The power of having 7 extremely creative and talented voice actors together, and in front of a camera with a goal of entertaining an audience can't be matched by regular people. So anything involving roleplay, such as a use of wish for a roleplay reason, will probably be the best you've ever seen.
Scanlan using his 9th level slot to stop Vecna from teleporting was legitimately him having to decide between risking the lives of countless others so his best friend would have a little more time and a chance to live past this fight, or ensuring this same friends death. To some, the choice might have been obvious. To Scanlan, it wasn't.

Bit late reply, not that I think he was thinking of it at the time but I recall long ago Scanlan hurting some bystanders to not hurt Vax and Vax telling him to let him be hurt instead of others next time. I always think of that when he had to make that choice again.
@@kolosmenus that was a maybe; Scanlan's 9th level made sure that Vecna stayed long enough for Grog and Percy to hurt Vecna so the banishment ritual would work.

It was a Wish in that sense, using the spell itself to create something he could not, but I still agree that he never made a 'selfish' wish. Especially because I think he created the simulacrum with the thought of fighting Vecna in mind. Simulacrums can cast everything that their original creator could *at the moment* of it's creation. Which means that Scanlan 2 had access to a 9th level spellslot and the Wish spell. I think Scanlan 2 was supposed to be a sort of 'expendable' spell battery- particularly for saving Vax in the end by not needing to use his own 9th level spell slot.

I think what’s funnier is that Allura has spent her entire life practicing arcane arts and even going on adventures. And has only managed to get to lvl 15. Meanwhile Scanlan went from lvl 1 to lvl 20 in the span of about 2 years

Important to remember though that Vox Machina and other player based adventuring parties do a lot more in a lot less time than most regular adventuring parties. In the Mighty Nine tails especially, the gang is jumping from long rest to long rest and hence leveling up very quickly. Though your point is still completely valid.
Oh absolutely. I think the thing that destroys me the most though is watching Sam just crumble and hide his face while Liam looks at him with so much love. It's actually the first clip I ever saw and it hit me so hard I watched the whole damn campaign
I have never seen Critical Role before, but holy shit that ending was god tier. That wasn't acting, in that moment, they were their characters, those were real emotions. You don't get any better than that
If you have never seen critical role before you may not know that many if not all have very successful Voice Acting careers, some that you may be familiar with is Laura Bailey, who voices Jaina Proudmoore from the Warcraft universe, as well as Matthew Mercer who has an incredible portfolio including characters like; Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan, Hit from Dragonball Super, Gangplank from League of Legends and many, many more. Conidering the whole cast have some kind of background in it, and that they've had plenty of time to find their group 'flow' means that despite the content being purely voiced with minor acted elements and figurines to help visualize, you have an incredibly compelling and immersive viewer experience.
Absolutely, as an actor myself I can attest that actors keep libraries of emotions on tap to turn on the waterworks or be cruel. It's just like pretending the floor is lava, but a bit more advanced.
The counterspell in the final battle is the only time I have seen sam get upset playing the game. He was my favorite character and he was playing "the worst race and class" in the game. It just shows that bards can be awesome.
Bards are great for their versatility. And proof of their use is shown by scanlan in the fight against vecna. The tiny little gnome bard was BY FAR the MVP of that battle against a literal god.
Both Liam and Matt allowed Scanlan's wish to work prior to the scene, Liam let us know that because Sam knew he wanted scanlan to do this wish, but he wanted to make sure both of them knew ahead of time
I’ve used Wish to Wish the BBEG could not use magic in ANY FORM until his “Soul” was returned to his body. He destroyed a nearby pot and we NUKED the defenseless soul
The final wish at the wedding, the D&D dice gods saw it before any of the players, Scanlan sacrificed his only chance of saving his friend and the dice gods smiled upon him, they allowed him to keep using wish until the scales of karma where in balance once more, Vax's last speach and time to speak to his friends... nay, his family. One last time. The story finally drawing to a close on a note where all could love and finally find peace

Wow. I'm new to the critical role story but seeing scanlan wish for vax to come back and to have that actually be his last wish made me break. What an excellent group of performers.
I like to legitimately think in using that counterspell, Vax realized what it meant. Vex and Keyleth on the other hand were the only ones with high enough perception to notice. Everyone else was simply too absorbed in a fight for their life and the realm to realize what this last chance cost them, just like everyone at the table.
Travis saw it. Perception is high. He didn’t know what it meant. Intelligence low. And his take on it was something happened and he needs to do Barbarian stuff. Insight check medium lol

I love how he builds up the spell as some kind of mythical thing, instead of just saying "it's wish". Because the party wouldn't know what a wish spell is.
Within the universe, it is kind of a mythical spell. For a person to be able to summon the Raven Queen with her champion with a simple word, that's not a small thing. And then the spell has a 33% chance of disappearing from the players spellbook forever upon usage, so it's not a spell you throw around lightly.
Sam said he was saving a wish to save Vax. He followed through with his word. He said one for Vax, he wished for Vax to talk at Vex's wedding. One of if not the most tear jerking moment of CR Campaign One.
Big oof when marisha says, "what are the limitations of this spell? What if you, I dunno, said, 'I wish for him back'?" And scanlan says, "idk, that sounds anti climactic to me."

i love the "when this whip falls, come in the room" moment. there's a ring of finality to it even though the whip will fall once scanlan lost concentration on unseen servant, its just so good.
The fact that his final wish was such a heart felt one was perfect, there’s so many amazing moments in both seasons of Critical Role and I hope they keep going for years to come
Rewatched campaign one. Honestly seeing this still breaks my heart. Seeing how much he tried to save his best friend. Rewatching sams reaction to this knowing he chose to save the rest of the world over his best friend. I ugly cry every time. Because even though I know what happens I still want Vax to be saved. I was rooting for him. He is my favorite. Well they all are but I love him. I scream and cry on my phone all the time watching this.
It always gets to me just how messed up Sam gets when he has to use up his 9th level spell slot that he was saving. The guy who made his character a Gnome Bard because it sounded like the worst character.
The True Ending in Dalen's Closet. Oh I love how this become a last Wish that really close the chapter of Vox Machina Journey. This is the best episode to close story

I love that when Scanlan does the move with the whip telling his simulacrum that if he goes down come on in. Laura is sad and in a state of despair immediately followed by Travis nodding aggressive encouragement
I like to think that the reason scanlan can’t wish after the wedding was because The Raven Queen had it and stormed to Ioun and demanded he was no longer able to cast it after summoning Vax.
I had a DM rule that Wish removes all prerequisites for lower level spells, including casting time, as it's a 9th level spell, and that's the territory of spells that bend and alter the fabric of reality itself, also something along the lines of "wish takes an action to cast, and it doesn't cast another spell, it creates the effects of a lower level spell, so why would you need to take 8 hours casting when the spell you're actually casting takes a single action?". Good DM is good.
I cried about 4 times watching this. What made me break down the most was the fact his last wish was the most meaningful. Jesus I love Critical Role ❤️
What I find most beautiful about all of this is that Scalan's last Wish was not used for his own pride, it was not used to gain power, he used such great power just so that one of his friends could see her own sister's wedding. That's a beautiful thing.

He didn't have anymore spells slots lower that 9 but higher than 3 i think. Which meant this spell level was the only one he could use to stop him for sure. AND HE DOESN'T SAY I WISH HIS SPELL FAILED. HE STRAIGHT OUT GOES I'M USING COUNTERSPELL... then matt asks at what level and he said 9.... Edit: ops thought you were the original person ^_^
Man, I keep coming back to these moments every once in a while. Still makes me cry on both the missed with and the last wish. I'll probably never get over the most selfless selfish gnome out there. Also, metagame time, surprised no one pointed this out, but in search for bob he could have just wished for a hero's feast, which would not require a roll to check if he can keep the wish. Though I'm not sure if Matt actually made him roll there, either by forgetting or because it was technically only cast to allow casting of another spell, so it's the same as replicating it with extra steps. Wish spell can duplicate any other spell without components just like you said. So wishing for “Heroes Feast” would have not wasted Pike’s spell slot. However, the check to see if he loses the ability to Wish again only needs to be made if he wishes for something outside of duplicating another spell. So in this case if he wishes for “Heroes Feast” which is a regular cleric spell (albeit high level), it would succeed without any components AND he would not need to make the check.
awww he used his last wish on the wedding. i think that's as close to a perfect ending for vex as we coulda asked for as well as the best point in time for scanlan's arcane power to reach it's peak
I wonder if Scanlan could have used Simulacrum on Vax, then used wish a second time to have Vax 2 take the role of The Raven Queens champion instead. Pointless to think about, but just an idea bumping about my head
@@JasperForge of course, I doubt a Simulacrum would fool her, but that's what the wish is for. Tweak the scenario by a word, from THE Vax becoming her champion to A Vax becoming her champion. Wish probably can't fool the Raven Queen or break a Gods deal, but maybe it can twist the conditions just a little.
**C3 SPOILERS** . . . . . Watching this and hearing Scanlan say "Just say Jenga", recalling where the story is in C3 right now. I need, for the life of me, for Vax to say "Jenga" at some point.
I never thought that I would cry from a role playing game. a scanlan gift is a noble, powerful and love-soaked gift. It was strong. and it shook my heart. It's a pity that Vex didn't have time to find a family with Keli... And he's glad that his sister was able to do it. also like - 5 kids). I would never have thought that having gathered in a company of friends, getting used to the role, to write such a cool script.
I just feel bad for Joe Manganiello in that moment where Scanlon counterspells Vecna, because Sam is having this intense emotional reaction right next to him, and you can tell Joe is kinda uncomfortable and doesn't know what is going on, haha.
yeah, not quite true :) Joe knew very well wat was going on! :) he has stated this in an interview. He was having a very hard time though, because he was trying to hide the fact that he was gonna bamboozle them all :D. In that interview he even said: well, i needed to pick my moment. In my opinion there is no bad races or classes. In the right hands any character can achieve great results

Level 9 Invocation.
Summons multiple copies of the caster in a radius of 100 feet to a number equivalent to a roll of 10d10. Each copy has Hit Points equal to 3d8 + 30, or up to half the Hit Points of the caster, whichever is lower. Each copy is capable of communication and spellcasting up to level 4.
It would have to be up to lvl 5 at least, seeing how his copy managed to cast Bigby's Hand, a lvl 5 spell.
The copy during the Vecna fight was a simulacrum.

I like to think that the reason scanlan can’t wish after the wedding was because The Raven Queen had it and stormed to Ioun and demanded he was no longer able to cast it after summoning Vax.

In the end, Sam did save his last Wish for Vax.
I had a DM rule that Wish removes all prerequisites for lower level spells, including casting time, as it's a 9th level spell, and that's the territory of spells that bend and alter the fabric of reality itself, also something along the lines of "wish takes an action to cast, and it doesn't cast another spell, it creates the effects of a lower level spell, so why would you need to take 8 hours casting when the spell you're actually casting takes a single action?". Good DM is good.

What I find most beautiful about all of this is that Scalan's last Wish was not used for his own pride, it was not used to gain power, he used such great power just so that one of his friends could see her own sister's wedding. That's a beautiful thing.

@@sodawax3457 he just uses counterspell at level 9. Not wish. But he wanted to use wish for vax. ^_^ still the history of wish without that missed wish.... would have been incomplete.
TheBloodypimp he used wish to recreate counter spell that way it wouldn’t fail. It was guaranteed that the spell would work when using wish
@@m1ck3y.m0us3 wanna bet?? He used counterspell at ninth level. And since the spell was lower than 9.... because well only level 10 spells are higher.... he didn't have to roll.
He didn't have anymore spells slots lower that 9 but higher than 3 i think. Which meant this spell level was the only one he could use to stop him for sure.
AND HE DOESN'T SAY I WISH HIS SPELL FAILED. HE STRAIGHT OUT GOES I'M USING COUNTERSPELL... then matt asks at what level and he said 9....

Man, I keep coming back to these moments every once in a while. Still makes me cry on both the missed with and the last wish. I'll probably never get over the most selfless selfish gnome out there.
Also, metagame time, surprised no one pointed this out, but in search for bob he could have just wished for a hero's feast, which would not require a roll to check if he can keep the wish. Though I'm not sure if Matt actually made him roll there, either by forgetting or because it was technically only cast to allow casting of another spell, so it's the same as replicating it with extra steps.

Wish spell can duplicate any other spell without components just like you said. So wishing for “Heroes Feast” would have not wasted Pike’s spell slot.
However, the check to see if he loses the ability to Wish again only needs to be made if he wishes for something outside of duplicating another spell.
So in this case if he wishes for “Heroes Feast” which is a regular cleric spell (albeit high level), it would succeed without any components AND he would not need to make the check.
awww he used his last wish on the wedding. i think that's as close to a perfect ending for vex as we coulda asked for as well as the best point in time for scanlan's arcane power to reach it's peak

Tweak the scenario by a word, from THE Vax becoming her champion to A Vax becoming her champion.
Wish probably can't fool the Raven Queen or break a Gods deal, but maybe it can twist the conditions just a little.

I never thought that I would cry from a role playing game. a scanlan gift is a noble, powerful and love-soaked gift. It was strong. and it shook my heart. It's a pity that Vex didn't have time to find a family with Keli... And he's glad that his sister was able to do it. also like - 5 kids). I would never have thought that having gathered in a company of friends, getting used to the role, to write such a cool script.
Oh Scanlan, what would've happened if you didn't say anything and created another Pike just for your entertainment...

I just feel bad for Joe Manganiello in that moment where Scanlon counterspells Vecna, because Sam is having this intense emotional reaction right next to him, and you can tell Joe is kinda uncomfortable and doesn't know what is going on, haha.
yeah, not quite true :) Joe knew very well wat was going on! :) he has stated this in an interview. He was having a very hard time though, because he was trying to hide the fact that he was gonna bamboozle them all :D. In that interview he even said: well, i needed to pick my moment.
