Why, because of sales margin. Cardo and Sena give him the highest dealer sales margin so you get pushed by a salesman who admittedly edits together very good videos. There might be an issue here. From what i can tell from pics, the input on the walkie seems to be TRS. that means either 1 mic + 1 ear audio or 2 ears audio with no mic. Phone headsets WOULD NOT work (they are TRRS). Could we get an informed answer on this, please?
Yup. My motorcycle club has been using them for years. Works way better than any Bluetooth based device when it comes to communication range. And if you can even program some of the baofeng uhf radios to be able to communicate with these Motorola units. Although you need to check with your country's laws if they're legal to use in your area. The advantage is range and has no limits to how many riders can join in.
I use a combination of a cheap china reciever like the BT-S3 (QA is hit or miss) and a adapter cable to a fit a kenwood/baofeng walkie talkie. Twice the hassle and a whole lot cables but you get both the fidelity of the bluetooth and the range of a walkie talkie. Still looking on how to mod a CB to use the system for that ultra long range thou
yep, can confirm, rechargeable packs for these radios have the lifespan of an antivaxxer child. go with energizer AAs as it seems to be the battery I've had the best luck with time-wise.
Motorola walkie user here! Simply add a no-name-made-in-China PTT helmet speaker and mic set for hours of trouble free chit-chat with my hubby. Works great when he decides to take a unscheduled detour and I have to pull a U-turn whilst spewing much needed expletives. ;-)
Our group has now upgraded to Cardos Packtalk Slim coming from other Cardo units. The new generation is really good and we are quite happy with it. What I dont understand is that Shoei has locked itself in with Senna. It was previously my go to helmet choice. Now I have to look for a new manufacturer. I dont understand why a helmet company would do such a thing. I can more easily convince myself to buy a new helmet as to convince my whole group to switch headset brands.
I am using a Cardo Freecom4+ on my Shoei Neotec 2, it ain't that hard to install and no different than installing on any other helmet. Just that it can't be as integrated if you were to get the Sena SRL
Thank you, I appreciate the work you put into evaluating things. I think it's valuable to have the opinion of an actual rider rather than accepting what somebody was paid to say. I'm curious to know what you think of Sena 10C Evo.
While hunting I use a corded microphone single earpiece on my walking talkie. If you think about it as half an apple corded ear bud that is what it is. Works really well
Sweet, I use my ham radio (Yaesu VX-6R) with my hand mic clipped to my collar, only downside is if I'm moving with any speed there is too much wind noise. I wonder if putting a sock over it would help? It's modified to work on FRS (Family Radio Service) frequencies (that would be the ones that Motorola and other "bubble pack" walkie talkies you'd buy at walmart or wherever work on) Difference is that I get to use 5 watts out of a huge antenna which means I can talk much more reliably than a stock FRS radio which is limited by a little antenna and only half a watt, but, those still should have plenty of range for a motorcycle group. Bonus of the ham radio is it can also be used to communicate with other hams possibly through repeaters so it can also be useful if I ever need to get ahold of someone in the bush as a bonus I have a long roll up j-pole antenna that I can string up in a tree for even better range.
I wasn't very impressed with the speakers in mine so I spent another $20 and bought a set of cheap gaming headphones, cut out the speakers and soldered them in place of the originals while keeping the stock wiring and mic. Sounds amazing and the only reason I kept the original mic is because people say I actually sound better when I'm wearing my helmet.
I think I watch all of your videos and you're usually spot on with your lab work. However this time, when doing the distance test early in the video, your antenna polarity wasn't matching on both ends. The true test is to have each antenna straight up and down and line of site to each other. Try it again as mentioned and I think you'll get much better range. Thanks again for all your hard work. MC
Awesome video as always. Got a vnet in june, the volume is basically impossible to adjust while riding, and the power-off button is right next to the volume up button and DOESN'T require a long-time press. 50% chance of shutting it off. I found it to be quite loud without earplugs, though with earplugs it might be a little too quiet depending on the type of music or your partner's voice. Also, the intercom only works for two people at a time, you have to switch between "channels"... So basically, it's a 2-person intercom. However, for 115 CAD for a dual pack, it's still worth it imo. Plus you can share it your second unit with whoever it is your riding. If range becomes an issue (never was for me), you can always make a phone call. Sound is great even without a full-face or windshield (riding buddy rides a sportster and wears a Bell Rogue.
2023 - an updatep please? I have 5 x Sena 20's and 2 x Cardo bold and ride in a group of 3~4 peeps - I prefer the SENA for clarity in a group. I regret buying CARDO last year but one of my buddies had it and raved - it's a fail for me with low intercom volume and its impossible to hear him/and his mates at speed... My 2 big complaints with both SENA and CARDO for these expensive units are a) no Micr0SD recording of chats - for video editing later - and/or b) no GoPro interaction/output jack? Why can't SENA have a meeting with GoPro, and make them wirelessly integrated? I might get a 50R (but if they address a) or b) above - The 'R" to stick onto my ADV helmet as I don't want to break my left collarbone with the bulky drop down mount of the S (or have issues with my LEATT ADV neck brace not allowing me to tilt my head left) BTW SENA - I sealed the S20 with tape on the top seam; and drilled a small drain hole at the bottom - and never had a problem in rain ever again.
The Motorola is a frs/gmrs radio; gmrs and frs have different meanings between Canada and the USA, so and using a USA approved radio that isnt also a Canadian approved radio in Canada is illegal. Probably the other way around too? Make sure the radio you choose has an FCC number if you want to use it in the states and an Industry Canada (errrr now called ISED) number tobuse in Canada. The power output may be vastly different. In the usa, GMRS can go up to 50 watts, in canada, only 2watts. Most canadian frs usually only goes to 0.5 watts...this impacts the range of reaching Japan.
Acoustician here, the SLM (sound level meter) readings at 04:37 actually seem to show different results. The Uclear at the bottom left is set to "Max", as opposed to what I assume is the average for the others. I would also question if that SLM measures average over time or just an instantaneous response. I wouldn't put too much faith in an SLM like that, useful for indicative ballpark numbers, but I guarantee you they are not accurate to 0.1dB
I was looking to see if anyone noticed that 3 of the four systems were labeled as the wrong brand at the same point in the video, so not only were they listed incorrectly but also had different settings on the SLM. My search for audio comparisons between these continues I guess.
Hi Ryan, I hear you're possibly not going to be doing video? I sure hope not, your videos are just amazing. Well, it's 2024 now and I want to buy a communications system to install into Shoei helmet, I want the absolutely best speakers and microphone to use with my new Sportster S which has all the new technology allowing me to communicate, music, gps via my phone. What earpieces do you use with those walkie talkies?!?! They use a small 2.5mm female jack and using a 3.5->2.5mm adaptor with regular in ear and mic headphones doesn’t work...
I like the Motorola T605, but I have a couple questions. Can you use VOX with it? What headphones/mic do you suggest to for use with a full face helmet? Thank you.
Any chance you can publish an updated video with what is available, as we are nearing 2022? I'm also interested in some of the "new tech," like Domino, which works through the helmet vs. having physical tech inside the helmet. Thank you.
When im on the road my comunication system is perfect its just me, The wind,The view and the road. No talking to anyone the only voices i hear are those in my head.
theoretically there is another option you didn't cover. what about getting a bluetooth speaker/mic for your helmet (just speaker and mic, not a full communicator system) and connecting it to your phone, then having the group get into a voice chat app like discord or google hangouts or something? no button to talk. music, no limit to number of riders, works anywhere so long as you have cell service, and not hardware brand specific.
cardo 4+ should probably be compared with sena 20s to be very fair, in the price range at least. Also good to mention that the intercompatability of them all suck to around 5m's range. Good for passenger- rider, not rider- rider
"...And play the Canadian National Anthem" - Hockey Night In Canada Theme - That put a big smile on my face. The Justin Bieber made me hoot. Hilarious. Great video, by the way.
Will never buy a Sena again. 20 replaced under warranty then failed. Now using a 10 and it's always losing sound in 1 speaker. Cardozo next for me. Great vid !
Same here. Had Sena 20s, was fine on its own, but unusable with 3 riders. Sena customer support was horrible and left me with same feeling that I would never buy a Sena product again. Have since gone with Cardo Packtalk units and they have been great. The main issue with the pairing and crackling sound of the Sena was resolved and no issues with the Cardo.

I enjoy my packtalk bold though I feel like the range is a lot less than 400m when I'm riding with my friend that I shared the duo package with. Maybe we need the antennas up? Quality is top notch though, but as always for something good, it was quite expensive. The speech command system and ability to have music playing softly in the background during comms is really nice though.
I've beard of binge watching Walking Dead and Daredevil, but Fortnine?! However, they are that good!! Thanks for putting up quality videos that are entertaining, honest, and informative. I've got a follow-up question to this topic on comm systems. You mentioned the Motorola as a viable option and briefly mentioned the user choosing a headset separately. Do you have any recommendations on a good headset to pair with these two-way radios? I've looked at options from Amazon. They seem to be either cheap and equally abysmally sounding Chinese-made units (I tested a set) that make my buddy sound like he's been gagged and duct taped, or they are "professional" grade earpieces fit for the Secret Service with a price tag to match (which I haven't dare to buy, yet). Any suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated.
If you want good audio for music, you really need some in-ear goodies. You'll never EVER get good audio quality from in-helmet speakers so long as they're competing with wind noise. I own a pair of Shure SE215's and the sound quality for the road is unparalleled. Well, actually, the only earphones better than Shure SE215's for motorcycle use are the higher-end Shure SE series. They have memory foam tips so they block out just as much sound as dedicated ear plugs, and if you buy the optional in-line microphone, then practicality is on-par with ANY of the aforementioned products. The 215's are a little lacking in low-end ooomph, but if you fork out a bit more and get one of the better SE series then you'll be laughing all the way to timbucktoo and back. Ride safe.

If you got a response can you share it? I'm trying to learn the same thing.
@FortNine, we need answers!
@The Underground Man headphones aren't the problem the problem is having headphones that fit under a helmet and a mic
@@CoreyBrass Look into Rugged Radios
There might be an issue here. From what i can tell from pics, the input on the walkie seems to be TRS. that means either 1 mic + 1 ear audio or 2 ears audio with no mic. Phone headsets WOULD NOT work (they are TRRS). Could we get an informed answer on this, please?
I guess I’ll buy a Motorola, seemed the best to me
Look into Rugged Radios for an off the shelf solution if you want that kind of a set up.
@@DanBrianGerona what headsets are you using under your helmet? I have a SENA smh5 that I want to replace with the Motorola setup. Thx!
Hubert ! Please be careful, rugged radios has a history of selling radios you need a licence for, which most people don’t have.
@FortNine: What headset did you use for the test, any suggestions? Also, is it possible to get music + com in the helmet with the motorola?
Soo many errors about the Uclear, especially the distance. We get 800 meters regularly. Only sytem in the price range with mesh.
Hahahaha, love the Letterkenny reference! PS, when will you be doing a review on the KTM 790 Adventure and Adventure R?
"Ok google navigate to havannah oh nanah" I fucking died man that was amazing, and the serious face lmao
"...the energy density of a burnt marshmallow" hahahaha
yep, can confirm, rechargeable packs for these radios have the lifespan of an antivaxxer child. go with energizer AAs as it seems to be the battery I've had the best luck with time-wise.

The Bieber part had me in stitches! Great series of tests!!!! Props to Cardo for the overall! 👏👏👏👏

@@coolhandchunk Yep as Squirrely Dan says, he appreciateses him.
Motorola walkie user here! Simply add a no-name-made-in-China PTT helmet speaker and mic set for hours of trouble free chit-chat with my hubby. Works great when he decides to take a unscheduled detour and I have to pull a U-turn whilst spewing much needed expletives. ;-)
Love the letterkenny theme lol
Man, I laughed hard with the Justin Bieber part.

Thank you, I appreciate the work you put into evaluating things. I think it's valuable to have the opinion of an actual rider rather than accepting what somebody was paid to say. I'm curious to know what you think of Sena 10C Evo.
Have you ever tried any of the earpiece/mics made to connect to walkie talkies? Love a review on those if you have.
While hunting I use a corded microphone single earpiece on my walking talkie. If you think about it as half an apple corded ear bud that is what it is. Works really well
Discord is the best way to go with your fav earbuds! No limit to how many people or distance as long as you have phone service.
Who needs communicators? I like to just wave and point...
The v6 is awsome, had one for 4 years now and its still going strong
same, i bought a v4 now for 3 rides talking at the same time
@@guille_snapshooter how do you do it at the same time?
Mats Nygård same
@@roberoba06 the V6 only let you talk 2 riders at the same time, but if you connect 1 V4 with 2 V6, 3 riders can talk at the same time
I wasn't very impressed with the speakers in mine so I spent another $20 and bought a set of cheap gaming headphones, cut out the speakers and soldered them in place of the originals while keeping the stock wiring and mic.
MC
Just came here for the editing/comedy. Keep up the good work
Awesome video as always.
And here's me using my phone and the earpiece lol.
My 2 big complaints with both SENA and CARDO for these expensive units are
a) no Micr0SD recording of chats - for video editing later - and/or
b) no GoPro interaction/output jack? Why can't SENA have a meeting with GoPro, and make them wirelessly integrated?
I might get a 50R (but if they address a) or b) above - The 'R" to stick onto my ADV helmet as I don't want to break my left collarbone with the bulky drop down mount of the S (or have issues with my LEATT ADV neck brace not allowing me to tilt my head left)
BTW SENA - I sealed the S20 with tape on the top seam; and drilled a small drain hole at the bottom - and never had a problem in rain ever again.
The labeling is wrong for the sound test UCLEAR is top right not bottom left
I sure hope you will create a new video for 2024 and I pray your not leaving FortNine but if you are I wish you the best, you're videos are the best I've ever seen on UA-cam. Thank you for everything Ryan. Take care.
04:28, you guys mixed the brands and actual comms on screen
Oops! We played with that part in the edit - must have shuffled the labels and forgot to fix 'em. The dB results given *are correct* for the labels on screen. ~RF9
@@FortNine Might want to put some notes in there somewhere. This is the first thing I noticed - thanks for addressing it here to specify that the dB/on-screen brand, but not everyone will see this comment. Also great video/jokes as always. Cheers!
@@FortNine any chance you can go into detail about making the walkie talkies into the comms setup like you have them?
What earpieces do you use with those walkie talkies?!?! They use a small 2.5mm female jack and using a 3.5->2.5mm adaptor with regular in ear and mic headphones doesn’t work...
Cardo Packtalk Slim is still the best. Love mine so much.
I like the Motorola T605, but I have a couple questions. Can you use VOX with it? What headphones/mic do you suggest to for use with a full face helmet? Thank you.
i'll take the motorola for communication and just use my damn phone for other 'fidelity' stuff thank you very much
Any chance you can publish an updated video with what is available, as we are nearing 2022? I'm also interested in some of the "new tech," like Domino, which works through the helmet vs. having physical tech inside the helmet. Thank you.
When im on the road my comunication system is perfect its just me, The wind,The view and the road. No talking to anyone the only voices i hear are those in my head.
That’s like the worst VNET one lmfao, I have the VNET 6 and it’s 10x better
now someone make a walkietalkie with the extra features :)
theoretically there is another option you didn't cover. what about getting a bluetooth speaker/mic for your helmet (just speaker and mic, not a full communicator system) and connecting it to your phone, then having the group get into a voice chat app like discord or google hangouts or something? no button to talk. music, no limit to number of riders, works anywhere so long as you have cell service, and not hardware brand specific.
The walkie talkie would do😂 thanks😆😆😆
cardo 4+ should probably be compared with sena 20s to be very fair, in the price range at least. Also good to mention that the intercompatability of them all suck to around 5m's range. Good for passenger- rider, not rider- rider
The moral of the story?

Just so you know if your friends run sennas your going to have a bad time..
I wish they'd remade this video for 2024. We have so many new players. Sena ST1 for "cheap mesh", Cardo has the Custom, Neo.

I'd check Autocom's intercom, they're fairly robust, quite good and would consider them top choice if I were looking for this part of the kit.
What about talking to just my passenger. none of my friends have a bike.😢 Maybe I need new friends.
what headphones you recomend for Motorola ?
I'm curious as well.

Did you ever find something that worked?

Did you get it on a Black Friday deal? They were dropping like 20% off the price!
K4 K nope a friend bought two and sold me one when his other friend didn’t get into riding
Is there one with great speakers out of the box or do you have to upgrade to get good sounding music?
I have the Cardo 2 freedom but I updated the speakers which sound way better than the original ones that came with it.
Ride safe.
