    Putting together a "Teaching List" is an interesting challenge. You have to accomplish a few things with it. 1) Stock it with ships and cards a new player will likely have 2) Keep things simple, but add enough complexity that they're learning the game 3) Make the list strong enough to compete with the more experienced players on Game Night.
    Here's one I came up with on the spur of the moment, with explanations for why I included each ship.
    Blue Squadron Novice + Targeting Astromech : A simple, solid ship. The astromech is a very simple, yet very powerful combo. It's easy to pull off and has an immediate benefit.
    Red Squadron Veteran + Cool Hand: Another solid fighter. This one has a discard ability added. The decision of the best time to use an upgrade like this can be a difficult one, but using it wrong can be a learning experience instead of a game deciding error.
    Gold Squadron Pilot + Ion Cannon Turret: The sooner a prospective Rebel player learns his way around the Y-Wing, the better. The upgrade was chosen to teach the value of turret fire arcs as well as familiarize the new player with the Ion weapon rules.
    Airen Cracken + Assault Missiles: I wanted the list to include one ace, and I wanted it to be someone with a 'handshake' simply because it encourages our new player to practice keeping ships together and setting up attacks. I also wanted to make sure the list had at least one disposable secondary weapon. Assault missiles were chosen because they come with the Z95, they have a powerful effect, and can totally backfire on you if the positioning of your ships is poor!

      My training list for the Empire would go something like this..
      (2) Epsilon Squadron Pilot: Bone stock, cheap and expendable. There's no sense hiding the facts of life from a new player. :)
      Epsilon Ace + Weapons Guidance: Now we introduce a few wrinkles. The pilot ability is very easy to use, very straightforward, but you have to remember it's there. The Tech upgrade shows how the value of actions can be modified, as well as giving a feel for how cards may read differently from how they play.
      Gamma Squadron Pilot + Proton Torpedoes + Seismic Charges: This ship will teach another Imperial staple, the TIE Bomber. It's also good to have at least one ship on the list that isn't a paper kite! Protons so the player gets used to disposable Secondary weapons, and Seismic Charges to help them learn the intricacies of getting the most value out of Ordnance.
      Turr Phennir + Juke: Another staple of Imperial lists, we go with Phennir because he'll be a lot more forgiving to a new player. There's some good decision making with his special ability, and an introduction to arc dodging. Juke will encourage the player to Evade a lot, which in turn will help them keep Phennir alive long enough to do something.

      And a Scum list to round things out
      Binyare Pirate
      Black Sun Soldier: The list starts with a pair of Z95s, cheap good for the points ships. I specifically chose two with different point costs so the new player could start to learn the importance of activation order. This could just as easily be 2 x Binyare Pirate to show the effectiveness of choosing which ship you want to activate first.
      Cartel Marauder + Glitterstim: A staple ship with performance much different from the Z95s. Glitterstim introduces the Illicit upgrades, and puts the player in the position of making a choice of when to best use his expendable resource.
      Ruthless Freelancer + Outlaw Tech: Another staple, a much tougher and tankier ship. The Outlaw Tech is added to help the player learn how upgrades can be used to minimize the weaknesses of particular ships.
      Drea Renthal + Proton Torpedoes + Bomb Loadout + Seismic Charges: As with all these lists, I want to include at least one ace with an interesting ability. Drea's ability puts the player in the position of deciding when to accept the stress in return for an immediate advantage. Protons are here to teach about disposable secondary weapons, and the bombs to learn how to use Ordnance correctly.

    a good tip is build lists that complement the way *you* fly. for example, I started off flying fairly defensively, and my early lists reflected that in that I flew 3 Ys and a HWK, as well as 4 Y wings. now, after getting so much experience, i can fly mostly anything and do well with it.

  • @docobe

    This video is great Berto. Something I would add that my friend noticed about my list building... Choose offensive or defensive. There are truly few lists that are really good at both, you are better to go for one of the two. This advice has really helped me. An example would be Nymz flying the VCX-100, there was a few things like ion projector that stopped him from rushing in, but if you have a predominantly aggressive list, then be aggressive.

    Just started playing and being a new player I made a few hand shake teams because I played games like magic and heroclix were teams and decks that work together do well. What I tried to do was make builds that use handshakes but not rely on the handshake. I did win a tourny with Wedge with R5-P9, Swarm Tactics. Corran Horn with Fire Control and Jess Pava R7-TI. I try to keep them together so Wedge can usually get a few hits, Jess fires next using swarm tactics and he gets 5 attack dice and then Corran get 6 attack dice and his second attack he gets a target lock for. That is 14 attack dice, I have wiped out large ships in 1 round with this.

    Thank you for this video! I am just getting started out and bit off more than I could chew played a few games with a friend he has everything and I wanted to be competitive without really knowing how to play then had bought so many ships my head was spinning. I am running imperial so any links that are helpful and really how to read the cards would be good if you have them. My advice based on what you have is just buy a couple things play them know them and then buy another as I always out of my head overwhelmed. I think this tutorial put me at ease and has me just looking to enjoy what I have and work with what I have. Appreciate it! On a brighter not FFG is happy with my purchases and so is coolstuffinc 😂 FFG FAQ 27 pages is a whole other animal as well 🤦🏻‍♂️should have kept it simple !!!!

    with regard to upgrade cards, be careful not to overload you're action bar,especially if you can't get PTL. having actions that you're not able to do is just as bad as having ordinance that you cant spend. wasted points. Action economy is DEF something to think about.

    I've just discovered this game and bought a starter set a y wing and a headhunter can't wait to learn all the tactics and tips! Quick question are there plans for a wave 9? And what would be the best larger upgrade set to get first? A Millenium falcon for example or perhaps a hounds tooth? Should I also limit myself to one faction?

    • @ReconPaint
      @ReconPaint  8 років тому

      +charlietrumpet96 start off with one faction, i recommend... large ships for rebel, the falcon is pricey for squad points, i like the freight running dash and heavy laser cannon (HLC) with the outrider title card for it... wave 9 nothing set yet, but there is an imperial vets coming out soon, (not wave 9 though)... practice practice... and keep your list simple... and learn to fly it... -berto

    Just a comment from a newbie, but try not to use terms people aren't familiar with unless you define them. I think have a grasp on what a "hand shake /list" is, but it's difficult for new players to pick up leet speak as it were. :) Thanks, love the videos.

    I love a good handshake list lol
    Just curious, what's the ruling with initiative and winning if you can't kill each others ships?

    • @ReconPaint
      @ReconPaint  8 років тому

      +Brandon Sosoli Handshake lists are good when they are simple, but i seen lists that sometimes have too many, or very situational handshakes.... for the Initiative, in the latest rules: images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/a7/9c/a79ced72-1da1-466a-97d7-5bd573457afd/x-wing_tournament_regulations_v10_high_res.pdf here is where it states during the elimination part after swiss rounds, "If a game during elimination rounds ends and both players have the same score, the player with initiative receives a win and the opponent receives a loss."

    • @BrandonSosoli
      @BrandonSosoli 8 років тому

      Awesome, thank you very much for that!
      Yeah I see what you're saying with the handshakes. I run Roark and Chopper to make Chops, PS12 during combat and boy doesnt that scare some people the first few rounds. I actually want them to chase down Roark though, I try to use it to my advantage and it gives Chops a chance to get on their backsides and fire without taking return fire, the greatest thing is Roark only has to be within R1-R3 so you can keep him pretty far away most times. Really good against Aces not so good against triple U-Boats lol

  • @shdwfx40001
    @shdwfx40001 8 років тому +1

    yeah to be fair I still think the Hound's Tooth Expansion and the Starviper are something you could buy right off the shelf, break open, and play competitively as a decent list. If I could give a piece of advice I'd say play something VERY simple first, just flying naked ships against another person. Then, once you know how it works, start building lists.

    • @ReconPaint
      @ReconPaint  8 років тому +2

      +Sam Perry i still play with naked ships, mostly... my baby blues, List Review: Berto's Baby Blue Squad (4 T70 Xwings) - X-Wing Miniatures - SPG and my hounds.... Lists: The Dog Pound (Triple Hounds YV-666) - Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures - SPG: Eps-54 they are straight forward and fun to play, and can be competitive ...

Asteroid placement will help out a bunch with the larger ships. Do your best to stay at range and out of the main arc. IT won't be an easy match but good flying should help mitigate some of the damage output! But don't take my word for it.. I'm wrong half the time it seems lol - Nymz

    I can't roll dice. my bad dice rolls are so consistent, that people build their lists with it in mind. people count on my bad rolls, because of how badly I always roll dice. I have to use accuracy correctors on my IG's or I won't ever get a damage through. cards like predator and glitterstems are completely useless to me cause I just roll more blanks. focus tokens are meanigless cause if I have one I won't roll any eyeballs. it's horribly consistent, and extremely frustrating. and getting my ass beaten down every game due to impossibly bad and consistent dice rolls is about to make me quit. I love the game. and I have invested over $3000.00 into it. but it's just no fun to get beaten down EVERY game simply due to dice. I fly OK, and I judge my distances well enough. I have decent strategy. but in the end it's always the dice...
    what can I do???

    • @4Mental
      @4Mental 7 років тому

      Tabitha Martin it's damn hard. One of our guys had the same issue for the first five months and it's not a great feeling. Sticking to one list for a while and learning how to manoeuvre with it, getting it in a position to minimise the damage from the enemy and maximise your chance. it's always tempting to change list every time. Another option is to try and minimise the chance of the dice (as your doing with the accuracy corrector) such as concussion missiles with guidance chips or auto results, say from advanced targeting computer on a tie advanced or backdraft.

    • @tabithamartin4092
      @tabithamartin4092 7 років тому +1

      +Chris Brock I have started using concussion missiles with guidance chips. I have also started using proton torpedoes, autoblaster cannon/turret, fearlessness, and anything else I can find that screws over the dice. it HAS helped some. but these items are also expensive, use up vital slots, or require range 1 or a range 1 joust. and of course it's even harder to defend. autothrusters doesn't do much if I have to be at range 1 for MY attack. a focus token or glitterstems is, again, useless for me as I won't roll any eyeballs. stealth device will be lost the first time someone attacks me.
      so with my attack mods, I can now do some damage under the right conditions. but I can't ever seem to just kill anything, it always survives with at least a hull point. at which point it has already blasted me for 3-4 damage or now it returns fire and blasts me for that 3-4 damage incli ding at least 1 crit, and I evade 1. yeah, I also pull "direct hit" and "blinded pilot" a lot... my luck is pretty bad, always has been. I even bought a dice tower hoping it would force randomness. it helped a smidge sometimes, maybe 15-20% of the time.
      i don't seek an unfair advantage here, or Lady Luck. I only want an even playing field when it comes to dice rolls. but I won't get that. so I need something else to even the playing field. with OUT resorting to using the Empire and it's cheese, or cheating dice rolls like I see a lot of players doing in major tournaments. yeah, watch them. they cradle the dice on 1 finger between 2 other fingers. then to "shake" the dice they just move their hand back and forth a bit (the dice never move during this, they stay safely still in the "cradle")' then to "roll" the dice the simply turn their hand over and literally drop the dice flat from 2 inches off the table. they see what's in their hand before the drop and can easily calculate what will come up. I have even seen a guy use his thumb to turn the dice while it was cradled between those fingers just before the drop, to better his roll... no really, go back and watch some of those major tournaments. now that it's pointed out to you, you might notice it.
      I can't cheat like that... I need something more legit. I just can't seem to find it...

    • @4Mental
      @4Mental 7 років тому

      I definitely know about the 'controlled rolling' that your talking about and have fallen victim to it many times with 40k back in the day. Like you said it's pretty much cheating, just short of placing the die on the table with the result they wanted.
      The only other thing that's worked for me honestly, is rolling more dice at the target. One list I am running at the moment is lothal rebel (tlt, fcs,Rey, tactical jam, ghost), zeb (phantom), Jan ors (tlt, swarm tactics, nien numb,vt). This list just throws tonnes of dice at a target, quantity over quality, eventually something goes through! And then ensuring I focus fire on one target till it's dead.
      I understand that it's as frustrating as hell, but you will find something that works for you. Don't give up, the Dice will average out. Focus on how to manoeuvre with your list to maximise your hits while minimising the opponents chance to hit back. Focus on the areas of the game that don't require luck such as placement, obstacles and blocking. When it all comes together, you will find the Dice start working.
