    Most of you commenters don't know that most homeowners want the cheapest price they can get. This pad is fine to park a RV on. It's not a road. I have installed many like this and they have lasted many years. I also compact when the owner wants to pay for it. Right or wrong the person paying the bill sets the quality of work. Just make sure they know up front how you will have to do the job for the price he wants to pay.

      You’re not in the buisness or you just haven’t had the headache or have been sued. The homeowner doesn’t know shit about how to grade a pad out. Otherwise they would do it. Bid the job for what it costs to get it done right otherwise 900 dollars isn’t work the headache it could bring if he blows out the walls.

    I secure my railroad ties to the ground by drilling a 1/2" hole through em and driving 2-3 feet of rebar into the ground. Not sure its completely necessary, but it makes me feel better about it!

    Just a friendly tip from someone that builds highways and driveways......you should ALWAYS remove the top soil down to the sub base before placing gravel.....reading your comments, money was an issue. A good cost effective way would be to remove the top soil and place it on the back side of the retaining wall to help support it. You then have a better product and no removal costs. As others have stated placing on grass like that it will never set up right and grass will grow through....will also be very sloppy when it rains......looked good tho!

      the thing about that is sometimes you dont know whats under the dirt, especially in residential homes. theres always those knuckle draggers that bury a line like 2 inches into the ground and the homeowner ends up footing the bill. i personally would have removed about 6 inches of topsoil added #3 crushed stone and then filled the rest up with that smaller stuff. that job he did there looks like that fabric will be poking through in no time. just my opinion i know it dont mean jack but it makes good banter.

      Agreed that topsoil and sod under rr ties will compact at least a couple inches. But on that slope probably won’t fail. It just means the customer is getting what they are paying for - ie it won’t look as nice in a couple years.

I am trying to figure out how to make my own additional parking pad for visitors on the side of my driveway, but it has grass, dirt and rocks and is sloping downwards. Jason Peters on was on the money. You should have placed pin ties through the sleepers as you can see they pushed out at the bottom with the forward pressure. If he comes in with his big rig, too fast and sudden stops at the bottom, it's gonna push the whole darn thing out.

    Use 57 stone at the bottom (spaghetti strainer for drainage) then a medium size crush and run with lye (it's will compact and the lye is a weed barrier) then last 2-3 inches a stone dust (easy grading for level and it will provide great compaction and even better weed barrier) Thanks!

  • @yingpin18
    @yingpin18 5 років тому +3

    I don't disagree that this will work for what you need. I am looking at doing something similar for a camper, hence how I ended up here. Lots of research to be done I think. I did notice at 9:08 the bobcat pushed/compacted the gravel towards the back pushing the railroad ties out....

    • @cameronward7137
      @cameronward7137  5 років тому

      yingpin18 yes UA-cam has made me well aware that it pushed the ties out lol. It was because the rock was all loose and I was twisting the machine around. Once that rock settles in it compacts like concrete. The heaviest thing that rock will ever see is my machine the day It was spread. I have spoken to the owner recently and he says everything is fine and he is happy with the work I did.

      those railroad ties won't last give it a bit of time and they won't be straight and if you were going to put the cloth down you should have did it the whole stretch of the gravel especially since you did it on top of topsoil. Small plate Packer wouldn't hurt either. Probably would have shifted your railroad ties out farther if you had packed it though

      I did my parking pad the same way, 26 tons of 3/4". I kept packing it with the bobcat, with a full bucket of gravel in it. I didn't need cross ties, where the gravel met the grass I kept running over it so my mower would not catch the gravels. So far it's holding up good.. Sprayed roundup on it one time so far.

    I agree with "jsw 98", and if you don't know what you are doing either research how it is supposed to be done Correctly or don't take the job. Buy the correct length level a 4' would be the minimum length and place it in the correct position, on it's narrow side. Don't forget about compacting the stone with a gas powered tamper as the loose stone will pretty quickly move around, and also was away on that slope. I would never use railroad ties as they are soaked in "creasote" which is a cancer causing agent which is why the railroads aren't using them any more. The quality or lack thereof speaks volumes to anyone who sees the work you have done, and either brings in new business or drives them away. This reflects heavily on your work ethic good or bad. Good luck in the future.

      Part of your job is to save the customer and steer them into the outcome. That would have been stripping down to undisturbed soil, staking and stabilize the RR ties, shooting grade, fixing the yard, since you wanted to lay out fabric do the entire job, call digrite for utility marking.
      You should be able explain to him the process and tell him why it will provide the best outcome, if he couldn't afford the extra $500 to $600 wait a few more weeks.
      With all that said about $50 in Rebar and landscape fabric would have made a huge difference. As soft as the yard was, a lawn roller would have fixed the ruts easily. Since you knew it was wet, he could have dumped in the street that would have saved the yard.
      Pro tip- For about $5 mark area then spray weed & grass killer on area a few days before.

      He’s going to learn when those blow out and best case scenario the home owner and him get in a tiff and possibly has him come out and fix it or even worse yet get taken to court because his trailer is on its side because the railroad ties were not properly secured. The customer doesn’t know shit. If they did they would do the job. Bid the customer what it cost to get the job done right. The 900 bucks isn’t worth the time and money if things go south. Atleast you used sub grade cloth, but the swale in the way back could have been an easy fix. Grade the pad and run a plate compactor over it. Secure those ties and you would have been able to thos this in a portfolio for future jobs.

    You made a mistake having all of the gravel dumped in one spot. I would have had the dump truck back up onto the ground cloth near the back boards. Then have him unlock the tailgate and start raising the dump bed. It would have been very easy to signal him to go forward slowly as the gravel came out. The dump truck could have done 2/3 to 3/4 of the spreading of the grave...at no additional cost to you. You would have saved time and wear & tear on your equipment by directing the dump truck forward. Please try this on a future gravel dump.

If you take on a job you have to do to go above and beyond !!! What's expected is to have it done the right way and if the customer doesn't know then you as a contractor needs to politely educate them on the right way. if they insist in doing something that's not good for the job at hand , then you should turn the job down . Determining the size of the camper this pad is a horrible idea. However, this guy may know that, but whatever the customer wants to pay for then that's what he gets. I would say this would be great for a pop up camper. This in fact would not be ideal for a larger pull behind, 5th wheel or RV. You would need to put fill dirt in, level it off, compact it good then lay 3in of gravel on top. Either way it looks nicely done it's just not going to last. So, oh well as long as you explained that to the customer and your name isn't tarnished then it's off to the next.

It should still be done right, if you are charging for a job it should be the best you can do no matter what it costs, and if it is a matter of cost then it should be quoted for, if the customer has a budget then you do whatever part of the job to cover the budget but NEVER EVER should you compromise quality. And finally a lot of the comments were COSTRUCTIVE criticism, the guy is trying to earn a buck by doing what he can,I appreciate that but if he's not sure how to do it correctly there are thousands of us out there who will give free expert advice, I would and do. The guy didn't do a shift job he just didn't do it to the best of what he probably is capable of, he didn't seem mentally imparted in anyway he seemed like a nice guy that just WANTED and THOUGHT he had done a top notch job, but didn't, I hope he learns and takes on board as it truly will help his business in the future.

    First and for most I’m not in this business but I’ve got tons of operator hours on skid steers, loaders,backhoes,tractors etc. I’ve spread probably a couple thousand tons of rock over the last decade or so along with thousands of hours of material handing in some form or fashion....I’m not a pro, but I’m not a diy guy..although the finish product looks good, I hate how it was done start to finish....and it’s going to last maybe one set of seasons...maybe...rain is going to wash, using it is going to wash, and just settling is going to wash...:this looked like a weekend warrior rented a skid steer and fixed himself a pad....your ties are not anchored you didn’t even bare minimum scrape the surface and you just dumped it in the yard..your using a damn digging bucket to spread rock I mean come on, atleast cut you a decent bed to lay the rock in so after the first gulley washer don’t send 100$ worth of rock to the neighbors...

      Takes 20 minutes to cut a bed this size then pile the topsoil at the back, but I assume this is what you get when you get up at 830 and go to work....either start using that bucket as it was intend and cut beds are get. Different bucket..

      Stfu... I went up there and looked at it the other day and the dude has a 12,000 lb fifth wheel camper now and it looks exactly the same. Nothing is washed away and no grass is growing in it and it’s been almost 2 years ago. Leave this to the professional. I have a picture I can sent to prove it if you’d like to send me your number. I’ve had hundreds of comments telling me how shitty this job is and it gets really old..especially when it’s perfectly fine to this day...

      Maybe I exaggerated a little bit on one set of seasons, maybe a couple of years, but definitely gonna start having issues after 2 years especially on the back...left corner where you started....you spend the money to build a pad with ties and dg it hope to god it last 10 years maybe after 5 you notice some wash but not before then

      I’m sure it’s hard for any legit business to get residential costumers in your area with those prices!
