Repairing a Mr.Heater Sunflower Heater that Won't Light and doesn't work!

- Here is a quick impromptu video showing how I fixed my old Mr. Heater Sunflower propane Heater. Fairly easy fix, but took a while to figure it out. I also replaced the thermocouple, but that didn't fix it.

Excellent video on disassemmbly! Had the same problem. Here's what I discovered.
First, the real problem with the rubber tip you sanded isn't the tip. Age, chemicals, the constant pressure from the pin tip, whatever, causes the rubber to swell. This stops the propane from flowing around the rubber tip to the seat where the pin sticks through. Sand the diameter, not the end or carefully use a Dremel tool with a cut off disk to shave around the diameter of the rubber without touching the spring.
Second, both the large and the small spring go into the yellow barrel under the 3 leg sliding thing. The small stiffer spring pushes the diaphram and regulates the pressure. The larger spring makes sure the 3 legged sliding thing gets fully pushed out, pulling the diaphram and pin out,and letting the rubber tip shut off the propane when the knob is turned "off".
I just fixed my "crappy garbage" Harbor freight heater, which is basically the same design, but quite different in details, yet it was the same plastic disc which was against the valve, which I filed, and now it's working. Cool. Thought I would have to buy a new one, but thought to check you tube first. Thanks!

One side of mine would start, but when I let go of the gas valve thingy, it would not stay lit. After watching you, I lit it and held that in for a long time, and it worked. Thanks
A friend gave me a Mr. Heater for free yesterday. Hasn't been used in over 20yrs. And looks like hell but figured i'd go through it clean it up before trying. This vid will help - Thanks..... BTW me thinks me sees an old Redding turret press in the background.
Hello, Hope it helps, not my usual quality video, but gives you an idea of whats in there. Yes I do have an old Redding T25 press that I really like. I have a few others but this is one of my go to presses. I do alot of reloading and gunsmithing work for myself. I think I have 50-75 videos on my UA-cam channel about various projects/topics on guns, gunsmith work, and reloading.

Try taking the big spring out of the top, under the knob and put it in the bottom with the little spring inside of the big spring. I did that with my Mr Heater Jr and it worked like a charm.
Thanks I seem to have the same problem with my texsport heater. no propane flow. this gives me a starting point. at least I know how to take the valve apart. were I am sure the problem is.

I've noticed the new ones are built of a much less quality than the older ones. A million safety items on them too.

I have question.. I have the same heater but my connector to propaane is to small to hook to that bottle.. But my connector looks like a half inch hole
This heater is designed to be connected to a 1lb propane cylinder. Many of these were made to thread directly on top of a larger 11llb + most likely 20lb propane tank. That is most likey what you have. If it's different than that, I'm not sure what you have going on.

Think mine might have the same problem? Mine will work when I hook it up to the tank and set to medium and hold the thermo button and it will work fine but when I go to change the heat setting it just kicks off.
Possibly, I know mine wouldn't even light at first. I switched the thermocouple first with no results. There isn't much to them
Don't file too much off. I might have done that as now I only have on and off, and it won't even go to the marker on the off position, but it works fine. I'm thinking that with time, it will wear, and will be getting closer to the lower settings and even the off detent. But all is well enough for me. It works now!
Ok, so this one is out there. I noticed one time I did a light sanding on my thermode in front of the heat head. It worked for 2 days then once I released the igniter it just shut off again. I took the thermode off and cleaned the "sticky" residue off of it with fuel injection cleaner. It has been working great for 2 months now. I only have to hold the igniter for 5 seconds then release and it keeps running now. Hope this helps!
Mine had no air flow. I hook the heck out of it and it works. Probably just some dirt in the line. As for it shutting off when you release the primer button, all the newer ones have what looks like a squished black golfball sized “anti tip” sensor on them. You can find videos on how to bypass this. More than likely that is why your heater wont stay lit

I turned mine on low and I push the button and I light the lighter hold down ignitor then it it will light up but when I release it it goes out please help. It cost me $98 a year ago thank you
Could be a bad thermocoupler. I've replaced a few of those. I can't remember what was wrong with mine before i fixed it without going back and watching the video.
If you have a newer heater it has a safety(a black plastic housing with yellow wires hooked to it) disconnect the wires and use a fuse or crimp the two yellow wires together to bypass the safety. Warning you have no safety anymore use at your own risk

Hey i got one of these out of my father's shed. And it says not to start if you smell propane. Is that normal? should I try this first to see if i can get the smell to go away ?
Could give it a shot. If you smell gas before you turn it on, maybe an issue. If it's on, you might smell it of course.
Not so sure about lighting it if you smell a strong oder.
That being said, I think I will try this. Since I am not sure any of my meters will register the small charge the thermal couple puts out when heated. I took the thermal couple off and sanded it like I have done before, but heat still goes off when I release it.
Not really sure I have it positioned right this time. I put it where I thought it went at the burner. It did not work, so I moved it back a little bit.
Always use a match or open flame to check if you smell something. Darwins Evolution Theory rule number 8.

Did you ever have a Mr. Heater get RED HOT ?? The entire housing. Bright Red. Happened to me two times with two different single tank top Mr. Heaters. Two different decades. I was in view of each at time. I just turned off propane. Then tossed the Mr. Heater at the local recycling center. My guess was that the regulators had worn out. I don't know what would have happened if I was not in view of the tank top Mr. Heater. Would the Mr. Heater have melted? I guess a question for Customer Service at Mr. Heater.
I don't doubt that one bit, but I guess I have been lucky to never have had one do that. I've had them flare up before, but they usually fail to ignite more than anything with the older models. I know they have a bunch of safety stuff on them now and I don't have any experience with the newer models.
I have one that does the same thing. It starts sounding like a blow torch, then the housing turns red with the heat. It doesn't always do it, but you don't leave it unattended for that reason. I'm on my third new one, & they are a bitch to light sometimes. I get tired of taking them on & off the tank, cleaning the orifices, lubing the rubbers & such. Most of the time I can get them lit, but it's a lot of damn trouble. It's a common problem with these heaters, & you would think "mr heater" would make a better product as a result.
question for you or anyone one who can help ... i have a similar unit more than likely they all have the same type of parts to it.. well on my unit i broke of the knob that controls the levels of heat right low/med/high and well i took some heavy duty contact cement to hold it in place and i was able to control the gas with a screw that would push on a brass cap.. well idk exactly what i did but now i dont need the screw to push on the diaphragm that releases the gas but instead once i push on the actual button that releases the gas thats on the outside it pushes out so much gas lol that it actually makes me a bit nervous taking a light to it.. would their be any other way to try and control the gas by other means like a regulator or should i just toss it and buy a new one.. id like to fix it thats why i ask buying one would be just an easy fix obviously but i feel like i could learn from ppl and something like this
I would play it safe and buy a new one. Even if you could get it lit and functioning half ways, (don't think I would) you would be burning way more propane than intended and you will be spending probably more $$ on gas than it would cost to just go get a new heater.

Well, it wasnt ment to be diassembled. Youvwill need to replace that unit. Those are throw away anyways. Dont bother fixing it as I doubt you can even get parts. Get a budd heat, or Mr. Heater.
Been working good ever since I fixed it. Someone from the Mr. Heater company actually thanked me for the video as bad as it was. Must be a common problem.
Mr heater sucks for making this such a pos. Ive never had one that didn't fail immediately. One tank. On second, all he'll breaks alloose. The only way it could be any worse is if it were made out of paper.

You can't really fix this crappy garbage. All you can do is re-buy, and use the warranty and return the crap. This crap doesn't last but one season. RETURN .. RETURN... RETURN... BECAUSE THEY MAKE CRAP.
Can't speak to the new stuff, but this one has worked great for the past 18 years until I did this video. Still working good since repair.
Get to the point.
