I laughed so hard at this scene. I get they want to make the characters more heroic, but would have been fun that it was actually Scanlan looking for some SPICE.
What I thought would happen is that after he refuses the spice, he messes up his meeting with Kaylie and drinks his troubles away and ends up laying in a pool of vomit or something outside and then the guy comes to him again and asks if Scanlan spices and this time Scanlan, more depressed, accepts the spice.
Beware, mild spoilers: More true to the campaign, sure, but this way actually sets up the future events better. It's not so much about heroics as it is about contrast. If Scanlan starts out looking for spice, then later on him doing spice is in line with expectations. But him being offered spice, refusing it, and then later doing spice after... events transpire... demonstrates a change in his character and outlook. In other words, this is not an easter egg. This is foreshadowing.
Scanlan looking for spice wouldn’t have gone as well being he’s trying to make amends with his daughter, and being high would not go over so well. So he did the mature thing and got shitfaced on booze instead lol

So blacking out on his spice trio is a road sign he passes It leads him on his journey if growth as a person who becomes more then a walking coping mechanism lol. I can't wait to see how they depict the journey of vn as a whole demand each if it's members journeys of growth into more than a simple band of misfit mercenaries lol
It certainly seems to be setting up for that, personally I suspect that after his meeting with his daughter, Scanlan returns to the team, everyone else lays into him for not being around for Whitestone and then he dies or is badly hurt during a fight only to finally snap when he comes back and sees they made a joke of it.
I didn't hear it during the show itself, but now, re-watching this clip, I'm realizing that Matt, whether he intends to or not, is 100% channeling the Space Core from Portal 2.
People forget, Sam played it off as joke but this is actually part of his character going through a really tough time and turning to drugs. Proably though to translate to animated show. Vox Machina is in my opinion still the best of all the campaigns so far. Raw and grand.

jarrett (the head of emon guard from s1) was a hireling of VM who asked scanlan to bring him back some spices from his home in marquet. Oh my god I thought it was Caleb but I remembered that he probably wasn’t even born or maybe he would be a kid? (Critter who doesn’t remember timelines.)
Yes but having Scanlan as a drug addicted moron doesnt fit with the narrative they are going for in the cartoon. In the actual tabletop Scanlan falls to an addictive drug as a joke but then plays the victim that no one helped him, more of Scanlan messing up and being upset no one bailed him out. (Because Sam does a ton of comedy but his characters comedic moments are mostly toxic traits. Like Notts violence and drinking or FCG being a terrible therapist that doesnt listen to his patients and refuses to self analyze his own martyr seeking.) In the cartoon they want to portray Scanlan as a guy who worries so much about being in two places at once he fails to commit and angers both his daughter and Vox Machina because hes too self centered to stop drowning in his own insecurities and confront WHY hes letting people down.
