Joni was only 23 when she wrote this. The song hits different as you age. Was so moving seeing her perform it at 80 yrs old tonight on the 2024 Grammy awards. The young singer songwriter performers got a master class in brilliant songwriting One of the greatest songs ever written Joni is an ICON
Love our Canadian treasure, Joni Mitchell. It is worth the time to listen to this song by Joni from her original recording. And then listen to a more current version by her. Both are fantastic, but the more recent version sounds very seasoned and she displays a huskier voice that convinces you she has thoroughly lived life from both sides. She is so special. Thanks for reacting to dear Joni, who still performs. In fact, in 2021, she was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors and recently appeared at the Newport Folk Festival and brought the house down. 👏👏👏🥰🇨🇦❤️
Tash Joni has always been amazing. She re recorded this song as an older woman. It is so beautiful to hear both versions……This version is that of a young woman, starting out in life, experiencing things for the first time. The second version is that of a woman who has grown and matured and has had a lifetime of experiences. Although the words are the same, you can feel the changes she has experienced. I hope you get to hear the second version as well.
Love our Joni, hearing her sing this at a 2000 tribute concert, gives it a special comparison, it has a different interpritation 30 yrs later. You mentioned Joan Baez, Bob Dylan they and others Crosby Stills & Nash, Neil Young they were all crossing paths and appearing at the same concerts. Gotta do "Big Yellow Taxi"❤🍁
I count myself so fortunate to have been alive when songs like this were first released. I was 16 in 1970 and all the great songs and singers were making their mark in those days.
She was playing with a cold, which she joked about just a moment before. You only hear it ever so slightly in her lower notes. She is the real deal, all the way around.
I seen a short documentary about her and during Woodstock she couldn't make it because she had a Dick Cavett show she had to appear on. While her other musician friends went she wrote the song Woodstock. This song became a hit for Cosby, Stills and Nash and Young.
I love Joni. She is a topnotch lyricist and singer in a folk, blues and jazz tradition. Did the coffee house scene in Toronto in the 1960s. She lives in LA now. Her album Court and Spark is good from start to finish. I love this song and Carey... and River.
Joni Mitchell inspired a lot of the Canadian music I listened to in the 90s. People like Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk and even Amanda Marshall (who also owes a lot to Janis Joplin). This was I believe the first song after the title track that was played on the Wonder Years show from the 80s. Good choice.
Thanks so much for this Tash. Joni Mitchell was a huge part of my musical journey as a teenager interested in folk music in the 1960's along with fellow Canadians Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan and many others. Of course, Joni's career has spanned decades and her style evolved to encompass not only folk, but also rock and especially jazz in the 1970's, 1980's and beyond. Her lyrics have so much depth and her voice soars effortlessly, her melodies are gorgeous, she's magnificent. For another perspective you might want to try another version of Both Sides Now that Joni recorded live in 2000. An older, more seasoned Joni sings the song from a woman's perspective who has actually lived the "both sides" of her life. It's quite a remarkable performance, far more introspective and heartfelt. Cheers from southern Ontario!
Good reaction. Very interesting to see someone's first look at Joni Mitchell. A suggestion for when you pause in mid-phrase is to just back it up a little when you resume. Many reactors do and I think it helps continuity-wise.
Love this song and many others in her vast repertoire. My dad loved her music too. Especially because she was from his province. This was one artist we listened to on our many road trips.

Queen of the Prairies - ICON.
1970 wow I do remember hearing this song growing up.. Pure raw talent there. Enjoyed watching, take care 🫶
She was in the video you watched the other day with all the Canadian singers. Standing beside Neil Young. They are still great friends
"Big Yellow Taxi" is so appropriate now!
Loved Joni since very young. 14, now 63.
Hey Tash, if you haven't already, check out Mary Pickford, the silent film star. An amazing Canadian woman and story.

Living legend. 👍👍

I REALLY loved your reaction
May I suggest Help Me to you, Tash? It’s the first song of hers I remember loving, despite being a small kid when it was released.

Have you featured Sarah Mclachlan? She is also a Canadian treasure ❤❤❤❤

The song 'Both sides Now' recorded in 2000's is even more poignant now (i.e, ua-cam.com/video/aCnf46boC3I/v-deo.html)
Funny that you mentioned Joan Baez because she, Joni and Judy Collins were best friends!
Joni has a cold, here, too.
I forgot to add Rolling Stone listed Joni Mitchell # 9 on the top ten greatest songwriters of all time.
