    A fairly easy method to hem chiffon or sheer on a wedding dress; compares well with the original commercially made hem.
    It works well on the straight of grain, and the bias and curves, and over seams.
    This method does not use a roll hemming foot.
    It can be used for other lightweight fabrics.

    hi ... thank you so very much .. I have been sewing for over 35 years and I have always struggled with hemming chiffon. I have in the past found it to be a source of frustration and a time stealer. Thank you from the furthest part of New Zealand. You have made this technique very simplistic and a time saver

      Thanks for the comment. I agree completely - I have found it to be the greatest challenge - it just has to look good! It took a few years before I worked this method out - I had another method that worked, but was a small scallop edge - acceptable, but not the real thing - and problematic if one had to join it into a roll hem - didn't look the same! From another island in Canada - PEI!

    You are a lifesaver! This tutorial is brilliant, and the technique is blessedly manageable. I was roped into making all the drapes for a newly built tiny house, and she wants sheers! This is my first time working with any type of slippery fabric, and it has been challenging to say the least. I'm pretty sure you just saved my sanity 😊 You are my hero!

      You may like this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhVd Qd6zB0 which shows a narrow weighted hem on chiffon. I am going to use this method for some light weight drape (antique satin) I have been asked to make, as the hem will look good from both sides - back and front (for a room divider drape) and the light weight will help them hang better. Good lick with your project!

    I used this tutorial about 2 years ago and it worked wonderful. Thank you !!!! Didn't think I would have to use it again but, my granddaughter asked me to hem her homecoming dress yesterday, not thinking it would be chiffon but, it was, so thank you again for keeping this tutorial up. I could not have done it without you.

      Thanks for the comment! Yes, chiffon can be a challenge when beginning. Try out the hemming technique on a scrap piece of chiffon first. You may have to practice a few times to get really comfortable with it. Even though I have sewn for many years, this is something I still do quite often if I am not sure how a hem will look and work out with a particular fabric. Good luck!

      How tightly do you stretch the fabric while sewing and why?

    • @louisemacadam9904
      @louisemacadam9904  8 років тому +1

      +Lynda Peck I stretch the fabric slightly, more on the straight of grain and less on the bias. I find that any line of stitching tends to have a slight gathering effect, especially with light weight fabrics - except in the case of knits - and sometimes with them as well. It may depend on your machine and how the tension is set. I stretch it so that the final result will lie or hang smoothly with no pulling or gathering at all. Hope that helps!

  • @barabi51
    @barabi51 9 років тому

    I do alterations, and often am asked to hem formal gowns. I have hated working with chiffon because it has been so hard to get a decent hem that didn't end up looking as if the machine had chewed it. I love the idea of folding the hem and stitching it BEFORE trimming it. Makes so much sense. There is a chiffon bridesmaid gown hanging in my sewing room at this moment, waiting to be hemmed, so I look forward to experimenting with this method--probably with some scrap chiffon first, and then with the real thing. Thanks so much.

    I do sewing jobs for people, and have been asked several times lately to hem ball gowns/prom dresses, something I have never had much experience of and was very scared of doing! I have been watching video after video of how to use a rolled hem foot in order to hem these dresses, and whilst I am improving at using the rolled hem foot, I am sooooo looking forward to trying your method, as it looks easier and probably better. This is one of the most helpful sewing videos I've watched - thank you!

    • @louisemacadam9904
      @louisemacadam9904  7 років тому

      That is exactly my own experience! I had worked out another type of hem that got me out of trouble, until eventually I came up with this method.
      Try the method out on a piece of chiffon or satin or other lightweight fabric (lining fabric) first to see how you get along. Use a piece of fabric that would have the same curves as a dress hem - so that you would get practice doing this method on the straight of grain, curves, on the bias etc. Then when you feel confident, tackle the dress. Let me know how you get along and thanks for the comment!

    • @lizziel4876
      @lizziel4876 7 років тому

      I had already cut the hem to the necessary length but had left just enough to use your method. I practised on the piece I had cut off and then went ahead and did the dress, both outer fabric and lining, and it has turned out very well. I am really pleased with it, so thank you so much for sharing this method! The main fabric was chiffon and the lining was satin. My only slight misgiving was that the two lines of stitching meant that the chiffon hem felt slightly stiffer than I would have liked - but not so much that it bothers me. I used Guterman polyester thread , which looks thicker than that used in the original stitching, and I'm wondering if there is a lighter weight thread I can buy for this type of work. I have looked into it but can't find anything. I'm sure professionals must use something different - have you any advice on this?

    • @louisemacadam9904
      @louisemacadam9904  7 років тому +1

      Great to know it worked out so well for you! Yes, I have had the same thoughts about having two rows of stitching as opposed to one. I would say that Guterman thread is about a 70 weight. One can get 100 weight thread - maybe even lighter than that. I would agree that professionals would use something different. However I have noticed that the original hem on dresses is often thicker than the one I/we do, because the fabric is sort of bunched or folded over more than the two times that we do it. I would be very interested to know how they do their hems - as well as the thread weight and the source of the thread. As a matter of interest, one student studying fashion design contacted me about doing this hem in the video - which would lead one to think that they do not have a "professional" method! I will see what I can find out about thread sources and hemming method!

    What a wonderful, talented instructor you are. I learned so much from your video. This past week, I attempted to make a chiffon mobius scarf and what a time I had!!! I practiced and practiced: I tried changing the sewing machine tension, the thread, the needle, different
    stitches, and still I couldn't make it work. Finally, I tried (as you showed) holding the fabric tightly in the front and the back and sewed using a simple straight stitch. It worked. I was so frustrated by this time that I made just a simple scarf, not the mobius style; maybe next time. Your sewing machine sounds like it's in great condition - makes a nice sound. Thanks so much.

    • @louisemacadam9904
      @louisemacadam9904  9 років тому

      Well, that is very interesting! I am glad you finally succeeded. Did you make this scarf as a tube or as a flat piece, with the ends joined so as to have the twist in the scarf? I assume you did it as a flat piece, and that you needed to hem the long edges....? I will try and make a video soon about hemming a chiffon or similar material scarf.
      My machine is a Pfaff 360 - quite an old model. I am still able to get parts for it, fortunately! It works very well - hardly ever misses stitches, and it will do some fairly heavy sewing - I do upholstery etc. and it will handle the heavy thread. I do keep it clean and oiled as needed, and it thanks me for this!

    • @lamzydivey7150
      @lamzydivey7150 9 років тому

      Louise MacAdam I ended up making it as a flat scarf, but that wasn't my intention. I will attempt another mobious scarf. Thanks for responding.

    • @louisemacadam9904
      @louisemacadam9904  9 років тому

      lamzydivey From what I understand, you wouldn't need to hem a mobius scarf, as it is made as a tube...?
      I am not exactly sure as I haven't actually made one - I have only seen it done on UA-cam. I will have to try it!
      But I think it could be made flat (if the fabric has a finished look on both sides) or as a tube; either way could be done with the mobius twist in it.
      If you find a piece of fabric that has both sides with a finished look, but the look is different on each side, such as satin backed crepe for instance, then a flat mobius may look very nice, with a two tone, or two colour effect.
      Just thinking here.....!

      Practice on the excess length of hem fabric if there is enough of it,
      until you feel comfortable to tackle the "real" (desired length) hem.
      If you don't have enough length to practice with,
      use another similar piece of chiffon fabric to practice on.
      Practice on the bias, on curves, and on the straight of grain,
      and over seams, if you can.
      Good luck!

      And a pic of the dress. I could not have made such a beautiful hem without your tutorial! And I was going to just hem an inch all around, but I got down in the floor and pinned it all the way around- and it was not an even pin - ranging from half inch to maybe 3 inches. goo.gl/photos/4wwASXKb14PqK9W26

      Yes, I have found that I always have to pin or mark the hemline while the person is wearing it - one cannot follow the original hem to take off the same all around. The dress looks beautiful! And your daughter also!!

    Thank you so much for this video. I was asked to hem a bridesmaid dress for a girl at work, thinking how hard could it be? Well once I got the dress home I realized it was not going to be easy. Thanks for the comment Shivani Priya!
    If you have any difficulty going over the side seams (because of the several layers involved) on the first or second row of stitching, use the hand wheel to stitch over them slowly, adjusting the hem as you go.
    Another tip: Sometimes it is difficult to begin sewing the second row of stitching by starting at the edge of the shirt front, and then backstitching to secure the stitching, because of the several layers of fabric at that point (the button plackets). One way around this is to start stitching about 3/4" inside from the edge, sewing 4-5 stitches. Then, leaving the needle down in the fabric, lift the presser foot and rotate the shirt 180 degrees, let down the presser foot, then stitch to the end - edge of the shirt front. Then leaving the needle down again, raise the presser foot, rotate the fabric 180 degrees again, lower the presser foot and then continue on your way sewing the hem. You can do this at the end as well, if it seems necessary. It is one way to deal with difficult starts and ends due to several layers of fabric, and working in a difficult spot at the same time, where you want to get a nice finish. Using the hand wheel in this situation helps as well, allowing one to stitch more slowly, giving better control.

Now all I need to do is find a video in embroidering on the chiffon (machine embroidery that is), thank you again & I have just subscribed to you as well. Cheers & have a great day... • @louisemacadam9904
      @louisemacadam9904  8 років тому

      +Regina Doyle Thanks for the comment! If you have to make square corners on the scarves... I made another video on doing that. See here the link: ua-cam.com/video/im6ciixomGU/v-deo.html You may have already seen it...it is the same idea as on this video but with attention to the corners and how to handle that little challenge. As for embroidery, I haven't done any embroidery on chiffon, by machine. I have done it working with satin or other heavier fabrics. I have used spray starch so as to make the fabric more stiff - this does help. As well, I have used a paper backing under the fabric to be embroidered - I either pinned the fabric to the paper or used a paper that ironed on, and can be easily removed afterwards without leaving a residue. The only problem with paper is having to remove it from under the stitching.....when you have completed your embroidery. Maybe you can also use an embroidery hoop to keep the fabric stretched and taut...I haven't done this. Good luck!

    I have learned a lot! Thank you for sharing your talent with us! I am considering repurposing and incorporating my old prom dress skirt into a wedding dress. The dance partner remains the same (even after 19 years)! The dress has a circle skirt of chiffon with a sequined halter-top. I don't plan to use the top as it has yellowed over the years. Without you (and your "darling"), this would likely be a lot more tedious than it had to be. Thanks for the tips! Wish me luck! :)

    First of all, this is the Quickest, Neatest and Thinnest hem ever, so grateful for the careful and clear instructions on hemming. I do have one comment on the marking, though. It doesn’t work. I hemmed according to your marking instructions, then put on my bridesmaids dress only to realize that once my body was inside the dress, it somehow pulled the chiffon overlay two inches higher than my satin underlayer. Luckily it only happened to my dress and I will have to try and hide the mistake at the wedding. I was able to have two other bridesmaids try on their dresses when I was marking the chiffon overlay for the hem, and their dresses turned out great. But measuring Address while it is on a hanger only does not work.

    • @louisemacadam9904
      @louisemacadam9904  5 років тому

      Thanks for the comments! Very pleased to know the sewing method worked well. About marking the hem for the chiffon: I do usually mark the chiffon at the same time as I mark the satin underdress. Sometimes it is difficult to do this due to the style of the dress - especially the style of dress as seen in the video, with a long train. It can also be difficult if the dress is a lot too long, or if the chiffon layer is a lot more full than the underdress. Once I have creased the hem length of all the layers by pressing, and hemmed the lining and underdress, I then hang the dress up as seen in the video and pin the side and back seams of the chiffon to the underdress as shown in the video. Then I check to see if the crease of the chiffon is the right length all around. This can take a lot of checking and adjusting, especially if the chiffon is a lot fuller than the underdress. One has to estimate how the chiffon will hang all around. Fitting the dress again as you do, to measure/check the chiffon length is certainly good, to verify the length, especially with the pressed crease there as a guide. If I have any fears of the chiffon being too short, I will allow a bit extra length - I can always make it shorter if I have to! It is very disconcerting to end up with the chiffon being too short....! Can you shorten the satin layer a bit to hide the problem? When fitting a dress, make sure all the layers are pulled down and hanging smoothly and correctly.

      It helps to do a practice run or two first, using the excess part of the chiffon that you know you will be cutting off - if there is enough length to allow you to do this. Or if you have some similar chiffon, or fabric, you can use it to practice on, before you start on the "real" job!

      Thanks for the comment! It depends on the style of dress and what the client is looking for. If the train is okay - the client likes it as it is - I would taper the new hem into the original hem. I would unstitch 3-4" of the original hem and press the hemline to make a smooth transition.

    • @louisemacadam9904
      @louisemacadam9904  8 років тому

      +Teresa Matteson Sorry for the delay in replying! - I have been very busy, and our Internet has been very erratic.
      To join to the original hem, I undo a few inches of the stitching of the original hem, and open it out, noting the crease that marks the length. Then I line up the crease of the new hem length to the crease of the opened out original hem, and then press lightly with the iron so that I have a smooth transition from the new hem crease to the original hem crease. When you sew the first line of stitching, stop an inch or two before you arrive at the original hem portion, where you can no longer easily form the fold (as you do for the first round). Then trim away the excess hem allowance as is done in the video. Then use the iron to lightly press again the join area, to make the transition smooth. Then do the second round of stitching. When you approach the original hem portion, finger fold it in place, stitch slowly, and adjust the fabric as needed, lifting and lowering the presser foot to help ease the join area through smoothly. I hope this helps. If I get the chance, I will do a video on this, as you request! Not sure when though!

    chiffon and sheer fabrics can scare ppl form hemming. I was taught to use tissue paper underneath the fabric so it doesn't catch in the plate underneath. It works and tears off nicely. Also, as irons can get hot on their own at times ya never know, I use a press cloth its see thru actually like a mesh screening and helps prevent a shine on silks or melts or burning. Even tho one has the right setting this is a preventative measure to protect. thanks for sharing.

    • @louisemacadam9904
      @louisemacadam9904  5 років тому

      Thank you for the comments! Interesting what you say about using tissue paper underneath - good to keep in mind. Also a press cloth - I do use one at times especially for pressing hems on good dress pants - works very well. It is very true that the temperature on an iron can vary too much, especially if left standing for a few minutes. I hold it plate side down, passing it back and forth a few times on the ironing surface for a few seconds to cool it down before using it, to prevent nasty surprises, when I first apply the iron to the fabric. I also use a damp press cloth when I need to press out stubborn creases - this works quite well, and is helpful to prevent damage to the fabric.

    Thank you my dear !Need to short a evening dress and I am going to follow your direction .I am afraid of when I start the seam ,the fabric get stuck in the presser foot .Usually my machine eats de fabric as starting .
    👏👏👏💐💐💐Many blessings .

    • @louisemacadam9904
      @louisemacadam9904  2 роки тому

      Thank you for the comment! It may help for starting with the machine, to begin a little further in from the edge of the fabric. Hold the fabric tightly in front and behind the presser foot, as you begin. Then you can reverse two or three stitches and then go forward again, slowly, lifting the presser foot as needed if the fabric gets caught. Sometimes instead of reversing, I turn the fabric 180 degrees and then stitch two or three stitches, then turn the fabric back 180 degrees. This helps when the fabric is likely to get caught in the machine when you begin - in the case of chiffon, light weight fabrics or knits etc. Practice on a sample piece - maybe a piece you cut off when you shorten the dress. Good luck!
