    Nice vid, Kyle!
Bob Bowman said on a swimswam podcast that Leon could get much better at breaststroke than he already was, and that his talent in the stroke was a bit of a late discovery. I think he’s gonna CRUSH the 200br record at NCAAs, if he even swims it because this dude could swim damn near everything and be successful.
Also, breaking an NCAA record by a WHOLE second at a dual meet is absolutely ridiculous.

marchand is a unicorn of a swimmer imo. at least in the NCAA he's won the pac-12 200 breast, gotten the record in the 2 im and 4 im, and has had some wicked fast splits in freestyle relays as well(sub 1:30 in the 4x2 and 41 low in the 4x1)
all that, to say nothing about his LCM times. he could definitely break the 4 im LCM wr and possibly be the third man ever to break 1:55 in the 2 im

Very impressive to do this at a dual meet in season.
@Kyle Sockwell @Seth Aldrich and others, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this potentially unpopular opinion.
IMO it's a shame college swimming doesn't hold at least championship meets LCM. When he inevitably breaks 3:31 or even 3:30 at NCAAs, how many people will ask "what would that convert to long course" or say "can't wait to see what he does long course this summer"? Why wait until the summer?
US college swimming clearly has world class swimmers and coaches, and the NCAA champs in particular is surely one of the fastest meets in the world alongside the Olympics and World Champs. Given this, why do we continue to hold these college championship meets in SCY? I get that SCY is exciting, but it's painful to see something like a mind boggling 3:31 SCY 400 IM and have to wonder what that swim would have been LCM, where he could break a WR and not "just" a US Open / NCAA record. Whatever ridiculous times Marchand swims in a couple weeks, the first thing I'll think is "I wish that was LCM because he might've broken a WR." I can't recall a single SCY meet Phelps peaked for, likely because if you want to be the best in the world, LCM is the pool the big international meets are swum in, and he/Bowman understood this. Obviously Bowman is coaching Marchand and (1) surely they're focused on Paris, (2) I'd trust Bowman over me, and (3) for all I know ASU trains a lot of LCM.
I've even seen UA-cam comments that will ask "what does a [insert SCY time] mean" because the rest of the world doesn't understand or care about SCY.
You could argue that USA swimming doesn't seem to have a problem producing world class LCM swimmers, so why "fix" something that isn't broken? On the other hand, we can all think of swimmers who excelled at SCY but never reached the same level in LCM (I can't think of many great LCM swimmers that weren't also great SCY). Now, maybe they were just always going to be better at SCY than LCM regardless of how they trained and what meets they swam in. However, if their peak meets were all LCM, would that have forced them to focus more on LCM and given them a better shot at performing at the international level?
At least once, NCAAs were held SCM in Olympic years. IMO this would be a step in the right direction, however SCM world champs and WRs don't really "count" as much as LCM world champs and WRs.
The first counterargument I can think of is that some colleges don't have access to a LCM pool to train. I personally never found this to be a problem (training SCY in the LCM season), but perhaps others would. Admittedly it also limits the number of facilities that can host a meet, since you need a LCM pool and a warm up pool.

The 3:30 barrier really depends on the mindset and preparation to ncaa
I’m not at this type of speed but I had a great 100 breast during a hs conference that I didn’t taper for, and I wasn’t able to beat that 100 breast time fully tapered and shaved and suited at hs state.
So in my eyes it depends on the mindset and just his attitude at ncaas. At dual meets you don’t have that sort of pressure as you do at ncaas and all swimmers react to pressure differently. We’ll see how Leon does at ncaas but if he has that good mindset 3:29 is definitely in the picture
