Animusic is midi mapped animation, it's actually pretty incredible how they did it with the technology they had. Also none of the notes could've been animated incorrectly or inaccurately because the music was all made in unison along with the animation
We actually played Drum Machine as a percussion ensemble in high school and it was super fun. My percussion teacher was obsessed with those videos and we actually had the video play on a screen while we performed it.
Here's one that's technically not from animation, and you can't see how he hits the drums, but a skilled drummer might be able to rate it anyway: Rowan Atkinson's classic Invisible Drum Kit skit. Does his movements match the sound as well as it seems like?
Code Lyoko Season 1 Episode 2 "Seeing Is Believing " In the episode there's several examples, as one of the main characters is trying to find a drummer for his band. There's several drummers in several styles, and even as a kid they all looked incorrect.
I was always impressed by how Animusic had special software that would drive their animation using the music, rather than creating an animation and making music to fit it. It's why they were able to use the same assets to make "Pipe Dream 2," by just swapping out the music file. It was, of course, a little more complicated than that (they had to pick the camera angles, and other little adjustments to make everything work perfectly) but the process they used was always so great to see because it made the immersion so deep. There were no "wrong" notes, and for a lot of their stuff you could think "this is actually possible, if someone ever bothered to build this."
@@Nareimooncatt except in the ibm video, the balls didnt actually play anything. The music was a separate track. You can see some balls miss yet the note still plays.
It's always great to see people talk about Animusic. I also grew up OBSESSED with these videos. Hell, I'm _still_ obsessed. This music left a mark on a generation for sure. Definitely great to see another fellow musician appreciate the artistry and attention to detail.
How it is that this was the first of this series I've seen, @EMCproductions, I will never know. That said, it surely won't be the last. Having watched your take on Patrick Star's circular drum cadence, it reminds me of the galactic circular drum 'set' that George Jetson plays in an old episode of the Jetsons where he was spying on his daughter Judy after she won the Jet Screamer song contest- in order to not exactly be found, George Jetson plays the drums (much to Judy's surprise) & as a result he becomes the president of the Jet Screamer fan club. Definitely worth a watch/listen for accuracy... especially because he's seen going all the way around for the full futuristic effect.
2:14 ngl, it looks pretty fun to play like that. And I could definitely see a whacky 80s no-substance arena rock band drummer setting up his kit like that.
1:00 Patricks drumset is modeled after the Simmions SDS1000 (the first electric drumset) and is actually 100% accurate. Patricks playing is a bit lackluster tho, B-tier at least :)
You know, given that starfish are radially symmetrical, I’ll bet they _would_ set up a drum set the way Patrick has. What I find a lot more confusing is what those drums are supposed to be. They look like a bunch of practice pads turned on their sides at ninety degree angles.
I'm conflicted between the simpler, straight to the point videos and these longer ones which take more time but admittedly are presented in an entertaining way
I watched a short video, I guess you could call it documentary, of how animusic was animated and programed, and it was really cool and efficient how they did it! I'd recommend going to check it out if you haven't seen it already
It's so funny that this video even exists because you know this exact topic has always crossed your mind and wanted to discuss it with somebody else who cares... Im dying 🤣😭💀. Genius content here
Phineas and Ferb, I know they have quite a few, they have a couple scenes from the episode "Getting the bacd back together " and they have a few others. definitely check them out.
Kirby and the forgotten land has a band in waddle dee town with a pianist, two guitarists and a drummer and over 87 songs but only pick one. I would like to know how accurate the drummer is…
been watching all 4 episodes after discovering them today. I am a bit surprised that in the episode with games GTA Vice City stories didn't appear with Phil Collins "In the air tonight" nor any of the Love handle songs from Phineas and Ferb. Great series though... subbed and checking out the channel for other drum related videos.
IIRC Animusic is so accurate because the animators mad virtual instruments in a program and then actually played them in the program. closer to a music machine vs an animation set to music
Ok ok ok Hear me out Sakamichi no apollon (Also known as kids in the slope) The animations is CRAZY accurate and the animator even used actually musicians as reference It's an anime about jazz and it's really cool actually So yeah definitely recommend that
Honestly, looks like Patrick set up his drums correctly for a starfish to play. They all look about equal distance apart and there are 5 drums. Given that Stephen Hillenburg was a marine biologist and a great visual comedian I bet thats what he was going for, and I've never even considered that until now... what a genius...
It's my understanding that the placement within the tier itself is also a scale with the left-most placement being higher on the list: S - 1 2 3 4 A - 1 2 3 4 B - 1 2 3 4 etc....
SUGGESTION: Scooby Doo. There are a couple of episodes I recall seeing drumming. The Hex Girls song is a big one. Did you know "The Mystery Machine" is the name of their band? Scooby Doo released in the late 1960s, when many shows were incorporating a band for some reason. This is why the first season had a music interlude to go with the mandatory multi door hallway chase scene
Which drumming animation should I critique in part 5?
Yes
The CatDog episode, “Battle of the Bands.” Especially since Dog claims he’s a master at drums
You should so some julie and the phantoms
I think you missed my request about Hop where a bunny literally plays a drum kit at Hoff Knows Talent. His name is E.B.
Or how about you do "We Totally Rock", which is Season 1 Episode 9 of Bubble Guppies, the episode where Gil plays the drum kit.
I believe they set up Patrick's kit up as if he were an actual starfish and would presumably hit each drum with one of his arms.
Probably
The thing about Animusic was that the animation was MIDI-driven. There was no way the notes could be off unless they were manually taken off.
Was just about to say that
The software engineering behind it really is genius.
they are a real thing the had you can look up the pipe dream machine its real it dosn't move but it is a real thing
@@CheeseLordAlmightytheOneGod Intel built a model of Pipe Dream for a convention, is that what you're talking about?
@@CheeseLordAlmightytheOneGod A "real" version was built, in honor of Animusic.

Yep, only thing “wrong” is that the animation and sound could wind up out of sync, but that issue would be with playback and re-uploading.
That re-creation of Patrick's drum performance was awesome it sounded so cool 😎 👏 👌
I was more impressed about the weird drum setup and laughing about it. That was a good bit.
We actually played Drum Machine as a percussion ensemble in high school and it was super fun. My percussion teacher was obsessed with those videos and we actually had the video play on a screen while we performed it.
having your drums set up like patricks actually made me laugh out loud. great playing too!
Here's one that's technically not from animation, and you can't see how he hits the drums, but a skilled drummer might be able to rate it anyway: Rowan Atkinson's classic Invisible Drum Kit skit. Does his movements match the sound as well as it seems like?
This would be awesome to see a drummer analyze
Celebrity Drum Solo Tier solos
he did
I seem to remember it was pretty accurate, but would like to see a breakdown to verify.
The fact that you nailed it with that weird configuration just puts you in pro status. Well done
Yo, I can’t believe that you haven’t done the opening of Vivo yet. For an animated kinkajou, he’s pretty spot on. Short segment but worth it
The Animusic clip unlocked a core memory.

Patrick just got that tenor timpani set up.
ive heard that animusic uses some software that animates directly from midi or something, so in theory every single note is correct.
Pretty much. IBM later made it real. Look up their version of Pipe Dreams.
@@Nareimooncatt except in the ibm video, the balls didnt actually play anything. The music was a separate track. You can see some balls miss yet the note still plays.
better yet. Animusic made the software to do that
dude i could binge watch these videos all day
I literally died when you set up your kit like that haha
It was quite entertaining watching you play the "circle o' drums."
Any time a sax is playing you should add Carelessness Whisper.

your drum playing definitely looked way cooler with the Patrick set-up! Patrick deserves extra points for style haha
OMG the animusic... I havent thought that about in 10ish years. Thanks for sending me down that train again.

You should include some more animations by youtubers (like the Snot McDucky Show) to see how they compare to the fully produced animated series!

If I had to animate drums I would animate them to fit a different song just to annoy people.

The fact Patrick can drum at all is nothing short of impressive still
The only reason Patrick Star’s drumming was so off is because Squidward told him his real talent in mayonnaise was not actually an instrument.
This series is amazing. Cool to see drums featured in shows.
Video 50 of commenting until EMC makes a front ensemble out of spocks
