Sequential TRIGON-6 vs Minimoog

  • The TRIGON-6 has a similar architecture like a Minimoog Model D. There are 3 VCO with the same waveforms and a ladder filter. The T-6 is polyphonic but in this video I played it in unison and tweaked some sounds to get it sounding similar to the Moog. The filter and resonance behavior are different and the oscillators in the Mini sound better IMO. In the T-6 they are a bit harsh whereas the Mini sounds more creamy. In some passages the synths sound very similar, so you can achieve moogish style sounds on the T-6. If the T-6 can sound like a Memorymoog I have doubts. Maybe there will be somebody who can test it.

Interesting test. T6 has very good low end. At the first sound test I was surprised that the T6 was on the left 😮. I really feel that synth deserves some deep dive programming to get its true potential

They don't sound exactly the same, but close enough that I am buying a T6 tomorrow. This is the kind of video I've been waiting for. I have a Minimoog and some great polysynths, but for live gigs where I might otherwise only have electric piano and organ, this seems like it can handle poly and mono duties with equal aplomb.

Actually very impressed by the Trigon here, which I wasn't exactly expecting from the description. It's not perfect but could be easily swapped-out in a mix or on stage. For raw sound the Moog still wins overall.

Holy S**t I thought the Model D was Left! T6 is Phat!, the pulse has far more wallop on the Model D, but without fully matching sounds and levels its hard to tell. nice test though, interesting to see how the T6 stands up to the beast.

Yes, in this video the approach was to see what was tweaked live. It’s also not honest to tweak two sounds the same but you oversee the differences in the whole behavior, eg resonance.

I think the main thing holding me back on T6 GAS (for now) is having the Pro 3 SE already

great video!!! gracias! what about the Pro 3 vs MiniMoog? is the Pro 3 a good contender in moogish sounds? 3 osc, ladder filter..... maybe?

This was great Demo! The sound very similar, If I was in the market for one of these the Trigon would be my choice only because the price is so much lower. If they were the same price I would probably go with the Moog. Not because it’s better, just so I can have a Moog in the studio, as I already have a Prophet 5.

Seems like the Minimoog is much brighter. Will be interesting to see the Trigon compared to a Sub37/Matriarch/Voyager.

The moment I heard the first sound in the beginning. I right-away liked the Trigon more. It sounds more beefier (obviously it was in unison). But still sounded great to my personal liking. Can you do a comparison between this and the Voyager? It would be so great. I've been on the edge of trying to get Voyager, but this is just about less.. packed with more stuff. Got a lot to think about. 🤔

A couple of observations. You mention that the Trigon oscillators sound a bit harsh. I notice that you have the oscillator turned all the way up. If you back the oscillator down a bit, it won't drive the filter so hard and it will sound less harsh. Also, I wish you would have let the notes ring out and complete their cycle so that we could hear the filter release sweep characteristics. You keep hitting the notes and retriggering them and we never get to hear the glorious envelope and how they affect the filter. I do believe that the architecture of the Trigon is very similar to the Memorymoog and it wouldn't surprise me if the Trigon will make for a very good Memorymoog substitute. Thanks for the Demo!!

In some of your examples it seemed that the Model D was responding to velocity. Is that the case? Did you have velocity patched in?

It’s the character of the filter, if a note is pressed before the filter fully closes it will open up wider than the emphasis is set to

Internal gain staging, testing and optimization on a mono synth is usually different than a poly. The poly has to be optimized to send multiple voices to the outs without distortion. So a lot of times if you listed to one voice of a mono compared to a poly, that one voice will sound better unless you do something to compensate on the poly. For me its monosynths for bass and polys for everything else. But generally Moog envelopes don't have so much punch.. tons of presence, tons of character, but not so much punch.
