Dual Longplay of Virtua Fighter Remix (Sega Saturn vs Sega Saturn) comparison

  • Опубліковано 29 бер 2023
  • A dual longplay between the original version and the Remix version of Virtua Fighter for Sega Saturn. The original Virtua Fighter for Sega Saturn was released in 1995 and was one of the console's most successful games despite its issues. On the other hand, Virtua Fighter Remix, which was also released in the same year, is essentially an updated version of the original game. In this version, the characters received textures, and the game received slight structural and polygonal improvements.
The gameplay of the original Virtua Fighter may seem a bit clumsy and slow compared to modern fighting games, but it was the precursor to 3D fighting games and served as the basis for several other 3D games like Tekken, Dead or Alive, Soulcalibur, and many others.

So torn on this one. Theres something iconic about the flat shaded polygon look of the early Sega 3D games, and the Remix definitely misses some of that charm. However, as a competitive fighting game on the console market, Remix is more something that could go toe to toe against Tekken or Battle Arena Toshinden. It’s kind of crazy to think that even though the original Saturn VF is the better fighting game, BAT ended up being more well received mainly because of the textured graphics. I think if Remix was the game that launched with the Saturn it would’ve done all that more to edge it out against the PSX. Damn, imagine if VF Remix launched with some more extra unlockable characters and actual character endings. It would’ve been a total Tekken killer imo

I've been waiting for this comparison. The original version of this game used polygons for the floor/fighting platform; the impoved Remix version on the right used a VDP2 background layer and raster effects (the same used by 16-bit Super Famicom Mario Kart) to render the floor/fighting platform. This delivered something far better looking for a fraction of the cost computationally; and it's the perfect demonstration of the fact that *the Saturn's 2D VDP2 was always intended for and designed to augment the Saturn's 3D system* . That's why it's the VDP2 and not the VDP1 (which is he 3D GPU.) It will take a while to lay to rest the myths that "the Saturn was built from the ground-up up to be a two-dee powerhouse!" and "The Saturn's 3D VDP was only an afterthought!" but lately folks are starting to wise up to the facts -- especially considering it was Sega themselves who kickstarted the 3D revolution in arcades with their Virtua-series of games.

Exactly! It's clear VDP1 and VDP2 were designed to be used in tandem. Same with the SH2s. The SH2 CPU was designed to be used in a 2-CPU setup. The idea Sega could throw in an extra CPU thus requiring a motherboard, OS, and probably an external casing redesign and release the console earlier than intended is insane. Plus the Saturn has excellent gouraud shading and a form of perspective correction - the later the Playstation didn't have - which are not applicable to 2D shows the Saturn was developed with 3D in mind.

So he added the additional SH2 because that's how they were designed to work, as a pair.

No, I think the Saturn failed because of its advertising not capturing the attention of my generation the way Sony's did (BTW: I liked both), but MAINLY was due to it being an "arcade nerd's" machine that had games pushed to the front that only arcade nerds like me were into (Daytona, VF, Virtua Racing, Sega Rally, etc). The PS1 had exciting new styles and games that people were enticed by. Tomb Raider, though first on PC, sort of made PS1 its home. Same for Resident Evil. Plus Sony had new and exciting first party games like Twisted Metal and Syphon Filter. As a 20-something growing up in that console gen, I saw firsthand how Sony became "the cool kids console" and the Saturn was seen as the "geeks" console, with the N64 being for the kids. I worked in a game store at the time and this was just a cold hard fact. I had all 3 myself, but it is what it is. Sega hitched their cart to older gamers while Sony took a risk on getting casual gamers and new gamers into the mix. Sony won and made gaming "Cool".

Game designers were so obsessed with graphical "progress" in the 90s, they often failed to make good stylistic judgements. 2D games were shunned because they were seen as old hat. Pixel art wasn't a thing, because it was synonymous with the old 2D era. The model 1 look, with it's flat, light sourced square polygons is iconic, but because we'd already progressed onto texture mapping by the release of the Saturn people saw it as out dated and laughed at it. So we get this Remix version, which has none of the character of the original, and even ditches the lighting on the fighters, making them look like flat and lifeless. I'm pretty sure devs at the time would have to create lower polygon models to handle the textures too.
I'd much rather have seen I cleaned up, high res version of the polygonal, light sourced VF1.

While it makes total sense that they'd release Remix back then (trying to show the power of the Saturn, etc) I can't help but prefer the original low poly one more now years later. I just love the cheesiness of it :P

The more expressive shadows of the original version gives more depth to the visuals, but the polygons and textures from the remix make it look better in general.

O efeito de iluminação nos personagens foi removido inteiramente no Remix. No original, a luz mudava de posição em cada personagem pela sua posição na arena. No Remix as sombras são fixas, sendo apenas cores mais escuras na textura dos lutadores.

A piece of advice that Sega itself must have heard in 1994 when considering the launch of Saturn. A few extra months would have allowed the programmers to polish the launch games and get good reviews.

Even the floor textures look better... except for the second stage, where it actually looks worse in Remix. Sure, the concrete does have added detail, but it's less noticeable than the faded textures and extra details on the rim of the arena in the original. For some reason, that floor texture was reused for the fight against Dural instead of reusing Akira's floor texture.

Excelentes tempos! 👏🙌

Funny thing is I didn't own a Sega Saturn as a kid even though I wanted it and for some reason the left side is how I remember Virtue Fighter looking but I don't know how I have that memory because I don't remember playing the game and I only briefly had an encounter with a Sega Saturn in my youth at a house with this kid I played baseball with. BTW, the graphics on the right look like it's trying to compete against Tekken 1 for the ps1. It might even beat Tekken 1 in graphics but it definitely doesn't beat Tekken 2 and Tekken 3. I remember those two ps1 fighters having really good graphics for the time period.

as someone who's never played either and who's looking at this for the 1st time, objectively speaking the remix is better(colors and details). but although you would think why would anybody prefer the older version?, there seems to be this phenomenon, where the memories behind the older version gives people who have played it just give them an odd preference to it (yes i know its called nostalgia, it's still the darnest thing about ppl 😂)

  • @JohnCharb87

I do like the new style. Very informative. Yeah I agree about the original version. It gives the impression that your wasting your money on a under performing gaming console. I doubt a lot of people had the arcade at home experience on their mind at the time. The mentality was this should be SEGA's cutting edge new system. Also Tekken coming to North America on the Playstation in November 1995 didn't help either.
