DUI Arrest Escalates As Mother Attacks Cop To Save Drunk Teen From Arrest!

- On August 27th, 2023, an officer in New Mexico responded to a Seargenats call for backup during a traffic stop. Upon the officer's arrival, he observed the Sergeant conducting Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs) on a male driver at the front of his patrol car. While continuing the SFSTs, a blue Chevrolet pulled up, and a female exited the passenger side. The female told officers she was the male driver's mother. The driver’s mother rolled her eyes as the officer explained her son was being arrested for DWI.
The situation escalated when the male driver resisted arrest, kicking his legs into the Sergeant's patrol car. As the driver continued resiting the Sergeant, the mother intervened by jumping on the Sergeant's back. The responding officer quickly responded, taking the suspect off the sergeant and detaining her. The female suspect began to verbally and physically confront the law enforcement officers. Despite being restrained, she continued to threaten and fight both the officers.
The male suspect was charged with Aggravated DWI, Resisting, Evading, or Obstructing an Officer and Improper Equipment.
The female suspect was charged with Battery upon a Peace Officer and Resisting, Evading, or Obstructing an Officer.

My son and his friend were arrested for public intoxication while at university. He called us from jail to come bail him out at 2 am. I knew that the policy at the police department was to separate drunk students from criminals so we left him in jail overnight and made him pay bail and fines. It’s called accountability.

Even though I agree with the officers actions in this case, cops cannot just take property away from people without due process. It does need to be against the law to call for additional persons to aid in your dispute with a police officer.
I’m not even 30 yet, but even back when I was 19, if I was getting arrested for drunk driving and my mom showed up, that would make me more scared than going to jail.
If I were 19 and arrested for DUI an my mum showed up I'd be begging the cops to take me.

I was cruising at 18 with my friend that was 17 and we had a case of beer we had scored on the floorboard of my truck, which we hadn't drank yet because it was warm, but a cop that had walked up to me on foot while I was stuck in traffic to talk to me about complaints he'd gotten about my driving sees the case of beer and asks us for our ID's. He actually called our parents and he called my friends parents first and his dad was all on board about having a very serious heart to heart sit down talk with their son. Then he called my father, thinking I was a minor also, and my father says, he's 18! Do what you want with him!
The cop was taken back and shared with us what he said. He gave us an option of pouring out each can of beer right there in front of all the other cruisers going by or getting taken down to the police station to be booked on underage possession of alcohol while driving. We opted to pour out the beer, which was a little embarrassing at first, but afterwards there were plenty of other people our age that gave us a thumbs up or would mosey up to my truck when we were cruising or sitting somewhere and nicely ask if I could score them some beer! Lol
It definitely left a permanent mark in local cruising lore about me. One of many stories.

I got two great gifts from my Dad when I turned 16...
The first was his old pickup to drive. Along with a series talk about vehicle maintenance. He warned me "you run it out of oil, water, burn it up, wrap it around a tree, you'll buy your next one!"
(Years later, he laughed about that speech, and admitted I took better care of that old truck than he ever did!)
The second "gift" was just three sentences...
"You hang out with bad kids, you'll end up in jail with them. If you do, don't call me! I'm warning you now."
(I knew he meant it! I never hung out with the kids that went looking for trouble! But it wasn't until years later I realized what a gift this talk was!)
My Dad was part of the Silent Generation; he never said much, but when he spoke, he was deadly serious! Don't get me wrong, he could be very loquacious at times, and had a great sense of humor! But there never was a lot of sit down, face to face talks. In fact, this is the only one that really stands out in my memory.
I'm in my late fifties today. Dad passed away in July 2012. I miss him everyday. And I do remember both the serious times, and the fun times. He wasn't perfect! By far! And he knew it! But he taught me some valuable lessons you don't learn in school!

On a local level a judge near me was famous for being tough on DWIs for many years until he was caught ENOUGH TIMES driving drunk that they finally charged him.

I think the judges and lawyers should at least see the videos of these arrest and all the dangers these irresponsible people pose to innocent people.Judges and lawyers should ride along with officers from time to time to remember what their responsibilities are to innocent people .I am whole heartedly about second chances but not about rewarding bad behavior.
Agreed, however these court systems today are simply geared to line them up and spit them out while making as much money as possible. It cost too much money to house a person like this in jail so they cut them loose. The jails are full. Sad thing is, it's about to get a whole lot worse over the next 5-10 yrs at which point, we all need to be very wary of our surroundings and protect our homes.

Because it's better to get a conviction than nothing. With how fast the altercation was and the angle of the body-cam footage, a decent enough defense attorney could cause reasonable doubt that she actually put hands on the officer. At least with an assault charge, it wouldn't matter whether she touched him or not because her rushing over there was definitely an instance of imminent violence given her state, and her conduct afterwards.
It's almost like they enjoy having repeat offenders.

That is always my fear when they let them use their phones. What if they call friends or relatives who bring guns? What if they bring a mob who overpowers ihe cops. Not safe.

A person charged with a crime has a right to make a phone call but absolutely not at the scene. If I were a cop, I would dis-phone anybody I was dealing with on a traffic stop. You're not calling mommy or daddy, you're not texting your crew and you're not playing Pokemon.
@@jeepliving1they have a right to make a phone call after they are booked. Anything before that is a gift and usually only for those who are cooperative. Field Sobriety Tests are not phone a friend and certainly not poll the audience. At 19 he is considered an adult but obviously he has never been shown how to be one.

They didn't drop all the charges in this case.
Since it sounds like the woman is fighting her charges in court, the prosecutor may very well have downgraded the charge from battery to assault, as her actions may not have met the legal standard for battery.
