The promo images had a big impact on kid-me, I wanted to get the set so much. It used to be my Bionicle holy grail. I've had them for years now but I sometimes still can't believe it. That crude gear function and dubious play feature are annoying, but I agree, the models look impressive so I don't mind these. Although it always sucks when a toy can get damaged by using it as intended -- the fragile socket pieces from the later years are inexcusable, and I can't believe how many expensive Transformers figs I've broken only because the plastic was weak or the design was wack. At least LEGO's stuff is easy to replace.
Toy/figurine companies skimping out on materials is the worst. There's the green sockets we know and love to hate from the later years of BIONICLE. It's also happened in Warhammer 40k, in which at some point the models started being made with a type of plastic resin that caused lines and bubbles that were not only more noticeable than before, but more difficult to remove by hand. And I'm sure it's happened in many of brands of figurines.
It's a shame white axels and pegs never got molded after this set was retired, I would've love to see them appear in more sets. As for the queens fighting each other, I imagine it's a scene from a comedic fanfiction about them arguing over something and duking it out later.
This review was actually my introduction to the set. I saw the pictures from the Official Guide to Bionicle, but i always assumed that was just an artist's rendering. After watching this video, I found the two queens for $50 on eBay. So uh, thanks rollout.
Man I must've scored then! I got them on eBay for $60! They're in excellent condition and no damage to any pieces as far as I can tell, but one white rubber band is missing from the two. Do you know if rubber bands are available on brick link?
I really like the Bahrag. Just a suggestion for you personally, or anyone who has spare white Onua claws, whenever you want to play with them why not swap the teeth to the chewed up ones? They could get worse but the nice ones wont.
+Cuphead5998 that would be the worst because 1.there isn't any new pieces except for the ka shield and most of the pieces are recolors 2.they could not be selling since they're just the same except in silver
After 4 years of searching for this set, I found it for only €20. Sadly, the very long flextubes were missing, but maaaan i’m happy that i now have leaders for my *flock* of Bohrok
i was really lucky and found this set at a comic store for $50! i love the bahrag and just rebuilt them both yesterday. it's so nice to have my favorite set back together
Also, nice little toy speech at the end. Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I recently bought a real grade model kit and my friend thinks I'm crazy for playing with it.
Imagine the Bahrag fighting any (or all) of the Makuta. Judging from the fact that they are INVULNERABLE when next to each other, while also capable of incredible destructive power, I think it's safe to say that the Queens would come out of that conflict victorious.
syweb2 I wouldn't be so sure about that, since the Makuta had a larger array of powers, among them invulnerability, and outnumbered them. But the Bahrag definitely are powerful.
In '01, yes. But the Bahrag created the illusions encountered in the Bohrok nest in '02. They also created illusions to distract Onua and Pohatu during their fight with the Toa.
***** In a few of the books during Bohrok-Kal saga, the Toa figured out they were the work of Makuta when they encountered similar illusions even though the queens were trapped in their protodermis seal.
There were only two books in the Kal saga, but I get your point. Yes, at the beginning of '03 Makuta messed with them a little more. But it was made very clear in the '02 comics that the Bahrag are fully capable of producing illusions themselves.
***** I looked on BS01; you're right. I could've sworn that there was a line where one of the Nuva said something like, "we had thought they were the work of the Bahrag, but they were the work of Makuta," or some other line where they realized it was Teridax.
Best Bionicle Bahrag review ever made!!! I recommend to other users not even try to make their own, including myself, because this review is so complete and well done, that it is no necessary to have more vids on youtube. Exelent review!!! I love it!!!
For me the first wave of Bionicle will always be my favorite purely for how unique the Rahi were as enemies, the Bohrock queens certainly hearken back to that unique and eclectic set design. Its certainly refreshing after having an entire wave of the same old bug balls as sets.
I don’t recommend it, but the pieces that the set has allows us to create two bohrocks (more or less). The only issue I see is the lack of limbs and a gear function.
I had this set for my 8th birthday and I have pretty much never been aware of the second playfiture and always called them dragons :) P.S. If you had the old and already damaged theeth pieces, why didn't you use them to demonstrate the playfiture? Is there another piece that could be damaged by this?
Hey IX how much do the teeth fray? Is it possible that you have a picture? I'm planning on getting this awesome set, and although I don't want to hurt the condition, the function looks very fun. I'd be willing do it if the damage isn't too bad.
Figured, since you asked me directly, I'd tell you that I've run into a little bit of a delay because I found out my red Kanohi Hau somehow got a big scratch on it in storage. I wanna get that replaced before I shoot comparison shots. I suppose I'll finish writing up a script for Ikir over the next few days while I wait for that to arrive. ;-)
the manas have a similar disengage function the "eyes" of the manas are toa mata heads with generic masks on them the manas are basically boxing crabs when one gets punched in the eye the mask falls off and a lever gets knocked down under the mana preventing it from driving
You forgot to say that the function itself relies too much on the rubberbands, meaning that if your green rubberbands are loose, the removal of the belly piece won't cause the long vertical assembly to slide up and block the function as intended. Did you experience that problem or is it just me?
***** Uh ok, must be mine then. Doesn't matter though, this set has pretty much gained the "Collector's Relic status", so playfeatures aren't really the main concern... gotta keep it on the shelf ahahah.

Combustiblemonguy Having never owned these figures and only working off of these reviews, I thought the same as you. I guess the idea is the mouth is FULL of things for the belly piece to get hooked on, even the "tongue".
I got a set of these in a goodwill bionicle lot and built them only to completely destroy them to build new things. Here's another thing for everyone to fear over since im sure not everyone died over that one sentence. I ALSO got my hands on the original makuta combiner set in box and once more mixed all the pieces amongst my hundreds of pieces because I tore them apart to make things again. This was a really great, in depth review, however it seems as though you built the set wrong. I don't own the set from watching other reviews the function seems to work somewhat differently. for example, in some other reviews the bahrag are seen using their function without having to manually reset and even using the function in slow motion without it jamming. I think the set info somewhere said that the Queens always used to "bite" and fight eachother a bit, but yeah this was pretty much a 2001 like set, wonder if it also existed before with the "Voodoo Heads" line, maybe not but the Boxor did. Does Suck that it doesn't fully work out and DAMAGES the figure itself... wonder if this set was rushed and if the Exo Toa was a prototype set(looking at the colors and that free ball joint, it does feel like it), wouldn't be surprised. The other Lego set that I've found(but don't own) to be prototype like is the Exo Force Combat Crawler X2. I do agree and it drags my mood down as well, wouldn't want to have parts wear out like that :/ Also given the price(they were kinda expensive back there but I wasn't into Bionicle at that time) I guess it's something I wouldn't own or only get late when collecting. If I do find them at a good price, I'll definitely get them and I love how you did the last part of the review, can understand the grinding gears part and for the claw "teeth" reason, I wouldn't want to play with them either, want to keep everything in good condition.
Nah. That was always their purpose. _"Mata Nui will be as it was in the before-time. Mata Nui will be restored at last"_ was written in a comic as early as April of 2002, and the Bahrag quotes that I reference in this review are from a novel published in 2003.

They still sit inside a hollow chair of mine (without any arm- or backrest). I should probably dust them off sometimes... or, as they would say, clean it all 😂.
When you remember that the lifeforms of the Bionicle world are mostly mechanical, the engine block like section makes more sense.
