  • Alright, let's talk about how to fix Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. But first, we have to fix the rest of the trilogy, so let's dive into how to fix The Force Awakens, how to fix The Last Jedi, and what might have been if the trilogy had gone in a different direction from the get go. The Rise of Skywalker will be handled in Part 2 because this video was getting long.

Um... I think the best thing that COULD have been done with the Holdo Manuever is have ADMIRAL ACKBAR do the manuever instead. That would make his stupid death actually mean something, and not have to introduce another character.
Holdo isn't THAT bad, but they just did a huge disgrace to Ackbar.
And have Captain Phasma be the person who replaces Hux in everything... And it would be SUPER cool if SHE was the spy in TROS, and maybe even keep her alive? It also would have been cool to see Commander Pyre from the Resistance TV show actually do something :)

There are a few things that would make the films okay. Don't kill off Han Luke and Leia is the main thing. Look at the book franchise. Did they sell more books by killing off the core of Star Wars? That would be stupid as hell to kill off the driving force of your books, even WITH new characters to fill in, there is still a lot to tell with Luke and Han and Leia. It really hurt the fan base, it was an unwise move that they could have saved for six or seven films later. Palpatine was also a stretch, replace him with a twin of Snoke or a clone and that would tie things together well, how he could have such a hold on Ben. Twins would be very powerful.

@@MELODYMUNRO Finn was initially going to share the spotlight with Rey a bit more equally, but unfortunately (and largely due to racism from higher-ups) got shunted to the background after The Force Awakens. As the series stands now, narratively, Finn plays a MUCH smaller role than Rey (though I wouldn't go so far as to call him or Rose entirely superfluous). But originally, he was supposed to be much more relevant. I'm not sure what happened to Rose, but in any case I enjoyed what little I did get to see of her character, and I'm still rather upset that both Rose and Finn were nigh irrelevant to the plot, and I'm VERY upset about how Disney bowed to the whims of a bunch of racists at the cost of the mental well-being of two of the big actors of one of the most profitable franchises in cinema. They deserved better; even if they were in small roles in small films, they would've deserved better, so I think it heinous that a giant media monopoly with loads of money and cultural power would treat actors poorly and make racists feel justified.

I think when Kylo asks to join him in episode 8 she should have joined. It's the same situation at episode 5 but completely flips the narrative. Would make episode 9 far more interesting. Make Finn's arc in episode 7 and 8 him becoming a Jedi. Then episode 9 is Finn trying turn Rey and Kylo to the light side.

    • @dmsviola1
      @dmsviola1 4 роки тому +15

I'll stick my neck out there and admit something... I'm a Reylo fan.
Now before anyone sticks me up on a cross, I'm interested in Reylo not because Adam Driver is hot or whatever justification preteen minds come up with. I wanted to see the dynamics of change that they could bring about in each other.
From the get go, Kylo Ren tried to convert Rey to the dark side, but she was able to see past his figurative mask to the good that still existed within him. What I wanted from Reylo, romantic or otherwise, was a push and pull between light and dark that eventually equalizes into something grey.
Kylo Ren could return to being Ben Solo, tortured by his decisions but determined to move forward. After the murder of his own father, the heartache of his mother, and Rey's constant proding at what's left of his conscience, Ben could come back to the light, if only a little. He could realize (most likely through Leia, not Rey) that his grandfather's legacy wasn't one of tyranny and injustice, but one of sacrifice, redemption, and love in spite of all consuming hatred.
Rey could have been Rey Palpatine, the young nobody who became a hero overnight. Someone who's praises were sung high and low. Someone who became obsessed with their own image as a hero. As a wielder of power. Someone who starts falling down a slippery slope into darkness that is only fueled by her dark legacy.
Between the two of them, they constantly battle against their rage and regret to bring true balance and peace to the galaxy their own way. Not the Sith way. Not the Jedi way. Something entirely new. A path they've thrown each other into, but nonetheless a path they walk together. That's what I was hoping a "force diade" would amount to. That's why I thought Reylo could work.

There is a difference though, and it’s called humility. Being humble and admitting that just because something sounds better in YOUR head doesn’t mean that it will translate well to others is the best way to have the audience agree with you even if they don’t like what you present them with. It shows them that you’re conscious about the fact that their opinions may vary and that it’s okay if they disagree. By saying “I am not claiming to be smarter or more talented than Disney or Kathleen Kennedy,” he’s letting the people who DO like the sequels, because they do exist, that his opinion and his ideas are not to be taken seriously. Besides, not everything that Kathleen Kennedy has done has been awful. She’s had some good moments and she was even at George Lucas’ side for a lot of years which is how she got the job as president of Star Wars in the first place. Let’s not forget that she also produced Rogue One, and she was a part of The Mandalorian. She had Carrie Fishers blessing as a boss and she canonizes the female R2 droid that a child cancer patient made as a fan creation, which she didn’t have to do or even acknowledge. She’s not a bad person just because you don’t like the movie she green lit. Just like Rian isn’t a bad person for making a movie you didn’t enjoy. People seem to forget that nowadays.

Doesn’t make him an asshole, it makes him someone who’s gonna fire back at you with his own opinions. Besides he has already said that he appreciates the loyal and passionate fan base who didn’t like what he created. Comparing what people have said about him and the actors, I’d say what Rian says and does is totally valid. He’s not harassing anyone. He’s not sending death threats. One good fix for both Holdo & Rose: have Rose be the traitor who sells them out to the first order and have Holdo be aware that there is a traitor but unaware of who the traitor is.
For example Rose could have sold them out because the First Order was keeping a member of her family hostage (like her sister that we see early in the movie, have her captured instead of dying). That would also explain why Holdo doesn't tell her plan to anyone as she knows she cannot trust everyone aboard the ship.

Forget Hux. Forget Phasma. This trilogy needed THRAWN.
That could have served Kylo's story in so many ways.
    1) Obviously as a foil. Thrawn is older, more experienced, calmer, more collected. Feared and RESPECTED by his men (and Snoke, by extension).
This could be used to get under Kylo's skin even more as he comes off as a petulant child by comparison--and as the films establish, Smoke continues to talk down to him, while treating Thrawn as a respected equal, etc, etc.
Thrawn would also be a very natural explanation for why the First Order rises so quickly.
AND he would be a walking fan service target for both Legends fans AND Disney extended universe by way of Rebels.
BUT if they were going to bring in Thrawn, then that would entail a commitment to the space battles portion of Star Wars, which this trilogy pretty solidly neglected.

Instead they said the New Republic was formed and then they destroyed anyway in the same movie it's introduced.

Rey being overpowered is the first big screw-up of the trilogy.
She can suddenly fly ships out of nowhere, and use advanced Force techniques, like mind control, without training. The implication is that she was born with these abilities, and that her lineage mattered. So all of a sudden, the Force is just this superpower you're born with, and not something you train in for years. People complain that Midichlorians were the first time this issue arose, but they forget that even Anakin had to train for over 2 decades, and still got bested by Obi-Wan. Rey's superhero powers make no sense within Star Wars canon, and either the Prequels and Originals are NOT canon, or the Sequels are NOT canon. My head-cannon is that the Sequels are not canon, so I don't really care if they suck overall.

Even more Than her being a Mary Sue by itself, because everything is easy to her she doesn't come off as a 3D character but rather an aimless God who doesn't "want" anything because she can do just fine in every scenario, think about it, even if the bad guys win Kylo AND palpatine want her alive, Kylo even ditches his whole First Order plus new sith fleet just because she basicly said "if u good we bang". She was doing fine on Jakku, everyone liked her on the good guy's team, 2 out of 3 of the main bad guys liked her, she didn't need Luke to train her (and in fact he didn't) she had all the skills she wanted and that makes her a character that doesn't "miss" anything, so she doesn't "want" anything. She's a passive character that the plot has to drag along, so she's just imbued with godlike powers to forcefully make her a part of the story. As all (good) superhero movies teach us: "if you're nothing without the suit, you shouldn't have it"

Yeah besides it's not an issue pf overpowered its she has no real character flaws. Anakin messed up, was too headstrong, quick to anger, made mistakes. sure lots of skills but flaws and other weaknesses outside of the force and fighting (plus he trained and lost his hand and lost to obiwan) she however does not. Hulk has power but limited control and intelligence, thor is cocky and not too bright, iron man is overconfident, alcoholic, prideful, etc. It's not power but that her power is her character shes just good at everything and the backstory to those skills and weaknesses are what sculpt what she lacks. Instead we get a desert orphan who never saw an ocean who can instantly pilot boats through 50 foot waves. You can't give flaws based on her family history at the end of the trilogy and expect it to count.

It's weird that the movie titles tell a much more interesting story than the movies do. And with a little extrapolation, I think you can come up with a better story than the one we got.
THE FORCE AWAKENS - 30 years have gone by. The New Republic is fighting against an uprising remnant of the Empire: the First Order. The First Order suddenly became a player when Ben Solo, seemingly out of nowhere, turned to the dark side and destroyed Luke Skywalker's newly founded Jedi Order. Rey, a lone scavenger that was dropped of by unknown parents on a desert planet, exhibits force sensitivity, but she knows nothing about the Force. She is drawn into the desert by visions. She finds a lightsaber (Anakin's and Luke's lightsaber that is charged with the power of both the dark and the light side of the Force; how did it end up there? The ways of the Force), and is overwhelmed by visions of Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker, and Luke Skywalker. She is desperate to find Luke and gets in contact with the Republic. Kylo Ren, equally drawn by the Force to the desert planet, shows up, and so the plot thickens. Poe Dameron, Fynn, Han Solo, they are all involved here. Luke has disappeared. He wants to find answers as to why there's a strong dark power. He's looking for the very first Jedi Temple. Once the first plan of the First Order (which does NOT involve yet another death star) is foiled, Han, Leia and Rey discover Luke at the old temple.
THE LAST JEDI: Rey and Luke find and protect other force sensitive beings. Kylo Ren is on a mission to hunt them down and kill them. It turns out that with Anakin killing the Emperor, balance to the Force has been restored and the Force has indeed awakened. After that, thousands if not millions of newborns are force sensitive. It turns out that the whole "Jedi vs Sith" thing has been wrong for thousands if not ten thousands of years. The truth is that the force needs to be united within the force sensitive beings. But the mysterious dark force that controls Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren is fighting against this. Han tries to stop Ben, but is killed by his own son. Luke and Leia are devastated. Luke has a "Jedi Council" meeting at the old temple, with Mace Windu, Qui Gon, Obi Wan, Yoda, and finally - Anakin. They tell him that the old ways have to die, and that Rey is the new generation of Force users. So Luke is indeed the Last Jedi. Luke has to confront the dark power, and end it. He travels with the gang to a mysterious planet. There's a lightsaber duel with Luke and the Knights of Ren that Luke easily wins. But then, the Dark returns. A shadow from the past. A familiar voice. "Looooong have I waited..." - "No, it can't be..." The force ghost of the Emperor emerges. The Emperor is so super powerful that no one can destroy him. Luke is disintegrated by the Emperor's lightning, Rey is in shock. The First Order begins a galaxy wide attack on the Republic, lead by Kylo Ren. All hope is lost.
THE RISE OF THE SKYWALKERS - The Emperor has returned and wreaks havoc in the galaxy with the support of Kylo Ren and the First Order. Rey assembles the Force users in a battle against Palpatine and Kylo. Together with the ghost of Anakin Skywalker, she succeeds in turning Ben back to the light side. But with a twist. Ben and Rey now both control dark and light. It turns out that Palpatine has ever since been taken over by Darth Plageius, who split off from the balanced Force ten thousands of years ago. He eventually created Anakin Skywalker and the Skywalker bloodline, from his own blood. And it's not over until his power has been completely diminished. Darth Plageius has to end. They face the Emperor. They lose. But when all hope is lost, Anakin and Luke return to help. There is a final epic battle between the ghosts of The Emperor, Anakin, Luke, as well as Ben and Rey. In that battle, Anakin and Luke sacrifice themselves to completely destroy the Emperor's ghost. The remaining energy of the Jedi and the Sith dissolves into the Force. True balance. Ben and Rey survive. They found a new generation of Force users that embody both the dark and the light: the Skywalkers.
So at the end you have the climaxes of each trilogy: The Revenge of the Sith, The Return of the Jedi, The Rise of the Skywalkers, and it's all about the "balance of the force" theme.

The old movies never really explained that or solidified what it meant. The sequels could have. That would be their purpose and reason for existing in the story. TLJ set up the idea of balance and pushed it forward a little with the idea of the force trying to balance itself with darkness rising and light to meet it. With the yin and Yang symbol on Luke's island etc. But it went nowhere with TROS.

    @errtu123 4 роки тому +11

Comparing young Anakin from ep 1 to Rey from ep 7 is largely inaccurate, because you are missing the core of the problem and misrepresenting both characters. The problem is not that Rey is powerful, the problem is that she can perform Jedi techniques without any training or previous knowledge of them (mind control, telekinesis, lightsaber fighting) and is highly skilled in everything she engages for the first time (flying the falcon expertly - she directly says she has never piloted a ship before).
You say that its not an issue simply because a character in the (later) movie marvels at her strength in the force and compare that to qui-gon being amazed by Anakin's strength. This is not an explanation. This is not how the force works. The only benefit Anakin had from his inherent strength in the force was quick reflexes and.... that's it. Those two are not comparable.
PS. I do not consider explanation "Rey downloaded Kylo's knowledge matrix style" to be valid, because: 1) it is not in the movie, 2) it is the laziest retroactive attempt at explaining her skills one could possibly imagine, 3) it is simply laughable.

  • @QazwerDave

Rey having a strong connection to the force doesn't explain how she uses the "super powers" that comes with that. Someone needs to teach her what being force sensitive makes her capable of !!
After that she needs to practice using her gifts. She needs to learn what she can do, and then steadily gain more and more control over those abilities. "you gotta keep the holdo maneuver in there"
It was a good scene as far as cinematography goes but it utterly ruined the logic of every other space battle in the series. It has to go, full stop. Let her just fly into the Supremacy with sublight engines on maximum, have the guns of the entire fleet pummel the rebel ship but the speeding hulk of the ship slams into the bridge of the Supremacy, crippling it. It's not a great solution but it's one that doesn't invalidate the entirety of the lore regarding space warfare in the series.
As for Holdo's plan in general, one of the solutions to that plot point that I'm surprised you didn't mention was the idea of a spy being aboard the rebel ship, as it pretty neatly and easily explains why Holdo isn't giving the details to Poe. Poe can still have his character arc through his hotheadedness and skepticism of Holdo leading him (and the audience) to question if there really is a spy aboard or if it's just an excuse made up by Holdo to buy time to make a decision she has no idea how to figure out.

The holdo maneuver retroactively ruins space battles that happened previously. Why not just have a bunch of droid-piloted ships holdo maneuver the Death Star in episode 4? Because when Lucas wrote it that wasn’t possible. Now it is and it retroactively creates this plot hole

A child born soldier coming to the realization that the power he was fighting under his whole life was evil, and at first attempted to run away from the conflict entirely but learns to fight for the right thing.
A villain born into a family of legendary heroes. With his ego and hatred of his family taken to new extremes, he tries everything in his power to relinquish the past and forge a darker future. But as he falls deeper into the dark side the light's temptation grows with it. And after confronting his demons, is redeemed by the very thing he hated so much.

I like keeping the Holdo Maneuver, it's easy enough to explain without breaking canon, either it requires a precise jump to hyper space between two capital ships or larger regarding interactions of mass shadows, or the hyperspace tracker extended the Supremacy into hyperspace making it vulnerable to that kind of attack. The Empire had the tech (per Rogue One), but wasn't practical due to the vulnerability. The First Order, being smaller, had to use a more dangerous tech to gain any kind of advantage they could.
Can also justify why Holdo doesn't tell him because she doesn't believe the FO has hyperspace tracking and suspects that one of the passengers may be providing their location. She realizes that those with her are trustworthy, deduces scans the ship, notices the hyperspace signature and then leads into the hyperspace ram
I would also make it more evident that Finn had hand-to-hand combat training in the First Order to help explain his ability to handle a lightsaber, maybe have him pull a baton during the opening First Order attack. That or start leaning into him being force sensitive early rather than hinting at it at the last moment.

      1. Flee at any moment by going to hyperspace
      2. use small ships to destroy the big ones?
The problem isn't just canon, it's that those kinda of "inovations" fix limitations that are there to increase narrative tension.
It's kinda the same problem with Rey. She has the "Dragon Ball Problem", which is when a character is constantly getting more powers in order to resolve the plot, so the writers don't have to think about it.

Thematically speaking, I would’ve loved the Sequels to be about the end of the Jedi. Not a violent extinction like before, just the natural end of their age and their transition from reality to myth. It would’ve made sense. If the six Lucas movies were about the Force imposing huge losses and near extinction to the Jedi in order to show them their mistakes, the Sequels would’ve been about the Force telling them “you did good, you passed the test, you can rest now.”

  • @datguy3581

I wouldn’t kill Luke at the end. It felt unnecessary. It also sucks that we lost all 3 OT characters. There is room for him in the final film. Also the milk scene was bad and should be removed.
The Holdo part is tricky. Both Poe and Holdo come off as unlikable idiots. Holdo sending Poe on the mission and him messing up seems a lot more compelling than the way they did it where it seemed like they were trying to say that Holdo was better than Finn rather than he messed up and learned from it. Also aid change Holdo’s costume. She should wear a military uniform and not have died hair. She looks super unprofessional. Or maybe cut her out entirely and have Poe be the leader and mess up. Or maybe use Admiral Ackbar.
A lot of the movie seemed to be trying to say certain characters are better than other characters which isn’t what the message should have been.

So he's kicked off the order and his knights would follow along and cause trouble for Rey and the resistance. They probably see her as a threat that will bring back the Jedi or something and the first order just doesn't care about focusing their military might on her cuz it makes sense to keep expanding and conquering the rest of the galaxy? For the trilogy to work it had have a reason to be told in the first place. Start with an established Luke Skywalker led Jedi and original characters and centre the first movie around an introduction of an antagonist and major event. Introduce the new characters gradually towards the end (TFA had it all backwards). The antagonist needed to be bigger and overarching, someone like “the son” or plageuis or the true sith army to add to the saga instead of damaging it by rehashing old ones. Make the lore bigger by telling a deep diving story, not a shallow gimmicky, lazy collection of movies.

      B) The general idea in The Last Jedi was that Rey and Ben have a special connection through the Force that is far stronger than What Luke and Darth Vader had in the originals, that they were two sides of the same coin- one was betrayed by his mentor Luke and the other was succesfully(?) mentored by him, one is the son of two of the greates heroes in the galaxy and the other is the daughter of nobodys' (I'm doing a J.J. Abrams here and ignoring the last movie). So I think an intresting way to climax their story is in kind of a reverse Harry Potter- that one would have to kil the other to defeat Palpatine. But unlike HP where the protagonist and antagonist hated each other, the majority of their stories in Rise of Skywalker would be spent on forging thei connection (Emotionally and... Forcily?). So that the climax would be that much more emotionally intensive and with real stakes. I would actually have Rey die instead of Kylo though I can't really phrase why I feel that.

Things I would change are this
    1. The New republic are the protagonists and are mostly in control of the galaxy at the start of the story.
    2. Luke already has a newly established jedi order that is a part of the republic and with him as grandmaster
    3. Ben Solo starts off as a jedi knight and Luke’s apprentice in the new jedi order, but is pulled to the dark side.
    4. The first order is a terrorist cell that emerged from the unknown regions to challenge the new republic and started wars with the outer rim colonies to start rebuilding the empire.
    5. The leader of the first order is Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a mystery that is later revealed to be Darth Plagueis who is also revealed to be Anakin’s true father and the one who orchestrated a lot of the events of the prequel and original trilogy and is creating a new sith empire.
    6. Rey is a young citizen of the outer rim colonies that saw the first order wipe out her village and her story ark is about discovering that she has force abilities and learning how to channel them and use them. She is not related to anyone special, her parents were killed in an early scene.
    7. Captain Phasma takes the role of Hux and is an intimidating member of the first order and has a similar role to Osama Bin Laden, coordinating terrorist attacks against the republic.
    8. Finn is a Storm trooper that defects from the First order and realizes that being a terrorist was bad and gets a second chance to enlist in the republic military, but deals with a lot of problems with his reputation being that he used to be a terrorist and is bullied a lot by his other fellow soldiers, so his only friends in the republic are Rey, Kylo Ren, and the Republic General, Poe Dameron.
    9. Luke, Han, and Leia are not main characters and really just serve the purpose of passing the torch to this new cast. They do not die, but instead live fulfilling lives and they do not go into these dark, depressing states like in the trilogy we got. This trilogy doesn’t get very dark at all and maintains a pretty uplifting tone.

I think the Poe/Holdo plot would work if they had a line about how they think there’s a spy in the fleet, because the FO keeps finding their location when they jump into hyperspace. Then later in the movie they could discover that the FO had invented hyperspace tracking, so there was no spy after all.
If there was suspicion of a spy in the ship, Holdo acting secretive would make complete sense. But Poe could still be hotheaded and believe that if she has a plan he should be entitled to know it, and he’d be offended that she can’t see that he’s obviously loyal and not the spy.

    >kylo then uses the force bond with Rey to convince him to run away together. rey refuses, but is tempted by the offer.
    >have the resistance (I like the new republic better) do better at this pont using dreadnought hyperspace holdo maneuvers to gain the tide over the first order.
    > the first order creates a counter to the holdo maneuver, like some hyperspace jammer (I'm pretty sure that exists in canon anyway) to lure them into a trap, crush a large portion of the resistance.
    > now with the resistance weakened, the whole team (Rey, finn, Poe, BB8, and chewie) must find kylo as he might have important info to help stop the first order
    > Rey senses the dark side calling to Kylo. They must go to prevent him from discovering ancient sith macguffin.
    > subplot: finn encounters other stormtrooper deserters and is convinced he should help the stormtroopers.
    > subplot: poe has an arch of some kind (I honestly dont know what to with poe)
    > at that planet, Rey confronts kylo. There they discover .. anything but Palatine. I'll say Darth plagueis for fan service purposes.
    > Darth plagueis escaped young palpy using the force, but he's stuck on the planet. He trained Snok. Now, he wants kylo as his apprentice/puppet
    > after being manipulated by snok his whole life and the betrayal of the first order, he refuses officially turning to the light side.
    > he then offers Rey his apprenticeship. Convincing her that she can make a legacy with the dark side of the force. (In this she wouldn't be a palpy, she would be a no one)
    > Rey agree and escapes (there can be a extra ship there or something) to the first order. With her information and dark side power. They can crush the resistance and win.
    > unable to defeat plagueis, kylo goes with the crew back to the resistance. Kylo explains the first order weaknesses.
    > the final act can be kylo trying to turn the Rey back. Poe being boss fighter pilot to break through enemy line s to stop the hyperspace jammer. Finn can try and un-indoctrinate the stormtroopers.
    >epilogue: rey back on the side of good and kylo a goodie, they kill darth plagueis and start a new force order.

I mean Kathleen Kennedy fired the original director for episode 9 which was the same director for Jurassic world. Episode 9 would be so different if he directed it as it would be fully original cause he has great ideas though Kathleen Kennedy looked at the first draft for the movie and said nope and instantly fired him not giving him a second chance which then Kathleen Kennedy though it would be a better idea to put a (*stars wars veteran*) in charge of episode 9 which was JJ abrams.

@@Turbulation1 I assumed that the main reason for the failure for Episode IX was due to studio interference, however that makes it seem like they were just shooting themselves in the foot.

Fallen Friend the last hope for episode 9 being better is if the JJ cut gets released which the cut had a lot of great stuff including force ghost anakin. Though Disney (Kathleen Kennedy) decided to cut all of that to make the film what it is right now.

Tbh in retrospective I like how everything turned out. I LOVED Rise of Skywalker cuz it fixed what was wrong with TLJ. Force Awakens was aight. Even TLJ itself isn't that bad on rewatch and with context. The ONLY problem I have rn with the Sequels is the disrespect to the legacy characters, as they undo everything that Anakin, Obi Wan, Luke, Han, and Leia fought so hard for. BUT, in its defense, THAT'S LIFE! Not everything is color pink and people die sooner or later, happiness is not forever as we'd like to believe. If you can accept that as I did then the Sequels aren't bad by any means. Agree? Disagree? Let's chat!

Looking forward to the next installment. I enjoyed The Last Jedi a lot and wish The Rise of Skywalker hadn't spent so much time trying to undo it. However, enjoying TLJ doesn't mean I think it's impossible to improve it! I certainly find your fixes intriguing. And unambiguously I think your version of The Force Awakens would've been better.

The tidying up of the First Order and "resistance" is essentially the origin of Revan in the Mandalorian Wars. Mandalorians sweep across the galaxy with those who could stop them sitting back because they're not taking things as seriously as they should. And I'm totally fine with this!

"in a military, higher ups don't need to explain their actions" 1 in a military someone like holdo wouldn't be a higher up.
    2. even if, good leaders do explain their actions, especially in a situation like this, since they need their soldiers trust. leaders need their soldiers trust, she actively provokes mutiny.
overall, your ideas aren't bad, and well informed by expanded lore knowlege, but you still have too thick rosetinted goggles on for all the crap in these abominable movies, and their perpetrators, as to strip it down far enough.

I personally think that Poe should've stopped Finn from running into the ramming laser or whatever. It shows how he doesn't want to sacrifice any more heroes like he did with the bombing run on the dreadnought. Just a little more character development for him.
