Note that the book version has a whole bunch of background information that is not in the series anywhere (even if you're fully caught up), but it was also clearly written before certain things were finalized, so there are a few continuity glitches; you can't take it as 100% canon, but it's good for theorycrafting.
The comics released after seasons 4, 5, and 6 (later this year) are 100% canon, although thus far only the first one is really useful to understanding the show, as it fills in an important part of a time skip.

My favorite part is when Luz gives Callum a pep talk about magic and teaches him to use glyphs, thereby confirming that Xadia is the body of a titan.
I don't want to spoil anything, but you might want to keep practicing your sign language or you might miss some interesting details.

100,000 people would starve. The Magma Titan, the Queens, Prince Kassif, The King of Delbar, The Queen of Evanwere, Iblis & Thunder would all be alive. The mirror would still be in Xadia. The prison of Aaravos would still be underwater. No bloody final battle. And most importantly that Claudia will still have a leg, no white hair & would probably go on to marry Callum. Viren is the key to everything. He started it. He may end it with his sacrifice.

And about Viren... only spoilery thing I'll say is that your opinion might change through the seasons.
I'm currently rewatching the 5th season after binging the four during the weekend, catching up before the 6th comes out, and, well... I can say for certainty that (at least for me) there isn't ONE strictly defined villain in the classical meaning during the entire show so far.
Just want to edit to add this in: the end of se5 ep.2 is truly the most terrifying & tear-eyed the show's gotten for me so far.

just so you know their are two side books that don't get shown in the show as far as I'm aware. theirs "the blood huntress" and "through the moon". "the blood huntress" is about rayla's backstory. there is one spoiler i believe but it's not a huge one. if you don't want the spoiler then read it after s3 ep3. "through the moon takes place between season 3 and 4 and will explain something but i recommend you read it after the first episode of season 4
3 actually! “Puzzle House” released last August and showcases Soren and Claudia. In October we will be getting the 4th called “Dreamers Nightmare”

The other 3 graphic novels are supplementary and not necessary for understanding the show. The books are the same in that they are not necessary for the show, but they do provide more details into character motivations and the like. The books and graphic novels have more depth than the tv show can have but it is not necessary for understanding the show. The extra medias are for the fans who love the series enough to want to know more, not because they have to read them to understand the show.
