- The EVU (Expansion Voice Unit) is basically a Wave 2.3 synthesizer without keyboard. It is developed as a predecessor of the Wave 2.3 to help the PPG system to get more voices. It is also superior to the then current Wave 2.2 in that it is 8-voice multitimbral and already has 12-bit technology. Each of the 8 voices can be adjusted separately in volume and pan position. Usually it has to be connected via the computer interface to the Waveterm and also a PPG wave synthesizer and the sounds can be controlled from there. So you have a 16 voice PPG. In my studio I don't have a Waveterm so I controlled this EVU via MIDI. This unit has the latest Firmware 8.3 so you also can control it with any MIDI Keyboard, but it lacks the sound tweaking. The EVU were very rare. The last I saw in as a auction on ebay was 7 years ago. There were maybe only around 50 units built. This unit is mint and I think to sell it, because I have no waveform unfortunately.
The 12 bit were only used for samples loaded via a PPG waveterm or a PPG PRK keyboard with built in floppy disk. For the wavetable stuff, only the 8 top bits of the 12 bit D/A converters are used. This is why the 12 bit PPG wave 2.3 and the EVU do sound more or less identical to the pure 8 bit PPG wave 2.2 for wavetable sounds. But differ very much when playing samples. If the PPG EVU only had a way to load sounds via MIDI CCs or SysEx, this would make a rack mount wave 2.3 without the need to own a whole PPG system.
I think sysex should work. I will try it. There is also an iPad app.
The built-in wavetables are 8bit. SysEx won't change a thing - unless the EVU is equipped with V8.3 and fed via Waveterm C. This combination would allow 12-bit sample transfers, both for wavetables and Transient sounds ... just a bit slow.
@@hermannseib Vielen Dank, Hermann für den wertvollen Tipp des Erfinders von Version 8.3 und besten Kenner des PPG Systems! Die 8.3 EPROMs habe ich gestern bei Alexander bestellt und dann werde ich nochmal testen. Wenn ich dich richtig verstanden habe, komme ich um ein Waveterm C nicht drum rum (gibt’s ja wohl als Software). Am liebsten würde ich ihn natürlich direkt über meinen PPG 2.3 oder 2.2 steuern, beide haben auch Version 8.3. Mir wäre einfach am liebsten eine ganz normale Stimmenerweiterung auf 16 Stimmen, so etwas wie beim Polyevolver von Dave Smith. Einen 3. isolierten PPG brauche ich ja nicht. Wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe, könnte ich die EVU dann aber mit einem iPad steuern, etwa mit TouchOSC, richtig? Herzlichen Dank!

The glassy tones of ppg wave are interesting could fm synthesis emulate them?
I don’t know. Never tried. I think it’s difficult to get the exact same results
Ich hätte noch einen Prophet 5 rev 3.0, ppg waveterm A, waveter B zum tausch... Uach einen polymoog oder emu emulator 1 lass mich wissen ob du tauschen wills.

Hallo Luka, wenn ich einen waveterm hätte, würde ich nicht verkaufen. Ich habe die EVU als stimmenerweiterung vorgesehen. Am einem Tausch bin ich nicht interessiert. Vielen Dank dennoch. Viele Grüße Rüdiger

Es wäre ein waveterm B mit USB emulation... Samples können über PC geladen werden :-) echt speziell!!!
