    As a guy who's built over 20 Utility trucks over the course of my life (and I'm 62 now) your video is very informative for the new guys. I remember the days when we thought 31" inch tires were big, then the new standard for larger tires went to 33"s... Now seems 35"s are sorta big but guys want the 40's!!! If you ain't on 40"s ,,,, well you know,,,
    After getting those new 35"s installed we look at our rigs and think "Man that looks awesome"! but we've just ruined performance and reliability. Now take in the fact that if you live at 6-7,000ft in elevation the performance really falls off. 35"s in Florida, on flat ground is a whole lot different than in Colorado at 10,000 ft with big passes to climb.
    Even after knowing all this myself, and having a lifetime of real world experience in building some nice trucks, I had plans of installing 35"s on my new Gladiator Mojave. Your video and a couple other UA-camrs (The Boys from Down Under) have changed my mind. I'm sticking with the "TINY" 33"s but will still be installing a 2.5" suspension lift just to get a tad bit of body/frame clearance for my build. I just don't want to drop another $2-3 grand on regearing. That could be money spent on fuel to actually go to cool places in our trucks.
    I think we all get caught up in that cool factor when it comes to our trucks.

      Thank you for watching. I lived in Colorado Springs for 3 years, and I will say that those mountain passes can be brutal to climb. I actually made this video because of all the bad information I was seeing on Facebook, people telling everybody that they run 35s or 37s on stock gears and don’t have any issues.       @@NotICON As a new Gladiator owner I'm finding the power delivery of the Pentastar V6 with the 8 speed auto is actually very adequate. So, I'm not going to mess it up by throwing on 35"s even though it'd definitely look way better.

    Great video! Planning on ordering a 24 Rubicon with 35s, 3.6L, will put on roof top tent and maybe tow a couple of times a year. Should I go with the 4.56 or get 4.88 option from factory?

      Manual or automatic? The new 8 speed automatic is a real game changer when it comes to the need for a regear. If you have 4.10 gearing and an auto, 37s aren’t an issue. If it’s a manual then 4.56 will get you back to a stock feel.

    Love your Off Road Trip videos... Having the Occasional Tech Video is a Bonus also... One other thing to remember when stepping up in Tire Size that is really going to effect Your Performance is going to be the added Weight of Your new Tire/Wheel Combo... I went from 32 to 35 to 37’s, and with that Combo Your adding almost 50lbs per Wheel of rotating mass (I promised myself “No” 40’s 🤔).... At 35’s instantly noticed how much harder it was to Stop the Jeep (The JK, JL has better Brakes)... I added the Mopar Big Brake Kit with Booster, and it made a World of difference in My Stopping Power... So even with regearing, remember the added Weight of Your new Set Up, and the additional effort Your Jeep is going to need to turn those new Tires... Keep the Videos coming! 👍😃PS... Added the Comment as a maybe new Subject matter for one of Your new Video’s

      Haha I think 40s May be in you future 🤣. Your absolutely right. There a so many things that you have to consider once you start going bigger. Stopping is one of those areas that a lot of people do t think about, but it’s another really important aspect to consider. Being able to turn your wheels while off road is another one.     Good video, I have a 69 cj5 I just put dana 44 axles in, they are out of a 77 wagoneer...I am goingvyi be running 33" tires, the jeep has the warn overdrive , 3 speed manual Trans and a chevy 283 engine...what would be a good gear ratio for this,? I plan on going on the Rubicon since I live real close...

    I was running 3 15 70 17 and I dropped down to A2857017 do I have to regear to go smaller tire size... Will that do any damage to my Jeep... If I keep it the same gear ratio

    My jeep runs fine on the road with 3.73 and 37” tires but this is the eco Diesel engine but once I go up a big hill on the temperature rises a lot

      If you have the 8 speed automatic then that helps out a lot. You will notice a massive difference if/when you regear.

    I’m really stumped. Just based on the charts it looks like 4.56s will be a good middle ground between gas mileage and RPMs on 37s. I plan on running 35s and 37s later on. I only want to regear once. 4.88s seem like too much for 35s. But I don’t think I’m quite ready for 37s. I don’t really care if the Jeep isn’t as peppy as it can be, I drive pretty far to go off-road so I don’t want to be filling up frequently. For reference I’m in a 2 door. Not sure if 2 doors can get away with a 4.56 for lightweight 37s comfortably.

      I’m currently running 4.88 on 35s. On the highway the RPMs are a little higher, but I’m still getting 16-17 MPG. I’ve programmed the computer for the tire size as well. I plan on running 37s when I get new tires. I would honestly gear for the end tire size that you want. 4.56 would be acceptable, but 4.88 drivability would be preferred.

      @@NotICON that makes sense. So I’m assuming 4.56s would lead to worse gas mileage for 37s but better for 35s? And 4.88s will return better mpg for 37s and slightly less for 35s?

      @@AustinH7 it’s more about how hard your engine has to work. 4.88s are a lower gear so your engine doesn’t have to work as hard. Like the analogy with the bike, you exert more energy to pedal with the higher gears than you do with the lower gears, even tho you pedal faster. Which one will make you tired faster? Higher RPM doesn’t necessarily mean worse MPG. Your engine has to work harder so it’s pumping more gas into the cylinder. So you might get the same ish MPG with 4.88 on both 35s and 37s

    Hey great Video!!! I am running 37s with a tuner it’s not bad running 3.73 but there is drag. I want to be able to drive 80 on the highway like I do now . I bought 488s has not been install yet. What’s your opinion ?? 488s or 5.13. Thanks so much.

      Its absolutely true though. I see so many people ask the question of "should I regear if I go to XX" tire?" They get all kinds of bad advice from people that haven't regeared. They don't know any different so they tell people that its ok. Mechanically speaking it really isn't, and you end up doing more harm in the long run.

      @@coloradomallcrawlers I just feel like if my video can inform at least one person and point them in the direction of doing a regear than that is a successful video. Everybody that I have talked to that have regeared say things like, "its a whole new Jeep" "Its a night and day difference" and "I should have done it sooner." Haha well she is a good driver.

      The issue that you run into with a ratio that low is that the teeth get smaller and weaker. Do you have an automatic or manual? Also do you have a Rubicon? If you have a Rubicon then the lowest ratio I would do is 5.13. If you don’t have a Rubicon the lowest ratio I would run on a D30 is 4.88.

    Did 33s planning on cutting the fenders Used an AEV Procal to fix the shift points and Speedo. I would go bigger but it’s my only vehicle so I really gotta keep it driveable

      33s are more than capable on most trails out there. If you plan on running anything larger then it will get expensive really fast, especially if you want to be capable off road. I cut my fenders, door trim really cleans up the look of the edge.

    What are your thoughts about the Wrangler 392 that comes with 33’s. My 392 will be delivered next week and I would like to swap the 33’s with 35’s. I’m a first time jeep owner that is looking some good advice. Thanks for the video!

      I don't know much about the 392, or how its set up. However, I would like to think that with the power of the Hemi that it would make up for a lot. I know that the JLUR with the 8 speed auto can run 37s, but there is a slight noticeable power loss. At least that is what my buddy has told me.

      Thank you for watching. So I actually have a Sport S and regeared to 4.88s. I, personally, wouldn't run anything over a 35 on the D30, but there are a lot of people that do. They truss it and reinforce the C-Gussets as well as swap out to stronger axle shafts. But that is a lot of money, and at that point it may just be worth it to upgrade to an aftermarket D44 for the front. Just take it easy on the skinny pedal though and you should be fine.

    Good video. I have 34s on the 2008 jk standard trans. Regular wrangler. Seems fine.. wondering your thoughts. Different brand tires are higher and weigh different as well.

      The weight of the tires won't really change anything. Its the rolling circumference that makes the real difference. The overall weight of the Jeep will make the biggest difference when it comes to weight.

    Will the Willys 32s be to much on a 3.73 gear? Will I notice coming from a JLR 33s with 4.10 gears?

      You will be fine with 32s and 3.73 gears. You will likely notice a little lower RPM range on the highway.

    Nice video with some great information. I'm definitely split in between daily driving and overlanding. I currently have a 2020 Manual Transmission JL that came with 4.10's the plan is to upgrade to 35's. With that said, I was thinking about 4.88's but now that I've watched your video 4.56 might be the way to go.

      I'm in a manual as well and I'm running 4.88s on 35s. Off road rock crawling it is awesome, on road at highway speeds its not as great. The RPMs at 70 mph are higher than I would like, so I stick to arouns 65 mph.

      Do you know what your current gear ratio is? I know the TJ offered a 3.07 gear ratio. 33s on that ratio is really gonna be slow and you will have a noticeable loss of power. 3.73 should be fine

    My Jeep has the 3.21 gears(auto). I have 35x12.5r22 my current mpg is 14-14.5. It still gets up and goes pretty quick, but I was looking into the 4.88 for better mpg and just all round better performance lol. It also has trouble shifting into 5th at around 60+mph. However I’ve seen some people you have the 4.88 and their Jeep still does has that problem. Should I still re gear?

      It depends on what motor you have. If you have the 3.8L then 4.88 will be a good choice. If you have the 3.6L then 4.56 would be your better choice for an all around driving experience. Going from 3.21 gears will make a wold of difference.

      Thank you for watching. Your tire measures about 32.7" in diameter, at least that is what the calculator says. tiresize.com/calculator/ You will be fine running this tire without regearing. That calculator allows you to compare two tire sizes and will tell you what the difference in speed is. It says that with the slightly larger tire, when your speedo says you are doing 70mph you will actually be doing 71.3mph if you don't correct your speedo.

      You shouldn’t notice any change in performance. Just correct the speedometer and you will be good.

    I just got a 2003 tj . It is a 2.5 litter on 33s. Thing is so slow on the fwy. Any recommendations on what gear size I should get on the rear ? Please help 🙏

      4.88 is what is commonly recommended for that combo. You will need to regear both axles at the same time, if don't you will run into major issues.

    I’m Running Fuel 18 on 33 inch tires all stock no lift on a 2017 JK sport dania44 what’s your thoughts on re gearing ? I did notice a bit loss in power due to the weight increase in wheels and tires.

      Is that the biggest tire that you plan on running? I ask because a regear is pretty expensive, and not something you will likely want to pay for several times. If 33 is the biggest that you are gonna run than I would suggest 4.10 gears. If you plan on going bigger than I would gear for the final size tire. 4.56 would be good for 35s

      It’s funny how I see the dealers selling these Jeeps with 35+ size tires and running lifts meanwhile I’ve seen some not even bothering to re gear.
      I’m also wondering how some Jeeps excluding the Rubi have pretty big tires and no re gear from factory gets me thinking how they do this.

    I have a 2015 Rubicon with 4.10 gears. I’m going to lift it 2.5 inches and put an airlift for the back for my travel trailer that is 2,800 dry weight. I go up to 3,400lbs only a couple of times.
    Should I re-gear to a 4.88? I’m going to keep my stock 31 tires until I wear them out (around 20,000 miles left) and then go up to a 33 or 34 tire at most.

      I think 4.88 would be way over geared for a 33” tire. If all you plan on running is a 33 then stock 4.10 will be fine. If you go to a 35” tire then 4.56 would be the best choice for combined on and off road, and still have towing capability.

      I really depends on the area, but on average you are looking at around $1,600 for parts and labor. Its not cheap but it is a complete game changer when it comes to on and off road performance. You won't regret it.

    With the new 8 speed transmission couldn’t you just get a taser to change the shifting points on the JL if going to 35s?

      The new 8 speeds help out a lot. It really depends on what gear set you have from the factory. 4.10 and you are absolutely fine, 3.73 and you might notice a slight impact to performance, 3.21s you will most likely notice a good impact on performance.

      You will notice a slight drop in power, but its not going to be anywhere near as drastic as 3.73 or 3.21. If you go to 37s then you will absolutely want to re-grear.

      4.88 is the safe bet to give you close to factory performance. Keep in mind that you will need to have the ECU reprogrammed to match the new gear set.

      For a TJ with a 4.0 a good gear ratio for 33s will be 4.10. This will give you the best all around daily experience as well as decent off road use.

      @@antoniorobledo2516 I would suggest doing a 4.56 gear ratio if you plan on running 35s. That will give you the best all around driving experience. 4.10 on 35s will potentially give you a little better MPG, but you will be sacrificing power and off road capability.

    There is just so much more to it. Larger tires are a larger load and wear on the vehicle, that’s it period. There is no magic way of getting that back you will use more fuel and be slower out of every stop light no matter what axle gears you have.
    You can get it closer back to factory performance by getting the axle gear ratio correct but it will never be the same or last as long as a stock vehicle.
    Also be very aware that overgearing will make your vehicle perform worse on road! I see this all the time in the jeep groups guys are screaming their engine rpm down the highway for no reason. People think bigger is better- that is absolutely not correct.
    But I am in the camp with the new 8 speed automatics you are throwing money away regearing. Your bicycle analogy is great. Put a bigger tire on and yes it’s harder to pedal in your last gear. But downshift and it’s exactly the same as before. And these new 8 speeds do it for you. Don’t get focused on 8th gear the engine rpm is what’s important

    Is 5.13 good for a 35 and a 4.88?
    For daily driving

      If you have a YJ with a 4Cyl then maybe. Other than that I wouldn’t recommend it.

      I’m currently running 4.88s on 35s it’s not bad for daily driving, however the RPMs are getting up towards the 3k range when you’re doing 70 mph

    There’s absolutely no reason to re-gear a JT for 35’s if you already have 4.10’s

    Diesel ? 3.0

      The concept still applies to the 3.0 diesel. While the 8 speed automatic has a better gear reduction than the previous 5 speed automatics. You will still notice an impact to performance, it just won't be as pronounced as before.
