These are the sets I remember fondly. They may have some design flaws, but they actually had soul and character to them. As the series progressed, the sets had more and more special pieces to the point of entire characters being comprised almost purely of specially caste parts that could serve little purpose outside their original set. They became less of "Complex building experiences" and more of "Action figure: Some assembly required". Really wish the revival of Bionicle had gone back to its roots, but I think Hero factory killed that chance
+Cole Jenkins (The Commander) Nice to hear these sentiments - I very much agree with the thought that the older sets had soul and character. It seems there was a bit of an attempt to get something similar with the 2015 Toa, but it didn't work that well. Personally I feel that 2001-04 were the years when the characters had the most visual character
Jim F Whaaaat? The 2015 sets are some of the most character-imbued waves out there! For once, the Toa don't look like multicolored copies of each other; they look like actual characters! Look at their body structures, their weapons, their armor placement. There's so much communicated there. Their builds aren't just boring wave-one Hero Factory constructions either- compare how simple a 2001 Toa is to the complex gear functions and frame of 2015 Onua. I have fond memories of the 2001 Toa too, but the 2015 FIGURES are so much better. The story and supplemental material of G2 can't even compare to G1 though, it's so...basic.

Hey, Rollout. First time commenting on a video and I'd like to say I thoroughly enjoy your reviews. They're fun and informative, but what I really love about them are your storytelling segments. This and the Boxor review are, to me, prime examples of how you recreate key scenes from that year and I love how you managed to articulate the Toa's necks to make them more dynamic. It always puts me in a mood to break out what 2001-2003 sets I have and start building. Sorry for such a long comment, but I just wanted to voice my thoughts here. =)

One of the Best Bionicles ever made, although its not a charater, but a suit of armour, a suit that although gives amazing powers to those who wear it, it haves a very dark secret..... Its drains the elemental powers of the Toa. If the Toa Mata had continued to use the Exo-Toa agaisnt the Bahrag, a crushing defeat would be evident for the Toa. Besides that inconvenient, Its a GREAT set, and enjoyed to build him for 2 days. One of the best experiences I ever had!
What? When they descend into the nest, Onua had saved Lewa and he wasn't wearing the Krana anymore. If you're referring to the voices in his head, that's because he had been controlled by the Queens for so long before then that they were still able to telepathically communicate with him. By then however, he was no longer under their control.
***** OOOHHHH. Oops. Must have read it wrong. I read the books from '03, so I got the Abridged version. The way it was written there sounded like he was still under control.
Wait Bohrok came from underground and the Toa fought the queens using Exo Toa, a.k.a. giant mechs. Then, in 2014, monster thingies (that I don't know the name of) came from underground and was fought with giant mechs. Was Hero Factory: Invasion from Below just a rehatch of the Bohrok stuff?
Sets like these are why I wish Lego just did a remaster of Bionicle, not a reboot. Imagine getting to fix some of the mistakes, like making the story difficult to follow or having toys that didn't live up to the hype. Lego even figured out how to get bricks to work in constraction, so they could easily recreate the series with bricks and use Bionicle as an excuse to get more unique brick molds for texturing on other builds. Lego has also really stepped up their game regarding their builds, meaning new and old fans can just let themselves be swept up in the whimsy again. The early years of Bionicle were shackled to the Technic theme, and the limitations show. Eliminating that flaw basically solves all of the problems with early builds. Literally only the Bohrok truly benefitted from being part of the Technic theme, and I feel like Lego could even get away with minimal changes; the Bohrok are literally a bunch of automated drones, so of course they are more mechanical than everything else.
Well i would like to see something similar for 2015 sets and i think that ther could be 2 versions (speciall one for Onua with hiss much wider and shorter body construction) or something like addaptation system, that allows to change the shape of armor, depending on user's figure. well probably LEGOwon't make it themselfs, so probably people playing with custom modeling will think something out.
I've been seeing people do Toa builds in other colors, say a Red Kopaka for example. Wonder how difficult it'd be to do that with the Exo-Toa, make a set of six that actually match the Toa piloting them.
Oh man, I used to own that lego. I had so much fun playing it. Breaking it down and building it again. I even which a few parts to make it cooler. Adding some red or blue depending which Toa I use
Heyo IX, around 10:40 to get the front locking mechanism to actually lock on its own, why don't you try to put the rubber band through the pin hole on the orange piecedoes that work?
One of the biggest advantages of ccbs in my opinion is how much greater a degree of possibility you can get when building a figure, due to how many ball joints are used in the bone pieces. Bearing that in mind, I personally think it's a bit of a shame that they still never produced any official Bionicle sets with waist articulation
I feel I should mention... Later on (like 2006 or so, I think) it was revealed that the Exo-Toa were designed and used by the Brotherhood of Makuta. It would make complete sense for Teridax to have disabled the AI of these six and left them there planning on the Toa trying and failing to use them to defeat the Bahrag.
I remember wanting this set so bad. And when I managed to get one, I was so extatic I completely overlooked its downsides, ie the lack of articulation. Also, having no Rahi or Borhok queen, the slapping arm was kind of awkward. Yet this was the single most awesome set I ever had (it's a mech!!!).
Wait, I just realized a plot hole: the the bohrok existed to cleanse mata nui in preparation for his Awakening, wouldn't that mean the great beings would have to know in advance that teridax would betray him?
Nah. Mata Nui would observe other planets by camouflaging itself as well, and it was up to the Bohrok to clean any of that camouflage away in all situations. When the GSR crashes into Aqua Magna and its face is exposed above the water, that protocol still functions and the island is formed. Makuta releases the Bohrok pre-maturely, and for them it's just another job.
RolloutReviews Fair enough, that works I suppose. And I suppose all the other things the Nuva did were just a failsafe plan if the GSR died. Though I wonder how the mask of life returned to Voya nui from the codrex after the first time it was used?
The Codrex is just for jump-starting the robot awake, and the Mask of Life isn't technically required. To heal Mata Nui, you only need to dawn the Ignika within Karda Nui. Before the Great Cataclysm, Voya Nui was part of the Southern Continent inside the GSR's chest, which is located right above Karda Nui (like how Metru is below Mata). Basically, the Chambers of Life lead right to the core of the universe, so it wasn't too hard for Jovan's team to return the mask afterward.
RolloutReviews Ah, got my ordering mixed up, forgot Jovan's team happened before the great cataclysm. It feels good to talk about the lore again, thanks!
My main problem with the Exo-Toa is that it's too damn small in my opinion for when the Toa are piloting them. I know they were designed for various reasons, guarding the Makuta's Destral Fortress, defend against a possible premature release of the Bohrok, or an army. Yet for when the Toa get inside them, I can't help but think it should be more like one of the Iron Man suits which in terms of a set would be ludicrously expensive but eh.
If the boxor was the baby mech. This is the grand-daddy of all mechs!. Kind of wished they re-released this with an attachment for the Boxor to cling onto it or maybe support for the Boxor. Imagine a robot in a mech, inside another mech!
Honestly, Bionicle sets with no neck articulation really don't bug me. As long as their eyes are translucent, you can kind of position them just right so the light makes it look like their eyes are slanted, looking off to the side. This is what I do with a couple of the Transformers I have on my shelf, and what I plan to do when my LBX Hunter gets in.
I think the orange accents make this particular exo-toa designated for Tahu. You could probably pretty easily change those parts out to match it to another Toa, though.
I would of loved an "Ultimate BattlePack" of sorts as a kid with these, with the set coming with one suit along with it's Toa rider, and perhaps a special collection of Golden Masks to go along with the Toa, in context with their appearance in the comic?
do you think you could do a video of putting some of the newer toa and matoran in a boxer/exo toa? it would be extremely strange looking but could also be pretty funny and cool to see

I loved the Exo-Toa but never bought it myself. I did have enough other sets to replicate it quite closely with off-colour parts.
at least now for hero factory, they made the heroes small to fit inside a cockpit
Never could have thought that Bionicle could be played like Titanfall
This was my first Bionicle Titan set. Unfortunately I have lost it over the years. I definitely need to reaquire it.
Given how the toa had access to their masks, the thrusters could be used for proper flight using their Mirus.
If the boxor was the baby mech. This is the grand-daddy of all mechs!.
Kind of wished they re-released this with an attachment for the Boxor to cling onto it or maybe support for the Boxor. Imagine a robot in a mech, inside another mech!
Wow
A very detailed review, this is
Yoda?
Nice Pacific Rim reference in the description
Honestly, Bionicle sets with no neck articulation really don't bug me. As long as their eyes are translucent, you can kind of position them just right so the light makes it look like their eyes are slanted, looking off to the side. This is what I do with a couple of the Transformers I have on my shelf, and what I plan to do when my LBX Hunter gets in.
15:08 15:48 Lmao I appreciate your sense of visual humour
I think the orange accents make this particular exo-toa designated for Tahu. You could probably pretty easily change those parts out to match it to another Toa, though.
I would of loved an "Ultimate BattlePack" of sorts as a kid with these, with the set coming with one suit along with it's Toa rider, and perhaps a special collection of Golden Masks to go along with the Toa, in context with their appearance in the comic?
Love those poses lol
I kinda want to get this set, but I'm thinking about making a moc of this (for extra posability and stuff :P)
do you think you could do a video of putting some of the newer toa and matoran in a boxer/exo toa? it would be extremely strange looking but could also be pretty funny and cool to see
8:43 this could be used to combat the Queens by grabbing the stomach piece and pulling it out.
Someone didn't watch the whole video before commenting. ;-)
okay.
so the exo-toa disembowled ghadok
15:08 Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewd!!!
Though I feel very bad Pohatu... One like and you can join the group hug for him.
do you think that LEGO would make the exo toa in G2? That'd be amazing!
I just noticed the Pacific Rimshot on the description
