Just popping in to make a small note: The researcher who died during the SCP-6800 testing is named Umar Hadid. While I know that TES would never mean to be exclusive in his content, I feel it's important to mention Umar by name because he's a minority character in the Foundation, and a lot of content out there sort of lacks that representation in the Foundation. I aim to change that
That said, great video as always! Thank you for covering this :)

For any of y'all complaining about "representation" - please just shut up.
If you really don't care about there being a minority character in the stories, then just don't say anything. One reason Mars put it out there because there have been several SCP UA-cam channels that have completely whitewashed characters not just from their stories, but other authors' as well. They just want to make sure that the characters are seen as they were originally written by the authors.
If you can't simply respect that, please leave any negative comments to yourself.

I think its just general hubris of the the fae to mess with things they think is below them. That's what gets them into so much trouble in the SCP universe. The foundation is guilty of this in a sense as well. In fae's case, it started with them taking offense at Asem's actions in kaktus verse, attacking the humans in the factory verse etc. It always seems to end with them being on the receiving end of some much needed "schooling" either by the actions of the foundation or by their own creations.
In another tangent, the way that the fae "create" the children of the night in kaktus verse, is similar to the children of the forest create the white walkers in GOT, no? or is it just me?

This is one of those articles that paints The Foundation as cruel and not cold, slaughtering an entire species just to save their own. It goes to show that The Foundation only cares about what they see as important, that being either their precious veil of secrecy and/or humanity.

    • @7ElevenTruther

@@sentinel_prime In a way the Fae in the kaktus verse are like The Children in the game of thrones but worse. They used dark rituals to get their deity to create the children of the night (scp 1000) to terrorize humanity (like the white walkers) not because their forests were being encroached upon by man, but because they zeolously believed that Asem had ,front their point of view, committed a grave blasphemy against their god Titania by using his own reality bending abilities to pull a star from the heavens and turn it into a fancy crown.
But ironically, after looking down upon the Fae mistreating and shunning these misunderstood "children" of her's that the Fae themselves had wished into the world, Titania turned against them and over time the Fae have been mostly forced to recede from the world save for a few pocket dimensions like scp 4000 while humanity continued to flourish. The Fae's efforts to punish Asem in the end, only yeilded a far worse outcome for their own kind. Their undoing was their own doing.

I think this SCP breaks with the consensus on the Foundation's characterization something fierce. Not preventing trespass into SCP-4000 is in direct contravention of that SCP's containment protocol and breaks the Secure and Contain mission statements. Letting an anomalous GOI like the Church of the Broken God get the run of the place and slaughter the inhabitants is also a gross failure of upholding the Protect mandate. Then the Foundation engages in casual genocide alongside a total veil breakdown for something as mundane as heat generation. Meanwhile, no wordcount is allocated to investigate the source of the blizzard or possible means to containe it. That story deliberately writes itself into bad corners for the sake of pathos and shock value.

    • @sssspider
      @sssspider 2 роки тому

@@Lrr_Of_Omikron If they "acted like a modern government", they would be doing evil because they think they stand to benefit from it in some manner. As it stands in this story, they're doing evil things because the plot requires them to do evil things so that they can be the villain, even though the things they're doing completely goes against any internal motivations they could possibly have. They're a literal strawman, made to do stupid and evil things because they represent a group that the author thinks is stupid and evil. The thing is, though, they really don't have to be.
The story as it stands COULD work if:
      a) It's clearly implied that the O5's are fully aware of the fairy genocide from the very beginning, and are intentionally condoning it through inaction because they kinda hate fairies anyways and think it won't affect their mission of the continuing survival of humanity, until the consequences become too big to ignore and it blows up in their faces.
      b) The initial effects of the anomaly are subtle enough that they CAN be plausibly dismissed as non-anomalous by the O5's without them coming off as complete morons. Like, make it a drop in average temperature in the Amazon followed by a mass die-off - unlike a blizzard in the Amazon, that's something that COULD be reasonably written off as just an effect of mundane climate change.
Or, alternatively, you could make it a story about corruption, with a rabidly anti-anomaly or anti-Fae O5 Council that has forgotten WHY the Foundation S, C and P's in the first place (to protect humanity), and is willing to take every possible measure to continue the fairy genocide even if it means the end of civilization as we know it, because they could care less about what happens to the rest of the world as long as the Foundation gets to stand victorious over a mountain of dead fairies. You could potentially even imply that it's the Foundation didn't just condone the Maxwellists but actually *baited* them in by leaving the well to 4000 open and unguarded; such that at the end of the story, the Foundation is deceiving the Maxwellists into thinking that the Foundation is working *with* them, when in reality they've been playing into the Foundation's hands the entire time.
Having the Foundation being characterized as either doing stupid things because they're misguided short-sighted, or doing *seemingly* stupid things that are actually part of an evil and Machiavellian plan, would both make for a much more compelling metaphor for the inaction of real-world governments to climate change, and would fit the Foundation's established characterization. Look no further than Project Palisade (of which TES has done an excellent multi-part reading of) that manages to pull off BOTH in a really interesting way. Whichever one the author wants, though, it's not my job as a reader to bend over backwards ascribing motivations with no supporting textual evidence just to make the story not completely stupid - it's the *author's* job to write it into the story. My issue with this article isn't that it's a transparent metaphor for the government response to climate change, but that it's a potentially interesting concept that's been so incompetently handled.

As much as I love listening to these stories, this one sticks out in my mind as a obvious outlier, no shade to the creator as they had put effort into this creation but there are some serious issues with some specific parts. While the entire section is devolving in the pinned comment with some making actual good points and the others simply attempting to get a reaction, the rest of the audience points out some good details. The foundation acts completely out of reason, especially when the church starts their "crusade" as they are effectively letting a scp be neutralized, which as we all know one of the is one of the biggest crimes you could do in the foundation (when done by intention). Bright plays the game and loses (yet his amulet does nothing) but if we assume he never had it here it still won't make sense as he of all people wouldn't have been so careless, but its still somewhat believable. By far the biggest issue I have is that the themes are incredibly heavy handed, which really kills any sort of interest when the message is so crystal clear. In all honesty, while I can appreciate the effort Marcelles has done this just seriously sits wrong without being said. Hopefully the drama of the old community exodus and the sparking over scp-2721 does not foreshadow similar events for menial reasons such as politics, and the site can remain relatively impartial. However given the moderation and the prevalent issues in this story do not bring me trust given my fears.

Eh, I don't know... this is a good read, but the logic in the story seems flimsy in several places. The Foundation, even past their initial lack of response don't seem much like themselves in this beyond their simplest ideal of keeping humanity alive. The Maxwellists are basically just story catalysts and I'm not very convinced the Foundation ever needed to work with them or act under their interests by the end. For better or worse, I get a strong vibe of White Wolf's Changelings themes here with fae and Maxwell factions, which is fine. I feel like the story as a whole has a convenient karmic doomed flow to it, particularly with the Foundation's 'We tried nothing and we're all out of ideas, better ally with the myopic faction who started this' direction. Also, the Dr Bright assassination also feels a little too convenient and clumsy in regards to his characterization.

Seems to me the Foundation forgot about the "protect" part of their mission statement. Really, this is The Remains of a Chair all over again except on a global scale: The reason the Foundation considers termination of an SCP to be the last resort is that you don't always know what's going to happen if you try to destroy an anomaly, and you may end up making things way worse.
So it's _kinda_ weird they didn't think it worth intervening in the genocide of a very magical species. They really should have realized something like that might have very serious consequences. @@hudo108 I don’t really believe it’s Reddit/Twitter people that are making these articles. I think it had something to do with the 6K contests itself, more so with the theme that was selected which was ‘nature.’ Dr. Cimmerian said it best, where the #K contests themes are so broad that anyone can write whatever they want, and then just slap in the theme just so it can be accepted in the contests. And the contests also have a limited time (1-2 months if I recall) to pitch an idea, write drafts, get feedback to edit drafts, rinse and repeat up until the contest is near its end and you gotta make your submissions. Then for the next 3 months you post, and wait for everyone read your article and vote on it. Of course highest votes win.
I think that because they have a limited timeframe to work with, they have to come up with something that somehow fits with the themes. And to me, that doesn’t really sound like a good idea. Because you would never want to rush art, let alone stories. And the ones that TES covered are usually ones where the foundation are depicted as evil, incompetent, apathetic, generally in a negative light. It’s a tripe that has been here since Series 1 (Example: SCP-054 The Water Nymph)
I think these writers have stuck with this trope because I think they believe that they’re making something “fresh” when in reality, it’s just easy to put the blame on an shadowy organization that isn’t restricted by any government, isn’t known by the public, and is basically a militarized prison.
And honestly, yeah, I’m sick of the trope too. It’s been done to death for years. And some of my favorite articles are when the Foundation does some actual good. Which TES has most definitely covered.
And even some other 6K articles are actually really good and deserve more attention. (SCP-6200 & SCP-6783 for starters.) which show the foundation actually trying to do some good. While also fitting with the themes of nature.
Again, I don’t think it’s Twitter/Reddit or left-wing politics are to blame for some of these articles. Because these writers have definitely put in a lot of time and effort into these articles. But they did rely on tropes namely “Foundation bad and dumb” and to me, that’s just being lazy.

Yeah. I've got to agree with you on this one. Through a strong conscious effort, I managed to hang in there and keep my suspension of disbelief _(barely hanging by a thread)_ till the end, because I rather enjoyed some aspects of this story and wanted to know where it was going, what the author was going to do with the world he built. And while it's not a bad story in and of itself, as there are some solid elements like the Fae Protagonist & the atmosphere & world building in the first third/half of the article, in the end everything falls apart for 2 main reasons:
1- Too many plot holes, most of which are gaping/huge and creating some intense head scratching problems as we all try to follow the story while making sense of the into that's being fed to us.
An example, that was really the nail in the coffin for me, was "where does the blizzard/snow come from?" It started as a simple nuclear winter ash snowfall but somehow became a real cold weather phenomenon that's expanding and of anomalous nature, although none of it is explained nor makes any sense.
Tess' hypothesis about a link with the Fae/Pignite expelling/creating water is really trying to grasp at nothing _(and shows what happens when you try too hard to correlate plot elements)_ as what I gathered from the Pignite being covered in water after being subjected to torture when reunited & left in silence with other Pignite "pieces"/entities?? Another major logic issue as it's clear that the metal contains some remnant of the Fae's consciousness, but at multiple points in the story they talk about harvesting parts of the whole (body)... so what happens then? Are all pieces made from the same individual somehow copies and each sentient? Or are they only sentient when all gathered or a big enough part? Doesn't make any sense once again! Well. What I gathered from the mention of water covering the "stones" seemed to me more like the author suggesting that these were tears than anything else... Certainly *not* the origin of the storm's water!
2- The other *MAJOR* issue that you mentioned, that is so important that it probably even supersedes the gruyère plot (Swiss cheese) & tons of continuity and logic problems, is that the author strays too far from the SCP Foundation's "Core Canon". Dr Bright, besides the fact that he's one of the warmest & most compassionate character out there, which is clearly the reason he was chosen, has this whole "Soul Necklace" thing going on, which is very problematic in this story as it would probably offer immunity to the Fae's Name Magic to swap bodies... Or at the very least it raises lots of serious questions, issues, none of which are addressed... I won't list all the other deviations from the SCP Universe's Canon as you did a good job. It's just that, *even with such a loose and extremely flexible Canon,* the author still manages to brutally shatter our suspension of disbelief by having well established characters, GOIs and organizations, act in ways that are just way too far off what is believable to allow for the reader to accept these acts. Like you said, the SCP Foundation would *never* have acted this way!
~> In the end, everything wrong with this article boils down to one single, common but always fatal mistake on the part of the author, one you just never can get away with: having elements (characters, items, organizations, etc.) happen and be there only to serve the story, regardless of if it makes sense or not. That's how characters are made to behave totally "out of character."
If I'm not being clear enough, take the following example as an analogy of my point: Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi!!! That's *not* Luke Skywalker... Everything he does and says goes against the very spirit, the essence of the character, everything he ever stopd for, and is he's there only to serve the story, to make it go where the "author" wants, managing to bastardize and desecrate our common modern culture and myths, commiting the most Vile of Cardinal Sins in Storytelling and Fan Service/Respect!

Not a huge fan of this one tbh. To me it isn’t consistent with how the foundation operates. I’m not a fan of stories where the foundation is bumbling idiots for no reason and especially not a fan of the way the council is acting in this one. Like complaining about the cost of giving that coin thing gold? They literally have a coffee pot that can produce liquid gold. I don’t know, no hate against the authors but it just doesn’t feel like an SCP tale, it feels like a story someone had that they changed to try and fit into the SCP universe but by doing so, made all of the SCP characters act crazy.

The established way the foundation works is completely upended, and it doesn’t (at least to me) add anything to the narrative by doing that rather. I think I’m starting to see why the beginnings of series 6 is dividing us right now
I don’t really believe it’s Reddit/Twitter people that are making these articles bad per se.
@Sneed said it best in his reply to me, “The challenges really aren't good for the site, it causes people to try forcing creativity and results in a bunch of samey articles that are all trying to be the most epic and deep thing ever. Recipe for disaster.”

Pretty sure the condensation on the pygnite was just regular (if anomalously produced) teardrops caused from whatever-fragment-of-consciousness-is-left recognizing a fellow mutilated fae.
In that case, the blizzard isn’t caused by a sudden increase in condensation (otherwise it’d just be a rainstorm), but instead just another result of pygnite production (which kinda makes sense: the metal itself continuously emits heat, but as a result of producing it, you create a phenomenon that instantly & continuously saps heat).

You cant blame bystanders with committing a crime.
While surely a grey area ethically, there is a pretty firm distinction between someone who commits something, and someone who does nothing to prevent it.
Its two distinct categories, at least to the point where if you were to take revenge on the neutral bystander, you'd be considered to be fully and completely in the wrong.
You can despise people for not helping you, but you have no place or basis for blaming them. That would be a level of entitlement that instantly puts you into the morally and ethically wrong position.

Kaktusverse also has the Fae as mankind’s mortal enemy, and while it’s been a while since I read -4000 I’m pretty sure the implication was that the Foundation was at some point in the past directly responsible for the Fae’s current status as nameless entities.

In a lot of cases this includes the things they are securing and containing. The Foundation would never, under any circumstances, ignore something as blatant as snow over the rain-forest. This was actually the straw that broke me. The Foundation would never not send a MTF or researcher group to find out what is going on. No not even if an 05 said not to, since individual 05s don't determine Foundation policy. They are called a council for a reason. They are especially blatantly out of character when they have barged into Middle of Nowhere America and amnestisized entire towns over a slight uptick in missing person's cases in order to find an anomaly. Never-mind that The Foundation has held to a "Don't try to kill it unless there is a provable way to not just create a new problem" mentality. A lot of early SCPs were straight up warnings as to why trying to destroy an anomaly before you understand exactly what it is, is a VERY BAD IDEA. The results of early attempts is why the Foundation is very rules oriented (fascistic), its why The Foundation will feed human lives into a literal meat grinder to keep said meat grinder in a box for another 2 weeks, which is horrifying and dehumanizing but from their perspective, needed. For a while articles kept this up, but a lot of the recent ones either make The Foundation out to be cartoon villain levels of stupid or act like the GOC (Global Occult Coalition) where nothing matters if the goal of destroying or subjugating anomalies "might" be achieved or like MC&D (Marshall, Carter, & Dark) and are sleazy opportunists out for self gain. (See the story about the "Yggdrasil" life tree thing. That one actually pissed me off a great deal. The Foundation is not MC&D, they do not act for profit.)
The SCP universe has good villain organizations with established goals, methods, and even a good deal of mystery to them to allow for plenty of expansion, but articles like this one either make the Foundation into those "enemy" organizations or completely butcher their general behavior for the sake of their narrative.

Why wasn't it the Main Church or the Orthodoxy? Maxwellism explicitly focuses on reconstructing Mekhane as a digital entity through piecing together his data from across cyber space. So why would they need massive amounts of Pygnite to rebuild him? The Church or Orthodoxy would make more sense to take this route given their beliefs? Not a big fan of this one. It actually has a lot of the hallmarks of what makes the 6000 series lackluster to me, in that it is quite on the nose with its allegories, and is completely out of character for the people and parties involved.
For one, the foundation does not just protect the veil of secrecy. They would absolutely not just let a group of interest attack an SCP. They *especially* would not let them attack the Faeries. Are you kidding? How many world ending curses do you want?
Speaking of Faeries, they are not sheep. They are the the remnants of an empire, and we have no idea what sort of nonsense and magic they have hiding in their forest. Even assuming you *could* attack them effectively, remember the whole “curses” thing? Yeah, the snow is basically a physical manifestation of the curse of their deaths, but they would be getting freakin *proactive* with that stuff. I’m talking serious “the rest of their race to curse the broken god into flesh and watch the other God eat it’s way out of prison” type stuff. The Faeries do not mess around.
And the Maxwellists don’t have much in the way of of machine-punk vibes before this, if I’m not mistaken. What a weird faction to choose. Maybe because that would make the foundation suspect them less? But even then, isn’t their thing the joining of consciousness as opposed to resurrecting their God physically?
And Dr. Bright, literally why is he here? Where is his medallion? How would stealing his name even work, other than just making two Dr. Brights? And there is no way in a million years he would ever in a million years play such a game, especially not with a Faerie of all creatures.
Yeah. This is clumsy, disrespectful to the characters and lore(you can respect the lore and characters and still have a different canon), and was written by someone who just wanted to use the SCP universe to make a statement, not because they have any real love for the foundation itself. At the least, I see no love for the SCPF in this article.
I’ll give the 6000 series one more try, should you cover them again. If it is yet another hard miss, I’ll just skip those videos from now on. I don’t have hours at a time to waste of authors who treat the universe like this.

Yeah ok... The uncountable amount of contrivances and moments where logic ceases really stop me from enjoying this story. I kinda liked it at the start, but then it all just fell apart.. You're telling me the Foundation didnt even think that making a resource that endlessly produces heat with ""seemingly"" no drawbacks DIDN'T have anything to do with the giant blizzard consuming earth?? sure pal.

    • @mariaapletneva

I agree, that's rediculous. Why the hell would they side with these crazy cultists who clearly caused the blizzard in the first place???
