I love the original version but the latter version just wrecks me emotionally every time. There's so much nuance and weight in how she sings in that version that makes it hard to not be moved.
She just sang at the 2024 Grammys last month. 80 years old and it was amazing.
That was an incredible performance. After all of her health issues and learning to speak and walk again after her aneurism, it's amazing she can sing again. Brava to Brandi Carlile getting her on stage again. It was wonderful to watch and hear.

Joni had an aneurysm in 2018 and had to relearn to speak, walk, and other actions - she has learned to walk 3 times in her life. Once as an infant, 2nd after she recovered from polio, then lastly after her aneurysm. She made an incredible comeback from the aneurysm and won the Grammy for Best Folk Album this year for her performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 2022. She performed this song at Newport and it was sublime ❤🩹 her medical assistant was on stage with her, along with many other friends, and the stage was set up like Joni's living room to try and help her remember lyrics easier I suppose.
Everyone has had to learn to walk as an infant, so I don’t think that counts

Joni's first-ever performance at this year's Grammy Awards is also very emotional. It felt like both a hello and good-bye.
Love that you are showing both of these Joni performances. She is so special. David Crosby called her a genius and I agree. What a poet. What a sage.
They played her more recent, slower version in the movie Love Actually when one of the characters realized her husband had been emotionally cheating on her (Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman). It was totally heartbreaking. I agree. I think the 2nd version is more impactful and I actually prefer her older, matured voice.
It is nice that you admired the "cover art". Joni is a painter and that cover is one of her self-portraits. Her paintings are on many other releases as well.

There's one other version you should check out for emotional power. It's Joni and friends at the Newport Jazz Festival after an aneurysm that initially took her speech and movement. Musicians both superstars and unknowns would go to her house and jam. After a while, Joni started singing. Brandi Carlisle arranged a Joni Jam under the cover of her set. Joni sang this song and others witha recovering voice with the support of old and young musical friends. The whole concert wasincredibly moving.
That’s a terrible video. She sounds like total crap attempting to sing. Her voice is completely. I found it to be boring and tedious, not emotional. Instead of wasting time with that, he should react to her studio songs from back in the 70s

Joni Mitchell is an icon. "Free Man in Paris" is an amazing song by Joni Mitchell.
Great song - about David Geffen. Joni wrote about Graham Nash, James Taylor, but mostly about her life in other areas than he relationships too. They all wrote about her too; dozens of songs about Joni.

The first version wasn't the strongest one I've heard- the one they played on the radio in the early 70's was more rhythmic. The second version had me in tears. I've never seen it before and am in awe. Makes me proud to be a fellow Saskatchewanite.
Love Joni! One can tell from the first version to the second, Joni had lived and her untold stories into life and love had matured to “both sides now”. Moved me beyond comprehension and yet there she is , still loving the clouds that got in her way. Thank you for sharing! ❤
The later version would be extraordinary on its own, but the fact that there is a recording of it from 50 years earlier makes this beyond amazing. The soul, the depth, the richness that is expressed makes this the most important recording... I'm sorry, but this is such a moving performance, I don't have words to describe it

The second rendition is my favorite. It just has so much depth to it. A life lived translated through song.
Joni started out in Folk, then dropped into Pop for a bit and then drifted into Jazz. She eventually made an album collaborating with Jazz great Charles Mingus. I saw her 4 times over the years, each one a cherished memory. For another stellar performance check out "Amelia" from the Santa Barbra Bowl, 1979 video.
Joni Mitchell is amazing. The album Blue is definitely in my top 10.

On a rainy day, several of us teenagers would hang out in this mansion’s big, huge, great room, and listen to Joni Mitchell all day long while, we put together puzzles, different things like that. What a great memory! Thanks for your reaction! 💕🤟
This song gets better and better as she ages.
I have been a Joni fan for most of my life. I loved the first version of this song for many years, it was hopeful and wise beyond her years at the time that she wrote and performed it. But when the 2nd version came out it resonated so deeply. It's so world-wise, and poignant and that's where I was in my life when that version came out. It will always be my favorite of the two.
What a great idea to have both sides of Both Sides Now. And I concur entirely. The older, wiser, Joni was a far better rare wine.
"Circle Game" is a similar and perhaps even better classic from the Queen. The live version from "Miles of Aisles" has a cool intro, and is a bit of a singalong.
Love that live version too! "Miles of Aisles" concert album is the closest thing, at that point, to a greatest hits album.

A life long smoker made her voice deeper but she is still a profound singer. Her lyrics and emotions are so powerful. I just watched a documentary about Laurel Canyon and the residents of the 1960s and learned so much about her. What a life she's lived...and her painting is incredibly good. What a beautiful talent.
❤This is my favorite Joni Mitchell song and then Big Yellow Taxi. These seem like simple songs but they stand the test of time and still resonate today. She is one of the best ever song writers. I think she is number 9 on Rolling Stone's list of Top 100 Song Writers.
As others did, I would also suggest you give a listen to Joni performing Both Sides Now at the most recent Grammy Awards. It was a beautiful moment and MY ABSOLUTE HONOR to watch what may be (for all intents and purposes) her final performance.
This song is on my playlist almost daily. I like the studio version, and the picture on the cover Joni painted of herself...she's a great artist.

In this era of overnight pop stars I find myself wanting to go back to real artists like Joni Mitchell and the music of the 70s and 80s. The time of great bands and true artists…with no dancers or autotune. Those were the days.

I preferred the later version and in fact all of that album. I tend to prefer singers in their later years when life has seasoned them a little. Billie Holiday and Etta James come to mind as examples. Of course, I'm 74 so no big surprise there.
The elder version gives me the chills, its like she's looking through a smoke screen of the passage of time, at the defining moments of her life, all the emotions she experienced ....
The feelings you experienced at the defining moments of your life will haunt you everytime you recall those moments at an older age ... you may cringe, or shed a tear, or feel those shame sadness regret joys etc all over again but with a tinge of something else depending on where you emotionally are now .... looking back at things is an individual experience ... the song captures that "something extra" you feel with looking back ...
This is a haunting song, regardless of what you may feel when listening to it, the song captures the essence of aging ....
Robert Wyatt (of Soft Machine ,++) in a recent BBC interview said that yes, now she really understands this song. In folk song traditions you are not allowed to sing a song until you have a bit of living under your belt.

Judy Collins's 1967 radio version reminds me of Robert F Kennedy's assassination. I lived just miles away at the time of the event.
Pay attention to her novel rhythmic approach in this performance.
I think her later version is so much better - an older woman who has lived life and really understands meaning behind the words.
Joni uses alternate tunings on her guitar do to a weakness in her left hand due to contracting polio as a child. If you watch you’ll see she never uses bar chords

I remember when I first listened to this song in my life and my reaction was just like yours. It's a profoundly moving song. And I also prefer the 2000 performance.
You have to have enormous musical and meaning-making power to enthrall an audience with voice and acoustic guitar alone.

I prefer the second version. Slower tempo, beautiful arrangement, more mature voice. It's a totally different song than the first one. I literally cry every time I hear it. It speaks to the soul.

I had a playlist on Spotify pairing the originals of several Joni songs with her covers of them on two later albums. It is fascinating to listen to them side by side. There's a difference, and the original "young" version stands on its own, filled with a wisdom beyond her years, and then is complemented by the later version, filled with the depth of experience (not to mention the loss of her soaring soprano with age and years of smoking, causing her to explore new ways to convey the melody). She is an amazing artist. BTW, you can also find her singing this at the GRAMMY awards this year, for an even later rendition.
Judy Collins did an excellent cover of this. It’s one of the few instances where I prefer the cover/remake to the original.

A boyfriend gave me the album "Blue " in 1973 and I've been an ardent fan ever since. Her musicianship, singing and art is superb.
This second version, from later, is soooo different and I'm not entirely sure why. It is keyed differently (lower) so that changes the feel. It makes it feel more introspective.. It hits so much harder (to me)... Maybe I'm adding my own feelings into it, but it feels a little sadder, yet wiser... more mature in every way. I don't hate it, at all...
I love Joni - her earliest songs, and her middle years, and later years. All different, but all amazing. Her voice had changed so much mostly because she's been almost a chain-smoker her whole adult life.

When Joni sang this and A Case of You with Brandi Carlile and friends at the stunning Gorge amphitheater in Washington state we all collectively wept. It was like living a miracle to see this glorious woman perform. The show lasted hours. It was incredible, one of the most moving events of my life. I’ll be forever blessed to have been there
I feel the 1970s version is sung by a young naive Joni just starting out in life not knowing everything, and the other is a more mature Joni who lived life and experienced many things over the years, and the meaning is still the same, not knowing life at all...

I prefer the original to sing with, but the second makes me cry every single time. Both are a welcome additions to my life for which im so very thankful :’). Is there a more honest and elegant line than “well something’s lost, but something’s gained, in living every day”?
I really like the idea of comparing the two different points in an artist's life. In a similar vein, I highly recommend Marianne Faithfull and her song As Tears Go By. She recorded it at the beginning of her career, and again much later. The lady has been through a lot in her life, and has come out so strong.
Oh, you really must add to this by listening to her at the Grammies this year singing this at 80.

Joni is a legend upon legends. I loved all her first six or seven albums and even some of her later works. Try some of her lesser known tunes like Harry’s House or a great one called Free Man In Paris or Raised on Robbery!
