Mexico Has Its Own Southern Border Crackdown-But It Isn't Working (HBO)

  • Ever since a caravan of Central American migrants started heading north from Southern Mexico in early April, President Trump has used the occasion to accuse the Mexican government of doing nothing to prevent migrants from reaching the United States.
But that isn’t true. In the summer of 2014, when record numbers of Central American children and families were apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border, the Obama administration pressured Mexico to stop the migrant flow closer to the source: At its own southern border with Guatemala.
Mexico readily complied, deploying unprecedented numbers of immigration agents, police, and military to shut down migrant routes, primarily in the southernmost state of Chiapas. By some measures, the so-called Southern Border Program was successful: In its first two years, immigration arrests in Mexico shot up by 85 percent, according to an analysis by the Washington Office on Latin America.
But four years later, it’s clear that the Southern Border Program has created more problems than it’s solved.
The migrant crisis is far from over, and will continue as long as intense violence, poverty, and political instability push Central Americans to flee their home countries. Instead, the crackdown has pushed migrants onto more remote and dangerous routes, where they’re vulnerable to predatory criminals who rob them - or much worse.
Those migrants who are apprehended often wind up stuck for months in southern Mexico while they await for their cases to be processed. Many apply for asylum in Mexico, but even they, in many cases, want papers only so they can continue their journeys north undisturbed.

It is very apparent that Americans simply do not want these people in their country. They are a huge financial burden upon American taxpayers. "Its not what your country can do for you its what you can do for your country". They have had enough time to exploit our system. Enough is enough.

Seeing the migrant man with nothing but the clothes on his back and a machete break down in tears when the cops said they were going to let him go really makes you think about immigration. I’ve worked with Mexicans and South Americans and they work their asses off when they get here wether they are legal or not, Latino Americans also have amazing family values and one guy would bring his wife and kids with him to watch (tree trimming) and she even grilled us a really amazing lunch one time. Same thing when I went to Panama, the people were so nice and very honest.

Most Central America countries have been plagued by violent civil wars funded by the US in the past decades; El Salvador and Nicaragua being one of the bloodiest. Basically years of American imperialism in Latin America "Banana Republics" meant American corporations were owning half of the land so they would export their resources cheaper.
Democratically elected leaders of Central America were deemed "communists" for wanted to kick out the American corporations, and the US funded militant war lords and funneled weapons to overthrow and kill anyone who supported their views. Drug lords were created from the instability with hundreds of thousands American guns and the lucrative cocaine trails which were very profitable for politicians even in the US. Pretty much sums up 1960-1990 Central American pitfall reaching it's height in the 1980s under the Reagan Doctrine.

They are eager to follow the instructions of a foreigner trying to tell them how to live. As soon as you arrive they will place you on a pedestal as a savior and will do everything you say. The transformation will spread across the entire population and shine as a beacon showing what can happen if those in a miserable situation just have a little bit MORE help from an outsider with funny looking hair, skin and eyes that talks all those big foreign words and smells weird.

This reply is from the perspective of a US Citizen. I want everyone on the planet to be happy and healthy, and that starts in my own neighborhood.
I don't want to dig back through all the comments to see, but I think the original poster; "One day I will go help" was among a lot of comments expressing sympathy for the populations where many migrants are coming from and a desire to go there and make it better. I agree that their situation sucks, tragic beyond belief sometimes, but it seems to me all the efforts to help in the last 50 years have only served to make them hate us out of jealousy, travel thousands of miles on foot to sneak in and take everything they can get by lying and cheating our government programs, and by extension the taxpayers who drive on unmaintained roads, their kids are surrounded by kids who do not speak the same language, cant get in the emergency room when their kid breaks a leg, can't get a raise at work cause there is a line of people willing to do the job for 1/4 pay, even if it takes 3 of them to produce the same, and the problem is 16 times as large as when we first started helping.
You can't help a gambler who is in debt from gambling and is still gambling. You can't help a drunk who is approaching rock bottom but still drinking. The problems they are fleeing are because of the way the population goes about things, it's broke because of what they do and/or what they do not do, it is cultural. The bible speaks of locusts issuing forth, devouring everything in their path and moving on, contribute as little as possible and use, use, use till there is nothing left, sniff the wind for a greener pasture then move on. It was the Mongols who brought about the dark age.
      .
One of the most destructive failings is not abiding by the law. If a significant percentage of the population will ignore the law for a dollar, your society is in collapse and will soon be a s***hole. Those behaviors are brought about by lack of wisdom, foresight and delayed gratification. An illegal immigrant, one who crosses a border without permission, is a criminal, their first act in the US will have been to break the law. How many other laws will they ignore?
"Insurance? pfff!, sales tax? pfff! licence? pfff! If somebody offers me a buck I'm gonna take it, if I can get something for free I dont care who suffers as result, I'm gonna take it. I don't care about the consequences."
If they do not want to leave that mindset at the border and assimilate into a healthier way of being, good Citizenship, then we can not accept them or else our nation becomes the same kind of s***hole and our kids will want to flee but there will be nowhere left to escape to.
Ok when someone puts in a legal request to reject their former home nation and pleads to join ours, how do you know they are likely to become a good Citizen or if you probably better turn them around and send them back? Well you make some kind of effort to safeguard your children's future by digging to see if you can verify where they told you they came from, were they a criminal there? If there is not sufficient evidence to support who they are or where they came from, extreme caution is warranted. Then asking the would be entrant a few questions like; How do you intend to earn money to support yourself?, The common language is English, how long do you expect it to be before you can carry on a full conversation in English and no longer revert to your first language?
Do you intend to support the US first, ahead of any other country, including the one you were born in? Important enough to ask every day. In fact I think we all should continually ask ourselves that question.
Then if you are ok with their answers you let them in, and watch them like a hawk. If they are not self supporting without government assistance other than perhaps grade school level English, math and civics, within a year, then you throw them out. Or if you see them waving the flag of some other country, you throw them out. Sorry you just did not make the commitment to join our society.
Theres good ones and bad ones in every group. You dont want to help the bad ones else next generation there will be more bad ones and less good ones.
And if I misunderstood the meaning of "I will go help" I apologize.

We need to help our own country the United States has plenty of poverty and homeless that we seem to forget about. We need to take care of ourselves before we can start helping others. That being said we could help bring in more workers with visas or maybe help send over food and supplies to help them. I think the united states just staying out of the issue would be a good idea for once. We need to stop policing the world. Maybe some minor help and funding to help them learn to fish instead of just giving them fish.

why do you think Mexico is doing this? It is much easier to catch people at the Southern Mexico board than the Southern US boarder because of its size. Mexico is hoping for two things: Less Central Americans making it to the US boarder and more jobs for Mexicans in Mexico .

Mexican law enforcement knew how to handle the situation with the man from El Salvador. I applaud that because in America the man would have most likely been shot to death if the officers weren't equipped with tasers and only handguns, like the officers were in that scenario

Edgar Sandoval the point of what exactly, the big Mexico “crackdown”? He literally admitted to these officers that he is not a citizen of their country, refused their order to put down a machete and their response was, be on your way then good sir, here is some money for a taco. The U.S. is that way. Again, just amazing “law enforcement” 😂

J Olivas They weren't immigration officers. Just like most police departments in the US, they didn't overreach they authority. He isn't a threat to them and is obviously carrying the machete for self protection. Both parties went about their ways. What part of that didn't you understand?

SnarlaRae they do. The US gives billions of foreign aid to South American countries. It’s just that these people don’t want to do the hard work to fix these countries. It’s all about poor people fighting for scraps that the countries have. People need to start innovating and creating businesses. Need to stop engaging in violence and apprehend those that do. We aren’t the worlds police and it’s not our job to fix all the poor countries in the world. It’s all in the mindset of the people in the countries. There are many poor post Soviet countries that are wealthy now because the people decided they wanted a better life, but Central American countries don’t seem to want that

SirVixIsVexed the term 3rd world was created by 1st world nation's to feel superior, the US has always kept south America weak because it's national security risk, countries like Mexico can't even purchase US fighter jets, this is why Mexico buys euro copters, Russian transport helicopters , just like with imperialism with Great Brittain they left countries in shambles after using their natural resources and placing dummy governments to keep them weak and enslaved, personally responsibility yes but it's easy to say when your country hasnits own federal reserve that makes money out of thin air, only country to have that...

I've been to Mexico and Central America . I understand that people there want to work in the U.S and make dollars ,but it's so selfish of them to risk their sons and daughters life as it is their wife's well being . I would rather live however I could in my own country instead if going to struggle in another country . I think its crazy . Mexico and Guatemala is not that bad . You learn to live in the environment. Not only that ,but you have a better chance of making it in your own country. Stay home ,be happy to be alive and to have your family. People get threatened in all countries ,this is why you keep your home protected and keep guns in your home .

      Many reasons honestly
For one pretty much any major war now would probably spiral into ww3
Secondly with the amount of Mexico born citizens both legal and illegal in the us we would have a civil war at the same time
Third reason is fighting Mexico isn't just fighting their army it also involves the many cartels Mexico would pay to help them (not unlike when the us payed the mafia to protect our ships)
Honestly the only way that I can think of fixing the border issue is increasing the border patrol from around 20-30k agents up to 100-200k agents that would cost a lot and it still wouldn't be enough to stop it completely.. oh also build that Wall we need (you have to admit even if you don't like Trump the wall would keep out around 55% of illegals crossing in to the us)
Btw: some of my numbers may be off but I'm an 18 yo high school dropout so I don't really know everything 😂
