Kerosene gives a dry heat, whereas propane gives off a lot of water vapor. Meaning, if someone uses a propane heater in a motor home or some type of enclosed space, they'll have a rain shower inside due to condensation on the walls and ceiling. Kerosene won't do that. Plus, if needs be, depending on the model, someone can cook or boil water on the unit itself. Further expanding its utility.
I myself have ran a box Kerosene heater in a van, like the one in this video, it worked out fine for me. Other than the light Kerosene odor, turning off and on. It heated 96 sq-ft at half setting for 12 hours on less than a gallon of fuel. Took temps from 18f to 60f in an hour.
Hey timerider to use it in a van. It must have been really warm in there. I’m glad you like my video. If you could subscribe to my UA-cam channel. That would mean the world to me. Thanks for watching
Excellent point on the Electrical comparison to that Propane and Kerosene usage. I have just purchased a kerosene heater for $149 for my 444-square foot (8-Ft Ceiling) insulated garage and a Blue container for $20… K1 in my area of NC costs $5.999 per gallons. Based on runtime? Kerosene was a no-brainer versus Kilowatt-Hours. I like to work in my garage and I have arthritic issues. I have thought of propane. But the thought of using it along with water vapor issues and a propane 😮 near me that a No-No! Kerosene heaters burn cleaner, Anti-Tipping safety devices built-in? I will take my chances. I can boil a pot of water on it versus a propane device. 😊 A kerosene heater than a burning candle or at best a kerosene lamp 🪔 because 😊 I grew up using them during power outage. The most important to do is NOT to light and extinguish kerosene inside which is the primary cause of the lingering smell… I am building a mobile tray with wheels to place it in order to facilitate moving it in and out of my garage…😊 Great Video except for the electrical comparison…😢

Thank you for the video. It was great! IMO Kerosene is a blessing. I run kerosene in my Aladdin blue flame heaters. They are the best I have ever used out of the several models I own and have restored. I also have a two burner Butterfly kerosene stove, and several Aladdin lamps. With just one jug of Kerosene I can light, heat and cook safely indoors. It was kind of funny because when I acquired these items my wife thought I was crazy, but then the -9F "Snowmaggedon" hit in Texas. EVERYTHING was off for days. We were quit comfortable while others suffered horribly. People were getting stinky after a few days, my wife got a hot bath after melting snow on the Butterfly, she was totally onboard after that. Yes Kerosene is expensive, but it's worth every cent to me. It's a safe, clean proven technology that you can count on and has a really long shelf life....
Propane has 92,000 BTUs per gallon, and kerosene has 120,000+ BTUs per gallon. Propane creates huge quantities of water vapor during combustion. An easy cost/price comparison is expressed in cost per million BTUs, 10.86 gallons of propane, and 8.33 gallons of kerosene provide 1 million BTUs. One BTU equals the heat from a wooden "farmers' match".
That particular kerosene heater appears to be a Radiant 8 ... it's an 8000 btu heater with a runtime of up to 37 hours on a full 1.7 gallon tank according to the manual. I just changed out the wick on mine.
I bought the red dye kerosene last week from a gas station (getting hard to find a station that carries it). It was $5.49 per gallon. It does stink if you spill some, but being careful, the odor is not an issue.
Hey Ray. The red is not to bad. I used it for years. I’m glad you like my UA-cam channel. I hope you have seen my other videos. It would be great if you could subscribe. Take care
$10 a gallon in Texas where the oil is? Kerosene is literally only $4.19 in Rural Virginia at the local gas station? You can by Kerosene from many gas stations, its the same thing. I would bet money that it's less than $2 a gallon at wholesaler and maybe $2 to $3 at a regular gas station. The Kerosene you buy in those over containers at lowes or other hardware stores is dye-free K-1 kerosene and the only difference is the color and the price, dye free K-1 is about 3 times more expensive and is really made for fancy oil lamps people use outdoors not heaters. It burns a more white light which is better for those "halloween" style oil lamps. Propane is less efficient than Kerosene in BTU as well, a gallon of kerosene has roughly 135,000 BTUs of energy, whereas a gallon of propane has roughly 91,333. But either one will work if you prefer Propane you can use it perfectly well, but if I was in Texas where they have the oil I would be using kerosene 100% since that would be the cheapest place in America to buy it.

Good comparison details. For completeness, it would have been good to include an electric heater (oil or fan) and what the cost for that would be. Other than for power outage emergencies, it only makes sense to use something instead of electric is if power isn't available in that location or the kW costs run higher that alt fuels over the same time period. All things being equal, clearly electric has the advantage since you don't need to be worried about adequate ventilation.
I think the price of a new kerosene heater is well worth it. Considering you won't have to change the wick for years, the cost per year for the hardware is minimal.
