The maps are run through Bing maps, which is Microsoft's map program, so they definitely work best for US locations. That being said, I wouldn't anticipate that you have any problems with Papua New Guinea either. Try highlighting the list of locations, going to the Data tab at the top, and using the Convert to Type button. There's an option there to categorize your list as Geography. It's a little map icon. Let me know if you don't see it.
In the US, Excel can handle states, counties, and zip codes. I've also done worldwide country maps, Canadian provinces, Ukrainian oblasts, and Guatemalan departments. Give it a try and let me know what other units you can find!
Outstanding and only in 4 minutes, thank you! One question/challenge I ran into -- doing this for countries outside the US, and breaking down district (or province) didn't seem to work - only the full map of the country is filled in, despite listing country and district in separate columns as the Excel guidance suggests. (My example country was Malawi)
Hmm, let me give it a try and see what I find out! It *should* work. I've made maps recently for Canadian provinces, Ukrainian oblasts, and Guatemalan departments with zero issues. Stay tuned!
Very, very cool.
This ONLY works if you have Office 365 (sadly).
It DOES work for Canada as well (partner has 365).
Might be time to get the latest version of Excel. :) And yes, it works for non-US locations too.
Thanks Ann !! i have been using excel for quite some time but didnt know bout this feature !!
You're welcome! They're new-ish so a lot of people don't know they exist yet. Excel came out in 1985 but the icons are only from 2018.
Very helpful but I cannot locate the "convert to geography" button when I was using provinces in Papua New Guinea

What are the different geographic units excel will recognize (i.e., county, city, zip code)?

I like this! I can see a lot of uses. Got me thinking.

Thank you! I’m sure it’s a small tweak I’m missing, it only had me wondering if Excel had geographic coding down to that level for all countries.
As usal, Ann K is a rocks. Love this clips mam!
