I Built A New Bigger Roll Off Roof Observatory

  • I ended up building a new roll off roof observatory. It took me about 1 month and a couple of weeks to complete. I ended up keeping the original wood deck and floor that I built 2 years ago. I wanted to have just a little bit more space around the telescope and that basically motivated me to start the build process. That was my 1st time doing roof shingles and vinyl siding. Lucky I already had a 8 gallon air compressor and few nail guns that made that part go fast. Everything else sort of fell into place as I basically made it all up as I went along. No plans were used.

Great job! I’m new in the hobby - mainly AP. Currently I’m just using a Telegizmos 365 cover on my 4” refractor, but planning to build a Todmorden pier at my best viewing spot. Who knows? Maybe I’ll decide to build a roll off shed after doing this for a year. Thanks for the inspiration.

@@AnthonySchmitt I started AP in 2016 & for years I would always bring my gear outside & back in the next morning & was cool with it & a couple years ago I got the itch to keep it in a small roll off roof shed. I then built that rubber made shed that I have a couple of videos on it & it was excellent!!! Now I got the itch to build something little bit bigger but not by much & so far it’s working out really good!! 😊

Can you give me the info on your "all-sky" camera?

Sure that security camera is a WYZE pan v3. Seems to be working well & is under $40. For me I’m just looking to see if there are clouds whenever I access it.

Exactly the way I'll be using it. I already have surveillance cameras. Thanks.

You know I have roughly the same gear you have and have just completed a cement pier install and am about to build the shed and have been struggling with size but looking at yours...that's probably exactly the size I want. Some people seem to build them so that they can live in them but really, if you have all the automation dialed-in, I would rarely need to be inside with the rig for any length of time then get my butt back into the house to remote run it. Thanks for the video and all the great tweaks.

That was very inspiring. If my next home has any decent views of the sky I will try to do something similar.

Yea , I work with one of your child hood friends ..Willie Wallace , he told me about your channel because I love astronomy too. I plan on purchasing a Nexstar 8se and was wondering which ZWO camera will give me the best images as of 2024?

    • @deejaybustab

Ok cool yeah we go way back. Basically all ZWO cameras will give a great image but all depends if you want to go with 1 shot color cameras or with mono cameras. It will take time to get a decent image when 1st starting out because you will need to learn how to use the gear & how to process the images. It can get overwhelming in the beginning & very complicated from reading post on it all. If you go mono you will need filters for each channel of color & narrow band you need to shoot. For 1 shot color cameras you will still need some type of filter for light pollution or UV IR blocking. I have several ZWO cameras & use a certain one for whatever type of targets im shooting. If you talk to the guys at highpoint scientific they can recommend & really help with deciding on what to get but as you will get to know, this hobby will get really expensive really fast lol!! The cameras I use now are the ZWO ASI1600mm, ASI533mc & the asi224mc. Lots of people are using some ZWO cameras that are way more expensive than what I am using because they have deeper pockets lol

@@deejaybustab Okay , yea I'm doing my research now on what would work for me . At the current time there are no planets in the visible sky . Let me ask you do I need a mount to view M51 or can I just use the mount that comes with the 8se

Awesome - I have the rubbermaid shed and currently automating it with a linear actuator but my new mount is too tall so i was going to attach the original rubbermaid roof to 2x4s and rails and attach the same tooth gear motor.

@@area51xi Thanks!! I had to do something similar to that when I modified my rubber maid shed. It worked & I ended up making this shed because I needed just a little bit more space other than that the rubber maid shed was perfect.

@@deejaybustab Yeah I hear you. I need to lift the roof on mine about 4 inches and make it roll off 75% of the way. That will give me enough room for a much larger mount and scope.

@@deejaybustab - been on my wish list for a long time. Problem I have is I live in a hurricane area. One storm and it may be gone. Makes construction technique details very important.
