Turning 'The Brick' - Olive Ash Woodturning
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 лип 2024
- In this video, we'll be discussing The Brick, a wooden figure that can be difficult to turn, due to its hardness and balance. We'll be turning it using olive ash and Yorkshire grit to see how each of these materials affects the finished product.
If you're interested in woodturning, or are just looking for a fun project to work on that will challenge your skills, then you'll want to watch this video! By the end, you'll be able to turn the Brick using some of the most difficult techniques available, and you'll be able to see the effect each material has on the figure.
This woodturning channel, explores the uses of wood when combined with resin, epoxy, to make woodturning projects, that are easy and can be classed as art. A lot of the wood turning projects I make can be completed by the beginner through to the more experienced wood turner. If you have any ideas for artwork, wood inlays, epoxy projects or any other wood turning projects please get in touch. Collaborations are always welcomes.

I love your creativity. Everyone else seems to turn bowl, after bowl, after bowl. You have so many unique and lovely designs - please keep up with the great content and ideas!!!
Thanks Dee, you always say something to put a smile on my face. I do try hard not to repeat myself and I keep a list going of ideas for the future, must be 30 or 40 ideas on there currently. You keep watching and I'll keep trying.
All the best
Mike
Another wonderful design and the wood is stunning too! It certainly is unique which makes it extra special for me because no one else will have one. Whoever is lucky enough to receive it will be thrilled. ❤
Thanks Janet, this one is still on my unit next to my desk, in it sits the large ball I made from a previous episode 😃
Yes, that's a nice little creation. And of course, befitting on a coffee table of a nice log cabin.
Haha of course 😂
Lovely!! I’m so glad you were able to keep the live edge. What a fun rustic bowl. :)
Thanks so much 😀
Another aesthetic adventure. Thank you.
Glad you enjoy it! 😊
Its a beauty, love how chonky it is.
Thanks again Mike
Haha that's why I called it the brick 😀
Love the bowl glad you didn’t loose it.
Me too 😀
That really is beautiful mike, I love the small upstand on the rim that just draws the eye straight into the bowl where you get to see that beautiful grain, and I particularly like that your bowl mimics the curve of the bark
Thanks Steve, I love the bowl but am not going to be rushing to make another till I get a more solid lathe :) This one just is not up to the job lol
I had that once, I said it was a good job it was plugged in otherwise i would have been chasing it all down the garden
Well Done, Mike, another informative video of a lovely bowl that highlights the wonderful grain. I love your attention to the design aspects - it is always good to hear your thought processes. A good fight, and a knockout win!
Glad you enjoyed it. I'm thinking of using some of your comments for my marketing 😂, after reading them I even want to watch me lol. Thanks as always for your kindness and support, Mike.
Another great-looking bowl Mike. Olive is one of my favorite woods to turn. It has such a lovely figure to it. I also really enjoy turning Mesquite. It is such a hardwood, but has great character to it.
Thank you very much! I've never turned Mesquite but I'm sure I will in the future :), all the best. Mike
Another superb piece 👏👏👏👏👏👏💕🙏🇬🇧
Thank you so much Maud 😀
Great finish Mike, beautiful, really enjoyed it
I can still feel the vibrations from this, I may try another on my new lathe 😀
Awesome end product
Thanks mate, what a pain it was though lol
Love your videos.Good luck with your new place.
Thank you so much! 😃
Glad it all turned out ok.
Love the bowl
Thanks Fiana, I would like another go at this but on my new lathe, would be so much easier 😀
@MikeHolton do you still have the other piece, or did you already make something with it? I've yet to finish all your videos
@@fionacrouch1732 I still have the other piece although I'm not 100% sure where it is 🤣
Quite a fight indeed. Turning anything out of balance is not fun and this was VERY out of balance. I was hoping the piece did not fly off the chuck. I can imagine how you felt when you had to remove the tailstock support. Glad "Murphy" was busy elsewhere.
Gorgeous piece of wood. The sealer on the bark makes the bark really stand out.
Very well done.
Dave.
Thanks Dave, trying to do anything on this bowl was frustrating and to be honest I'm glad it's over. Perhaps there are some things that should not be attempted on a small lathe :) . I must also get rid of the daft table underneath it, it's an old Ikea table that was left here when we moved in, whenever I get a new lathe the table is getting chopped up and turned into a bowl or two.
Murphy has not visited for a few turnings now, I'm sure it will not be long before he's back.
All the best
Mike
I’m way behind on videos! I like this one. It definitely looks solid.
Thanks Ted, it's certainly a chunky piece of wood :)
Really nice piece Well done Mike
Thanks Colin, it will be a while before I try one like this again :D
Great looking bowl 👍.
Thanks 👍 a real pain to do though.
Fun and brave
