you are like me with a timelapse, I always look for the small details. Something about them I love and they work so well with the stars and nightskies. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Well done, remembering that gravel is cheaper then concrete so spending your time on the base pays off. Excellent job, looking forward to the next instalment of “cloud magnet construction”
Cloud magnet construction lol. You are totally right on that Woody. I have just concentrated on making a really good firm base. Looking forward to start the building soon.
Hi Pat. Thats very kind of you to say mate. I am very pleased so far and its a real dream build for me. Glad you are enjoying the videos, i am really enjoying the project
@Astrobloke thanks for impressive videos. The steps are well explained, but I don't understand what are you expecting to happen when you put concrete on top of the compressed lower layer and then take the wooden sides off. In my opinion the compressed layer will start slowly to disintegrate and in some time the top concrete layer will be hanging in air. I'm afraid of this step, so I'm writing as soon as I could to possibly prevent this from happening. I hope I'm wrong though :) Thanks again for nice videos and good luck with the build! Pavel
Hi Pavel and thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. If it was left as it is then that would be a problem but once the shuttering is removed any exposed rubble is going to be covered as I am going to render the sides. Then we have more earth to backfill to the slab further so the compacted layer is below ground level to prevent this happening. The compacted type one is a surprisingly strong sub base however but I appreciate your observation and looking out for a potential problems. Glenn
@@Astrobloke Thank you Glenn, that would be extremely pitty to make such a simple mistake in otherwise well prepared and constructed observatory. I’m glad you thought this through ;) I am going to start my build this year as well, so I keep thinking about it and your series is a good inspiration to me. Good luck and take care ;)
Thanks Andy. When this is all complete I am considering a Todmorden pier at the top end of the garden as I have an unobstructed view to the south there.
Hi Glen, where did you get your tubes for your pillars? I don't seem to get anything longer than a metre? Oh the Dunster kit arrived yesterday, the build begins :-)
Hi Stewart, if you look in the description of this video there is a link to where I bought them from, ua-cam.com/video/KPBTP9BkJkg/v-deo.htmlsi=6Xz0gSnXvcILM9h6 Thats excellent it has arrived. Good luck with the build.
Mate, this build is next-level!! You’ve thought of everything, can’t wait to see it progress. A lot of hard work now will save a lot of headaches later, full credit to you 👍
Thank you so much. It is a lot of work but as you say will prevent future problems. I actually love a project like this, the only but I don’t like is the end because its all done
It's coming along nicely Glenn bet your happy that you found someone that can pump the cement up to your base , because if you had barrow it would of been a really pain mate
I have to say, You are doing this build the proper way, taking all the small precautions, absolute professional job. Im really grateful you are documenting this so I have a standard to follow. Only problem is, when its done your wife will never see you again...lol Great work tho mate! Cant wait to see its completion, and naming ceremony...
Thank you for the kind comments. Trying to make sure its done well as I want it to last. The wife has expressed concern over me moving out lol. I’ve made a promise to spend cloudy nights in the house
Thanks Siegfried for following. Trying to arrange the concrete pour next which is taking some planning, Need at least 4 of us available at the same time and for the company with the cement pump to be free oh and some suitable weather. Hopefully in next week or 2
@@Astrobloke yes absolutely, the weather can be a serious dealbreaker. Here in Belgium the weather has been and will be very bad, hope you will have better weather when concrete has to be done
looking great man this series inspired me to rebuild my Astro shed. though had to do it on a massive budget so re-using old wood made a 1.1m square in garden and poured concrete in it. didn't know about the vapour barrier thing tho.. i imagine i can just put a sheet ontop of the concrete under where my tripod will sit?
Hi Sean. Nice one. Damp rising through concrete will vary greatly depending on subsoil conditions etc and you may get none. I use those foam like jigsaw squares for floor. Waterproof and soft so should you drop something a lot more forgiving than concrete.
Excellent work Glenn, I’ll be over to inspect it all next week mate😀 I’m looking forward to the pour, it’ll be hard work but well worth it👍 Clear skies!
So good to be able to seer the obsy build step by step. Love the Movie action stills on the sparks flying. And being so big, it should make for a very comfortable "dog box" when you are in trouble with the other half 😂
Its coming along Logan. Making it comfy as you never know when you may next be in trouble, shit got a new scope being delivered Monday. Better get the doghouse built
HI Rob and thank you for watching and commenting. I thought about a lot of different ways but decided to keep with a wooden frame structure as its is easier to adapt and make changes in the future,
Man I hope your back is feeling ok after all that moving dirt and rock around. Mine hurt just watching 😉 Looks great! Can’t wait to see the slab laid down. I’m surprised that insulation and two plastic sheets are sufficient to dampen vibrations. I was thinking that I would need a 1-2 cm rubber type pad all around the pier base, but this would be a whole lot easier.
I had a few soaks in a bath with Epsom salts for my aching muscles. Its coming along nicely. it leaves a small gap no more that 2-3cm but its enough to stop any vibrations transferring from the main slab the the pier blocks and has been tried and tested. Its inexpensive and quick and easy to do. I will be in a separate building while imaging so this is all that's really needed. Thanks for watching and commenting, clear skies
Is it going to slab on ground or floor above ground? I noticed you don't have any thickening beams in the edge which would normally have a layer of F11 trench mesh, say 300mm deep to strengthen up the edge. I am a retired builder and finished my observatory about 6 months ago.
Not 100% sure what you meant but but the slab is just a base for office and obsy to be built on, its just a base and not making the floors of either structure.
@@Astrobloke it'll be interesting how you build it. My father-in-law told me building methods were "a little" different in England, so we'll see as you progress. Mine is on stumps with a ramp for access.

@@messianicmuse I bet you get great seeing being up high? I have a friend in Cheltenham so have been there a few times. We had a really cold winter this year but even then only -6C and no snow which helps with roll off roof design.
