I was a firefighter back in the late '90s and early 2000s. One of the biggest fears was a bleve. As firefighters, we were trained to just get everybody in the vicinity as far away as possible, as fast as possible. There's not a lot you can do. And that debris and shockwave will be like having a bomb go off. It's ridiculous.
I lost two Uncles to such explosions. They both were closed casket because they were burned so badly. It was a farming accident and my Dad and my other Uncle saw the barrel while driving towards the farm....it was lifted up high into the air and both ends exploded..in a huge ball of flame
I lived in Kingman, although I was out of town for the holiday. News coverage said the town was wiped off the map, and we couldn’t reach family by phone, so we raced home. Mr. Williams was our much loved high school principal. Thank you for helping to keep these memories alive.
God bless the families of the heroes of Kingman. God bless you, living in the remnants, of this God awful man made catastrophe. Its terrifying. How did I not hear of the Hill fire In AZ?! ~~ me sitting alone... Jiles speaks.. the dialogue goes like this . Me! " oh, wow , aww man!" "Jiles stop, please God it cant get worse! " Jiles ~" but hold on, it gets worse from here!" You really engage with your audience when speaking. Not everyone can get me to talk to myself, and yell at the computer screen!
A Story My Father told me once about Hazardous Materials, i will never forget, was how a young man was being trained at his job as a tool.and die repairer in a machine shop and there was a lot of metal work. There was a vat of acid in there and my Dad said the young man (for whatever reason..lord knows) spit on that vat...and there was a chemical reaction and the acid blew up and splashed on the young man burning him horrifically
The intro goes perfectly with this 2nd channel 'Somewhere Simister.' Already hooked on 'This Is Monsters'. Thanks Jiles, for all the work you do to every one of your vids.
PreciousHeart, it's been 50 years, not 40. I'm not picking, just don't want any of those folk gettin' upset because of a mistake. Love your content!!! Keep it coming!
Accidents like this is why we have regulations on a lot of things. When politicians say they want to cut red tape, or regulations, it's because corporations don't want to have to pay for safety and quality standards. Regulations are why we can turn on the lights and not be electrocuted it's why buildings don't fall down. Companies don't do these things in their own. All of them cut corners
My primary school was just up the road from the port where all the petrol and diesel was stored in huge tanks. We had a whole plan in case there was an accident but even as a kid i knew we would be toast. Theres just no room for error with these kinds of things
Hey newer veiwer here, not sure if you will appreciate this but your intro music gives me the same feelings as when i used to watch unsolved mysteries as a kid. You know its going to be intriguing, and possibly scary ! Keep being awesome !!!
How horrible. 😢 It's always so upsetting when people needlessly die before better safety measures are put in place ... However it is very heartwarming that these men inspired their younger generations to follow in their footsteps... Essentially setting aside any trauma, fear, or even anger such an incident may instill in order to honor said loved ones and protect future generations. #StayEpic #NeverStøp
Great video, as usual! Only, this was 50 years ago, not the 40 years ago you mention several times in the video. Still, it was very well done. You're awesome!
This is *horrifying* - literally one of my worst nightmares. Holy shit... The firefighters had *no* chance of helping, they only had a risk of getting truly hurt or die - which some of them did... This is just horrific. I have no words... Sorry, this is a worthless comment, but I'm just all shook up.
So it appears that all the LNG going around the world is rife for horrible accidents! Thanks so much Jiles! Somewhere Sinister is so different from any other UA-cam channel because every episode is so darn different! From Avalanches to Nuclear Accidents to Lost boys to Racist treatment in the South, I never know what I am going to get when I start watching! Just like Forrest Gump ALMOST said: Somewhere Sinister is like a box of Chocolates, you never know what you are going to get! Thanks again!
I've never heard of this disaster. Thanks Jules for bringing those victims names forward, and for giving the tragedy a bright spot as to how improvements have been made to protect our beloved emergency service workers.
May God Bless all of those people that were involved and sacrificed so much. They are true heroes in communities. It’s hard to find people like that in this day and age. Thank you for sharing this story, Jiles. I had never heard about this. Judging by the date, I was about two years old when this happened.
I love the Somewhere Sinister series! Really hoping for some longer form content soon! Your voice is so relaxing and calming for me. Idk why but it is soothing lol Thank you for all of the hard work on both of your channels! I have been a sub for year's now and enjoy the content you make. Keep up the hard work
Of course I love all of Jiles’s stories he tells us but I just wanted to draw attention to his great thumbnail pictures. They’re not clickbaity and they’re little works of art.
Why do onlookers onlook? I remember when the explosion happened in Kansas City in '88, and people were nuts to want to see what a god-awful explosion was caused by. I had to get to work that morning, and the place looked like a military site, so I turned around and took the long way into work. By the way, could you cover that one? It happened in 1988 in the storage caves off of 71 highway. It wasn't a construction site, like they said, it was in this big limestone formation that had tons of caves that were excavated to make storage caves for sensitive material. Not hazardous waste, but hard copy files, paper documents, some military things, some economic things, like serious fund information and that. We all assumed it had to do with documents that someone wanted gone. I do mean there was military shiz there like you see on news programs about other countries. You know, there was an arms factory not half a mile away from it. Just on the other side of the apartments we lived in, which were projects.
Great video, never heard this story before! Who knew that an aluminum wrench could do SO much damage!! Such a tragedy that happened! Good things DID happen due to this accident, which does not always happen.
I work with hydrochloric acid, haxevalent chromium 6, sulfuric and others! I do chrome plating, and even the chromium foam is dangerous. It implodes upon any spark, sober or flame! I have had many a close, LOUD, calls! I thank God for tough ears and quick reflexes!
Thank you for always telling us what the USA measurements and what Europes measurements are ie: Fahrenheit and Celsius because I certainly can’t convert them 😂
Safety measures are always the result of someone's tragedy. Businesses will operate on the concept that it's cheaper to take the risk of injury than to set up the highest safeguards against the injury happening.
The fires in Australia a couple of years ago bush fires were so intense they created their own storms. There were even fire tornadoes. No one had seen fire act like it did
Was wondering if you would look into the disaster at Port Chicago, Ca. I’ve heard different versions on different sites and thought maybe you can see anything worth telling the story about.
Kingman doesn't get enough recognnition, at least as far as documentaries go that most people know about, though are you going to cover the other notable BLEVE incidents too in the US? Praxair in 2005 springs to mind instantly, as well as Murdock, Ill, and then the ones outside the US tend to show up in BLEVE videos though. I'm pretty sure just with hazardous materials you could do an entire series for decades to come on that mindTHere's
Kingman is a town, that until recently, anyone wanting to get to Vegas would need to travel through to get there. I can imagine how terrifying that visual would have been for any incoming tourist.
You'd think that in the fifty years since this happened, they could have developed more safety precautions. I know you mentioned improvements to the tanker cars, but we still have crashes, derailments, and toxic materials leaking out. 😠🥺
Air, water, land, and all living species in area are damaged. Retribution and restoration are not a priority nor recovery. 💰 🤑 💸 💲 oil petro cash bioterriosm is so unnatural and, yes, toxic. This why Hemp $ matters.
Also I’ve read comments saying that people fall asleep to your channels and although the stories are pretty fucked up, the way you present them and narrate puts viewers and listeners in kinna an ease. You are something special Giles. Thank you for that!!!!
Have you seen the San Bernadino Train accident and what happened the next day. That was amazing or the Gas Fire I think it was in Tacoma. That was bad also
So I am currently houseless and I am in an abandoned house that’s not for sale. It’s owned by a property company and was very broken apart. People had ripped out the wiring it’s not something the average renter or homeowner would be interested in so I have to be able to heat it somehow because I live in upstate New York. so I use an indoor propane heater and I get a 15 pound propane tank twice a week and it’s how me and my cats can stay warm. Boy oh boy am I freaked out now 😮😮
