Banh Mi is one of the most comfort food for every generation of Vietnamese. You can barely see the Banh Mi stalls in front of schools in Vietnam in the early morning. Normally the school starts from 7.00 am so we need to wake up earlier and mom sometimes can not be able to prepare breakfast so we come to school and get in line for Banh Mi or Xoi man (Vietnamese sticky rice) aka 'Flash food' (take around 1-2 min to prepare from the stalls!!!). The base of banh mi includes the baguette, the Pâté, butter, vietnamese ham and veggie. Every stall has their own secret of ingredients and unique flavours like smoky grilled BBQ pork, meatball, jambons,... The way to make Banh Mi is so customized and there is no banh mi is more authentic than the other one. Love your travel vlog, I am a fan now 😁
Wow! This is super interesting - we have noticed each each Bahn Mi is so different and can definitely see how it’s a comfort food 😍 Thank you so much ❤️❤️
Im a vietnamese, not a Hoi an’s local, from my place we share a saying that goes: “ do not eat in a big, fancy and Well-known restaurant, eat where you see a lot of people sitting outside”. This is because i believe when a place gets famous for their food, then they would have tons of people coming and buying their stuffs. And gradually, they lost their way of making the good food like the way they used to do. It’s like an artist becoming famous, then he has to make a lot of paintings that indeed, drawn by him, but lose charm and just mediocre. That being said, there’s here and there. I’m not saying “avoid big restaurants and choose smaller, cheaper ones !” ‘cause you paying for what you eat , money does make differences. Im not a food lover so whenever i feel like eating out somewhere, i’ll be like, pray to be in a place that has good food. 😄😄 Enjoy your journey !
Such a fine line! We have found we like to try a bit of each - always find it so hard to choose where to go because everyone has such different tastes as well - one persons 10/10 may be the nexts 1/10!
Oh ... Hoi An! It has been dubbed the city of lantern, the most beautiful city in the world, the Venice of the East, a living museum, a fairy tale destination ... Whatever it is, Hoi An is "one of those places that conjures up daydreams of an ideal far away land - exotic, beautiful, and seemingly right out of a fairy tale." The beautiful, enchanting, colorful town makes you feel like you are taking a step back in time. As the moment you step into Hoi An, it feels like a book of ancient fairy tales came to life. The ancient city is breathtaking by day, but it really comes to life by night when the streets are lit up with beautiful lanterns. It's quite spectacular to see in person. Noted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, Hoi An is a magical place. Just go and see this place . . . there is no equal globally.
It truly is like a fairy tale, We spent 4 nights there and could have spent so much more time just wandering around the yellow streets! So beautiful! 😃✨
Nice to see you trying food and drink in Vietnam. I'm curious to try egg coffee Vietnam. Thanks for sharing. Happy in your day. Greeting from a new friend Indonesia. 👍👍👍🥰🥰🥰
You guys are so right about the banh mi. For a lot of us Vietnamese, there are so many better banh mi than there. Have a great time in Vietnam, you guys are so cute. Loved the Video ^^
Well anthony has been there over 10 yrs so things were modified. Big city tend to have the best foods because people from different provinces come into the city to open food stalls and restaurants. If you want live seafood go to Danang, Nha Trang, Vung Tau and Ca Mao.
The cao lau does look delish. I thought you were going to Nu Eatery as many people rave about that place. Attila and Zae's recent video showed them in Hoi An at an eatery recommended by a viewer and the food looks delicious!
I like your independent and objective banh mi review, not influenced by any celebrity chef. I'm going Hoi An in 2 weeks time and I'll check it out as well. Have fun!
Good call, definitely worth checking out and seeing for yourself. If you have time you should also check out Phi Banh Mi. It was our favourite in Hoi An and run by a lovely family! 😃
I hope you're headed to Ninh Binh in the near future as I'm still obsessed with Charl & Christine's recent video on it. It's absolutely breathtaking there and the ecolodge they stayed at was amazing!
@@JordanandEmily Oh, no! Yes, definitely come back in the future and do that one as well as the abandoned amusement park in Hue. Counting Countries just did a video on it and the dragon is so cool!
@Jordan and Emily very strange. Pate was so peppery and such a course texture. Safe travels! Try hong hoa in saigon. One of the much better ones ive had in Vietnam. Better than the famous one around the corner. I dnt wanna mention any names.
Great video guys!! We'll be in Vietnam for a couple months later this year and have placed those White Rose Dumplings firmly on our list of things to try. We're going to check out your other videos too to find your fav Bahn Mie. We clicked the thumbs up and subbed ✌✌🤙🤙🙏🙏 All the best!
I think if you're heading north, you should have saved the egg coffee until then as that's where it originated. One of the couples tried it a place that provided instructions on how to taste it. The end result was to stir to mix well before sipping. :)
Maybe it's not the traditional one when Anthony Bourdain first tried it. They expanded business after the shop got famous but the quality couldn't keep up with the expansion. Not the first time thing like this happen
Here the thing: Almost all Vietnamese food originate from the street. So in Vietnam, a luxury restaurant may be not better than a small roadside shop. If u dont like it, just say it. Love u guys cuz u dont flatter too much. Every country have bad and good sides. Vietnam too Nice video btw ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
It was filmed JUST as Vietnam opened - the rules were pretty relaxed and as we travelled around the world through the year it seemed the rules were getting easier and easier!

I think you guys should have saved your stomach for the night market food. Charl & Christine typically eat sushi and Western food since arriving in Vietnam, but when they first went to Hoi An, they tried a ton of food at the night market and loved pretty much everything they chose there, which really surprised me considering how limited their food choices were prior to this.
03:30 I don't think it's a good Vietnamese traditional banh mi, even if Anthony Bourdain recommends it. There are many kinds of banh mi, but the traditional one should not have grilled pork or too much pork fats like that. It should be like "banh mi Huynh Hoa" restaurant in Saigon, with multiple layers of meats and taste balanced.
My wife and I are currently in Hoi An for the second time and we personally feel we will probably never come back here unless it’s just for an afternoon day trip. There’s just not much to do here other than taking pictures of the ancient town and eating food. As far as the banh mi we also rated it the worst ever. My wife is Vietnamese btw so she knows good banh mi Lol
I will say it right now, Banh Mi Phuong aka the Anthony Bourdain one is so overrated, you can go to any street in Hoi An or Da Nang and find a banh mi cart that serves better one. Not only the quality isnt the best, the line is too long and sometimes the servers have attitude too.
