  • I’m so happy to finally do another pantry video!
    Since our last one, Frank has added more shelving and lots of bright lights 😀
    We had an amazing productive garden this year and the jars are filled with our harvests and some from local farmers that we weren’t able to grow.
    I’ll share with you how and why I like to can certain produce and some that I don’t at all.
    And I still have a few canning projects that I’d like to get on the shelves sooner than later.
    I hope you enjoy “the tour” as much as I like sharing it with you ☺️

    Hello, thank you for the tour of your pantry. May I share a tip? I store water in my empty jars, for just incase, there was a disaster & water from the tap was deemed unsafe. They are not canned, just filled & have lids & rings. When I go to use them I use the water to fill my canner. 👍🏼

    • @JustTheTwoOfUsHomestead
      @JustTheTwoOfUsHomestead  9 місяців тому +3

      Hello! I’m very grateful for the tip 😀 Do you keep it in the jars for drinking water uncanned? How long would it last on the shelf? I have tons of empty jars so I guess even if I had to use the water for other things in an emergency it would be helpful. Either way the jars might as well have something in them 😉
      Thank you so much..I really appreciate it!

    Just found you and love your pantry. There is a lot of love and hard work there. I don't know how long you have been canning but dry canning is not a safe practice. If you are ok with that for your family, you do you, but as a UA-camr you should really specify that dry canning is not an approved method of canning. I always tell people to do their own research and not to just follow a recipe on the net. There are so many new people learning how to can and don't know the difference. I know Ruth Ann does dry canning of her potatoes but she tell everyone that it's not approved and why she is ok in doing it for her family. If you have not heard of Canuary it's an amazing collaboration put on by Liesa at SuttonsDaze that I think you would enjoy. If you love canning you will love this, a new canning recipe every day with amazing prizes at the end. So go check it out😊

      Thank you! I’m very proud of my pantry 😊
      I have been canning for many years and I do know that dry canning is not a “government tested/approved” way of canning. I have not done a video on this topic yet but when I do, I will be sure to inform viewers with all the details so each can make their own informed decisions.
      I have watched a few videos of Canuary…lots of fun and inspiration! ☺️

    I have been canning over 40 years and only had about 2 or 3 jar blowouts. I have 3 jars blow in one canner load using the zinc option. I will try it again with 1/2 tablet of zinc. If I have another blow, I will not use them. My jars are way more valuable then the lovely green color.

    • @JustTheTwoOfUsHomestead
      @JustTheTwoOfUsHomestead  9 місяців тому

      That’s very unfortunate and I’ve never heard of that happening before 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve been canning your years as well and IMO I believe adding the zinc is as harmless/equal as adding salt. It really shouldn’t have that affect. If you’re not comfortable with it can them the way you’ve always done it 😀

    • @ChrisCalmtheCrazy
      @ChrisCalmtheCrazy 9 місяців тому

      @@JustTheTwoOfUsHomestead Friends were discussing the blows. Zinc is a metal and has properties such as thermal and electrical conductivity and malleability at 212 degrees F. When heated under pressure, it expands and evolves into clouds of oxide. So, I think the expansion may need a bit less volume.

    • @JustTheTwoOfUsHomestead
      @JustTheTwoOfUsHomestead  7 місяців тому

      Hi Rebecca, dry canning carrots is done the exact same way as canning the regular way with water. Fill your jars full with carrots, DO NOT ADD WATER, and process for the same times as with water. They will shrink slightly and make their own “juice”. I don’t even add salt as there is no liquid to mix it with. They are so much better than canned with water 😄
      Please note that this isn’t an approved method of canning. A lot of people do it but you should do your own research
