their drummer, Zach Hill, is one of the best drummers of the past 2 decades. I would really recommend looking at his solo stuff as well as the 3 billion other things he's collaborated on.
33:38 "Bottomless Pit is the destruction of the self" considering that this album comes after they were supposedly breaking up as a group or rather restarting from zero, it kind of fits the context. A lot of this album is actually less concerned with any overarching narrative and more concerned with making sure you're feeling the adrenaline that they're putting out, I remember the tagline to the album being "very shallow listening" almost implying that they didn't want people to go into it with any sense of deconstructive analysis, a lot of these songs are just super catchy, loud and upfront, and they're there to bring you to a different energy level. Which obviously doesn't deny the artistry in the lyrics, there's a lot of great writing from Ride here that drive at concise ideas, like Spikes being literally about losing control but being okay with it. A lot of this album can also be interpreted as like self-aware commentary over Death Grips themselves, like in Eh talking about Death Grips being "eh", in Trash they out right state "we upload trash, and trash begets more trash because we know clean don't last when we upload trash", or even BB Poison, calling out fans "Zach hit em off like it won't lit, they shit bricks, bbpoltergeist don't touch this" which is referencing how fans were speculating and going wild over one tweet that was sent over their account by Zach, essentially talking about how they recognize their own influence over their audience and people in general created dangerous effects, i.e. "Giving Bad People Good Ideas".
if youre really fiending for more heavy & punk inspired death grips, id recommend The Powers That B, especially the second half of the album called “Jenny Death”. would be a great listen imo
HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT I WAS LITERALLY JUST LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM. I’ve become completely obsessed with Death Grips these last few months, this album and Money Store being two bona fide 10/10s for me. So fucking excited man.
Dude, death grips has consumed for the past year, like for example, I went from only liking 4 songs on the money store(get got, I’ve seen footage, hustle bones and hacker) to liking every single song on that album. It’s insane how death grips can grow on you
Let’s go Bob this is one of my favorite albums of the 2010s, definitely one of the best rap albums of the decade imo, a 10/10. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I do
@@chewkie420I’d say so, yes; and it’s generally accepted to be. But it definitely incorporates sounds of rock and more genres which is what I love about it
Also Bob the second half of their album “the powers that B” is technically its own album called Jenny Death, and it’s very rock and metal heavy. Even more than this album. Definitely think you’d love it
Last time you listened to Death Grips you mentioned how they stopped doing concerts and now after a year they are back at it again! They have been way more active lately which might mean new music is on the way (or not but I want to believe)

From the little we know about DG and their process, yes, Ride's lyrics are very much stream-of-concious emotion over specific meaning. There were some lyric journals released on their website that showed how every song is pretty much written as a huge block of text without breaks. It's pretty cool. Ring a bell is one of my fav death grips songs. The beat switch on the hook is like perfect ear candy to me and a nice break from the heavy verses. Love the album but that song goes the hardest imo
Powers That B is a big album since it released in two seperate parts, from what you seem to like with death grips I think you would really like it, especially the second half, the sound is very similar to the last track on this, it goes from a song about having a piss fetish to the most deep and emotional song about suicide that youve ever heard right back into weird breakcore! also they play some guitars on it!! electric guitars!! like a normal band!!
I know a lot of people love the videos where your reacting to popular music and albums that just came out, but I love watching you react to weird and loud shit way more
No Love Deep Web is my personal fav album from them just so raw and scummy type music that really dives into drug abuse and mental illness like schizophrenic and bipolar disorder etc. . .
Also the song eh that you kinda got the right idea but it’s just how about how he interacts with the fans he gets recognized and the fans expect him to be happy or something but he doesn’t care about the death grips fans and wouldn’t care if they were non he just wants to make art
the hooks on this record are top notch pop songwriting. Spikes has one of the catchiest hooks I've ever heard, it gets stick in my head for a week everytime I hear it, and many songs on this record have a similar effect
i would very much so recommend you listen to The Powers That B by death grips. it's in two parts (NOTM and Jenny Death) so you could easily also separate the recordings. i know you're gonna like the Jenny Death half, except for like 1 song. if you want open, you've got open. On GP and Centuries of Damn are the most open songs in their discography. giving bad people good ideas does have a video, i know that for sure it's just them messing around with a shoe.
I’m so glad you reacted to death grips again. Life’s been be pre busy- I had a lightbulb moment when I realised that enough time had passed and you had probably uploaded a new death grips reaction. I was stoked to see I was right I can’t wait for you to come around to the rest of their catalogue- each album offers their own unique and mind blowing experience. Zach Hill is my definition of a genius- I listened to their song’s exclusively for a whole year without ever reading a lyric. I knew all of Ride’s lyrics and flows as an even mix of words I could catch and just sounds. See you next time Bob!
Love the video, was lucky enough to see them live here in LA. My dad and I were heading into the venue when my dad said “is that them over there”? I look over and see some guys and quickly brush them off, then I take one more look and realize that it is them. I brought a vinyl to hopefully get them to sign it, I start walking up to them calling out to Andy, and he starts walking towards me. I tell him the album I have (TPTB) is one of my favorite by them, and that it got me through a difficult time in my life. Andy said he’s happy that the music helped. He signed my vinyl and I asked him if the other guys could sign it to which he replies “if they come out here”. I see Ride near the building and I approach him saying “hey Ride, would you sign this”? And he looks at me and immediately shakes his head. Honestly I wasn’t even mad, and it was a great show.
Love that you’re getting back to Death Grips. I have a feeling you will love NLDW and TPtB. The first half of TPtB features Bjork vocal samples that she provided and Zach Hill spliced and threw all over the place. Also the tour before last Death Grips opened for Ministry so that connection makes sense and id say there are influences there.
This is easily the best death grips album. This was my first exposure to the band and it blew me away. It was so raw and visceral and like nothing I’d heard before. I was instantly hooked after this album.
I remember recommending this album on your first death grips reaction over a year ago and finally I can say I got exactly what I expected, great reaction worth the wait!
Yooo this is soo dope. I just went to watch them live on Tuesday. One of the best concerts I have ever been to. Now I see you reacted to them, what a badass week. Hope you enjoy it, this album is a close favorite of mine.
Been waiting for this one for so long, one of my favorite albums ever. I think it'll grow on you too when you don't have to pay such close attention to the lyrics. In my opinion the function of the lyrics pushes past conveying anything in the traditional, literal sense and instead is kind of just a combination of a lot of words that abstractly help to paint a picture on top of the sound. Lines like "Unwell out my slit gashes tempo I'm crawling with swarming crescendo" aren't easy to analyze cognitively but still contribute to painting a more subconscious picture that in spikes and warping the production adds to very directly. And yes I'm aware of how pretentious this comment sounds. Love you bob, kisses.
Arguably my favorite Death Grips project (and favorite album PERIOD) next to Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber)! Your reactions were so fun to watch! I love how something so aggressive and ballistic can make you cackle with excitement the way it does for me :)
been waiting for this reaction since your money store reaction. in my opinion this is the best quality and most creative that death grips has ever been. it’s almost like an upgrade of the money store with studio quality and mc ride has so many more creative flows and interesting cadences
Zach Hill, their drummer and main creative force, is one of the best drummers of the past 20 years. I highly recommend the album Hold Your Horse Is, from Hella, one of his previous groups
Been waiting for this one. Your interpretation are always so interesting. Would love you to eventually get through their entire discography. Amazing fucking video
Been waiting on this review for so long. Ex-Military is my favorite album from them. But BP is a very close second. Can't wait to watch this in its entirety.
I really loved your analysis of the lyrics. Really interesting interpretations that I wouldn’t have necessarily thought of on my own. Love how much you were diggin the album too haha
I’d say this album is about the fans. Even the cover is how I imagine the band feels we look at them, with these massive eyes and devilish grin, waiting for them to give us our fix. Like three bedrooms talks about how their music has inhabited “good neighborhoods” and proceeds to fuck fans senseless with the music they make. Idk, that’s my take, won’t talk about the full album but every time I listen to this album this is how I imagine they view us saying they’ll constantly give us “trash” and we’ll eat it up
Death Grips is so good that despite this being in my bottom 2 or 3 DG albums (not counting instrumental/ambient albums), this is still a 9/10 and one of my all time favorites
@R-H-B 1. Exmilitary (10/10) 2. The Powers That B (10/10) 3. The Money Store (10/10) 4. No Love Deep Web (9/10) 5. Year Of The Snitch (9/10) 6. Steroids (9/10) 7. Bottomless Pit (9/10) 8. Government Plates (8/10) It changes every other month or so, and honestly, all of the 9s are mostly interchangeable. BP is by no means bad, it just doesn't hit as hard as some of the others for me
Hey Bob I'm sure you've probably already been told this but I would definitely check out the Powers That B next. The 1st disc of the album isn't as metal influenced but the 2nd disc is absolutely killer and contains some of Rides most personal lyrics yet. If you liked the first and last song on this album then I would say The Powers That B is right up your alley
Im so happy you did this, if you want more rock/metal, PLEASE do "the powers that b" from them, it's a double album, the first half is more rap inspired (i think) but the second half is pure rock/metal
35:30 - Really good ears, because that's for sure what's going on. A lot of people have no idea just how involved Zach is with the production. He's not *just* playing around with synth modulation and sliding stuff around in a DAW -- he's actually banging stuff out on an e-drum kit. I always hear people go "I wish Zach were more noticeable" but if you listen closely and try to map sounds to drums in your head, you can tell he's playing a good chunk of the tracks. That process is probably how they make up a lot of the weirdly syncopated yet organic grooves you hear in their stuff, too. You can absolutely hear all this in their instrumental releases and on NOTM.
I’m actually smiling so much and I don’t know why. I guess that my favorite reaction UA-camr has listened to one of my favorite albums is the reason. Omggg I just want you to hear everything death grips song
I totally relate to when you don't want to hear your favorite artist for a while. Death Grips are up there for me and I hadn't listened to them until their tour. And just like you, I think it's exactly what I needed.
I remember leading up to this album, i think they either put out an early version of hothead or it got leaked. It was slightly stripped back in terms of production and some instrumentation differed. It felt more raw.
Sometimes I stop listening to DG for a few weeks or months, then I come back and put an album on, or one of their songs comes in in my playlist, and I'm immediately reminded of how fucking great of a band they are. Every album is amazing, it's insane
There is a 14 min video posted to the deathgrips youtube channel that was a teaser/introduction to what this album would bring. There is a music video for “giving good people bad ideas, hothead, eh, and the final track bottomless pit.” Zach hills solo work is also great you should start with “face tat” for something more aggressive, or I recommend “astrological straits” for something less aggressive, but still so. Amazing drumming
i think spikes refers to getting spike stripped (spikes are pulling) and skidding out in a literal sense, and skidding out metaphorically is talking about going off path in life or spiraling mentally.
if any of these lyrics seem maybe badly typed like the "it wont lit's it wont lit", "aye doe aye doe", "bite the gank move", theyre not necessarilywrong, theyre just taken directly from how death grips wrote them when they posted the lyrics on their site. but death grips are known to troll a little so maybe they put mistakes in there, or just didnt remember what they wrote, or there are double meanings, or just they didnt care that much to be perfect. But the genius writers really took those written lyrics as gospel and didnt change anything lmao

One of their best tbh, songs like spikes bring me back a lot. Their replayability is immaculate
Ride doesn't have a nice house and a big lawn, he lives in an evil wizard spire.
Really great to hear that you hear some Sepultura man, greetings from Brazil ❤❤br
Didn’t expect you to drop this so soon! Such an amazing reaction to an amazing album, never stop with these reactions man!
Three Bedrooms in a Good Neighborhood is the catchiest song I’ve ever heard in my life
i rubbed my hands together and smiled like a cartoon villain when I saw the title of this video
So glad you’re finally giving it a listen!! Please listen to the powers that be 😁 Keep up the great work Bob love your stuff man!
Can’t wait for bob to do year of the snitch
++++
It's my favorite workout album, every single song SLAPS
So hyped you're listening to more Death Grips!
I’m actually smiling so much and I don’t know why. I guess that my favorite reaction UA-camr has listened to one of my favorite albums is the reason. Omggg I just want you to hear everything death grips song
spikes spikes spikes
The record is absolutely bonkers. I love that 😄
I totally relate to when you don't want to hear your favorite artist for a while. Death Grips are up there for me and I hadn't listened to them until their tour. And just like you, I think it's exactly what I needed.
Seeing death grips live today this was perfect timing🤘
how was it?
So happy this album is amazing
Now bob needs to heard TPTB, that will be a wild ride
God I was so hyped for this reaction I am quite new to the metal genre but if anyone knows anything hard like this please let me know great reaction.
Literally going to see death grips right now. So hyped for the video when I get back!!!
I remember leading up to this album, i think they either put out an early version of hothead or it got leaked. It was slightly stripped back in terms of production and some instrumentation differed. It felt more raw.
don't sleep on the powers that b part 1 & 2, some of my favorite albums ever. Blew my mind when they came out.
Highly recommend No Love Deep Web as the next DeathGrips album, thematically and musically it makes sense to me as a follow up to this.
Sometimes I stop listening to DG for a few weeks or months, then I come back and put an album on, or one of their songs comes in in my playlist, and I'm immediately reminded of how fucking great of a band they are. Every album is amazing, it's insane
I did the most dramatic double-take at this thumbnail, so hyped for this!!!
been waitin this one! hope you enjoy
You should react to quadeca-I didn’t mean to haunt you. Probably the best story based album ever made!
idk about best ever made but youre right that he should listen to it
There is a 14 min video posted to the deathgrips youtube channel that was a teaser/introduction to what this album would bring.
Long time coming.
No Love/Deep Web would be great for a next DG reaction.
Thank you for doing my request!
definitely one of the most insane album openers of all time
And probably one of my favorite album closers of all time, Bottomless Pit is one of my favorite songs
if any of these lyrics seem maybe badly typed like the "it wont lit's it wont lit", "aye doe aye doe", "bite the gank move", theyre not necessarilywrong, theyre just taken directly from how death grips wrote them when they posted the lyrics on their site. but death grips are known to troll a little so maybe they put mistakes in there, or just didnt remember what they wrote, or there are double meanings, or just they didnt care that much to be perfect. But the genius writers really took those written lyrics as gospel and didnt change anything lmao
Funny you say, because the first time I saw death grips for the first time was with Ministry
Armand Hammer! New album has 4 Peggy produced songs! And a Kenny Segal produced track. And an EL-P produced track 😁
Just saw Death Grips in ATL and it was the best show I've ever been to
I was just listening to this album on the way home from work today, felt like I needed something loud and abrasive as well lmaoo
i am jumping around my room in excitement over you doing more death grips
