutting a jagged line! I've done that on accident before but now I'll be doing it on purpose!

I just recently found your channel. I'm so glad I did, too! I have an "I got fired" story, too. But it's more like, I got fired from my monster boss to find my most favorite ever corporate job, only to be laid off due to covid. I told my husband I'd never be as happy as I was in a job as I was at that last job, and can we just PLEASE figure out how I can stay home?? 2020 was they year I became a SAHM, homeschooling our girls. I also started teaching sewing lessons, I started volunteering for Quilts of Valor, exploring formal wear and bridal sewing, and now starting a sewing ministry at my church! I am so so SO much happier these days! Thank you for your stories and sharing your tips and tricks of the industry. I have been soaking them in and putting in the practice. I love how you present information in an easy to follow format. You're a great teacher! Thank you!
I absolutely loved this video! You are such an inspiration! I was fired from a sewing job after I helped this man when he was super short handed.... then he fired me via-voicemail after his workers came back after they walked out! Anyway.... I just love your videos, your voice is so soothing and friendly and I am so glad I found your channel! I am still a seamstress and love it! I love fixing things! Hey- I have watched your channel for a couple of years. I retired from teaching, and took a corporate job. I survived it for 6 months and got fired. I was so distraught. I do feel that I have been meant to be a sewist all my life. I have sewn since I was 9 and made many different things from every day wear clothing to home dec to formal wear. I went to college to be an RN and spent 40 years at that profession, during which I flipped from one area of the hospital to another. I was always uncomfortable in that role and nervous, and felt like an imposter. Don't get me wrong, I was good at nursing and it came easy to me in school and I passed boards the first try. But I still felt like an imposter. I guess that is because I was in the wrong job. I was always interested in fashion and kept up with what was new and up and coming. But my love of sewing and being creative was never encouraged to be something I did as a profession, it was encouraged like a hobby. It is a bit too late for me to enter it as a profession, I am at retirement age now, but still love to create, so I sew girls pageant wear, and sell on the internet. It satisfies my creative side and gives me money too.
What a beautiful story. Even if you don't sew full time, many seamsters can work for many years after their earlier retirement. I'm always encouraged by that fact. You have many years of fun left!! ❤

I love this story. I follow this channel to maybe one day be a seamstress. I love sewing too but at the moment have kids to raise, so I will learn on my own and sew kids clothes just to keep up with my skills so I can work toward that goal.

I too trained as a nurse for years. I experienced so much racial and sexual harassment in my field. The male doctors want to bed me and the female nurses and hated me bc I was very good at my job and was asked to do (anesthesia) during endoscopy procedures more often then they were. One day a new nurse manager came in and hated me in an instant. (I have that look, I was told) she found any find of excuse to try to fire me. Gossip travels fast. I had already started my own business in the medispa arena. I was a single mom of 3 bio kids and 6 foster kids. I needed extra the income and I did not want to go on welfare. Soon I was earning more than enough to leave and follow through with my dream. Yes.. One day she fired me. One day, one of my foster kids got hit by a car and I had to go to the hospital but since I was one of 2 other nurses on duty, I could not leave. The doctor on duty there was following my situation and he called her to tell her I had to go to see my foster child He was giving me permission. I only had 2 hours left on my shift anyway. But come Monday morning, she fired me. I was so happy she did. It was very emotional and I freaked out a bit, but it gave me to opportunity to build my business and made it a very very successful company. I retired to live in another country now and I am returning yo my first love, sew, designing and metalsmithing. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

I loved my job as a teacher for almost 40 years but now I want something to do at home every day. I am sewing clothes for myself and find myself looking at your videos because so many friends ask me to put new hems in prom dresses or repair other clothing. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have a satin prom dress to re-hem and I wanted it to be very nice and even. You have given me so many tips and I just ordered left and right invisible zipper foots and also organ needles. It is a curved hem and I was really nervous about making it look nice. So happy to have 2 methods to try since I have to cut off 6 inches. I hope to do the 2 seam method because it looks easier. Thank you so much! I love to sew and want to find a place to be useful with my 50 years of sewing experience!

My story is very similar to yours. I was 20 years on a job, with a great performance record. I loved the work and the work place. The newish Director had it in for my department. I was the last to go. Why why why is also my question. Still waiting for a safe landing, but grateful for helpful supportive people. Moving past was hard work but it can be done. Congratulations to you for finding your avocation.

Hey, I had basically the same thing happen to me this past December. It was my kick in the butt to go full-time with my sewing. I've been doing it on a very part-time basis for over 20 years. So I fully agree with you and see how that negative experience can be exactly what we need!

Oh my goodness! Yes!! The gut feeling is everything. I have been sewing ballet costumes for a few years now, and actually that is how I found you. I wanted to sew on beads and lace really well and discreetly and wound up finding you (Thank you by the way). Anyway, I LOVE sewing and designing but wanted to leave the costume world for the fashion design world. I will say thst I had a strong gut feeling when I made that move that it was what I was meant to do. I am SO happy where I am now and love every wonderful grueling second of it. Just thought I would back up your story of finding your path in life with my own. It hasn't always been easy getting to where I am now, but it was worth the wait and struggle.
Thought I wanted to teach until a horrible principal decided to make my life miserable. It did make it so easy to go back to sewing full time though. Great video, by the way!

I just found your channel - this is awesome! I have worked a corporate job for decades, retired then called back in as contractor - love to sew and create just never had time. My husband of 46 years passed from Covid last year and now I have free time and need to fill that time. I've always wanted to sew a wedding dress - never had time or reason but you have inspired me! i just love you. 1988 quit govt job. Walked home. Spent last $40 on earrings!? on phone voicemail was ballet company wanting me to do costumes. Jump.
I wasnt fired I left , but I had a boss like that he was an arsehole made my life a living hell. But now I am living the dream working towards becoming a lawyer getting back into sewing ...as a hobby , but designing hats and thinking about setting up a sewing shop online.
Sorry to hear that, that's really strange you are a marvellous seamstress, don't even think about your boss for a second longer you can make it wherever you are.
Your story is incredible and really touched my heart. I remember once not being offered a fashion opportunity, not due to my lack of skill and creativity, but because they sensed that something was "unresolved" within me. At the time, I took that critique personally but later on I realized they were right. I was not ready, and I needed to take time on my own to dig deep, reflect, and overcome past traumas. I am currently still in search of new opportunities, but I feel much more clear mentally, and I feel more driven to approach fashion and design in a new, open, and healthy way.
Some of the worst immediate moments of our lives turn out to be the best things that ever happen to us because they allow for a forced (or freedom to) re-route life's journey.

I had a bad boss like that too. A lawyer. Everyday he would angrily correct me for the smallest things (a missing period, double space, the way I answered calls) he had it against me. The more he pointed out mistakes and made a BIG deal out of them the more mistakes I would make because I was stressed. He would constantly scream at me and not the other legal assistant who also made mistakes. I ended up quitting one day in the middle of a busy billing cycle. Just walked out never came back- no regrets. People like that belittle others so they feel better about their many insecurities. Feeds their ego. Today I'm working for another lawyer who happens to be the best, most patient boss I've ever had. BUT my dream is to design formal gowns and bridal gowns so I'm doing it on the side when I have time. One day soon. Thank you for your inspiring video!

Wow! This story is so similar to mine. I worked as the alterations Mgr at a major bridal salon chain, (DB,) for years. I was constantly fighting with the store manager to give me the "permission" to run my department. I met their very unrealistic sales goals and was never given the hours needed to sew the sold alterations. I was written up for "spending too much time" with my brides during their fittings even though we are suppose to "build a relationship" with our brides. I was an advocate for the 3 other seamstress who worked with me, and was told I was too nice and not strict enough. The store manager would audit our pinned dresses and criticize our work constantly. This is the same store manager who told a bride I would be out soon to "measure the inseam" on her wedding gown. Lol. She was also a monster and created high school drama and turned staff members against me with silly lies. I kept working there even tho my hair started falling out and I was constantly worried that my brides dresses wouldn't get finished in time. I was finally fired for insubordination. That was the best day of my life! It has taken years, but I have built my own business where I can build genuine relationships with my brides and help make every bride feel beautiful!!!! I was born to be a bridal seamstress and I am now sew grateful for what I went through. Anyone who wants to have this career just know that you can do it and to have confidence in yourself. Thank you for the lovely video. It helps me a lot. I have studied and worked in different field for more than a decade. When I was younger, I was always interested at how to design/make garments. But my parents thought making clothes can’t bring me enough money so they decided business management should be my major in uni. I had quite successful career in my parents opinion - good money with good position, but I wasn’t happy. I quit my job in my late 30’ and entered to an uni as a Fashion Technology full time student. I will be graduated in two years time. I have never found myself this happy although I don’t have the same financial level as before. I believe that money is not everything and age doesn’t matter, the most important thing is that what your dream is and what makes you happy.

As much as I think is wrong that they fired you because of a gut feeling I am very happy that you doing what you love And that there is a chance that you want to have started doing this if it wasn't for that time in your life.

I think you started these videos for me. I always dreamed to be a bridal seamstress, ended up in a computer relates job anyway. Now while my children are small i have to decide whether i go back to the job I hate or start something new.
I had a very similar experience. Life is way too short to let someone give you almost daily grief. In the end, it is their problem, not yours. I don't know why some people feel they have the right to persecute another person, but the issue is theirs, not ours!!! Good luck! But I can tell you really don't need it!!!
Thank God I live in a Country that has Unions and employment laws, sacking someone because of a bad feeling isnt legal where I live.
I had a boss that tried to do that to me, the Union made my employer pay me 3 months pay in compensation 🤣 Great sewing tips, thanks.
Seriously I never knew you can fire someone without any reasons. Sometimes even if there are reasons because of union actions its very hard to fire someone

@@hiwall4883 yes. And I am from a 3rd world country. So to hear a country like USA which suppose yo be "the great nation" treats employees like this is really suprising. And I heard its very common too. I had a manager like that back when I worked in a bank. She made me hate my job. Although I really felt like leaving my job I wanted that job. So finally I contacted HR, complained about her and got a transfer to another branch. Ofc she suceeded in making me hate my job because even though my new place was great I couldn't love my job as before. It made my eyes open to how much it sucks to work for someone else. But I left the job on my own terms.
Sounds to me like he needed to cut costs by firing someone. He tried to get you to quit by being mean to you. When you didn't quit, he had to do it himself. Happens in all kinds of jobs.

Mirror cutting is great, but I do an extra step. I have noticed sooooo many hems that are terribly lopsided right from the factory. If I only mirror cut, measuring up from the hem, I recreate the lopsidedness in the altered hem.
To avoid this, I run the tape measure down the side seam, from the waist seam to where the new hem will be, and place a pin there to indicate the new length. I ensure that this measurement is the same on both sides, going down from the waist. Then when I pin the hem together to mirror-cut it, I match up those two pins rather than matching the edges of the original hem.
I also usually press a crease in where my new hem will be, and hang the dress up to double check that the hem is visually even.
Do a lot of you guys notice ready-made gowns that come with uneven hems?
Hi Karen, yes over the years I have encountered the odd satin gown that has been off kilter. I will say the worst culprits I have found plenty of are the organza and chiffon gowns. More like hemming a screen door fabric. But like anything else there are yucky, better, best of both these fabrics. The cost of the gown predicts weather the alts are going to be a nightmare or a joy. Cheers

how I identify with you. after eight years working in a kitchen, I left there and today I make sewing a profession. I can't imagine my life any other way
I had a boss like that. I was working as a seamstress in a very large bridal shop at the time. She wouldn't call you into the office to correct you. She would scream at you in front of everyone else. One time she was screaming at me and shaking her finger at me, almost hitting me in the nose, telling me that I was incompetent. She was the alterations manager yet she didn't know how to sew, not even a button
Ooo!!! I wonder if we had the same manager!!!😂 I spend 2 days teaching her how to thread a hand needle- kid you not! She claimed she was a well known designer in her previous state and yet she couldn't thread a needle, and hardly ever sewed a dress! I quit because if her and started my own business.

Yea, I know I was a born to be a seamstress, but stayed in healthcare for a "normal job". My machine stayed out 24/7, and I always had a project going on. I missed my calling! But now I'm retired and I am living out my dream job in my home, though I don't sell anything!
appreciate your lessons. I have done bridal alterations some but I like the additional lessons to make my job easier.
I am doing a lace /sheer sleeve that has to be narrowed 2 inches under arm. It has buttons at bottom inside of sleeve. Would like to do a French seam. I am not sure how to do the bottom with the buttons and loops. any suggestion would be appreciated.
A-ha, guess what happened to me? I got fired too from a job I had then went to learn sewing because it was my passion always. The same job hired me back 4 months later 😂. I got an opportunity to keep learning off working hours and also save up to start my sewing business. One year down the line I got fired again! 😂 😂 But this time I had already started my seamstress career. 3 years later I can't complain and I'm never going to employment ever again. I'm glad to find this channel 💝.

There are two different ways to use the word "professional." One is, opposed to a hobby, which means, if you sew for a living, you are a professional sewist.
The other is opposed to manual labor. I was using the word in this context. I was not in the role of a skilled laborer at the time. It was a non-manual paid position.
Hopefully you'll extend some grace and get to know me better so that you would know I am the last person who would claim that seamsters are not in a profession.

After hemming i think...it should top stitch it so that its easy to iron the edges... i do that all the time
I think you mean understitching? Yes, that makes for a very smooth edge. I don't do that for all gowns. It depends on the pricing tier the bride wants to be in. --or if it is necessary. Many times it is not necessary if I use the clapper.
I have been sewing since I was little girl but haven't been able to do it for many years. I have been moving every 6 moths since 2017 so I have learned to pack light and not attach to things. Although, when I settle down finally, I will invest to sewing machine to get my passion back.
Asking for an advice. I do think in what order I will do things but just looking for a confirmation. I bought my wedding dress and it needs quite a lot of alterations (take in waste, hemming, taking in the shoulder and fitting the sleeve again). My thinking is to alter the waste first so I can determine how much to take from the shoulders as the top part is quite long for my torso. And then lastly hem the dress. I'm correct doing it in this order? 🤔
