I think the best value for money is probably Standard Premier. You get the same seats as Business Premier, free drinks, and a light cold snack meal with a dessert and tea/coffee too. You don’t get the lounge but considering it’s usually only about £30-£40 more than standard, it’s worth it for the better seats and free food/drinks.

      @mikeymutual5489 Рік тому +14

I agree that Standard Premier is what they should have compared Standard with. It is still somewhat affordable, and is good if you need a larger/more comfortable seat. The food in that class doesn't matter that much, but I guess is still worth talking about. Business Premier is for the corporate-types who are having their tickets paid for. It is an insane waste of money for the general traveler, so who even cares about it.

I agree completely. I just took the Eurostar to and from Amsterdam and I appreciated having the table and the lovely food/drink. The lounge looked nice but not for an extra 80 or so quid.

It would have been nice to know how much Liam spent in food and drink, to check how much he really saved once everything was paid for.

Cafe Metropole’s menu says the gin and tonic plus coconut lentil daal was a bit under £15, plus < £4 for the iced coffee at The Station Pantry; let’s round up and call it £19. The difference between the two classes ranges from £130 to £160 on random trains next week. So Liam saved £110-140 (USD 140-175) in Standard on a two hour train ride.
Alternatively, Nicky spent an extra £110-140 for shorter queue, lounge access, and better seat+meal on a two hour train ride.

The airport lounge, the quick security, the comfy seat and the food did provide value for the extra money. But the standard offerings were quite OK, and as Nicky pointed out, one could save the money and have a fine dining experience in Paris.

I wish we had a high speed rail tunnel between Holyhead and Dublin, underneath the Irish Sea, as this is the oldest trading route on these islands dating back to Roman Times - aside from air travel, every time a ferry is placed on any Irish Sea routes, including from Liverpool to Dublin or Pembroke/Fishguard to Rosslare, it fills up rapidly, so there is a clear demand for this - hopefully when HS2 gets going and more lines are opened across the North of England to connect the WCML and the ECML, connecting the Irish Sea to the North Sea, this could change in the next few years, as Dublin continues to expand - I have extended family in Rural Ireland near Dublin but I’ve lived in Manchester for 21 years and I still hold an Irish passport

I travel between London and Amsterdam a few times a year, always solo and in standard. My impressions are that the waiting area at St Pancras was built almost a decade ago and isn't fit for the amount of passengers now. There are often queues at the two food places - so much easier (and cheaper) to buy something outside and bring it in with you (which is allowed). For standard seats, the Eurostar app is great: you can see what seats / carriages are free and change to those a few hours before the train departure time and nab a seat to yourself.

    • @lordtobe2774

  • @Bimmly

As a previous frequent traveler, standard premium is the way to go; it's exactly the same seat and layout as Business premium but without the fancy meal, just a basic one.
They used to run from Ebbsfleet meaning you didn't need to haul yourself into London but they've now closed that.. big shame.
The original trains were quite noisy and shakey, but the newer ones less so.
Price wise, they are twice the cost of flights, so still a way to go for value for money...

    • @Joe-lb8qn

Now add in cost to get to and from the airport. And the time. And the more generally miserable airport / airplane experience (apart from the lounge area which agree with you about but then you can get there much later than in an airport).

The food in Business Premier isn't "free", it's more like "pre-paid" (and for possibly more food than you might've actually needed). I really wish they had compared Standard to Standard Premier, because that's the comparison I'm currently trying to make.

Always enjoy these guys' videos. As many others have said, a much better comparison would have been Standard vs Standard Premier....or SP versus Business (or all three). SP seems to be the best deal if you can get it at a lower price especially the single seat option for solo travellers. The food/drink in Business is "complementary" not "free" i.e. it's included in the ticket price.

Overall top class video lads!! I do think it’s a real shame that neither of you spoke about or mention Standard Premier in this video and frankly should have done considering you were doing a classes comparison of Eurostar; to be honest Ben or someone else should have tagged along and do Standard Premier because it does differ slightly from Business Premier in terms of the meal size being quite a bit smaller and not having the lounge access. It is effectively the 1st class product aimed at leisure travellers who can afford the extra £30/£40 upgrade however sometimes it can be as cheap as £10 to upgrade. But I can see and appreciate why you lads went with this format I.e it gives the audience a more clear differential between the economy option and the upper class option.

Eurostar is both good and bad for what it offers. Its great advantage is that it operates city centre to city centre, so there's no additional travel from out-of-town airports; you're there as soon as you arrive. The departure lounge at St. Pancras can sometimes feel claustrophobic as it is not big enough. At busy times there are nowhere near enough seats. You also have to compare its cost with that of other forms of transport. While I would love to keep my carbon footprint to an absolute minimum, I know that the cost of air travel is much cheaper. For example, I travelled on Eurostar/TGV to Marseille last year. For the amount I paid, I could have taken the same journey for my partner and me three times by air. Much of the cost of travelling to France by train is the Eurostar travel. We were in Toulouse earlier this year and wished to take a train ride to Carcassonne, some 58 miles. The cost for the two of us (we are both seniors) was two euros. Imagine getting that sort of deal in the UK. Finally, well done guys for producing such a polished account of your journey.

One thing that probably should be adressed on all classes is the woeful wifi. On ICEs,TGVs and UK trains I can connect to the VPN and get work done, even when speeding through the countryside. The Eurostar is hopeless. I don't know if it's the equipment on train, or the lack of antennae along the line, but IMO it needs upgrading to match what the customer is used to on other operators. Especially if they want to encourage more business travellers.

The departure lounges at St Pancras and the Gare du Nord are simply not big enough. Living in SW Kent, we always used to travel from Ashford International but now have to travel into London to get Eurostar (adding 1h 30min to the overall journey). Last time we were there last September it was horrendous in the departure lounge, worse than Gatwick. Put us off travelling by Eurostar in future. Business Premier is definitely not worth the considerable extra cost. As others have said, Standard Premier is the best compromise.

10 years ago, I used to do London to Paris on a fortnightly, if not monthly basis and we'd always travel Business Premier, due to our preferential rates arranged through our business travel agent. However, the standard of product on offer has declined significantly in the subsequent years, not helped by Covid and the reduction in face to face meetings. Gone are the days of the hot food menu being served, supposedly by Raymond Blanc and bottomless drinks on the service in the lounge. There was a sweet spot however, in about 2017, about the time when Gare Du Nord had refurbished their business class lounge to be towards the front of the station concourse... The bartender used to make a mean mojito! Being half cut by the time you reached Frethun was the way to go! I think back then, we were charged £258 for a return trip on business premier, which meant we also accrued our carte blanche points pretty rapidly!

I think it would be worth EITHER spot to be able to pop into Paris for an unbelievable lunch experience, a night out in the city then pop back home.. Lining in the States is wonderful and free and all that, love my guns and all, but man I would really enjoy spending a year across the Pond to see life in Europe. One day maybe.

Not the most useful video to be honest. If I look for a one-way to Paris one month from now I get £109 standard, £137 standard premier and £325 business premier. As a frequent Eurostar user and having used all 3 classes, SP usually offers the best value/quality ratio. Particularly when it's also a short journey time and boarding/security is quick, the value add of the business premier perks such as the food are less valuable.

It's a couple of hours, just sit there, who cares. Also, you're going to Paris, eat when you get there rather than whatever they're pulling out of the fridge on the train and dressing up.

Why do people go to a boarding area, rail or gate and seat. Are you going not going to sit for hours when you get on board. Rail and airports need to put in a standing area with a rails to put you feet on. I don't like seating unless I gave to.

Is it possible to upgrade to a different class? I didn't see an option like that on the app. I have a Standard Premier ticket from London to Amsterdam in January. I wouldn't mind testing out that Business Premier seat!

there is no difference in seat comfort between Business Premier and Standard Premier, there is only a difference in service.

istr the only way to upgrade is to pay the difference in the ticket you have and that of the business premier - be warned though business prem to asmsterdam is around £250 each way they don't have advance fares like the other classes.

None. You can only compare Eurostar made by Alstom and Bombardier (fantastic) with Eurostar made by Siemens (rubbish). These trains used to be something golden, now they're simply riding computers and rubbish.
My last time I went to London from Brussel was in 2019, with what I noticed and found out I said goodbye then.
I used to go several times a year so I surely miss it, even though my addresses HMV and GAME are gone.
