The Sioux indian Chief Firefart found the gold buried at the base of a cottonwood tree on the bank of the Knife River. Some white men had low opinions of the Sioux and would have you believe that a Sioux chief would take only a handful of gold from a bonanza discovery, then walk to the nearest watering hole and loudly proclaim the location of their hidden wealth.
