Another story on my drive to work at 4:30 am! It seems like Jiles is giving us a lot more videos lately. Thank you for all the work you put into both channels ❤
Surly if there was a missing father and son with the son's name being Larry and all the media coverage you would have to think that eventually someone would come forward to report them missing...
I wouldn't have wasted my time after the kid refused his last name. WTF !!! He's calling for help but won't give his last name ??? Give Me A Break !!! "There's a SUCKER born every minute !!!" - PT Barnum.
Although not malicious like this, Me and my female cousin (Aged 14 and 15 respectively) did do something in the same realm, we got on the neighbor's CB pretending to be hot to trot teen girls while we flirted with truckers. You can imagine the attention we got, including a lot of offers to stop by, meet up or be picked up. Now I don't think we would have actually went some where, I don't think we were that dumb, but we were giving out more and more information on our location without really realizing it was being pulled out of us, that on hindsight could have got us "found". It was at this time a trucker came on the air and asked us to turn to a channel, and when we did, he laid into us like an angry step father. Telling us how dangerous what we were doing was, how he could tell we were young and getting dangerously close to trouble, and that if we did not get off the CB and stop doing what we were doing, that the police would trace us. (Perhaps not true, I don't know if that was possible or not) but it certainly did the trick. Later in life upon seeing the film JOY RIDE, I can't thank that trucker enough, as we could have gotten into some serious trouble if not dead had things continued the way it was going that day when we thought we were just "playing around".
@@tessaducek5601 lol, yeah that film Joyride had a special resonance due to our little game back then of doing the exact same thing. Yours would be the movie Don't Hang Up. It does for young prank callers what JoyRide does for young CB flirters. Adds an extra level of omg to it.

We all had access to someone’s CB radio in the seventies! People told tall tales all the time because it was so anonymous. We did manage to talk to some boys who said they were driving around our summer vacation beach community! We really thought they were in Canada! A year later I was introduced to a guy and we dated that summer. Turns out his friend was the one with the CB in his car! He was with him on most of the outings too, such a small world! This was in 1977 in Maine. I can’t believe how this came flooding back when I heard this story! Thanks for that! :)

Wow. What a story! Thank you so much. If it was a kid and it all was a hoax, I'm thinking he had someone older than himself providing some details to make it sound realistic enough to fool all of those adults into thinking its real- all of the things the kid said, etc....?
I am a born and raised New Mexican. I grew up in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho and I have never heard of this story. I don't know if it's because I was born in '87, way after this incident. Thank you for this great video. I will definitely be asking my parents about this story.
I actually remember this. Vaguely. I was listening to music mostly since the rest of the time it was work. And my daughter and our home, family. It really disturbed most who heard of it. Thanks Jiles.🙏🤔💔
This story has been covered by quite a few true crime podcasters, though, and it’s been discussed on websleuth forums for years. It’s blatantly a hoax.
Fascinating case, excellent production and narration as always Jiles! What I don't understand about this case is if there really was a missing child, where was the missing persons report to go with them?? Perhaps things were totally different back in the 70s in terms of how one went about reporting missing children, and of course an Amber alert wasn't a thing back then but I feel like a few phone calls to various police departments could have cleared some of this mess up.
If it was a kid who lived with just his father and they had no close family or anything then who is going to report them missing? Even today people go unreported for long periods sometimes, even indefinitely and are found before they're reported, because they live alone, in another part of the country and don't have close relatives or keep regular contact with others. And believe it or not, there's still a whole kind of constantly shifting job market, mostly basic labor, in which people are hired or fired or just stop showing up everyday and it's so common, no one pays attention. Basic construction, painting, etc- you can find a job on a crew with no experience or references and then keep it for years or move on. Thousands do it every day and there are always people to replace you.
@@mommy2libras It's a lot of 'ifs' though isn't it? What about the kid's school? What about the father's work place? Neighbours? Church contacts? My comment is just an inquiry, not a definitive. I believe it's likely the whole thing was a hoax but it's interesting to converse about it and it's only human to wonder about such things :)
I remember hearing n reading about this story at school in like grade 7 or 8 I'm 3r now lol but I do remember this so vividly for some reason weird how things come up in life that you haven't thought about for a second in 20+yrs😮
Wouldn't a surviving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt or uncle have come fwd as it being their family member reporting that Larry and his dad having never returned from rabbit hunting? Unless you believe Larry and his dad were the last 2 people left of that family and noone in the world knew them so could vouch for them or their existence and their never seen or heard from again 🙄🙄
I can remember a similar hoax occurred here in Australia back in the seventies. In our case the kid claimed his he was trapped in a car that was stranded on a cliff somewhere, and the rest of his family were dead. His voice suggested he was aged around just six or eight years old. I don't remember ever hearing whether the incident was resolved in any way. I just recall the initial news article, with the recording of his voice.
I think ultimately continuing the search was the right call even if it was increasingly obvious it was a fake you gotta see it like this if the transmission is fake and you continue the search you've been had if the transmission is real and you cut off the search you let a kid die
There are a lot of Shepard’s that wander around New Mexico and artifact hunters and extreme sportsman. It seems odd that over the years no one has made a report about a list relative and his son
That's pretty funny that the 'possible' perpetrator of the Larry messages was pissed that someone was listening in! Hell, everyone with a CB back then knew if you wanted to have a private conversation, you did NOT use your CB radio!
A six year old who knows that his father died of a heart attack? I didn't know what a heart attack was, let alone the symptoms of it, until I was twice that age. I did know my last name, though. And if a truck with the kind of radio antennas that were in use then landed on the roof, I highly doubt the kid and the antenna would have been unharmed. Vehicles weren't much more sturdy than tin cans then, and most people didn't use seat belts.
My first "don't share your personal information online" warning was about CB's the year this happened. I didn't have a CB radio but I remember the warning
Have they ever been reported as missing by anyone? Has the car ever been found? It was supposedly in clear view, right? Not under water or in the middle of the woods. Adding everything else, I believe it was a prank.

Based on true events in Australia Little Boy Lost (full film) ua-cam.com/video/hszKlRi2ryQ/v-deo.html There was a hit C+W song of the same name. His mother never gave up hope that he would be found.. Unfortunately she outlived him and he died in 2020.
Ok, growing up in coastal OR, my brother and I would mess with truckers on the CB out of boredom. Nothing nefarious, just making fun of their handles, and turn about was likely and easily fair play. However, we never would have pulled a nasty hoax.
Where I come from (1970's Australia) on CB, that would be your callsign. Your handle, is your actual name. My callsign was The Midnight Moonlighter, but on sideband it was Siara India Golf 564. Happy Days.😊
What about his family even if his mother died he would have been missing from school eventually and surly his father had a job where he would have been missed and even if he was homeschooled by a jobless father he had to get fuel from somewhere once in a while and just the fact that the supposed two were never reported as missing especially during this is pretty reasonable to believe it was a hoax
That's like pyromaniacs enjoying the drama they caused. By now the supposed wrack would have been found or relatives and friends of the alleged victims would have spoken with the authorities
Hopefully a little boy wasn't really in need of help. Part of me feels like there's no way someone did not report these two missing or perk up when they heard the story about them. But at the same time, I can't picture a little boy carrying on this story for days as a hoax - unless a big brother or someone got him to do it. That might make sense to me.
If this was a hoax, then someone had a very sick, twisted mind and the kid, or adult pretending to be a kid, needs their ass kicked in a heinous manner. If it wasn't, then my heart goes out to the child. I believe it was a hoax, but there is always room for doubt. Stranger things have definitely happened. I've always been intrigued by this story, and I guess I'm always going to have to wonder. Lol
personally, I think the first few transmissions were real but thanks to all the bored teenagers at that time, Larry's calls for help were drowned out by all the fakes... Larry's radio would have died and no one would have known
We can only hope larry was a hoax, a gruesome thought otherwise. We can slso hope that any missing people would by this time be confirmed but they had strange ideas about multitudes of people wandering off without a trace back then
There's no way a truck is going to roll over n end up somewhere it couldn't be found. It's going to be near a road or trail. Not only that but a CB antenna wouldn't broadcast very far being upside down, bent or broken. The signal goes up and spreads out. It basically looks similar to a ripple after dropping a stone into a pool of water...
I certainly hope that it was a hoax. Given the inconsistencies with the boys story, the alternative would be horrific. Perhaps he just didn't know his last name. Perhaps David was another child, perhaps his real name, or the one given to him by his captor. Maybe even another personality. In any event I can't understand why they didn't do a vehicle registration search for a blue and white pickup. Even now they could search retroactively for any missing blue and white trucks. Basic old school police work.
Sooo, over the days this father and son were missing, his significant other didn't call anyone to report them missing......even with the news. "My husband drives a red and white truck, and I have a son named Larry.....nnnaaahhh, can't be" Seems like a hoax. In that first transmission, maybe he'd asked David for help with the prank, and David got scared and left the room
I think that it was a hoax because by now, if indeed the truck crashed on a road, it would have been found. I don't think there are any roads anywhere in the US that haven't seen at least one car in 40 years! But, I would think that once the hoaxer, if it was a kid, became an adult, they would own up to it if only to get their 15 minutes of fame in at least the New Mexico area. That's what surprises me the most I think.
Sinister story huh? We had someone in our home town call in a fake order to Pizza Inn. Left the whole town in a state of crazy confusion. Hit me up, I got all the details for a real hot story that you should make a video on so
Overturned truck with a lead acid battery? Battery wouldn't have lasted 2 days..even a good battery wouldn't have lasted 2 days with a cb radio being used,,,I'm assuming there's a few on here who have gotten out of their car and left the radio on overnight ..dead battery by morning 😉

personally, I think the first few transmissions were real but thanks to all the bored teenagers at that time, Larry's calls for help were drowned out by all the fakes... Larry's radio would have died and no one would have known
Let me find out LYING A** CARLEE was inspired by Lost Boy Larry 🧐
😂😄😆😂😅🤣

Larry's are trouble. I know...I have a cousin named Larry...
"My husband drives a red and white truck, and I have a son named Larry.....nnnaaahhh, can't be"
Seems like a hoax.
